There were no words for how much she struggled with this subject. It wasn't that it wasn't enjoyable - to be honest, she didn't mind the whole wand parts, swishing and flicking and transforming one thing into another. That wasn't bad in the absolute slightest, and she didn't find it super difficult - the actual doing it if almost anything wasn't as difficult as the figuring it out. Not that she needed to figure it out. No, magic was fine without all the theories and the paperwork and the 'why do these words do this' or 'what are the rules behind this' or even 'what are the laws of magic'. She didn't plan on going into a career that needed magical theory - why did she need to learn it? Blegh. She was just going to- to play Quidditch, or be an Auror, or be a singer, or all three! Not create spells, or figure them out, or reduce them down to basic elements, or anything like that...
It didn't change the fact that Lien Hua had to write a paper, though, and she stared at it, hunched over the table in the Common Room, ink slowly dripping from her quill to the parchment in front of her. That was literally the only thing she had written down. Human transfiguration was hard. No, she didn't know what the most difficult parts of the body to transfigure were, and the book was awfully confusing about that. What did you do with transfiguring humans into inanimate objects? She felt like it was illegal, and that was part of what she had to write down, but... she wasn't certain. And no, she didn't know the morality of the whole bit, or if they thought like humans when fully transfigured, or- or anything.
With an explosive sigh, the girl leaned back in her chair, straightening up and stretching, before reading for a rag to wipe up her parchment with. Yeah, there was no way she was going to be able to figure this one out on her own - which she had kind of anticipated, to be honest. Otherwise, she would've hunkered down in the library, it was easier to concentrate there.
Thus, time to look for someone to help!
Brightening up at the aspect of not doing this alone, the Hufflepuff glanced around, trying to search for someone who was above her, or in her class, and was awfully smart... Ooh, ooh, @emrys could definitely work! The other 'puff was super smart, and Lien Hua always made an effort to include her in things, anyway - she was super solemn. It looked like Lien Hua had more things out... so time to get Emrys to get over here!
"Emrys!" she called out across the Common Room, uncaring for the volume of her voice - it wasn't like everyone wasn't used to it, with the exception of the first years, one of whom accidentally knocked over a chess piece. "Can you come here? I need your help!" There. Perfect.

One might actually call Emrys smart because she got decent grades in classes. That was a flattering image to think of a life-loving little Hufflepuff doing all she could do in school to make her parents proud. Well, let's steer the wheel back a little and make some corrections. First of all, Emrys had only one surviving parent with her, and the only one whom she ever knew. Her mother. Second, while she did do her best to do well in school for her mother's sake, that was pretty much her only motivation. Besides practicing incantations from classes like Defense Against the Dark Arts, Transfiguration, and Charms that actually have to do with incantations and spells, she thought that most of the work that she was required to do at school was worthless and an utter waste of time. She simply wanted to be an auror, and for goodness sake, writing parchment after parchment of essays wasn't going to help her!
She had already completed her tedious homework in the library. Academics wasn't her best thing, so she did her best to accomplish tings in a setting where she could really focus. She was no Ravenclaw. She really had to push herself if she wanted to get things done so that she would have free time to do other things that she liked.
And, there she was, in the Hufflepuff Common Room. Emrys was sitting on a couch reading a book about combat spells used for dueling. No, Emrys was not a bookworm. She was not a reader and she never picked up a novel to pass her time. The thing was, if the subject had to do with dueling, Emrys was just about ready to pick it up and observe it. She took dueling seriously, especially because she wanted to be an auror.
But her reading was disturbed when she heard her name being hollered from a cross the room. She sharply lifted her head up and gazed in the direction where the voice had come from. She already recognized the voice as Lien's, but of course her eyes confirmed that it truly was the hyper girl. Apparently Lien was asking her for help. Emrys frowned, but not because Lien asked her for help. The Hufflepuff was always ready to help a good guy out whenever she could. She just wished that Lien could've used more order and decorum instead of booming her voice for all to hear and startle people. It was too chaotic an action for Emrys' taste.
She left the book laying where it was on the couch, got up, and made her way across the room toward the girl. "Couldn't you have asked me without yelling? It was unnecessary and alarming," she chided, even if she knew that would be lost upon Lien. She sat down at the chair beside Lien and sighed. "So what do you need help with?"

Emrys had definitely heard her, and Lien Hua beamed, unrestrained, not really caring at all about the displeased look on the other's face - well, okay, she cared, but she knew it wasn't anything serious, so she wasn't concerned - waiting impatiently for the girl to make her way over. It was just smart, y'know, to have her move, instead of moving all of her stuff over! Especially because Lien Hua was at a table - once claimed, you didn't want to give them up, especially when you had a lot of homework to do. It just... was not the smart decision.
And she wanted to make the smart decision! Which was why Emrys was here.
Emrys's annoyance was... well, utterly predictable, and the biracial girl gave a shrug of her shoulders. "It's easier! I didn't have to get up, and you heard me!" She was completely unabashed, and it wasn't like she got any discouragement at home - her parents were both rather quiet, so *she* was the loud one. It evened out pretty well, though being with so many students, it wasn't quite as necessary as when she was trying to finangle a quiet home... Ah well! Two more years until she graduated, too late to change now! And it would freak everyone out.
Homework time, though, and that meant she had to concentrate, as terrible-sounding as that seemed. The smile slipped from her face as she let out a put-upon sigh, as if the world was resting on her shoulders, frowning slightly down at the paper, before over at her friend. "Transfiguration's being the horridly difficult shenanigan it usually is," she declared with a huff and a bit of a puff, her struggle with the subject a well-known one. It just... didn't agree with her. She didn't think it was useless, didn't think it was awful, but all the writing and the just not clicking and the argh. No. It didn't go well at aaaall.
"We're doing human transfiguration right now, and we have to understand all the rules and the laws and the safety stuff, first, but I don't really get it! It's weird and I just don't see why we can't go for the magic part, and if we screw up, sucks to be us." Yeah. That sounded like her ideal kind of class.
It was a good thing she had no ambition to be a teacher.

So Transfiguration was what Lien was stuck on. Emrys was fairly decent in it when it came to the incantations, the direct magical aspect of it. But things like theory, text, concepts, principles, logic, and rules were harder for her to grasp. She didn't memorize them as easily as Ravenclaws did. Emrys usually needed to have a textbook at hand if she wanted to complete assignments concerning those. Therefore, she was not the best. But with the information right in front of her, she could weather through it well, as much as she disliked it.
She heaved a sigh. "I wish it were so as well," she said in agreement to Lien Hua's complaint about why they had to go through those trifles. "But alas, they are also important for us to learn. We do want to execute the spell with as much caution as can be afforded." Emrys hated the thought of damaging a person by messing up on transfigurating the bloke--that is, if she was going to randomly transfigurate a person. Although, she wouldn't mind injuring a dark wizard in the process.
Emrys had recently completed this assignment, so she had a gist of what to do. However, she couldn't completely remember what she had written down on her own parchment, and she needed the textbook to fetch the answers again. "I can help you with this, but I will need the textbook for assistance," she said. "Do you have yours with you? If you don't, I can go get mine." Emrys wasn't sure that she saw a book on the table. She also didn't see why Lien couldn't go get her own textbook, but Emrys wasn't stingy on her part. If someone (good and nice) needed a favor from her, she was quite happy to do it. Therefore, to make things easier, she didn't mind being the one to get up and go get her own stuff if Lien didn't have her's around.
