The first two years after Rai graduated Hogwarts, she worked hard on her Occlumens. She decided that was a better place to start then with Legilimens, since it was more important to protect her mind right away then to get into others. She trained with a private teacher, another black market trader who had taken her in as an apprentice of sorts. She had been practicing for about eight months when she was finally able to pull it off. Her trainer was reaching into her mind, trying to access the brightest corner of her memory, a place they hadn't tried to get to yet. "Rai, do you want me to see what's there?" they asked harshly. "No. No," Rai answered, her eyes shut tightly because she was focusing so hard. But her trainer was starting to get through. They started to reach the light, and the sound of a voice started to become clear. "No!" Rai called out, lifting a hand out to them and, suddenly, opening her eyes. She closed them again, this time more softly, and just took a deep breath in through her nose. She felt like she was building a wall around the memory, a wall made of millions of tiny lego pieces all stacked and stitched together. They built up one at a time, but with incredible speed. She would not let them see.

Rai was twenty three years old and she had finally managed to work out Occlumency. Now, she decided to try Legilemens. She had recently been offered a spot in the Order of the Phoenix, and she knew that having this skill in the Black Market would make her an even more valuable ally for them. She could get information even better than before. Having knowing Occlumency for three years now, learning Legilemens wasn't a hard step. She trained with members of the Order who knew it, who agreed it would be a good skill for her to have. It was hard to convince her brain to think the other way, when she had spent so much time focusing on keeping others thoughts out. Occlumency had a way of bleeding into Legilemens, though, if you weren't careful. So she sort of had a taste for what it felt like. She imagined a string, a string that spun through the air and sewed it's way into the persons brain she wanted to pick. Her first time it really worked with intention, she was training with one of the Order members. She imagined this string connected them, and imagined herself tightrope walking across it, until she was in the other persons head. She imagined catacombs of files and boxes, all sorts of treasures to be revealed. She opened one of the boxes, and found herself in this persons memory. They were a small child, cowering in a corner as their parents fought loudly in the other room. She pulled out, frowning at them, and offered a hand in comfort. It was hard to be sad about the memory though when she was thrilled she had achieved Legilemency for the first time.
