overall personality:
wesley has always been your stereotypical “good boy”. born a prince of the luxembourger ducal family, he always knew that he had a duty to his family and his people, and he always tries to put his duty first. as a result, though, wesley finds it difficult to put anything above the concept of duty. he values his status as a prince above his personal relationships – not in the sense that he feels superior, but in the sense that he knows that, if the choice came, he’d find it difficult to choose his friends over his duty. since he doesn’t like having to tell people that they’re playing second fiddle, wesley tends not to have a lot of close friends. he’s polite to everyone he meets, but doesn’t let many relationships get past that stage – except his familial relationships, since they also understand that they might one day after to put their devotion to their country above their devotion to wesley.
now that he’s outside of luxembourg and therefore free from the majority of his duties, wesley has realized that he doesn’t really know who he is beyond the dutiful prince. he never had any urge to rebel against the roles that were set for him, but now that he doesn’t have anyone looking at him, or expecting him to behave a certain way… he doesn’t really know what to do. he feels like he’s been abandoned, like he’s lost on an ocean without an oar. this sense of purposelessness isn’t good for wes, physically or emotionally, so he’s desperately trying to find a new sense of purpose. that likely won’t be his school work – though he’s dutiful, wes doesn’t take much joy in his schoolwork. he only does it because he knows it’s necessary, so his marks aren’t the best, reflecting a general listlessness and lack of enjoyment, if not lack of effort.

history:
wesley’s birth was long-awaited – his father was the fourth child of the grand duke of luxembourg, which meant that he lived in the spotlight, and his children were expected to do the same. from a young age, wesley didn’t have to lift a finger. his parents and his aunts and uncles doted on him, and he had maids and servants who indulged his every whim. this lasted for the first few years of his life – but when wesley was five, and he showed his first signs of accidental magic, everything changed. his family had always known that they were magic. to muggles, the grand duke was purely a figurehead in the government, but to wizards, he was the equivalent of the british minister of magic, leading the magical community and using his position as a figurehead of muggle government to keep the wizarding world safe from the prying of muggles. in any case, wesley was taken out of the public eye when he began to show signs of magic, just as all of his elder cousins had. the official excuse for his abrupt exit from the public eye was private tutoring… but the tutoring wasn’t exactly the sort that the muggles probably thought.
in addition to being taught about customs, politics, and all of the other arenas that were typical for princes to know, wesley received education on how to better control his magic, so that when he was out and about he wouldn’t accidentally reveal the existence of magic on public television, or something equally disastrous. even at such a young age, wesley wasn’t exactly comfortable with keeping the secret about magic. from the way his parents were talking, it sounded like it would be the literal end of the world if he lost control. wesley obviously did not want the world to end, so he focused on gaining control of his magic as quickly as possible. it was difficult for him, because it seemed like magic was just another thing separating him from being a normal kid.
wesley’s official tutoring in magic – with a wand and spells and all – was put off until he was eleven years old. wesley had assumed that when he turned eleven, he would be attending beauxbatons in nearby france. if he had been thinking he would have realized that his older cousins were still in luxembourg, and he wouldn’t be attending beauxbatons. the lost opportunity to get to meet witches and wizards that weren’t related to him was disappointing, but as with everything, wesley learned how to cope, relying instead on the companionship of his older cousins. they told him the “official” reason for them not going to beauxbatons was to keep political power from falling into the wrong hands – something about having the heirs to the throne of luxembourg in another country being dangerous, even if they were in that country for schooling. wesley soon figured out that the official reason wasn’t the real reason, though. in actuality, his grandfather was growing more and more paranoid about his own ability to hold power, and wanted his grandchildren close in case the worst should happen.
for a long time, the paranoia seemed like just that – paranoia. it got to the point where wesley and his cousins were under some sort of unofficial house arrest, not allowed to venture outside the castle unless it was for an official event. when wesley’s wand was accidentally broken in a dueling accident, he wasn’t allowed to purchase another one – rather, he was told to look in the nassau vault, which held the wands of all of wes’s ancestors. it was interesting in some respects to be able to see the wands of his distant relatives, but in some ways, wesley was just disturbed by his grandfather’s paranoia, a view which was shared by most of his cousins. wesley didn’t dare ask his parents their opinion on the matter, lest word of it get back to his grandfather and he be punished for his naysaying. it also seemed contrary to everything that he had learned – going against his grandfather was going against his country and his duty, and thus against everything wes held dear. he decided to keep his head down and hope for the storm to pass.
but the storm didn’t pass. suddenly, the paranoia wasn’t paranoia anymore. wesley’s grandfather was ridiculed for his inaction, first in britain when they were suffering through strings of attacks at the wizarding school there, and then in france, when a terrorist cell took credit for the explosion of transportation for the explosion of dozens of teenagers. france neighbored luxembourg, and the fear that the terrorist cell would spread into their country reached a fever pitch. the upper echelons of the ministry began organizing a coup, and, fearing for his grandchildren’s lives should the coup succeed and he be removed from power, the grand duke sent them all away to england. word had just come that ilvermorny had been ransacked, and the grand duke hoped that wesley and his cousins could blend in with the slew of new students.
now in a foreign country, unaware of the fate of his grandfather or his aunts and uncles, wesley is unsure of what to do with his life. he’s afraid, but not for the same reasons as everyone else, and after a life lived in relative isolation, he doesn’t know much about making friends. he wants to cling tighter to his family, since it seems like that’s all he has left, but wesley is also worried that clinging tighter, instead of branching out, will just be another thing on his long list of regrets.
