It was a warm night, far warmer than most of the nights had been recently - he couldn't sleep after tossing and turning and kicking off his blankets. So he gave up and slipped out of bed, taking the few small footsteps to his sisters bed and peeking over only to have eyes that matched his own meet him. The twins couldn't sleep - what followed he was sure had been her idea but Wyatt went along with it, and both small children - not even six years old yet - snuck out of their bedroom and down the hall towards the front door. They weren't allowed outside at night - Mama always said so - especially not on their own, but technically they wouldn't be alone exactly. They had each other - so was it really breaking a rule? Neither child cared at the moment as they looked at each other mirroring grins on their tiny faces as they dated outdoors and into the warm night. It was cooler outside - not by much but the sweat dried and the children ran around, bare feet in the cool grass as they laughed and chased each other.
Their mother still asleep inside, the twins were free to do as they pleased outside. It was a grand game and both of them were giddy and excited - it was technically that they were doing something they weren't supposed to do, like sneaking cookies before dinner - only this was far bigger as it was well past their bedtime and they were outside and playing.
Rules were there for reasons. It was something they still hadn't fully learnt, they were still young and innocent and rules seemed like silly little things that just kept them from doing fun things, things that big kids got to do and things adults did that they weren't yet allowed to do. It was innocent fun for them, spending time together outside when they had meant to be inside fast asleep. But as they ran around and played - eyes watched them from nearby, it was Wyatt who heard the noise - a low growling sound that made him freeze and look around. It was a terrifying sound for a child so young. But the sight that followed the noise tore a scream from both children.
A large wolf-like creature darted from the trees, towering over the small children. On pure instinct Wyatt leapt in-front of his sister, yelling at the creature, "Don't hurt my sister!", both of them stumbling back as fast as their small legs could take them. He refused to move from in front of his twin, trying to keep her safe even as he himself was more than terrified. But the creature was quick and so much bigger than them both, it leaped towards them - sending the children to the ground. But its focus was on Wyatt.
He felt the pain, a sharp - burning pain that tore a sharp scream from him - he felt its sharp teeth tearing into his shoulder and faintly he could hear his sister yelling and screaming behind him - barely heard above the growling sounds that were so close to his face. His vision faded and he felt the ground suddenly beneath him as he dropped - there was a yelp and the wolf-creature ran off. A mans face hovered in-front of him - a wand in his hand and he felt his sisters hand in his own - before the world around Wyatt faded to black.
What happened next was a huge blur that he likely wouldn't ever fully remember. What had started as innocent fun - led to Wyatt being bitten by the wolf-creature, a werewolf - the word would later be known to him, understanding what it meant was something that he'd learn far quicker though. He awoke in a hospital with people hovering over him - but it was their eyes that scared him more. A mixture of sadness and.. fear. Fear of him - a little boy with a bite mark scar on his shoulder. He asked for his mother - for his sister. But neither of them came. His mother was dead - and his sister was missing.. gone. Wyatt was alone and people were afraid of him, he was tossed into care - no parents wanted a creature - the word made him sad to hear - like him.
But as much as he cried and yelled - wanting his sister, and his mother - his life was changing all around him. It was the next full moon night though that he understood why people were afraid of him, Wyatt felt pain and fear worse than the night that lingered in his nightmares - nightmares of a warm night that started happy but ended in pain and fear - and so much blood and screaming. Wyatt now turned into a creature like the one that had bitten him.
