When Adeline was just nine-years-old, her mother sat her down and had “the talk”. Of course, it wasn’t like any of the talks that the muggle community gave their children about the birds and the bees. Instead, this one was about her genetics. It was at this age that Adeline learned that she was one-eighth veela, and explained what that meant for her. All witches and wizards that fancied the female gender would desire her, and that her charm would affect those around her. At the time, she didn’t realize just how much her experience would affect those around her, being that she thought that it wouldn’t do much but make people think she was pretty. By the time she got to Hogwarts a few years later, she’d learn just how wrong she was.
Males and females constantly called her beautiful, inhumanly so, and it made her so uncomfortable. Her first boyfriend, a guy that she doesn’t even remember the name of, would constantly call her beautiful, and even be lustful towards her. She hated it so much that it only took a few months for her to break-up with him, after being caught between a rock and a hard place—and by that, she meant that he kissed horribly. After that, she went back to her mother and got an even more depth talk, one that talked more about her gift and the way people would react to it.
She realized then that she had to be more careful, that she had to protect herself more. So, each term, whenever she went back to Hogwarts, she was more careful with dating people, maybe that was how her commitment issues started. When people got to close, or seemed like they weren’t acting on their free-will, she broke their heart. She didn’t like doing it, didn’t like seeing people as anything more than people that wanted to take advantage of her.
By the time, she graduated from Hogwarts and entered the community of witches and wizards; she feared commitment so bad that she refused to date anyone. That was before she fell in love. Falling in love felt different, and she believed that he had loved her deeply until she learned that it was nothing but a trick. She was an object to him, and because of this, she broke up with him. Maybe he didn’t see her like that, but that was how she felt, she could see it in his eyes—or maybe that was her seeing what she wanted to see. Adeline hated her genetics, hated that this was a part of her—not because she didn’t like being pretty, but because it made her scared to get hurt.
