Adeline was walking among many different people on that particular day that found themselves in Diagon Alley. She wasn’t shopping, but instead, she was looking for something in particular. What that was, she didn’t know, but she decided it might be at Diagon Alley or even Horizon Alley. So, as she wandered through a swarm of kids and their parents, sipping her skinny latte as she did so, she wondered what it would be like to fall in love and have children one day. Would that be in her future? Would that be something that came along? She once had her tarot cards read, and even her palm, but a gypsy while on vacation, and she was told that it would come to her eventually. Did she believe in that type of thing? Not really, she believed in real magic, but all she knew was that person was a hoax. But what she did next, wandering along Horizon Alley, and standing before a building that she couldn’t remember always being there. She found herself reading the words of it over and over again, Blishwick Matchmaking Services. She—in utter and stupid curiosity—found herself walking into the building and looking around. The closest trashcan she found, she quickly dropped the empty cup in and quickly moved forward. “Hello?” she called out, her French accent thick in the silent air. Maybe she should just leave, get out while she still could…if she couldn’t find her match because of her fear, there was no way that a matchmaking service could do it either. She had heard of them though, from an owl that came in her mail, but she had been dating at the time. Her ex-boyfriend had been dashing, and handsome, and she felt that she loved him…but she feared it all. She quickly broke up with him not long after the sign-up was through, so she couldn’t throw herself into the blind dating roulette, not that she wanted to anyways.

@adeline Part of running the shop and taking care of the upkeep meant having to commit to errands occasionally. A normal day like today meant Jimbo would assign the task to Adonia or his daughter, whichever looked more bored (and that was assuming Jameson was there in the first place). Today was Adonia’s day off though, and Jimbo felt nice enough to bequeath the role of running the shop to his daughter. He knew that could go either way – she would do her job like she was supposed to, or pretend like she didn’t really care about it whenever a customer entered. Having them fill out paperwork was exactly difficult, and if someone really wanted to talk to him, all they had to do was wait patiently. Getting the judgmental stare down from Jameson probably wasn’t the most pleasant experience in the world though, so Jimbo was hurrying along today. First order of business was picking up a new stack of blind date pamphlets, swiftly followed by the old round getting mailed out to everyone on his list serve. The distance between the printing shop and the post office was far though, and he was too stubborn to simply apparate between locations, preferring to enjoy the nice weather today.
Upon completing his errands, Jimbo made his way back towards Horizon Alley and his store, which he expected to be quiet still at this time of day. Diagon, from the looks of it, was packed with the early morning rush, which meant eventually all of those folks would be bleeding over into Horizon soon enough. While he trusted Jameson to manage the shop for individual customers, even she couldn’t handle a crowd. That was asking too much of her. Busting through the front door of his store elegantly, Jimbo was surprised to see a young woman standing there and a lack of Jameson behind the counter. Kids these days. He couldn’t wait to hear the story behind her absence. “How can I assist you, miss?” Jimbo spoke up, crossing his hands behind his back as he walked up to her. “First time visiting, I take it?”

Adeline thought about leaving within a few seconds of entering the establishment. It was empty, but she felt like someone was most likely lingering in the back. What was she doing? Why did she come in here? So many questions were telling her that she shouldn’t have come, that she should just turn and leave. And within a few seconds, just as she turned towards the door, the sound of a male voice came from behind her. She closed her eyes, letting out a soft defeated sigh, before turning around towards the male that asked her if he could assist her and plastered on a smile as she drew closer, just a bit. He questioned if this was her first time visiting, and she laughed, “That obvious?” she questioned, her thick French accent coming out. For all the time, she had lived in England, you would think that her native tongue would disappear, but she was the lucky one. She took a deep breath, shaking her head, “I’m not sure…I’ve walked past this shop so many times I just grew curious. I don’t even know if I believe in the magic of match making,” she said with a small laugh, “No offense, of course, I just mean in regards of me. If I can’t find someone on my own, what’s the chance of you or anyone else finding someone for me…” she quickly shook her head. “Sorry,” she muttered, wanting to apologize for both her rant and pretty much running the business throw the mud in her mind.

@adeline Jimbo laughed as the woman asked him if it was obvious she had never been there before. Well, yes it was. While not everyone had the ‘deer in the headlights’ look the first time they entered, the subtle glances around the shop were enough to give it away. It was human nature to take interest in one’s surroundings – Jimbo did it every time he walked out of the front door and stepped into the street. There was no telling who he could be strolling along next to, even if the surroundings were the same brick buildings and paved sidewalks that he was on every day. So the entrance of a new client was indeed obvious to him, aside from the fact that he remembered all of his clients faces. It was kind of hard to forget when they were burned into his memory. “I see it almost every day,” Jimbo bragged. “You get used to it after a while.” She was French, that much was obvious, but his eyes couldn’t be deceiving him that there was more than that to her. Studying people was his passion after all, and there were certain inexplicable aspects some in the magical world had that did not go unnoticed by him, or rather, he was sucked into them despite fighting back.
She started to explain how she had come to enter the store, starting off with a line he had heard hundreds of times: she didn’t believe in the magic of matchmaking and didn’t think even he could find a perfect fit for her. This was going to be a fun one. All these poor, young souls said the same thing the first time they entered the shop. By the time they left, the believers were en route to finding their true love, and the ones that scoffed at him would be back once they failed on their own. That was how it worked, after all. “No need to apologize,” Jimbo waved his hand in front of him as he stepped closer to her. “As for your chances with my aid, I’d wager they’re somewhere in the range of one-hundred percent.” This part was one of Jimbo’s favorites as well. He had a lot of personal favorites, but the confusion and surprise of a customer coming to terms with the fact that he didn’t fail at his job was easily the best. Jimbo crossed his arms in front of his chest, a grin preparing itself for when the girl finally responded to him. This was going to be good.

This place, it gave her both the warm and fuzzies while also making her want to run away with her tail between her legs. She felt cornered, suffocated even. This place had always caught her curiosity, but then again, a lot of things did. And since she could never stick around with a man for longer than a few months, it seemed about time to see if someone could fix that. Maybe he was good enough to find herself someone that wasn’t charmed by her or even someone that she could slowly begin to trust. Oh, who was she kidding, the one person she could trust she had broken. She was a broken record when it came to love; she’d probably end up some old and alone dog lady that still lived in her apartment. When he answered her question, telling her that he saw it almost every day and that he was used to it, she nodded her head and kind of pursed her lips a bit, rocking back and forth on her heels for a moment. “You are that confident then?” she questioned with a raised eyebrow, was it confidence or was it a prideful ego that was showing? She wasn’t sure and wasn’t about to question him now, “Confident enough when working with a part veela that’s scared of commitment?” she questioned, almost challenging him to say yes. If she couldn’t fix her broken ass, he couldn’t either. She wanted to see him try, to prove to her that he was as good as he believed. Or maybe she wanted to see him turn down the challenge, maybe wipe the look off his face.

@adeline Jimbo laughed loudly. Confident? Oh she was a funny one, he could tell already. There were times where it amazed him that the Blishwick name wasn’t taken seriously. Generations of success had been built up here, and while the business had begun with betrothals for purebloods only, that didn’t meant they were still exclusive. He had assumed that the bombardment of advertisements in all of the wizarding newspapers and magazines would get people to notice him, but not for every new client that stepped through the door to question his ability. Jimbo was used to the confused and questioning look since it almost always happened, but lately it seemed like it was on a whole new level compared to before. “Miss, I wouldn’t have a business if I wasn’t confident. Hacks don’t get to dress like this,” Jimbo motioned with his arms, trying to draw attention to his ridiculously expensive suit. Those that wanted to be like him could dress as spiffy as they liked, but not every day of the week, nor with repeated success.
But of course the woman had to throw a curveball into all of it. A part-veela. So he was right, there was something more to her than just trying to take her surroundings in. Being hyper-sensitive to veela and vampire charms, Jimbo had found that working with them was more than just difficult. The key here though, was that she was only part veela, so that would be less of a headache. “What percentage are you?” Jimbo asked. That was more important than her supposed commitment issues she was talking about now. “Definitely not full because that would have given me a migraine the second you stepped through the door. And I’d wager less than half, since they tend to be powerful still…” This wasn’t necessarily a conversation he needed to have out loud, but it was better to be up front with a customer before they got into the thick of things. “Essentially veela and vampire blood can make my process more complicated. Something about your genetic make-up tries to reject my skill. No need to worry though because I have managed full-blown veela and vampires before, it just takes a little longer than normal.” And it would more than likely put him in bed for a weak from exhaustion. Last time he had run into an allurement charm, he was still an apprentice and thankfully had his father to run the shop in his stead. This girl hadn’t killed him yet though, so it looked like it wasn’t going to be that more difficult than normal.

She could tell her words weren’t hurting him, nor bruising him just a little. She was pretty sure he probably heard it all by now, but at least, he didn’t have any negative reviews. Meaning that he probably was good at his job, and while Adeline probably didn’t believe in this kind of stuff, other people did and enjoyed his business. She had heard about his little blind dating trick, and from what she heard, a ton of people joined in on it and found their soulmates, while others found friendship. Adeline probably would find neither, but that was just how stubborn she was. Or maybe she feared that it was just her charm being the thing that drew people to her. It happened to her best friend, Eleanor, but that didn’t mean nothing became of that draw. “Yeah, that is true. Though I’ve seen hacks dress a bit better than that, think their pockets are bigger than they are,” she said with a small smirk. Though he was right, people that bluffed and pretending to know what they were doing, they didn’t end up owning a business and flashing pearly white teeth in an expensive suit like that one. “I’m an eighth,” she said as she watched him, to say she wasn’t a little satisfied that she threw a bit of a stumper in there was a bit of an understatement. She nodded her head when he tried to explain just what full and half did to him. He began to explain just how complicated veela and vampires were towards his skill, but he promised her percentage wouldn’t be a problem, just a bit longer and more complicated. She wanted to laugh, at least, she wasn’t a full-blown veela, that would probably be a nightmare. She nodded her head, “Well great, because with my stubborn ass…it wasn’t already going to be a bit longer,” she said in a semi-joking tone. “But anyways—to add to the already burning fire—I have a bit of a complication of my own. I don’t stay in relationships longer than a few months, maybe a few flings here and there. My longest relationship lasted until we both said the three-word phrase, and then I broke up with him…because of my—yeah know, ‘charm’—I have a fear of commitment,” she breathed out. She didn’t know why she was telling him this, Adeline didn’t even know if she wanted his service, but she was a bumbling ranting mess right now.

@adeline Jimbo chuckled at the woman’s comment about hacks and their pockets. That was certainly true. “I’d bet six generations of successful business that I can help you out then,” Jimbo responded smoothly, straightening his tie even though it was already flush with his suit jacket. There was absolutely no reason for him to ever fail a reading and match, unless this woman was here to actually throw him a curveball and try to cheat the system. Not saying that veela were cheaters and tricksters, but the constant struggle Jimbo had when dealing with them always made him wonder if he was giving as accurate of a read as he could. That obviously opened the door for criticism if he messed up – which was one of the reasons why those with inherited allurement charms had to sign extra paperwork when it came to striking a deal. He couldn’t risk the company name if one of their relationships failed, because there was never a way for him to tell if they were getting a little extra help from their blood. At the same time, blaming them for failed relationships due to that skill wasn’t right either. Walking a tightrope across the Grand Canyon was what it felt like sometimes.
The woman responded to his question that she was only an eighth veela, and Jimbo felt some relief to hear that. That was basically nothing in his books. When that far down the bloodline, while technically some magic was left, he could treat this as if he was working with a regular witch or wizard. “Why the rush?” Jimbo asked as he crossed the room and towards his sitting area, picking out his favorite chair immediately, motioning for her to take a seat as well. This felt like it could turn into a lengthy discussion if he asked the correct questions. “And are you actually afraid the charm is going to cause problems, or are you just using it as an excuse to get out of relationships once they start to get serious?” Apparently there was no beating around the bush with him today. The girl would have to come to terms with this reality eventually though. To him, it sounded like she was blaming her powers, something that wasn’t necessarily always controllable with veela. But at an eighth, it couldn’t be so strong as to worry about that constantly. Then again, he had his own wacky special powers, so who was he to talk?

She was quite impressed, six generations of this family that brought about the age of magical matchmaking. Maybe he did have the right tools and skill to help her, or at least, attempt to help her. She watched as Jimbo made her way across the room and into a sitting area, asking why it was a rush. Once he sat down and motioned for Adeline to sit across from him, she had herself shrugging her shoulders, and slowly sat down. She felt fidgety, her body nothing more than to remove herself from this setting, but she refused to back down. She had stumbled in here for a reason, and maybe that reason would help her in the long run. And then the questions started, he began to ask the deep questions, one that ripped at her heart and messed with her mind. “Maybe both?” she questioned truthfully, and then she frowned, “When I first learned about veela’s from my mother, about their charm…whenever people got close to me, especially in relationship type settings, I had doubt in my mind. Was it just my veela side making them say that or did they mean that? There were a few times I believe the latter happened, that I didn’t feel anything in that relationship and used it as an excuse. I think after a while…I started to believe my lie, and now I’m scared of being the one that gets hurt,” she said, baring her heart through her words.

@adeline Jimbo didn’t need any sort of special power charm to get potential clients interested in what he had to say. Years of experience in learning how to read what a person needed and wanted, and then adjusting accordingly, paid off on days like today. A, what he could only assume was frustrated, young woman with an eighth of veela blood in her veins, thinking that it was all her fault for running out of every relationship she had been in. Technically she wasn’t wrong by placing the blame on herself, but luckily Jimbo found that it was easier to fix oneself than to fix someone else. Saying she was wrong with how she was going about her life was also a misnomer; her knowledge on her veela charm seemed to be misconstrued and blown out more than it probably actually was. Getting to the root of that problem was his job though.
As she sat down across from and started to explain her dilemma in further detail, Jimbo crossed his legs and leaned back in his seat to take in the story in its entirety. She had legitimate concerns about her bloodline and the effect it might have on her possible suitors, which made sense to him. The root of the problem was how she detailed her current position, afraid of confronting the lie that she may have created for herself. That was much, much more problematic than he had initially thought. Those were the sort of negative thoughts that could create lasting wounds. Jimbo let a few moments of silence pass after she finished before beginning once again, making sure that he had all of his talking points ready to go. “So I believe I see where you currently stand on the matter,” he explained. “And I agree. I think it’s a little bit of both, though one is definitely more to blame than the other.” Jimbo was almost positive that very influence was coming from her veela charm, at least from how she was explaining it. That didn’t mean she was aware of the fact that she was using it as an excuse excessively.
“In my experience, and correct me if I’m wrong, a veela charm has a sort of hazy, infatuated compulsion that it puts over those attracted to you. The ones that are in a constant daze like trance are the ones that you shouldn’t bother much with. It’s unfortunate they get in that situation to begin with, but it’s neither of your faults for it. It just happens,” Jimbo shrugged. He was one to talk, since the power of a full or half-veela would totally send him into a fit in a matter of seconds. That was also because of his indirect compatibility with them via his own power. “The next step is to discern which ones aren’t taken by the charm and are truly interested in you, and then all you have to do is find the one that is the most compatible from there.” Breaking potential suitors down into sub-groups like this was extremely odd, but he was sure that it would help in the long run. Even if he hadn’t given her too much new information, it was assisting in his overall plan of how she should progress forward in life. “And there’s nothing wrong if things don’t work out and people get hurt. Feelings can almost always be repaired, and I like to view heartbreaks as a way to grow and learn from. That’s part of life, and while unfortunate, it happens to everyone.” Jimbo paused for a bit so that she could take all of that in. He hated delivering that statement since his whole business model was that he could help people succeed in their relationships. But that was only if he was hired. Right now he was talking about the old-fashioned ways of love and romance. They were finicky, but so was life in general. “So any specific memories come to mind where some guy was definitely under the spell or out of it? That might be a good start to identifying a false from a positive.”

‘So I believe I see where you currently stand on the matter. And I agree. I think it’s a little bit of both, though one is more to blame than the other.’Adelaide had already discovered this; it was a bit of both that had resulted in so many relationships coming to an end. In the beginning, it wasn’t so bad, but over the years there were a few things that resulted in her being the way she was today. There were a few friends that she made that weren’t friends for a long while, some boyfriends that only used her for her looks. But at least she was glad to know there was someone else that agreed with her, and maybe just maybe, this guy was legit and would be able to help her. Perhaps she’d be able to get over Ryan once and for all. She internally frowned, but the question was, did she want to get over him? She listened to him as he went on about the veela charm and just what it was, ending with the fault was no one’s when they fell prey to it. He moved on to talking about how they would figure out who was taken by the charm and who wasn’t, which was a rather odd way of categorizing the male species, but if that were how it would have to happen, then it would. “My last real boyfriend, I—I don’t think he was under a spell, he was the first one that didn’t pressure me, he was charming and made sure I was the one that was happy. I broke up with him after we said that we loved each other…” she said, thinking about the day she broke his heart, “I hurt him that day, he reacted differently to the breakup then the others did.”

@adeline As he finished explaining everything, Jimbo did his best to study her reactions to his potential thoughts on the whole situation. There were a lot of things to take into account here, one of the reasons why working with veela was simultaneously frustrating and an excellent mental exercise all at the same time. It wasn’t often that Jimbo found himself really working hard on a case like he normally did with them, and it was even rarer for a veela to find difficulty in this department. Alas, they were all humans in the end, and this girl was unfortunate enough to fall into the throes of love just like any normal young person out there. The only difference was that she had the tiniest bit of magical blood that could throw doubt into all of it, and that was where Jimbo wanted to place most of the blame this time. She went on to explain her last relationship, and how it had ultimately ended. From the sound of it, the charm that boy was captivated by was all her own and had nothing to do with her ancestry. Now came the fun part in trying to navigate explaining that it wasn’t the veela’s fault that time for sure. Jimbo didn’t need to fully vet out both of them to understand what their true feelings about the relationship were. That much was obvious without having to say much. “Were you afraid of what would come after saying that?” Jimbo asked, eyebrows furrowing slightly as he tried to get a grasp on what she may have been thinking in the moment. It was another step into figuring out where she should go moving forward, and how to learn from past mistakes and experiences.

His words echoed through her mind, was that the case? Had she been scared of what would come after the ‘I love yous’ or was it something else? She stayed silent for a few moments, really thinking about it. Her heart was thumping loudly in her chest, almost as if it were going to come out. Was it fear? Regret? Guilt? She didn’t know, but as she thought about Ryan and envisioned his broken face, she swallowed deeply. Frowning softly, she looked down at her hands that were tidily placed on her lap; legs crossed over one another and heels tapping against the side of the chair. She was growing antsy; she wanted anything to just run out of the place. Quickly she took a silent breath, said an internal pray, and spoke her mind. “I’m all for commitment and things like that. I guess I was scared of what would come next. Sex…marriage…kids…they’ve just always seemed foreign to me. I never really thought about it all before…before Ryan…and it—it scares me.” she breathed out truthfully as her gaze moved down once more. She couldn’t look at Jimbo in the face, scared to see his reaction and his expression.

@adeline The fact that the L-word seemed to be what caused her to end her last relationship didn’t phase Jimbo. That pesky little word was like signing an invisible contract with rules and restrictions, most of which the signees had no clue about. Especially those new to it all, which from the sound of it, this girl was. Love was easy to take advantage of, mistaken, and thrown around with little to no effort. He had seen it used in almost every way imaginable and to describe virtually anything the human mind could come up with. The fluidity of it was superfluous for some and scripture to others. Jimbo was the preacher, using what he had been given in order to guide those that wanted to listen in the direction of what he assumed could bring them love, or at the least, something replicating it. Humans were still tricky enough to get past him sometimes, but veela blood or not, this woman wasn’t as difficult as he thought she would be. Her case was much simpler than the average veela, or even young adult, for that matter.
She said she was down for commitment, but the follow up to that sounded like anything but that. Jimbo narrowed his eyes as he listened, ticking off the boxes as she went through each of her concerns. Now the ball was in his court. “You say you’re ready for commitment, but I don’t think you are. At least, not to the degree of marriage or children,” Jimbo voiced his thoughts. “I think you’re getting very far ahead of yourself as well. Sure, it takes two to commit to anything in a relationship or else it wouldn’t be one, and that is why communication is key. Did you ever voice those concerns to Ryan? For all you know, he could have had the same thoughts and fears you just expressed to me,” he explained, stopping for a moment to let her think it over. Jimbo didn’t want to chastise her for leaving – that was the last thing she would need right now. He continued, “But I also think your apprehension and gut instinct did the smart thing here. You weren’t ready for what came next, so you left. There’s nothing wrong with that. It also doesn’t mean you and this Ryan guy can’t give it another shot down the road. Sometimes self-reflection and time corrects those concerns. Your case is something every single one of us goes through at some point in time. Perfectly normal. I’ve certainly seen stranger things happen when it comes to love.” He didn’t need to get into that today though. That was a story for another place and time, the finer details being too much for someone simply wanting a consultation and a prod in the right direction.
