EVENING HAD BEGUN TO DESCEND AROUND Ilvermorny. A shroud of thick, fall fog marring the grounds. A great pink and red sky peaking through the cloud cover every now and again. It was the perfect kind of night. Especially for what Eli had planned. He'd thought about it for longer than he usually would. Passed Ashley in the halls, surrounded by her friends. Seen her while he was with his own. It had never been opportune to stop her. And some times, it was like she didn't see him.
That night was different, though. He knew where she'd be. Though, when he spotted her through the pillared walkway, she was among her friends again. Those people who taunted him. Bianca and co. He hid behind a pillar so as not to draw their attention, feeling a little creepy as he waited. Soon enough, he heard her say her goodbyes, head ducked and peeking through a curtain of his own hair. He waited until Bianca had turned her back before he leaned out from behind his pillar and yanked on Ashley's robes. He tugged her in to his shroud of partial secret, a large grin on his face.
"Hey, Stranger," He said in greeting. "Told you I'd see you again." As promised, he thought. Though, this was not just a social visit and he told her so. "C'mon, I wanna show you something." He declared, popping his head in the direction of the expanse of green grass that led its way to a copse of thick pine trees. "D'you trust me?" He asked, letting go of his handful of her robes to walk backwards on to the damp grass rapidly, toward the trees. "Trust me!" He told her, lifting his brows and grinning excitedly. He turned and jogged away, hoping against hope that she would follow.

The next few weeks passed somewhat quickly for Ashley. She'd started to notice Eli more and he seemed to be everywhere. It was strange how often she saw him. Sometimes their eyes met, but sometimes she couldn't look at him, even though she knew he was there. She didn't want her friends to notice her looking at him, so she had to be careful. He had lots of friends, too. It seemed like he was rarely alone, which was a shame. How were they going to see one another again? Well they were already doing that, but she wanted to spend time with him again, though she couldn't admit it to anyone. Today was almost over and she'd spent quite a bit of it with her friends, doing things on the grounds. Still, it was starting to get late and it was getting dark outside so they were heading back. She decided to walk on her own and stepped away from her friends, making her way down the walkway when all of a sudden she felt something on her robes and she staggered to the side. She didn't scream- living with two brothers made her practically impossible to scare, but she almost tipped over. Then she saw that it was him. Eli. Her heart started pounding a little faster. "Hey," she answered, a little breathlessly. She smiled when he said he told her that he'd see her again. Then he was moving, telling her to come with him and she chuckled softly, "You want to show me something?" her tone was a little doubtful, but she also felt excited. At his question, she nodded, but he didn't give her a chance to say anything before he told her to trust him and started running. She laughed again and then started after him. Man, she really needed to run more if she was going to spend time with Eli. "Where are we going?" she called softly. She didn't think her friends would be able to hear, but she also didn't want to take the chance. Elijah Theron Fleming

NODDING HIS HEAD QUICKLY, ELI LET THE mystery of his declaration sit. She was curious, that much was obvious, but would she follow him? Well, that remained to be seen. But, Eli was never the type to sit around ruminating. He turned and ran before she could think about it too long. Which, as far as he was concerned, was the destroyer of adventure.
As he ran toward the tree line, Eli could hear Ashley's laughter. It spurred him on, made his legs peddle a little faster if only to give her a challenge. Her voice sounded behind him and he slowed slightly, reaching back to grab her hand. "In to the forest, obviously!" He said between breaths, cheeks creased by his smile. He pulled them both toward the trees, hopping over a fallen branch before the broached the line and were swallowed whole.
Eli had then run for another minute, waiting until the trees became too thick to manoeuvre them both through safely. Slowing to a stop, he released her hand and turned to face her, panting again. "All I can tell you is," He took a deep breath, his chest expanding greatly. "You'll like it." He cast his eyes to the canopy above, kissing his teeth. "Well, hopefully."

The only thing he did to indicate he heard her question was nod his head. Then he was running and Ashley was rolling her eyes as she followed him. She didn’t know him very well, seeing as how she’d only ever spoken with him once before, but his actions right now we’re not very surprising to him. Why was he so fast? Wait a second, was he moving more quickly now. Ashley wanted to growl at him, but she needed to save her breath right now. She had a feeling her face would be red again when they stopped. He slowed after a minute, reaching for her hand and Ashley let him, squeezing slightly as she tried to pull herself up beside him. He was moving more slowly now, which was a good thing. She barked a short laugh when he said they were headed to the forest and shook her head, but she was more focused on running than talking to him. She followed him into the trees, hiding the nerves as they entered. She’d never been in the forest before. Finally, he slowed down, stopping and Ashley was breathing heavily, just like the first time they met. ”Do you do this on purpose? Make me run?” she said through gasps of air. As was teasing, but she didn’t know if he’d get that. He just said that she’d like it and Ashley laughed, finally having caught her breath. ”I’d better,” she teased with a smirk. ”Or you’ll have to kidnap me again for something more worthwhile.” What was she saying? It wasn’t like he kidnapped her in the first place! ”Lead on, I’m ready to see whatever it is,” Ashley couldn’t stop smiling and she didn’t really want to. She was ready for some fun. ELI'S BROW FURROWED, BUT HE CONTINUED TO smile. Did he make her run on purpose? Well, not directly. He just always seemed to have a reason to run around her. "Maybe," He teased, tilting his head and pushing his tongue in to his cheek. Though he wasn't sure if she was serious, he was and she hadn't punched him yet so all appeared well.
Wrinkling his nose, he barked a laugh. She always spoke so forcefully. Even in jest. He liked that. "Guess that's me warned," He joked, shrugging one shoulder. The idea of 'kidnapping' her again wasn't that terrible of an idea. He liked the thrill of it. Having someone to disappear off in to the night with. He usually had to do this alone.
Hopping, Eli clicked his heels together as he lead the way through the trees. As the foliage thickened he took out his wand and muttered 'lumos', lighting the end so that they could see where they were going. He'd marked the way back by tying a yellow piece of ribbon around intermittent trunks. Every time he passed one he stopped to untie it and slip the rag in to his pocket. "I figured it out after we last spoke," He said vaguely, to fill the space between them. "I couldn't stop thinking about something I'd read in my herbology book." He ran a yellow ribbon through his hands, watching a blackbird flutter through the trees ahead.
Eventually, they ran out of ribbons and the trees broke to reveal a surprisingly well lit clearing. Eli jogged ahead to where he'd left a jar full of pulsing blue light, anticipating the fading evening. He knelt in the grass beside it, waving Ashley over to what looked like a patch of large daisies. "Tanacetum parthenium," He said, rolling its name around his tongue as if he hadn't practised saying it out loud a dozen times already. "Feverfew... they say if you brew it in to a tea it's an amazing migraine cure!"
Turning his head, he looked at Ashley with open and expectant triumph. "You- you could carry around a flask or- or even just keep a bottle in your room." He grinned, softly rubbing a white petal between his fingers. "You wouldn't have to go the medical wing any more," He tilted his head so-so, twisting his lips to one side. "Or, not as much." Sitting back on his calves he drummed his fingers on his thighs, a little nervous all of a sudden. "Do you like it?" He muttered.

He was teasing her. Ashley shook her head and pretended to glare at him, but in just a few seconds she was smiling. She couldn’t help it. She was on an adventure and excited about it. She laughed when he said he was warned now. As they started walking deeper into the forest, Ashley stayed close to Eli. She wasn’t easily scared, but she’d never been in the forest and it was getting dark and she was a little nervous. Except she trusted him. She knew Eli wouldn’t let anything happen to her and that’s why she stayed close. As they walked, he started talking about how he’d figured something out after they talked, something he’d learned in Herbology. Ashley watched him with a curious expression, but didn’t say anything. She was sure he was in the process of explaining himself. Then again, she wasn’t the most patient person. ”I don’t suppose you’ll tell me what you figured out right now?” she asked sweetly. Then they came to a clearing. Ashley followed him to a jar, her eyes narrowing as she tried to figure out what it was. What was Eli planning? She knelt beside him, question on her tongue when he started talking. She shook her head slightly, expression confused when he named something. But then he explained what it was and her mouth formed an o. A migraine cure? He brought her out here to help her? The smile crept back onto her face and as he continued to explain it became a grin. She stared at the flower and then looked back to him. ”Eli,” she started. ”I can’t believe you came out here and found this for me. Thank you so much!” Without thinking, Ashley leaned in and gave him a huge hug. When she realized what she was doing, she pulled back and laughed self-consciously. ”I love it. Thanks.” Ash could hardly believe he’d done something like this after meeting her once. Elijah Theron Fleming

ELI WAS NOT SURPRISED THAT ASHLEY WOULD try and tease it out of him. Twittering sweetly at him, he half expected to turn around and find her batting her eyelashes at him. He made a show of zipping his lips. He'd wanted it to be a surprise. Feeding of the excitement of that and that alone. Eli loved surprises, so why wouldn't anyone else?
Leading her to the flowers, he told her all about it. Fumbling his words as he did. Though, he hadn't minded up until he sat back. Until he slowed enough to allow her a moment to react. That was when the doubts began to trickle in. He reached up and scratched his cheek as she spoke, feeling a little sheepish. "It wasn't that big of-" Her arms wrapped around him and he instinctively lifted his own to hug her back. Shocked, but pleased as the floral scent of her perfume enveloped him. Her hair syrupy sweet. He drew in a breath and allowed her to pull back easily, smiling at his knees.
"I can't figure out why you get them," He said softly, tongue darting out to lick his bottom lip. "But, plants are my thing." He looked up, a slither of pride easing its way in to his chest. "I can help with this." With a big shrug, he reached over and pulled one of the flowers off at the stem. "Plus," He added, one brow lifting daringly. "We haven't even tried it yet." He popped the flower behind his ear, smirking as he reached for another and motioned to make them match by leaning over and threading one in hers. "Might be a crock of shit."

She heard what he said right before she hugged him, that it wasn't big, but it was to her. Ashley couldn't remember the last time that someone who wasn't family did something like this for her. Heck, she couldn't remember when her parents stopped trying to figure out what was causing the migraines and just moved on, giving her potions when necessary. She was about to answer him when he hugged her back and Ashley shivered slightly. She liked how it felt to have his arms around her, even though it was just for a few moments. When she pulled away, she was smiling. She looked away for a second. "It's a big deal to me," she answered softly. "No one else has done something like this for me in a long time." Ash looked back up to him, wanting to see his thoughts and wondering if she knew him well enough to be able to read his expressions. She smiled when he started to explain a little bit and then commented, "I didn't know you like plants." There was probably a lot she didn't know about him. Really, all she did know was that he skipped class and liked to run and was afraid of deep water. She watched and chuckled as he put a flower behind his ear and then froze when he reached over to place another one behind hers. He had to move a little of her hair out of the way in order to have a spot for the flower, but she liked the feeling of him touching her hair. "Well I'll be sure to let you know, once I try it out. I don't have a headache right now, so I'll save it." She looked around the clearing, "How did you find this place?"

A SMALL FROWN OVERTOOK ELI'S FACE AT Ashley's confession. He couldn't quite believe that nobody would have done something similar for her. Eli and his friends were always looking out for each other. When he wasn't watching over Wyatt as he bode his time between transitions, or distracting Zeke from overwhelming exams, they were helping him. With his mom, his brother, his schoolwork. To think that Ashley couldn't say the same, he didn't want to believe it.
"That's... what friends are for," He said with a smile, wrinkling his nose after a second. "Even if that sounds cliche, it's true." He looked at Ashley, watching her watch him. And in it he decided something. If Ashley didn't have that kind of friend, well it was up to him to be that friend. He didn't mind that one bit.
Rambling on about the various properties of Feverfew, Eli suddenly stopped. "I- you-" He closed his eyes dramatically and shook his head. "I don't like plants, I love plants." It was true that their friendship was still infantile, but Eli could talk all day about his few hobbies. "There really is a plant for anything!" He explained, laughing shortly through his nose. "Headaches, allergies, sleep."
Slipping the flower behind her ear, Eli smiled. It was a sweet flower, the yellow middle stark against her blonde hair. He probably looked stupid with his own in, but for her he thought it was quite fitting. "Well, you'll need more than one..." He joked, quirking his brows mischievously.
Shifting on his knees, he pulled them out and crossed them, absently grabbing the jar of light and balancing it in his lap. "I come out here all the time," He shrugged, pushing out his bottom lip as he thought. "You're not supposed to without a professor, but it's good for my books." He didn't immediately explain. The fact that he had a ton of scrapbooks with various snapshots of plants he'd liked and sought to learn about seemed common knowledge to him. "Uh, my- they're my Botanic Collections. I keep a file of what's local and the unusual sightings... I dunno, it's stupid." He waved it off, shaking the jar so that the light shivered and then settled at the bottom.

Now, more than ever, the differences between her life and Eli’s was clear. Her friends were her friends for power and political/social gain. They weren’t really friends to lend support and Ashley didn’t really try to support them either. Obviously Eli’s friends were more true friends. If they were there to help one another during hard times or to learn new things ... yeah, they were from two entirely different spheres. She shrugged a little when he said that it was what friends were for. ”And you don’t thank your friends when they help you with things?” Ash asked curiously. She assumed he did, but maybe they all helped one another so often that thanks were unnecessary. Now Ashley found herself a little curious. He stopped talking and seemed a little stunned and lost for words for a second. Ashley’s smile became a little more hesitant when he closed his eyes, but then he explained that he loved plants and it grew again. She was learning more about him and Ashley liked that fact. ”I didn’t know that,” she commented when he mentioned there was a plant for everything. It was obvious he was very passionate about this and she found that fact intriguing. Eli was just an interesting person. She rolled her eyes when he teased her. ”That’s why we’re out here where a bunch of them are, isn’t it?” Ash quipped right back. ”Or is there another reason you lured me out here?” She was teasing, of course, and wondered if he’d know that. As he shifted to get more comfortable, Ash did the same, twisting so she was sitting on the grass with her feet right beside her. Her eyes widened a little in surprise when he said he came out here all the time. When did he start doing that? Wasn’t it dangerous? It didn’t seem to be right now, but the questions were flooding her mind. Ash held her tongue though. He was talking. She quirked her head to the side, lifting an eyebrow when he mentioned his “books”. He went on to explain more and she smiled, shaking her head when he said it was stupid. ”No, it sounds really interesting. Did you make them all on your own? How many books do you have?” There. She let some of her questions out. Hopefully he wouldn’t feel too self conscious now. Elijah Theron Fleming

WITH A LARGE SHRUG, ELI BRIEFLY CONSIDERED what Ashley was saying. "Sure, I thank my friends!" He said with an obvious laugh. "But it's- it's. I'm never surprised when they do something for me." He pointed at himself distractedly, chewing on the inside of his cheek. "It's... normal..." He added, realising as he said it that it was true. But, even more so, that it obviously wasn't the case for Ashley. It just made Eli sad. He didn't say anything, though. Simply looked at his legs before smiling at her reassuringly.
Talking about plants was better. A safer subject for Eli. He wasn't shocked that Ashley didn't know about his obsession and he didn't mind telling her about it, either. "Well, until a few weeks ago, you barely remembered my name!" He teased, lifting his brows expectantly. He wasn't being serious, but it was funny to recall. As for why he'd brought her here, he tilted his head back and forth. "Yeah, there's that, but..." He was smirking now, one side higher than the other. "I also wanted to see you again, but it's like... there was never a right time."
With the jar in his lap, Eli felt slightly silly for ranting about his books. Nobody really knew he kept them, bar his close friends and his family. It was his own thing. Not even beaten by photography, which had been his mother's thing. No, the scrapbooks were his. When Ashley eased his worries, he lifted his head, dark hair flopping on his forehead. "Yeah, I do!" He declared, reinvigorated. "I have about five now..." Pushing the hair off his forehead he wrinkled his brow. "Well, I'm on my fifth. Maybe- maybe I'll show you sometimes." They were the most organised part of his life, a stark difference from his messy mind.
"C'mon, let's go," He said suddenly, placing the jar back on the ground and rising to his feet. He towered over her, offering both of his hands to punt her up. "No point waiting around here, I have a bunch of clippings back in my dorm." He'd already anticipated showing her and had already practised various brews, with varying success. "I wanna show you something else before we head back."

Eli answered the way she thought he would, confirming that he thanked his friends. She laughed with him, listening when he continued. She shrugged her shoulders. ”That’s not how things with the people I ...” Ash trailed off as she looked down at her hands, feeling a little embarrassed that she was saying that out loud. He obviously already knew. Everyone probably did. So why did she say it out loud? Him talking about his hobby was a relief and Ashley looked up at him. She was glad for the change of topic. She wrinkled her nose at him when he said she didn’t know his name a few weeks ago. ”I did too! I just ... never talked with you.” Ash was surprised to realize she wished she had spoken to him before. She wished they were friends before. Ashley nodded when he said that there was never a right time. ”I’m glad you figured it out. I wanted to see you too.” He might have caught that by how willingly she went with him, but she wanted to be clear. Ashley was glad that he was smiling as he told her he had five. She wanted to ask to see them, but she didn’t know if this was something he showed his friends or not. Then he suggested showing her and Ashley grinned and nodded, ”I would love that!” Maybe she was being too enthusiastic, but she didn’t care. He stood and was offering to help her up and Ashley took his hands without hesitation. She smirked, ”Why’d we come out here if you already had them?” She waited a moment and then laughed. ”I’m just teasing.” Wait. He had something else? ”I’m ready!” Ashley announced, not trying to hide her excitement. Elijah Theron Fleming

IT WAS NO SECRET THAT THE PEOPLE ASHLEY called friends were not Eli's kind of people. Not entirely friendly, and quick to tease. Though, Eli was shocked that they would be so cold with each other. It was one thing for them to ostracise others, but for it to translate within their friend group... Eli found it sad, more so because he felt that Ashley deserved better. Her admittance of it seemed to embarrass her. Eli pretended to get distracted by his shoe laces while she composed herself.
Though, Ashley was quick to bounce back. He found the more he spoke with her about his hobbies and plants, the more she brightened. He'd talk about them all day if it meant she wouldn't look like that again. Almost downtrodden. As she defended her knowledge of his name, Eli pretended to be unconvinced, pulling his chin to his chest with a smirk that said 'suure'. Though his face straightened and warmed soon after. "Me, too," He muttered in reply. It was true, he was glad he'd finally managed to pull her away.
Talking about his books was like revealing he wasn't a good swimmer. But, Ashley's sincere replies made him feel less self conscious about it. The more he said and she said the more comfortable he became. "Okay... then I will," He grinned, nodding his head once.
Nobody but his friends were so readily willing to flick through his scrapbooks. But, Ashley was different than them. She was his friend, sure. Except he floundered more around her. Found himself getting warm in the cheeks. It was because she was pretty, he thought. And not like any of the people he hung around with. Or, how he expected her to be. It was an odd combination.
Pulling her up swiftly, Eli's thumb pressed in to the back of her hand before he let go. Already ushering them in a different direction out of the clearing, Eli laughed. "Because they're beautiful, and so is the forest at night!" He declared, looking up at the canopy were a purple sky peaked through. "Plus," He muttered, dipping his chin and looking at her softly. "I don't know how to talk to you in school, out here it just..." He sighed through his nose, shaking his head. "It felt more... right." If that even made sense.
The trees thickened again, but the walk this time was shorter. He didn't need to mark their way either. Eventually, the air was filled with the sound of bubbling water and soon enough fireflies lit a small pound, fed by a tricking stream over slick rocks. Eli tugged on Ashley's sleeve, his pale face lit by a thousand buzzing fireflies. Blobs of yellow, flickering light. "Wait, it gets better," He whispered. Walking to the ponds edge and getting down on his belly. The earth dampened his front, but he didn't care as he reached a hand over the edge and slapped the surface of the water once.
And suddenly, the air was filled with a chorus of sound. First one frog, hopping in to view, it's vocal sac expanding before it let out a melodious bellow. Soon enough the air was filled with a crescendo of singing frogs. Eli looked over his shoulder, hand dipped in the water, to gauge Ashley's full reaction. "They sing..." He told her, green eyes lit by fireflies and sound.

Ashley was glad that she wasn't the only one that wanted to see him again. It was obvious by all the effort he took into bringing her out here that he'd probably been planning it for a while and a part of her liked that. She liked the fact that after their first meeting, he was making efforts to make sure they would do something together again. She grinned and nodded when he said that he would show her his books. "Good. If you forget, I'll remind you," she promised. Ashley had a good memory, especially when it came to things she was interested in, and she was definitely interested in Elijah Fleming. She wanted to learn as much about him as she could and she was sure that seeing the books he created was a good way to do that. In no time at all, she was up on her feet, blushing a tiny bit when he seemed to squeeze her hand for a moment. What was going on? Ashley didn't blush. She was calm and composed. It was one of the things she was very well known for with the people she spent most of her time with, but Eli was different. She didn't know what it was about him, but she seemed to feel more when she was around him. All the same, she hoped that he didn't see her blush. He just wanted her as a friend, right? She nodded when he said that the flowers were beautiful, as was the night. He was definitely right about that, and Ashley found herself wanting to thank him again for bringing her out here. She'd do that later. Then he was looking at her and Ashley gazed up into his eyes. They were green, but in the dark she couldn't tell. She felt heat rise to her cheeks again when he said he didn't know how to talk to her in school. Why was this happening to her? She nodded, pretending like she wasn't blushing and still hoping it was too dark for him to tell. "I know what you mean. I want to talk to you there too, but .." she glanced away for a second, one of her hands reaching up to play with her hair. "It does feel right out here." She didn't know how to approach him when he was with his friends. They would probably glare at her or something. She wasn't normally the nicest person, as he knew. Ashley also didn't want him to try and talk to her around her friends. That would not end well, but she didn't say that out loud. She didn't want to talk about her friends and ruin the good time they were having. A small smile started to grow on her face when she heard the sound of water nearby. Ashley loved water! There was a tiny stream and a pond and about a million fireflies and she felt like she just stepped into some type of novel. "Eli," she breathed his name as she stared around herself in wonder. When he said that it got better, she gave him a doubtful look. Then he was lying down and hitting the water of the pond and her mouth fell open as the frogs were, indeed, singing. Eli turned to look at her, but she was already joining him on the wet ground, not even caring. On her stomach, Ashley stared at the frogs, a huge smile on her face. Then she glanced over at Eli and shook her head disbelievingly. "This is amazing," she whispered as softly as she could, not wanting to ruin the mood. She lifted a hand over the water and dipped her pointer finger in it, turning her head to the side so it could rest on her other arm as she closed her eyes and enjoyed the sound. She was facing Eli and just letting herself enjoy this new place. It was incredible. Elijah Theron Fleming

ELI WAS RELIEVED THAT ASHLEY SEEMED TO understand where he was coming from. He thought he was being crazy. As if he were avoiding her. Denying the time they'd spent together when they'd suddenly became friends. Or, on a worse note, if he'd made the entire feeling of camaraderie up. All scenarios he'd played out in his head multiple times over the last few days.
Leading them both through the forest, Eli trilled with excitement. It was his favourite place to be, and the singing frogs were beat by few, but seen by just as little. A secret delight in a place few students were allowed to venture. He scooted to make room for her by the water's edge but even still they were touching from shoulder to ankle when she joined him. He didn't mind it at all, his skin tingling underneath his clothes.
"I know..." He breathed in agreement, so pleased she appreciated it. Something unfamiliar easing in his chest as she did. The frogs sang and Eli turned to watch Ashley watch them. His expression softening from delight and relief to admiration. She really was pretty. Her skin lit by the reflection of a dozen fireflies in the stream. In his mind a phrase began to take shape; that he was glad to know her. And to show her all this. A scene so integral to his entire love of wildlife.
As the sound began to diminish and the frogs bellowed their last soulful tune, Eli reached in to the water and dipped his fingers in halfway. Pulling them out, he turned them and flicked the remnants of water in Ashley's direction playfully. His brows lifted in challenge, daring her as he rolled away and out of reach. "Having fun?" He asked her with a mischievous grin.
