It had been a few months since Dana Knox’s father and sister had passed. She remembered being in one of her Potion classes, practicing and stirring pots with her friends when the head of her house was welcomed inside before they approached her, a long frown on their face. At first, she assumed she was in trouble for doing something rather stupid with Lars or even Tamara but that wasn’t the case.
Brought to her dormitories, Dana slowly began to break down as the news passed through one ear and left the other. As her eyes widened, rimmed with threatening tears, Dana could have sworn she was deaf for at least five minutes. The head of her house’s mouth kept running yet the Knox child could hear no sound. They were dead. And Noah was under critical care. Aka a coma.
While her sister and herself rarely had sibling disputes, she had many fights with her father while growing up. Dana would listen to the arguments between her father and mother and their regards around their divorce. One night especially, Dana barged in on the two having a psychical fight; breaking it apart and even getting hurt herself. From that same night, she despised both parents and refused to speak with them unless it was Hogwarts matters.
Yet that didn’t matter anymore. It was too late for the Knox girl to even apologise for her childish behaviour because her father was dead.
As the hour hand upon her watch struck one in the morning, Dana sighed to herself, the cold air nipping upon her skin and her fingertips as she sat on the grass not too far from Hogwarts grounds. She watched closely as the air she breathed out disappeared into the night sky, while her eyes trailed upwards to the stars that shone their welcome. With a small smile on her lips as her blue eyes were stuck on the night’s sky, the blond girl’s fingers fumbled for something hidden in her Hogwarts robes. Out she pulled a small packet of foreign cigarettes she had stolen from her mother upon her return to Hogwarts.
Even though it was forbidden to be out of the school grounds, the Headmasters and many teachers allowed Dana as an exception; as even while mourning she still worked hard for good grades. As the lid keeping the hazardous items was flipped open, Dana reached in pulling out a singular one. Drawing out her wand, she mumbled the spell “Incendio” against the tip of the cigarette, as she had forgotten her lighter back in the dormitories.
With her wand back in her robes, blue eyes glanced away from the stars and focused on the orange hues that appeared when the Knox girl inhaled. Although smoking kills, Dana rather much enjoyed it as she would always focus on the little things like the burning colours or the direction the smoke flew towards.
But, with the sounds of nearby twigs snapping, the blond slowly turned her head to the direction of the sound, her free hand gripping her hidden wand while her other held the cigarette at bay.
”Lars?” she called out, assuming it was her friend. There were multiple times he would find her here, breaking the rules himself. But this time Dana felt rather uneasy.

It was really no surprise that Angie had been out late. She always was. She found she couldn’t sleep until the wee hours of the morning and hated to waste the time laying in bed, tossing and turning and disturbing her roommates while they were actually asleep. So, she often roamed instead. She loved the freedom that the night gave her, even though she was technically not allowed such freedom. To say that she was never caught, or often got away with it, would be a huge lie. She was caught at least half of the times that she left the common room past curfew. People had come to expect her out, however, she had also come to know the walking patterns of those checking for students out of bed. If she left just as they were heading up to the towers, she’d have plenty of time to make her escape; which she did tonight. The night air helped her think.
As she left the castle, she saw a figure sitting on the grounds below. She was a familiar sight. A fellow Slytherin, a little bit younger than she. Angie approached, not trying to be quiet, not trying to sneak up on her or anything. She stepped on a twig on the dark lawns and the silhouette spoke. “No, I’m afraid Mr. Handsome has probably gone to bed.” Angie smirked as she made her way to the girl. She knew Lars as a good friend of Danas, and truthfully, was a quite handsome individual. Definitely Angie’s type. “How long have you been out here?” Angie asked, sitting down on the dewy grass with the younger girl. Angie wasn’t exactly one for advice, but, she was curious.

With a sigh of relief, Dana loosened her grip on her hidden wand in her cloak. Turning her attention back to the nights view that she was able to see on the field in Hogwarts, the blond brought her hand to her lips, inhaling the addictive drug before releasing a heavy puff of air, with the smoke flying towards the sky. A place she hoped her father and sister rested well in.
The words that the other girl muttered past through one of Dana’s ears before leaving the other, the only sound that she paid attention to was her own inhaling of the cigarette and the burning noise it made as she went back for more and more drags. As the blond’s head turned, her blue eyes settled upon the girl watching as she sat on the grass alongside Dana herself.
Yet while Dana didn’t pay much attention to the other figure, the words that left the latter’s mouth made the Knox girl think. Mr Handsome huh? she thought to herself before the Knox girls lips dropped open and the words ”Not long” left them.
Though it wasn’t smart Dana was so relaxed around a girl she barely knew; her eyes glanced over at the latter once more; taking in her features. The girl seemed rather familiar and laid back and even approached Dana rather friendly as if they knew each other already. Taking another drag at her cigarette, she inhaled rather deeply, before puffing out a large amount of smoke through her mouth and even her nose, blowing it lightly in the girl’s direction.

Angie nodded at the girls curiosity about her, she realized that not everyone had been observing people like she had been. Angie liked to be in the know. She was a huge gossip and liked to make sure that she was making an informed choice about who she was spending her time with, so she kept her options open and asked about people when they caught her interest. Lately, Dana had caught her interest. "Angie James. I'm a few years ahead of you in Slytherin." the blonde said, reaching into the inner pocket of her jacket and pulling out the flash that she kept there. Sometimes, she transfigured it into a pocket book. Tonight wasn't one of those times. She wasn't worried about getting caught. Angie undid the knob at the top and took a swig of the fire whisky inside that she had bought off of a strange man at the Hogs Head. "Care for a drink?" she asked casually. Angie had head about the girls family, it seemed to her that Dana could use a drink.

Smoke left the Knox girl’s lips once more, flying towards the night’s sky and evaporating into small particles. Watching her own smoke seemed to fascinate Dana; even though she knew it was killing her deep down too. As the other girl spoke her name, the younger blonde found herself nodding lightly. Angie was one name Dana remembered. Upon her return to Hogwarts, she heard the soft whispers of people and their questions of “What would Angie think?” ”Seems you’re a big shot here. Like the school’s paper gossip.” A chuckle left Dana’s mouth before her lips pursued, lifting the ‘deadly drug’ to her lips once more.
As another puff of smoke wandered to the sky, blue eyes turned – watching Angie from the corner of her eye. As the sound of a knob squeaking off its bottle caught her attention, Dana watched the other: mesmerised as she took a swing st the bottle. Seemed to be like pure whiskey. she thought to herself. When Angie offered the bottle over, Dana couldn’t help but laugh once more. ”Seriously?” She questioned, thinking to herself of what the catch could be. Her thoughts left her with a shrug of her shoulders as a result, grasping the bottle and taking a swing herself.
While Dana smoked, she knew she wasn’t that big of a drinker. At times her mother would offer wine or even gin to her younger self – especially at the times Dana heard soft weeps during the rough patches of her parents relationship. But now, her throat burned. A lot worse than the many times she sat with her mother. Even worse than her own smoking habits. That’s uh- A strong drink you got there.” She stated, coughing lightly; her award winning smile returning to her lips.
”Though…What’s the catch?” People like Angie were all Dana met lately, people who seemed to be fake-interested in her because she lost her father and sister. The thought of it confused Dana. She was no one special. | notes: sorry for the wait!! |

Angie found herself being called a ‘big shot’ and she rolled her eyes and let almost a snort escape her. She wouldn’t use those words to describe her. She was social. Very much so, however, she wouldn’t exactly consider herself a role model or someone that everyone knew. She was known by her people, possibly known in mild infamy by others, but she didn’t really care about being known. She cared about having fun. If doing that made her known, it was just a side effect.
The girl seemed hesitant to take the drink, but she did so and then passed it back to Angie after insisting that it was a strong drink. The blonde laughed a little, “yeah I suppose it is.” Angie liked her liquor strong. She didn’t want to waste time drinking more when a few swigs of something strong could do the trick for cheaper and quicker. “No catch.” Angie shrugged. She may have been known to be a bit mean at times but she wasn’t selfish, at least, not when it suited her. “Just sharing the wealth…” she took another swig and then recapped the flask, but didn’t put it away. She wasn’t sure what to say, she didn’t really want to say anything, but since she had already sat down, here she’d stay.

Dana Knox’s eyes looked back and forth between herself and Angie who sat next to her. As her elder in Hogwarts itself, Dana laughed to herself at the thought that Angie wasn’t exactly…The best kind of role model. Especially with the strong liquor held in her hand and the half-empty pack of cigarettes held in Dana’s that weren’t clearly going to waste, Dana mentally confirmed it. Pale fingers rose against her full lips once more, taking in the cigarette and releasing a strong puff of smoke in Angie’s direction, waiting to speak after nodding to the other blonde’s comments.
”Wealth huh?” Dana questioned, her hand extending to reach for the bottle once more. While the two of them enjoyed one another’s company, what harm would it be to create some form of small talk? ”What’s it like? Being popularrr, knowing everything. You know. A social person?” Truthfully, Dana was curious; considering the time she spent out of Hogwarts led towards her social decline. She wasn’t seen as the bubbly Knox girl anymore – more so the Knox girl that somehow had a free pass for everything. Even while mourning, Dana managed to keep her grades up.

Angie gave a snort laugh when Dana asked what it was like to be popular. Angie never really considered herself popular, she was going more for infamy than popularity. She wasn’t well known for being preppy or cool, she was well known for not caring. The thing about that was that Angie did care, she cared an awful lot. But she acted as if she didn’t. Most of the time, it was easier than having to care, she could almost turn it off at this point. It was like a light switch. “Uhh it’s cool I guess.” Angie said almost dismissively. “Though it also means the professors keep a closer eye on me than most.” that surly wasn’t a perk. “Mostly you find that people are annoying but some people are worth the annoyance. The fun and attractive people, mostly.” she admitted.

Dana couldn’t help but let a chuckle leave her lips as she nodded her head in agreement. Ever since returning to Hogwarts from the fatal accident, it seemed to had come to her attention that Hogwarts had many…many beautiful people and every single one of them had approached her to share their condolences but only one person remained on the Knox girl’s mind. ”I definitely agree.” She muttered, bringing up the cigarette to her lips, inhaling and then letting out a heavy sigh, the smoke dispersing from her nostrils. To Dana, her mother would always say only someone who smokes often could perfect such a skill. Sorry Mum. Dana thought to herself.
”Sorry for calling you…my friend’s name.” Dana stated, pausing before gently adding in: ”Earlier.” Dana reached over for the drink that Angie decided to share, thirsty for another sip. ”It’s kind of a habit for him to find me out here.” While it was true, Dana hadn’t seen Lars for a few nights; only catching him falling asleep on his hand during the times they would actually spend together.

Angie passed the flask back over when the girl reached for it. She was never one to keep her goods to herself, that was one of the reasons she got in trouble so often. But, if she was able to get it, why wouldn’t she let other people have the same opportunity? However, the professors had caught on to her supply and always found reasons to keep her in the castle on Hogsmead weekends so she couldn’t sneak into the Hogshead and meet her dealer. “Yeah no worries about that.” Angie shrugged, she didn’t mind being assumed to be someone else. She had seen the two together a lot and knew they were close anyway. “So are you two just friends or is there something more there?” she asked, genuinely. She had no idea what, if anything was going on between them. But she did see them together quite a lot, she wouldn’t be surprised if something was going on.

Dana Woods-Knox found herself raising a brow as she looked back in Angie’s direction, curious to where the question had arisen from. A laugh left the Knox lips as she brought the flask to her lips, her throat swallowing quite a load of the alcohol. Closing the lid to the flask, Dana stared out into the darkness that surrounded the grounds of Hogwarts and sighed. ”Just friends I guess.” While that was true, Dana had developed a crush on her friend, but had no intention of revealing it to anyone, Angie or Lars himself. But Tamara and Tia had somehow figured it out.
Soon, Dana was reminded that she was in fact still smoking, as the cigarette’s burning side soon burned into her fingers, showing how small the small-killing-machine had become. Dropping the cigarette to the grass while she shook her fingers, her left hand fumbled for the pack resting in her pocket, preparing to pull out another. But she looked over at Angie and offered one.

Just friends, Dana confirmed. Angie nodded along with the words and then accepted the cigarette when she was offered one. The blonde pulled out the lighter she kept in her jacket pocket even when she didn’t have anything to smoke, which she hadn’t even thought of grabbing from the bottom of the trunk at the foot of her bed before coming out here. Angie smoked casually, probably not more than 1 or 2 every week, she wasn’t sure how she managed the willpower not to have another as soon as she put one out. She substituted it with other bad habits, she guessed. Maybe it was magic. She rarely had one on her, but the lighter was a staple. Angie liked fire, watching the flame calmed her. Sometimes when she wanted to be in her own head, she’d just flip it on and watch it as she thought. “Okay then.” Angie said with a shrug, not pushing it much further. She had no real reason to, the answer, whatever it was, didn’t affect her in any way, thus it wasn’t much worth pursuing. Truthfully, Angie didn’t have much to say to the girl. She didn’t know what to say and words seemed unnecessary. Angie wasn’t always very much of a talker. If Dana wanted to say something, Angie would indulge, but the Slytherin wasn’t afraid of silence.

From a comfortable silence came the soft noises of blowing out smoke, the flicking of a lighter’s wheel and the soft swish and swosh sounds from the alcohol that rested in Angie’s bottle. While Dana didn’t really know the other blonde too well, she had enjoyed her time alongside her – keeping questions and things that she didn’t want to talk about to a minimum. Small things made it easier for Dana to brush her thoughts to the side, along with the comfort of not having to really speak up about recent tragic events. She knew that Angie and herself probably wouldn’t get along by the time Dana’s mourning phase had passed by but the moment against the other now had been simple and enjoyable.
For most of the rest of the night, the two slowly finished off Dana’s pack as well as the bottle that Angie had kept on her. Dana could tell that the blonde wasn’t really that much of a smoker, as while she had a lighter of her own she didn’t seem to fond of keeping her own cigarettes. That and also Dana noticed the absence of the slight dent’s cigarette burns seemed to leave on the tips of fingers. The quiet surroundings of Hogwarts as well as soft hoots of Owls, crackling of nearby twigs and other wildlife made it easier for the two – especially Dana – to sit in a comfortable silence. But when blue eyes soon caught site of the time, the Knox girl knew it would be best for the two to split up and head back towards their dorms.
Dana offered to leave first, considering if she was caught the professors would somewhat understand. As she stood, the blonde dusted herself and rid herself of dirt before thanking Angie for not pressing on with different things. She began to walk across the large hill, in the direction of the nearest door before turning back and giving a short wave. By the early morning when Dana eventually awoken – too awake to even sleep, she had passed by the area she had left, looking through the windows and obviously saw no one there. It was like nobody was there past After Hours.
