THE TRIP TO DIAGON ALLEY, FLOO POWDER IN hand, was not unfamiliar for Albus. Though, he dreaded this particular day as it was something of a first. The first time Albus had had lunch with his mother in almost a month. The first time he'd met with her since James had returned. Albus was in no mood to field any chatter about it. In fact, lately Albus was in no mood to field any questions about James or Harry at all. And so he had chosen to avoid everyone at all costs. It was easier that way. But not for long.
Arriving at the small cafe, Albus was early as he took a seat at their usual table by the window. It was colder than usual, winter well and truly on its way. But inside the cafe it was welcoming and warm, the greeter knew him by name, they had frequented the establishment so often. But, Albus's stomach still turned uncomfortably as he sat with his back to the door, disliking the idea of watching his mum approach and the enter. It was too much unwelcome anticipation. He'd ordered their usual drinks before she arrived and was sipping a cup of black coffee before he heard her familiar voice behind him.

[googlefont="Open Sans Condensed:300"] BUT WE DON'T WANNA GROW UP [attr="class","next"] FALL 2024 So much had happened in such little time that she felt like she was sometimes drowning. Losing her memories had been the first step of it all, but after her husband disappeared into the night leaving behind a single note, she felt overwhelmed. Over time, it seemed like one should expect the worse when it came to the life-or-death of Harry Potter, the patriarch of the Potter household. Then came the trashy gossip about her being in love with someone else and having planned Harry’s death herself, and then Ron finding his wand alone in the crumbled leaves of the ground. Ginny couldn’t take much more of it and have left herself locked in her office at work, pushing paper after paper through her hands. Even at home, she kept herself busy, the silence of it all slowly getting to her – sometimes she wasn’t even home, spending much of her time with her mother. Sleeping in the bed that she shared with Harry was just a reminder that she could be a widower. He was ‘The Boy Who Lived’ so what was different this time? Even though she knew where each of her children was, didn’t mean that she got to see many of them. Lily was away at school, James had returned but likely spent most of his time juggling work and his girlfriend and Albus had almost fallen off the face of the earth. When he contacted her after a month of avoidance, and her giving him the space he likely needed, she was glad to meet up with him. They arranged to meet at a nice little café, the normal spot for their meetings since he had graduated. She arrived not long before the designated time and walked towards the spot they always sat, coming up behind him at the table with the drinks already seated on the table. She smiled, “Hello Albus,” she spoke as she slowly rounded around from behind him and slipped into the seat from across him, “It’s great to see you. Have you been well?”

DESPITE THE FACT THAT IT HAD BEEN HIS IDEA TO meet, Albus still grew tense when he heard his mother come up behind him, as if taken by surprise. He set his coffee cup down, smiling thinly as she settled in to the seat opposite him. She'd lost much of her memory, and her husband, but she still looked the same. Still so put together, cheery and eager as she pulled in her seat. A direct opposite of her son, who was rigid and stern in his immediate appearance. Sometimes, he wondered if she cared, or if it was all an act. #
"Fine," Is what he actually said, nodding in to his cup as he thought about how long it had been since they'd had an afternoon one-on-one, and immediately regretting doing so. "Good to see you, too." He reached up to scratch an invisible itch at the back of his neck. "How's the Prophet?" He asked, genuinely curious as he picked up his mug for another sip. He wasn't that great with Quidditch any more. He wasn't great with anything that wasn't work or his potions, lately.

[googlefont="Open Sans Condensed:300"] BUT WE DON'T WANNA GROW UP [attr="class","next"] Although she had no real memory of what Albus was as a child or anything about the relationship they had since his birth until the moment her memory was stolen, she still loved her son dearly. She loved all of her children, even if she lost how to be a mother when the dark wizards took so much from her that day. She couldn’t remember her life with Harry, the happiness of their wedding, each birth of her child, their acceptance letter, and so much more. But the maternal nature that laid in wait within her heart, that much she felt for her son. She could tell that something was up by his body language, a rigid and stern look in his appearance but she did not comment on it when he spoke that he was fine with a nod into his cup. Instead, she picked up the mug that sat before her seat, likely ordered by Albus before she arrived, and took a sip of it. Her eyes were on him like a hawk, and she could quickly see that he wanted to be anywhere but here, and her heart fell. What had gone wrong to make Albus this way? She smiled as she placed the mug back down on the table, “The Prophet is good, pretty busy as of late with all the activity in the world. What about you, how is the auror training going?” she said with a smile, wanting to add that his father would be proud of him for following in his footsteps. But she held her tongue of those words; she didn’t want to add fuel to the fire that seemed to be burning within her second born son.

SOMETIMES ALBUS FORGOT THAT HIS MUM HAD lost her memory. It was easy to do so, she looked to same. But, then she'd smile at him and he'd remember the blank stare she'd had just after she'd lost it all. How he wasn't been a permanent fixture in her adult life any more. And yet, he still turned up to meet her for coffee. He still smiled and nodded as she told him about the Prophet. She'd been a legendary Quidditch player once, now she just wrote for the paper. He didn't know why, but he never pictured his mum behind a desk.
"Auror training is..." He knew she was supposed to ask, that it was perfunctory, but it still tripped him when she did. "It's hard, I guess." He shrugged his shoulders, lifting his mug and sipping the bitter black coffee until it numbed his tongue. "Have you heard from Lily lately?" He asked innocuously. Secretly wondering if she'd heard any news about those energy drinks he'd dropped off to her. It had been a risk, and every time an owl arrived for him he wondered if it was a Howler reprimanding him for encouraging his sister's erratic behaviour. He didn't ask about James.

[googlefont="Open Sans Condensed:300"] BUT WE DON'T WANNA GROW UP [attr="class","next"] Meeting with Albus was a highlight in her life, mainly because she had only these moments to remember what it was like to be a mother. Having lost her memory a while back, she was still trying to get in the grove of everything. And now with Harry gone, with him not there to guide her, she didn’t know how well she was doing as a mother. But seeing as Albus continued these coffee meet-ups with her, she was sure she wasn’t doing too terribly. None of her children had spat at her for being a horrible mother, so maybe she was doing her best? They were old enough to understand, and a part of Ginny couldn’t wait to figure out how to regain her memory, but the part that didn’t want the pain of loving a dead man so passionately to return and make her life worse than it was. She nodded her head as he told her that the auror training was hard, and she wasn’t surprised. From what she remembered, it wasn’t the easiest job to get and took a lot of training and determination to survive. “Well I’m glad you are still sticking to it, your father would be proud,” she said with a soft smile on her face, bitting her inner cheek as the words slipped through. She cleared her throat and frowned as Albus asked about Lily and hearing from her and she shook her head, “No—why?” she questioned, raising an eyebrow, “Should I have heard from Lily lately? Please don’t tell me your sister is getting in trouble at school and only telling you…”

THERE WAS SOMETHING CURDLING IN ALBUS'S stomach, and he feared what might happen if he opened his mouth. Though it was so obvious that his mum was doing her best, Albus couldn't help but hate when she mentioned his father. He'd disappeared and Albus had grieved, but eventually that grief had turned in to resentment. It was the only way he could stomach his absence. That Harry had gone and gotten himself killed, and left him with a mum who didn't remember him and a brother who walked off as well.
"Thanks, mum." He forced himself to say, coming from between tightly gritted teeth as he lifted his coffee cup to his lips. He didn't want his dad's 'supposed' pride. Nor did he wish for anyone to talk of him like they knew exactly what he'd say. But, coming from Ginny, he couldn't deny it. He loved too much to be spiteful. But, he'd rather have her pride than his father's. Only one of them had stayed and been a parent, after all. Memories be damned. However, he couldn't help but cringe as he tried to change the subject and instead, left her spiralling in to concern.
"No-no, wait-" he tried to interrupt, reaching out to grab her hand before she went in to a fit of worry that left her sweeping out of the room and straight to Hogwarts. "Nothing's the matter, mum." He said with a slight, but nervous laugh. He patted her hand once before pulling back, his hand cold and unwelcoming, but warmer around his cup. "You've gotta stop worrying like that." He told her, though he suffered much the same as she did - just less verbally. "I was just wondering..." He gestured with one hand, averting his gaze with a snort. "You know, making conversation..."

AND I DON'T REALLY CARE IF NOBODY ELSE BELIEVES 'CAUSE I'VE STILL GOT A LOT OF FIGHT LEFT IN ME
Sometimes Ginny hated when people brought up Harry to her, and here she was, doing the same to her child. She could tell that his thanks were forced, and she bit her bottom lip, wishing that she could take it back. But at this point, if Harry was dead, she knew that he was somewhere and was proud that his son was following in his footsteps. Or at least, she liked to believe that he would be proud - Ginny knew that she was. She frowned in guilt, "And I'm also proud of you." she whispered, a smile clear as day on her face.
Albus had changed the subject to his sister, and quickly he interrupted her rant. However, she took note of the laugh that was filled with nervousness as he said that nothing was wrong, going on to tell her not to worry about it, that he was making conversation. She raised an eyebrow, "Are you sure? Alright, no I've not heard from your sister nor your brother..." she said truthfully, the only one that she had heard from recently was Albus inviting her out to catch up.

THE COULDN'T REMEMBER WHAT THEY'D DONE for his fifth birthday, but Albus still felt like his mum could read his mind. Her memories were gone, but her instincts remained. Sharp was a knife and quicker to cut through him. He dropped his gaze and frowned in to his cup, feeling a twist in his gut that wasn't entirely unpleasant, but was completely unwelcome. He'd wanted her pride, but he felt as if he were under a microscope. His every flaw and insecurity laid bare.
"Leave off, mum." He pretended to joke, a slight curl to his lips as he hid behind his coffee cup. "You don't have to give me a pep talk." He told her, trying to keep that little smile in place, but he was serious. "I'm not failing flying class any more." He quirked his brows and took a slow drink from his cup, the bitterness a welcome distraction. And while his mum worried in earnest, he knew that it wasn't always easy for her. She'd lost her husband and her memories. They were still all sort of strangers, stumbling around trying to see which pieces fitted where.
"As sure as I'll ever be," was all Albus said in answer. Lily was always in some kind of trouble and James was probably posing for a front cover or a brand deal. He didn't mean that harshly, but there was some discontent plain on his face. Sometimes, Albus felt like the only one trying with their mum. He'd been so close to her before she'd lost her memories. Before he'd distanced himself and holed up in his room. Before his dad had disappeared... "Does it bother you?" He said after a long beat of silence, awkward in its implication. "That they don't... you know..." He scrunched his nose. "Try more?"

Ginny smiled at her son, and she truly was proud of them all. While she only remembered them as these adults instead of young children running around the Potter home, she still felt connected with them. Though she felt guilty for forgetting little things about their past together, they slowly allowed her back in and filled in the blanks. And now, with Harry gone, they were all she had left of the world she couldn't remember - all she had left of her husband. She could see a piece of him in them, especially in Albus himself. Whether they saw it or not themselves didn't matter - she knew what she saw.
'Leave off, mum. You don't have to give me a pep talk. I'm not failing flying class anymore.' Ginny laughed a little, smiling at him as he took a sip of his drink, and she shook her head. The ginger looked at her son, "You're right - I don't. The only person I have to worry about now is Lily...but only until the end of this term. Soon, all my babies will be gone..." she said, her tone bittersweet.
She lifted her drink to her lips and took a sip just as Albus spoke, asking if it bothered her. She looked at him, listening as he finished and concluded her question. She looked at him for a moment, setting her drink down.
"Sometimes...but I understand, sort of. The mother you all grew up with is gone...she's somewhere inside, and I can barely reach her myself. I don't remember raising you all, and I feel like that has destroyed your relationship with me. I have to give it time...once your father is back home and I get my memory back, perhaps it will bother me ten-times more. But now...I understand why you all would want to distance yourself." she said with a sad smile on her face.

ALBUS DIDN'T HAVE THE HEART TO REMIND HER of how wrong she was. He'd made a pretty swell job of covering for Lily and her academic failures. Yes, she'd graduate, but with what? He didn't want her to expect great things and yet he didn't have the heart to break her in easily either. He'd fielded letters, rumours and appointments that might drop Lily in trouble. Which really wasn't his job, and probably wasn't as helpful as he thought, but he couldn't stop. He just wanted her to keep smiling like that. Like eventually everything would fall in to place, so he smiled back thinly.
"I mean, I still live with you." Al said with a stiff smile, much to his dismay. "And I doubt Lily's going anywhere for a while." Unless she runs off to join the nearest travelling circus, he thought as he sipped his black coffee to stop himself saying so. But, he reminded himself, just because he lived at home didn't mean he seen much of his mother. He worked early and didn't come home til late - if he went home at all. He was practically sharing Rosie's flat by this point.
His mum's heartfelt tone felt like a punch to the chest, and Al couldn't even look at her as she went on. She was so hopeful, but he wondered if that was because she didn't remember what she was missing. He didn't think she'd ever remember teaching them to fly, or tucking them in to bed at night with snippets from Quidditch Through the Ages. How close he'd been to her, how he admired her. So much was lost, and yet she still sat before him with that same courageous smile. He couldn't only bear to disagree with her on one thing, unable to help himself as he mumbled. "I don't think he's coming back, mum." He fiddled with the cuff of his shirt. "Not this time." And then he forced himself to look at her, eyes blazing with his own truths.

My power's turned on starting right now I'll be strong I'll play my fight song And I don't really care if nobody else believes Ginny always wondered what type of mother she had been, what type of mother she would be now if her memories still lingered. From what she knew, what others had told her, she wasn't that bad. She was no Molly Weasley, that was for sure - but she was a damn good mother. She gave up her dream of Quidditch after having James to spend more time at home, working for the Prophet. She worked for them up until she lost her memory, returning to them when she finally understood what was happening. But it still made her feel like something was missing, and it showed way more without Harry around. When Ginny revealed that she only had Lily left for one more term and then she would have no children at home - Albus revealed that he would stay still with her, and so would Lily. She smiled gently, "Well, that's good to know. But I doubt you both will want to stay with your mom for the rest of your life..." Brushing a strand of ginger hair behind her ear, she revealed how she felt inside. A small rant that spoke a thousand words, and then, when he removed his gaze from her own. 'I don't think he's coming back, mum. Not this time.' Ginny shook her head, "Have you really lost hope, Albus?" she questioned, his gaze returning to her own with a hardness to it. He really had lost hope. "Until I see proof that he's gone, I'm going to hold out that he is coming back. Because the last time I thought your father was dead...he wasn't, and he defeated Voldemort." The name of their last enemy left her lips in a whisper, not wanting anyone else but Albus to hear it. She no longer feared the name, not since he was defeated by her husband all those years prior. WITH A SLIGHT SMILE, ALBUS TRIED NOT TO make it seem like he agreed with her. In reality, Al had only been staying at home to help his mum. He'd always planned to move out within his first year of training. Maybe move in with his best friend, Rosie, or a couple of other trainee's. But, then his mum lost her memories and his dad went missing. And then James, too. It was like Al was the only person left to keep the family together. He bore it well, with little outward complaint. But, it wore him down slowly until he was almost meek. Colourless.
"We're fine." He sighed, looking down in to his cup. He certainly couldn't leave Lily. His mum, he supposed, would be fine. She was grown. But, Lily was already so visibly struggling. He felt a little sick at the thought, unable to fix it. Unfortunately, she had been especially close with their dad, and it showed. And though Ginny remembered very little of her marriage to Harry Potter, she still defended him ceaselessly. It annoyed Albus, that nobody would consider the possibility that he might just be... gone. His mother's passionate reply put him off and he became gravely silent as she powered onward.
"I-" Albus stuttered, catching his breathe shakily as he wondered how best to handle what he said next. He'd been honest, rational, in his opinion about what he thought of his father. He'd left, ever the hero, and hadn't told them a thing. Now, he was likely dead, and they were left with no answers. He couldn't pretend to miss him normally, because he missed him angrily, furiously. With his whole body and then some left over. But, his mum worried, so he shook his head instead. "This isn't the battle of hogwarts, mum." He said simply, sadly. "It's just life." And then, he said no more. Finishing his coffee and promising her that he'd be home that night, because he'd upset her once already. And then they parted ways.
[END ALBUS]
Ginevra Molly Potter i ended this cause it's a bit older and we can maybe do something more up to date?
