JANUARY 2022 YVONNE'S FIRST YEAR...
Passing through the courtyard into a series of more hallways seemed to confuse Yvonne De Snaijer. For the past few months, the new Horned Serpent student was settling into Ilvermorny, with things about the wizarding school that confused her to this very day. As a declaration to herself, the young De Snaijer was determined to figure out every crook and cranny of the school, to eventually understand where most of her classes where without the need of a passing student or a member of the Student Council.
Ever since the Sorting Ceremony that Ilvermorny hosted with every new First Year student, Yvonne felt her mood worsen as she was separated from both her older sister and her twin. One in Wampus, the other in Thunderbird. What were the odds? There were questions left unanswered at times, considering Yvonne knew she could only trust her sister to not respond sarcastically. But as she rubbed her bare hands together, lightly pushing air into it to warm her freezing fingers just a bit, dark eyes glanced around, in search of a sign that would’ve directed the young girl to her sister’s common room.
A flurry of students with blue and cranberry coloured robes just like herself passed by, none who seemed to be interested in helping her, which resulted with the De Snaijer groaning to herself a bit. She wished the muggle twin-theory that a twin could sense what the other was feeling or thinking was real, so Yvette would seek her out. The Horned Serpent pinched at her skin gently as she walked, the oversized robes barely touching the ground of the hallway. But when Yvonne glanced up, noticing someone standing alone at the end of the hallway, she raised her robes slightly, her voice raising as she called out: ”Excuse me!”

Jace was happy to be back at school again. Not necessarily for the studies, though he did enjoy learning about magic. No, Jace was here for the entertainment. He loved exploring the grounds, learning new things about Ilvermorny and, of course, meeting new people as well. Plus, this year he had the added bonus of not being the youngest in the school. He had made it through his first year and the Thunderbird was excited to continue on with his second. It was a Saturday, and Jace was trying to decide what he wanted to do with himself, since he didn't have too much homework yet. He could relax or do something fun ... or try to meet some new people. He stood at the end of a hallway, looking at the people around to see if he could find a familiar face. His head turned automatically when he heard someone shout "Excuse me!" It was a girl, obviously a member the Horned Serpent house if her robes were anything to go by. Jace took a step closer to her. "Hi, do you need any help?" He asked. He wasn't sure if she was trying to talk to him or someone else, but he could at least try to help. If she wasn't talking to him, then he could get out of her way just as easily. It wasn't a big deal, at least not to him. yvonne rae de snaijer

Grateful that the other person had heard her, Yvonne’s slight jog/run came to a slow stop and the flurry of her robes followed the actions. There she stood, barely above four feet and seven inches tall, eyes looking up at the boy who seemed to have a growth spurt. ”Oh thank god.” She briefly wheezed, her hands resting by the sides of her waist as she caught up with her breath. Bear in mind the De Snaijer had barely ran.
On the Saturday morning that Yvonne decided to go adventuring, she knew it was a day that would be filled with confusion and various other emotions. It was difficult for Yvonne to tackle things such as finally being in a wizarding school alongside her siblings – as it took her almost forever to adapt to her surroundings. The brunette was most picky and difficult even in her younger days as a baby. When the male stepped just a tad closer, Yvonne felt her feet press backwards, seeking her personal space. ”I…I…” She began to stammer, her voice never catching onto the last few words that racked her brain. But with confidence, she found herself saying:
”I’m looking for the…Thunder-dog Common Room?” With a pause, her lips pursed as she tried to figure out if that name was…even correct. ”I-I’m still new around here…I don’t know the rules and restrictions and I’m sure my sister does, but I have no clue where she is. Hence why I’m…Looking for her.” She stated, noticing she began to ramble half-way through.

The girl was running over to him and Jace stopped walking towards her, not wanting to accidentally run into her or something. She seemed overly relieved that he had stopped, but he didn't know why. He couldn't remember having ever seen this girl before. Did she really want to talk to him, or was she just looking for anyone that wasn't busy. He watched her, a small smile on his face as he waited for her to catch her breath, feeling just a bit awkward. It took a while for the girl to start speaking and when she did, she was stammering her words. Jace watched her, his expression turning a little concerned. Was she okay? Or was something wrong? After a moment, she got it out. She was looking for the ... ha! He couldn't help but chuckle a little as she botched his house's name. "I think you mean Thunderbird," he told her, emphasizing the last bit just a little. "And you happen to be in luck. I'm a Thunderbird, so I know where the common room is. You're not allowed in, but I can walk you to the entrance and then go in and see if your sister's in there. Is that all right?" The girl admitted that she was new, something that Jace knew without her needing to explain. She looked exactly the same way he felt last year, except he hadn't had an older sibling. He just had Brooke, his best friend. "If you want help with the rules and stuff, I can help you with that too," Jace said, starting to walk towards the common room and gesturing for her to walk with him. He was more than willing to help someone else, actually glad that he had the opportunity to do so today. yvonne rae de snaijer

A flush of red ran from Yvonne’s body, up to her neck and finally settling on her face out of sheer embarrassment. Thunder-dog? Where had that come from? But with his correction, Yvonne nodded, grateful that he corrected her, but the embarrassment struck her stomach painfully especially as she noticed him laugh. Mistakes were bound to happen as a first year, but not something as silly as Yvonne’s own words. ”Ah…” She began when he corrected her. ”I-I’m so sorry!” She added, stammering once more. ”But thank you, I appreciate it…” Why weren’t other students allowed in the common rooms? Surely they were able to mingle in general – right?
”If you wouldn’t mind…That would be great.” She muttered back to him, her fingers gripping against the oversized arms of her robes while the De Snaijer took his gesture, walking besides him. ”I-I’m Yvonne. Yvonne De Snaijer. But you can call me Vonnie…”

Jace rolled his eyes good-naturedly when the younger girl started to apologize. "It's no problem," he argued. He'd made tons of silly comments last year, he was sure. "I've said more ridiculous things, so no worries," he told her simply. He liked making new friends, but he didn't like it when they felt uncomfortable around him. Maybe if they talked while he took her where she wanted to go, he'd be able to help her. "Come on, this way," Jace told her, not bothering to add that he didn't mind. If he did mind, he wouldn't be offering to help her, but it was clear to him that the shy girl was feeling self-conscious. He smiled over at her while she introduced herself. "Nice to meet you Vonnie. I'm Jace Hunter." He extended a hand to shake with her. "So where are you from?" he asked, trying to make it so they weren't walking in awkward silence. yvonne rae de snaijer

By now, Yvonne was sure she was one of the stupidest people to exist. Magic had been around her, her entire life yet knowledge of studying in a Wizarding School was one thing she had no clue of. But one thing she was sure of, was the young Horned Serpent girl should’ve listened to her sister’s. To read on each of the houses information so she didn’t make silly mistakes like this one. But when the helpful elder Thunderbird laughed her problems away, she couldn’t help but try and force a smile – attempting to relieve herself.
”Y-You have?” She stammered, eyes widening in surprise and even excitement. ”Can’t be worse than Thunderdog.” She challenged, giggling as she pushed her brunette locks back. Nodding as he directed her around, she walked beside him, her lips pressing into a thin line as she remained quiet. Until he introduced himself of course. Jace was an uncommon name to hear – at least in Yvonne’s case, it was something she would’ve paired with a bad boy. But he seemed rather friendly regardless.
”Nice to meet you too…Jace.” When he questioned where she’s from, she gulped lightly, hoping to keep up the conversation as they walk. But she couldn’t help but wallow in her mind, scared of her words and the dumbness they brought around. ”I-Iowa! Davenport I believe.” The brunette responded. ”But at the moment I believe I’m from stupid-town…” She added, trailing off with a crack of a smile on her lips.

Jace rolled his eyes when the younger girl said that his mistakes couldn't have been worse than Thunderdog. "Sure they can! I mean ... nothing comes to mind right now, but all I need to do is ask my best friend Brooke. I'm sure she can come up with TONS of things I've said and done that are worse." Jace was confident of that. It wasn't that he was an idiot, but Jace could be quite impulsive. He said and did things the way he wanted. Sometimes it worked out, while other times it didn't. She answered that she was from Iowa and Jace nodded slowly. "I've never been to Iowa," he commented, "Do you want to tell me about it? I'm here from Alaska." Sure, he and his dad traveled all around and Jace had been to many of the states, but Iowa was not one of them. He smiled back when she finally smiled at him, but didn't comment about her being from stupid-town. He didn't want to say anything that could be taken the wrong way, so better to not say anything about it at all. yvonne rae de snaijer

Yvonne took notice of the eye roll but remained rather quiet, the thin line from her lips making a reappearance. But when the Thunderbird boy mentioned of his friend as well as the potential many silly things he had said himself, a smile drew across her lips as she tried to laugh it off alongside him. ”I suppose so” The brunette muttered. Being shy didn’t make Yvonne feel any better about her dumb choice of words, but she knew mistakes were to be made, especially in her first year.
Iowa to Yvonne was a place filled with comfort, but to others it was probably a boring place. Davenport was filled with just over a hundred-thousand people, but still the De Snaijer felt as if she knew everyone - not from talking to them, but from people she watched, looked at through the window like a peeping tom as they walked. Growing up as a pureblood, Yvonne spent the first eleven years of her life being home schooled until the day their letter arrived through the door - which meant she didn’t really talk to anyone aside from her sister’s. She definitely never spoke to Muggles.
”Alaska is definitely better than Iowa.” She commented while the two walked. ”Iowa’s just quiet…Nothing truly exciting about it.” The brunette responded truthfully. At least that’s how Yvonne felt anyway.

She said that she supposed he was right and Jace smiled. He wanted to find some way to help her relax, to calm down a little bit. The younger girl seemed tense, which he understood since she was having a hard time finding her sister, but he hated to see someone like that. "Hey, it's cool. Don't worry about mistakes. At least, not when you're with me. It's chill, all cool, okay?" he turned to look at her, offering an encouraging smile. He knew nothing about the girl's background, but some part of Jace really just wanted to see a smile. He laughed when she said that Alaska was better than Iowa. "Oh really? How long are your winters?" Jace asked, his tone making it sound as if his question was a competition. In a way, it kind of was. "And your summers?" He liked long summers, liked being warm. If he wanted that though, he and his dad had to go travelling. It wasn't entirely unheard of, but it didn't happen half as often as he wanted it to. "Well ... want to tell me about your most exciting moment there then?" he asked curiously, tipping his head to the side as he smiled over at her. yvonne rae de snaijer

Rolling back her shoulders to relieve some kind of stress, pink lips let out a soft sigh. She knew there were more things to stress out about rather than a silly simple mistake on one of the school’s Houses. So Yvonne tried to direct her stress to the happiness she would find eventually when she would reunite with her twin sister. Nodding up at the Thunderbird boy, the brunette somewhat forced a smile to match his own. ”O-Okay!” She found herself saying, chirping up at the fact that she would finally befriend someone that wouldn’t comment on her silly mistakes. Unlike her elder sister at least.
Laughing briefly, Yvonne’s hand hovered over her mouth as she did so, the sides of her eyes wrinkling while she pretty much snickered away. It was a habit for each of the De Snaijer girls to have such an odd laugh, but a worse habit was the hand action itself. ”Probably not as long as yours!” She responded, her hand moving to push some of her hair behind her ears. Though, she wished for a long winter. Yvonne always preferred the cold over the heat. Being able to bundle up in between sheets and sheets in bed rather than stripping the whole lot for a dreadful summer.
”Sometimes long. Sometimes short.” She told him. ”Our longest was actually this years. Muggles were everywhere. Parks, Ports, even shopping in the city.” She added. But her most exciting moment in Iowa itself? There wasn’t a particular one. Yvonne enjoyed her days alongside her sisters, especially since they kept her preoccupied for most times, while the De Snaijer parents disappeared for Auror jobs. Whatever they did. ”I guess when my older sister had to deal with a Muggle- we weren’t allowed to really socialise with them you see. It was quite funny to watch.”

Jace was glad when the younger girl agreed that she didn't have to worry when she was around him. He was glad for that. He hated it when people felt like they had to act all proper around him. That just wasn't the kind of person Jace was. He liked to have fun and for people to be comfortable around him. He felt like Yvonne could probably use a little bit of that in her life, considering how tense she seemed today. He grinned when she started to laugh. She was covering up her mouth with her hand, almost like she was trying to hide her smile. That was a little strange to Jace but he wasn't about to say anything about it. He wanted her to know that she didn't have to hide things with him, but maybe her coming to that sort of a realization would take time. he had a feeling that not pushing it would be a good idea. He grinned when she mentioned that her winters probably weren't as long as his. "You've got that right! At least I'm kind of used to it. Long sleeves and heavy pants most of the time for me," he commented with a wink, "Unless my dad and I go travelling. Almost everywhere is warmer than Alaska, so I like wearing shorts and light-weight things when I get the chance." He especially liked to freak people out and wear them when others considered it "cold." Yvonne started to talk then and Jace listened intently. He wanted her to know that when she spoke he would listen and the best way to show her that was by doing it. "I get that. Every year is different," he agreed, nodding to encourage her to answer his next question, which she did. He quirked his head to the side when she mentioned that she and her family weren't really allowed to socialize with no-maj's. "Are you not allowed to talk with them at all?" he asked. Growing up in the magical community in Alaska, he hadn't really had the chance to talk to a lot of no-maj's either, but it wasn't because he wasn't "allowed". That was interesting to him. yvonne rae de snaijer

It was difficult to grasp at change when your behaviour surrounded stubbornness as of lately. Being separated from her sisters were one thing she had always feared, considering she had been by Yvette’s side since birth and the two watched their elder sister from afar. Though now that the three were completely separated following the twin’s sorting ceremony, it drew a wedge in their relationship, one that hadn’t been exactly discussed but the awareness of it was there.
But being reminded of home couldn’t help but bring a smile to Yvonne’s lips. Home was where things somewhat returned to normal, and the elder twin didn’t feel as quiet and cruel as she slowly felt every minute she spent in Ilvermorny. She snapped at a poor girl just a few days ago for God’s sake. ”That’s the good thing about home…” She murmured, smiling at his wink. ”You’re used to the routines you face, whether its the weather…People…Things to do…” Her shoulder drew into a brief shrug as she trailed off, but her expression softened at the mention of Jace’s dad and how he preferred shorts. ”Even in freezing temperatures? Don’t tell me I’ll find you in shorts during Christmas here.” She remarked, a grin shy from appearing on her lips.
When Jace seemed to agree with her, Yvonne’s lips then parted at his next question. Her head cocked to the side as she thought about it, it was one of the rules within their household. The De Snaijer’s lived amongst No-Maj’s to ‘blend in’, as the two were known Aurors in the American Ministry. And to prevent any questions, the children were simply told to avoid them as a whole. ”Yeah…It was to prevent questions of the sort…I still don’t understand why we didn’t live closer to the magical neighbourhoods of Iowa.”

She was smiling as she talked about her home and Jace was glad he decided to keep the conversation on that. Anything to help the younger girl, Yvonne, feel more comfortable had to be a good thing, right? He nodded when she explained that home was comfortable because you got used to everything. "Yeah, that's definitely true," Jace agreed. Then she started asking about Jace wearing shorts and he laughed, "I don't know, maybe. Depends on how cold it gets here," he told her. Really, Jace didn't get cold often, so he wouldn't be surprised if she did see him in shorts, but she seemed so surprised by that that he wasn't going to say it was a for-sure thing. He frowned when she confirmed that they didn't no anything with No-Maj's. "I don't see them a lot either, but that's because I live in a magical community. Before we moved to Alaska, I saw quite a bit of them. There's nothing wrong about them," he commented with a shrug. "At least, nothing I noticed." That was the thing. Jace had been so young at the time, he wouldn't think anything was wrong with anyone else, even if there was. From what he'd noticed, No-Maj's were actually pretty similar to wizards. "I haven't done much with them lately," he admitted with another shrug. yvonne rae de snaijer

Even though Yvonne didn’t particularly do much in the first eleven years of her life, home was the one place she would never give up or replace. Like most people, home was where she felt the safest and the comfiest. It was just a slight inconvenience she would have to give it up for multiple terms in a year because of her education. How she wished to be home-schooled. ”Home is where the heart is.” She added with a small smile, quoting the one thing her parents would say often when they returned from their time away. Though the De Snaijer was sure it was a No-Maj reference. From his laugh, Yvonne could only seem to gather the potential joke in his next statement, her head shaking lightly as her smiled remained on her lips. ”You’re…Insane.” She laughed, holding her hand by her mouth as she did so. Habit.
”Though I’ve heard from my elder sister it’s not too bad here.” Considering it was Yvonne’s first year and the winter was slowly passing, she would see how it would be for their next winter — when Yvonne would be in her second year. Thin lips drew a sigh as she was lost for words. She didn’t particularly have a problem with No-Maj’s and hoped her parents were the same, but it didn’t make sense as to why they couldn’t just…Communicate with them. ”They seem nice.” She shrugged, her observations from afar. ”Neither have I, I supposed.” She added, increasing her pace a little so she would catch up by his side.
”Are the…Houses and their common rooms all far apart from one another?” She questioned, observing the area around her and simply saw a bunch of doors.
