[googlefont="Open Sans Condensed:300"] HOPE FOR SOME CHANGE [attr="class","next"] DECEMBER 24, 2024 Christmas was just a day away, and it still felt strange, this was the first Christmas that would lack her parents. Of course, she had thought both her sisters would return to their grandmother’s home for the holidays, but she was mistaken. Yvonne had left to stay at Hogwarts, leaving her and their elder sister at home with the old woman. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t the same either. Lila was a lovely woman and was sweet to her grandchildren, but she was hard on them as well. Probably harder on Yvonne because of what became of her after their parent’s death. She had allowed the girls to go to the winter festival at Hogwarts, and the young brunette was excited beyond belief. She had written to her sister, telling her that they would be in Hogsmeade on Christmas Eve and that she should join them, she never did hear back from the girl. That day, the two girls boarded a train to Hogsmeade, and she was giddy the entire time. “Do you think that Vonni will join us?” she questioned her elder sister as they sat across from each other on the train, leaving her to pick at her blouse. The girl shrugged but didn’t answer, leaving the brunette to sigh and look out the window in boredom. Luckily for her, the ride didn’t take long, and before she could even blink, they pulled into the station, and the two girls exited the train. Without even waiting for her elder sister, she took off running through the snow and into Hogsmeade, looking around in awe at the old and new stuff that laid before her. And then she saw it, an ice rink—without even waiting, she bound towards it, watching people skating from the sidelines.

Yvonne wasn’t a big fan of many holidays or special events, asides from Thanksgiving and her birthday. Luckily for the young De Snaijer, she spent her fourteenth with her parents – the last birthday she was able to spend with them but had no motivation to even return home this Christmas. And so she refused to. On the 21st, she refused to even leave her Slytherin dorm, knowing that most students would be returning home including her older sister and younger twin. She didn’t want to feel that guilt from looking at them as they would exit the grounds, heading for the train back to London. While Lila seemed to be a wonderful grandmother she was harsh on Yvonne, noting on the changes the elder twin had gone through and how her behaviour had hit the dumps. Which was perfect considering she just wanted…To be alone. By herself.
Though only a couple days into the winter break she remembered receiving an owl from Yvette, detailing how both herself and their elder sister would be going to the annual Hogsmeade Winter Festival on Christmas Eve. Aside from staying in her dorm room, common room and leaving to eat for the rest of the holidays, Yvonne had no intention to actually go to the festival itself, nor even respond to Yvette to let her know she wouldn’t be coming with. But she felt bad. So that’s how she found herself – with the permission of the professors who would be travelling with the students – at the festival.
She remembered from the Owl that her sisters wouldn’t be arriving until the early afternoon, so Yvonne took it into her own hands to explore around. But one thing caught her attention entirely as time passed. The Ice Rink. Back in America both Yvette and Yvonne loved to watch those skating on the ice rink and even tried it out themselves in their own Winter Festival’s. The elder De Snaijer would always say her twin was better than herself, but eventually she practiced enough to reach a better level. With the intention to skate herself and grabbing a pair of skates, along with another for her sister, the brunette turned, heading towards the stairs that led to the main section of the ice rink until a flow of brunette hair and small gloves caught her attention.
Instead of speaking, she walked past her twin a small smile on her lips as she turned in her direction, holding the skates up. ”Don’t take long putting them on.” She instructed, managing to put her own on with the help of magic. ”How did I know you would come here first?” The elder twin called out to her sister when the metal blades first touched the ice, allowing the Slytherin to glide closer to where her sister stood.

[googlefont="Open Sans Condensed:300"] HOPE FOR SOME CHANGE [attr="class","next"] Yvette found herself entranced with the skaters and the ice, watching as some moved with grace and others laughed as they almost fell. The brunette didn’t consider herself a skater; she enjoyed walking across the ice though and having the freedom of gliding across the frozen water. It was during her trance that she did not notice her twin coming towards her holding two pairs of skates, even though the two of them were twins, it always surprised her when they knew just where the other would be and what they were thinking about. ‘Don’t take long putting them on.’ Came the voice of her twin and she quickly took the skates with a smile on her face, sitting down on a bench and began to put the shoes on. She laughed, shrugging her shoulder at her sister’s question, “Guess you read my mind. Twin mind reading?” she said with a soft laugh, standing and moving towards the rink, grasping the side as she first stepped on. She began to slowly glide across the ice, sticking close to her sister who was doing the same.

Yvonne knew the kind of person Yvette was like, especially since the two of them were twins. Spitting image of one another, but even their personalities meshed in some aspect. Watching as Yvette took the skates from her hands, Yvonne took to the ice just a little further away. She glided slowly, trusting her feet to push her further, unlike the afraid beings who skated with minimal steps, to somehow prevent an early fall. But nervousness and hesitation always brought that. At Yvette’s question, the elder twin felt her own lips reflect her sisters, the corners turning upwards.
”If we had a twin mind reading thing, I’m sure I would’ve known everything that happened in school.” And her anger wouldn’t have become the best of her as she started the year in Hogwarts. With Yvette finally on the ice, Yvonne smiled down at her before reaching out for her hand, pulling her into her side as she increased her strides between each gliding stroke. ”This year, I’ll guarantee you don’t fall.” She laughed, looking away from her sister’s gaze. ”Maybe you can finally do some kind of twirl. Like mother could, like I can.”
Their mother had been an influence for many things they enjoyed and the muggle activity of ice-skating had captured the elder twin’s. Implementing magic was easy to such a thing like Ice skating, but magic couldn’t always be the apple on the tree, the temptation some people fell into and others, people would refuse. ”Unless you just want to keep your cool this time.” Ah memories from the last. Filled with chaos and playful teases.

[googlefont="Open Sans Condensed:300"] HOPE FOR SOME CHANGE [attr="class","next"] ‘If we had a twin mind reading thing, I’m sure I would’ve known everything that happened in school.’ Yvette thought about it for a second, and maybe she was right. “Selective twin mind reading then!” she said with a soft giggle just as she took the ice and her sister came over, grasping her hands and began guiding her. She had always been a little jealous of Yvonne and their mother’s skating abilities since she failed so much. Her mother used to joke that she was so much like her father, being that she couldn’t dance or skate – must run in the family. With the guiding strides of her sister, she didn’t even feel scared, nor did she shake with each movement as she would have on her own. She nodded her head as her sister said she guaranteed that she wouldn’t fall, even adding that she might finally be able to do a twirl as she and mother could. She smiled, “I hope so…” she breathed out.

MIND READING WOULD have been a great power to have back in Ilvermorny, or a curse. Yvonne’s natural habit for her attitude and behaviour to fall negatively had always been blamed on her own abandonment issues…Until she discovered…Maybe she enjoyed being a little bit mean. Yvette was always seen as kind and courageous, doing anything for her friends. Yvonne was…The opposite. Doing things for people had never benefitted her. Look at her parents. Her mother tried to save her father but he was already dead. And she ultimately died too. Emotions made people stupid. ”Selective mind-reading it is.” She settled, smiling as she skated with her sister, squeezing Yvette’s hands for comfort.
”Alright. I’m gonna let go, okay?” She asked and before she even got an answer, the Slytherin dropped her hands, instead resting them behind her back, clasping them together as she did so. Yvonne continued on, enjoying the noise that was made when metal collided against the ice, and with an abrupt turn she slowly skated backwards, her eyes flickering backwards to make sure she didn’t bump into anyone. ”Skate to me!” She called out to her sister, and turned on her heel again. Ah. How she missed the feeling of the ice against her feet.
