Kaylee was grateful that neither she nor her siblings had been in Hogsmeade two days prior, especially as the news broke about what had happened to Azkaban. Hogsmeade was one of the few places that they could have gone outside of the castle—being that they had remained at Hogwarts for the winter break. Being that they were without their parents and because she was only newly seventeen, it was easier to stay at school, even though it had felt like missing out.
It wasn't until the morning of the thirtieth that Kaylee received an owl from her parents at breakfast. Her father had been asked to come to the Ministry in London to help with the investigation into what had happened with the Azkaban fiasco that they were only just beginning to process. It had been a while since he had worked as an Auror, and—at least as far as Kaylee knew—her dad had resigned himself to the fact that there wasn't much more that he could do with two prosthetic legs. He had been an excellent Auror for MACUSA in his day, though, and it seemed to have finally hit him that he could still be of service as long as he wasn't expected to physically chase after anyone. As long as he could conduct his work from an office, why not?
It seemed as though her mother must have taken over writing at that point; she and their two youngest brothers would be coming, too, she added. They had others at home who could watch their house so that they wouldn't have to sell it, and she could work with some plants that she had only ever read about. They would be back to having two incomes, hopefully, that way.
Kaylee kept reading. They would be there as soon as their documents were processed by the Ministry of Magic, which probably wouldn't be too long, given the urgency of the situation. They would let her know when they knew more, her mother wrote, so that they could hopefully meet up before she and her brother and sister had to go back to classes and studying non-stop. She would get to see her parents and her brothers for the first time in months.
It felt to the Slytherin as though Christmas had come again, and she couldn't wipe the smile from her face. She couldn't believe how lucky she was. In the midst of so much chaos, her parents and little brothers were coming. They were really coming. She could feel tears beginning to cloud her vision as she got up to find her brother and sister. They must have gotten letters, too.
