December 30 2024
Lee had just landed in England last night and found herself extremely jet lagged. However, she didn’t really have time to sleep and didn’t want to waste her time away by sleeping through the day. Plus, she knew she’d never adjust to the time change if she let her body win and sleep when it wanted to. So, she decided to push through and allowed one of her new coworkers, whom she had been in contact with since she was told she was being shipped to England, to take her out into the famous wizarding alley and show her around. She had a lot to get. She was just moving into a new flat in the city and didn’t have a lot. Thankfully, she had managed to get one that was already furnished and anything she needed she could buy now that she was here. But she needed just about everything. She had no supplies for work, all she had brought with her were her clothes and some books. And her clothes, coming from Southern California where it was always warm and sunny, weren’t going to cut it in England.
So she walked down the lane with the woman, who was extremely friendly and easy to talk to. While Lee was born in London, she didn’t remember anything of the city, her only memories of her 8 years in England were of her friend, whom she hadn’t seen since she moved. She wanted to reach out to him now that she was in town, but a small part of her was anxious that maybe they had changed too much, maybe they wouldn’t be as close now as they had been. They had continued their friendship over the mail since she moved, but, it had been so long, there were so many factors in play.

It was one of Rory's rare days off. It seemed like the last few days, with all the inmates escaping Azkaban, there had been many more attacks than usual. It made Rory's job more stressful and nerve-wracking than it normally was. He loved helping people, but he hated when people got attacked by others.
Either way, today he was trying to relax. His plan was to make his way to Diagon Alley to get a few things he needed and then spend the rest of the day at home. Then he wouldn't have to worry about anything and could really relax. He walked down the lane, not really looking around himself until he heard an American accent nearby. It really wasn't something totally out of the ordinary, with all the American students going to Hogwarts this year, many of their families had accompanied them. Still, he glanced over and then stared. Was that ... it couldn't be Alyra, could it? In Diagon Alley? He froze, unable to move even if he wanted to.

It didn’t take long for Lee to spot something out of the ordinary in the alley, a man who seemed to be just staring at her. She hadn’t meant to see him, and she nearly didn’t see him at all, but she reached around to scratch her shoulder and there he was. She looked back at him for a moment before she began to feel flutters in her stomach. Was that? It couldn’t be. As far as she knew her friend wasn’t a wizard, what would he be doing in the Alley? Of course, she hadn’t seen him in a while, but she had seen pictures that they had sent one another over the years, and he certainly looked like the pictures that accompanied his letters. She excused herself for a moment from her co-worker and walked over to him, noting that he seemed to be shocked by her sudden appearance, she didn’t blame him. She hadn’t told him she was coming to England. “Rory?” she asked, just to confirm that the guy was who she thought he was. “Well you never told me you were a wizard.” she teased.

Rory startled when the girl with the red hair noticed him. Crap. How long was he staring at her? The thing was, she looked just like Alyra. The red hair, the way she carried herself. Sure, he hadn't seen his best friend in years, but he'd seen pictures and he remembered how she used to walk around when they were younger. Why did this woman remind him of Alyra so much? He looked away, feeling entirely embarrassed that she caught him staring. He glanced back up after a second, surprised when he saw her approaching him. Did she recognize him? The closer she came, the more convinced he became that this was actually Alyra. He started smiling when she said his name, nodding almost immediately. "Alyra," he answered, chuckling as he shook his head a little. "You never told me you were in England ... or a witch." His tone wasn't exactly accusing, but it definitely was. How could she come to England and not tell him?

He nodded when she said his name and he echoed hers back in return. She couldn’t believe this was working out this way. She had so many plans to surprise him, but obviously the world had other plans. “No sorry I didn't tell you. I just got here last night. I was going to try to surprise you somehow…” she admitted. She didn’t know how she was going to try to surprise him, but she had the idea to ask about his job in a letter and try to surprise him at work or ask where he liked to get dinner or something and just show up there. Obviously that was going going to work out now. “It’s good to see you, Rory.” A smile rushed over her face and she threw her arms around his neck. It felt weird, but at the same time good to be hugging him again, it had been a lifetime ago, 20 years, since they saw one another in person.

She was apologizing for not having told him, but ROry was already shaking his head. The fact that Alyra was here, in England, and that she was a witch ... he couldn't keep himself from grinning. "Oh? What kind of a surprise were you planning?" Rory asked curiously. Part of him wished he could have seen what she would come up with, but then again this was cool too. He was just so happy to see her. He was about to just crush her in a hug when suddenly her arms were wrapped around his neck and Rory laughed as he hugged her back. "You too, Alyra. I know it's been ages, but I've missed you." He missed her more when they were children, but he still missed her now. He loved spending time with his best friend, until she'd left the country. He pulled away, looking at her happily, "You look way better in person than you did in your photos, though you always looked brilliant in those," Rory complimented. This entire situation felt surreal.

Lee blushed when he asked what kind of surprise that she was planning. She had no idea, but she shrugged anyway, “Something that involved my subtly stalking you until I found where you were and could surprise you in person. So kind of like this, except I wasn’t stalking you now.” she smirked. Regardless of how the meeting went down, at least it had happened and they were reunited now. “I missed you too.” she admitted with a little giggle. A part of her had never thought that she would see him again and they’d just stay occasional pen pals until they died. She never saw herself moving back to England. As he pulled away from the hug, he complimented her, saying that she looked great, better than her pictures even. She smiled, “Well aren’t you sweet?” was she blushing? That was weird. “You look pretty handsome yourself. The years have been good to you.” he had certainly aged well.

Rory laughed when Alyra started to explain her plan of stalking him and then trying to surprise him. "Well, I'm glad to hear that you haven't started to stalk me yet. Should I stay on my toes just in case you've decided you want to give it a try?" he teased. He couldn't help it! Rory was deliriously happy to be talking with his best friend face-to-face, grinning even wider when she said that she missed him as well. He noticed her blush at his compliment, but Rory didn't comment on it. "Not sweet. Honest," he corrected with a wry smile. Then he laughed, "Thanks. I'm glad someone thinks so." Especially that she thought so. He wanted her to think he was handsome. He'd had a crush on her for years, though he honestly thought nothing would come of it since they lived on different continents and he thought she was a muggle. All that was different now though. He was glad.

He teased her about staying on his toes in case she changed her mind and wanted to try stalking him. She laughed but wiggled her eyebrows a little bit. She shrugged, “Probably wouldn’t hurt.” she teased. Of course she had no plans to stalk him any beyond the idea of a surprise for him, but it was too late for that now. However, she liked teasing him and she liked keeping people on their toes, even if he could probably tell that she was kidding. He then insisted that he wasn’t sweet, but was just honest. However, he still seemed fairly sweet to her. Not many strangers would tell someone that they looked good when they first met. But she figured they weren’t strangers, were they? Even if they hadn’t seen one another in over 20 years. They certainly had grown up. Both of them. Even though she had seen pictures of him over the years, in her head he was still the dorky little boy. He certainly wasn’t anymore. He was actually kind of cute. “Well now that I’m here maybe we can make plans to catch up or something.” she decided.

This was so nice! It was amazing how natural it felt for Rory and Alyra to tease one another, even after having been apart for so many years. Maybe it was the fact that they’d stayed in contact writing so long, or maybe they just always got along like this from the beginning. He laughed as she teased him, confident that even if she did decide to stalk him, she would see anything that was a surprise. “We should! Are you busy now … or maybe tonight or tomorrow night we could do dinner or something?” Why did it feel like he was setting up a date? He was just wanting to catch up with his best friend, but … at the same time he couldn’t help but notice how the light shone off of her beautiful red hair and how her freckles made her look even prettier to him. He suddenly felt a little nervous, but that wouldn’t help anything.

Rory asked if she was busy now and she glanced over her shoulder back to the woman who was showing her around. She didn’t want to just ditch her co-worker. But she really wanted to spend some more time with her old friend. She wanted to get to know him again. She loved the feelings that she was getting right now being so close to him. She had loved talking to him throughout the years, but nothing compared to this moment with him. Now that they were grown up and somehow had still kept the same connection they had as kids. “Sorry I’m here with someone from work.” she admitted, nodding over to the woman, patiently waiting by a shop. “I’m pretty busy today, but I only work until noon tomorrow, so yeah, dinner sounds good. Tomorrow then?” she asked, desperate to make a plan with him. A small smirk came upon her face as she realized that tomorrow was New Years Eve. How convenient.

Rory could almost sense the answer she was going to give before she said it out loud. It was pretty obvious when she turned to look at someone behind her. He could only hope that it wasn't another guy. Wait. Why was he hoping that she wasn't here with a guy? It wasn't like Rory had any sort of claim on her or anything. He should just be happy for her. He nodded when she said she was here with someone from work. Alyra kept on looking back at whoever-it-was and Rory couldn't help the slight disappointment. However, he brightened up quickly enough when she suggested tomorrow. "That sounds good with me. I have no plans tomorrow." Luckily, and somewhat miraculously, he'd been given two days off this week, and they just happened to be today and tomorrow. He could do whatever he wanted with his time. "We should meet at the park in front of the castle," he suggested. He glanced behind her, but couldn't figure out who her business partner was. "I should let you go back to work ... but I'll see you tomorrow." He smiled, starting to feel a bit excited for the next day. --- the end --- @alyra
