Jack hadn’t asked anyone to the Valentine's day ball, but he had people who he wanted to keep his eye out for. He saw one of them enter the Great Hall, on her own, and he smirked as he made his way over to the brunette woman. Ana. She was one of the first people who he met when the school year started and also one of the first people who stuck. At this point, Jack knew a lot of people, but there were still only a few Hogwarts students that he considered himself to actually be friends with, Ana was certainly close to the top. “Hey there little lady.” he said, his southern accent still as strong as ever. He was glad that he wasn’t starting to lose it after being around the sea of English accents for the last few months. Despite the mask, he knew it was her. Her eyes still shined through and he was sure he would recognize those anywhere. “You’re not here alone are you?” he smirked.

GILDEROY THREW THE BEST VALENTINE BALLS, there was no doubt about that. Ana had attended religiously. And not even just because they were friends. They were actually good. Ana put in a little extra effort. Her hair, which was usually tangled from flying and her lack of attention, had been curled and arranged in some up-do. She had not done it herself, rather she had roped another Hufflepuff in to helping her. She was even wearing a dress, the collar tugged and flattened every time she remembered it was there.
Peering across the dance floor, Ana nursed a cup of foamy pink punch and searched for a familiar face. There were a few, but none she would dare ask to dance just yet. It was a Valentine's ball. The floor was inundated with couples. Maybe, just maybe, Ana was looking for somebody. Jack had saved her life, and she'd meant to ask him out again as a thank you, but she hadn't had the time. The holidays had flown past and suddenly it was February.
Suddenly, a voice called from beside her and she turned eagerly. Her face split in a grin, healed from the burns and scrapes she'd earned. And he appeared to be faring well, too. His pristine appearance as brawny and tall as she remembered. "Hey!" She said cheerily, folding him in to a quick hug, her cup held out and away from them to avoid spilling. She leaned back, her nose wrinkling slightly as he teased her. "Well, not any more." She said, tutting as she set her cup down on a floating tray as it passed over their heads.
"Now," She said, rising up on her tip toes and folding her hands behind her back. "Are you going to ask me to dance, or am I going to have to do that myself, as well?" She quirked her brows challengingly, pursing her lips to stave off the smile that was permanently etched upon her face.

When she saw him, a grin crawled across her face and she pulled him into a hug. He wasn’t exactly expecting this type of reaction but he wasn’t upset for getting it. Ana was the best person he had met at Hogwarts and he was glad to be able to spend some more time with her tonight, that was, if she wasn’t here with another guy. And she was such a catch that he was sure that someone had already asked her. But when she said that she wasn’t alone anymore when he came up to her, he took it that she was free. She then set her drink down and asked if he was going to ask her to dance or if she was going to have to. He scoffed, rolled his eyes, and extended his hand to her, “would you like to dance?” He asked with a smirk.

ANA COULDN'T HELP HER BRASH EXCITEMENT AT seeing Jack at the party. The last time she'd really had a chance to speak to him was when they'd met at Hogsmeade. When the dragons had attacked and he had saved her life. She'd thought about him often after that, fondly and with a certain wanting. Perhaps it was because he had done something for her no other potential crush ever had. Or, it was just the residual adrenaline from a near death experience. But, he was as sweet as she remembered. Which she didn't mind at all.
Pulling her hand out from behind her back, Ana couldn't help her triumphant smile on her face, rocking on the tips of her toes as she laid her hand in his. "Why, I thought you'd never ask." She drawled, that sleek smirk on her face as she got exactly what she wanted. Jack was was a Southern smooth-talker, and Ana had no doubt she had her work cut out for her. But, she'd never shied away from a little verbal competition. Her hand went to his shoulder, where she rolled his collar between her thumb and forefinger, straightening it absently.
"So..." She asked as the tinkling music began overhead, the beginning of a new song. "Been saving lots of maidens in distress lately?" She asked with a slight wrinkle in her nose. It was easy to make fun of what had happened in retrospect, but at the time it hadn't been very funny at all. "I'm not keeping you from saving any lives, right?" Her shoulder lifted and she ran her hand over his shoulder before settling it. "Because I'm afraid I can't spare you now."

Ana reared her arm on his shoulder and played with his collar. He had a hard time not letting his eyes close at the feel of it. There was something so comforting and attractive about being touched on his shoulders, his hair, or his neck. That was how Mazie drove him to the point of kissing her back in January. He hadn’t ever realized he had that soft spot until this year. “you look amazing.” he told her when they started dancing. He meant it. There was a reason he had approached her in the candy store last fall. Jack laughed a little when she asked if had been saving of any other damsels in distress lately and then apologized for taking his time away from anyone who needs saving. “someone else can be the hero for a while. I’m a little busy here.” he moved his hand down to her waist.

ANA DIDN'T USUALLY CARE ABOUT THE WAY SHE dressed, or the sleekness of her hair. She was most comfortable in a braid and some shorts, but hearing that she looked 'amazing' had her mouth pulling in to a soft, almost bashful smile. How could she resist such a compliment, her hands slid around his neck and settled there. He was quite a bit taller than her, she'd realised that in Hogsmeade. "You're looking pretty dapper yourself." She replied, turning her face away slightly before she looked up at him through her lashes.
As they swayed to the music, Ana reminded herself that this is what she's good at. She's killer on a broom, and she can charm the socks off any opponent. That's why she'd always had a soft spot for Gilderoy Lockhart. They had 'the gift of the gab'. But, ever since Jack had saved her from a dragon in Hogsmeade, Ana had felt somewhat off balance. She owed him more than she could ever give back.
A shiver danced fingers up her spine as Jack's hand settled at her waist. She leaned towards him, snorting softly at his easy, confident reply. "You make me feel so special," She teased, tilting her chin up as she tried to stop herself from smiling too much. She tried and failed to play it cool. Swallowing roughly, she gnawed on the inside of her lip and spoke again. "So, are we making you feel welcome?" She asked, as if echoing their first conversation at the sweet shoppe. "Maybe we can convince you to never go back home." Her brows lifted daringly and she let her finger curl brush a curl of dark hair at the nape of his neck.

Jack didn’t reply to Anas comment about him looking nice, instead he just gave a little wiggle of his eyebrows and focused on the dance with her. As his hands found her waist, her arms wrapped loosely around his neck and she spoke about him making her feel special. He could hardly believe how incredibly Ana was. She was so funny and she challenged him. “I feel very welcome here. he agreed. Letting his eyes flutter closed for a second when she started playing with his hair. The same way Mazie and before he kissed her in the room of requirement. He hasn’t meant to kiss her. It had just happened. And now he was starting to feel that urge come on him again. Since when did he have any weaknesses at all? “aren’t as many uses for a cowboy in England.” He teased. As much as he was enjoying his time here, he missed his farm and his horses and his trees that he had been growing his whole life.

WITH HIS SOFT SOUTHERN DRAWL AND HIS BIG doe-eyes, Ana couldn't help the little thrum that began in her chest. She'd felt it before, a fair few times, but always with someone a little more special each time. Ana loved love, she loved to flirt and date. But, Jack had saved her life, she felt incredibly indebted to him. Ana had had flings before, but nobody had ever done something like that for her. She felt incredibly fond. Maybe it was the punch... She averted her gaze nervously.
"I'm sure we could find something for you do," Ana joked, but her smile was soft when she looked back at him. His face slackening as she ran her nails lightly against the back of his neck, his hair softly entwined between her fingers. "You could wrangle gnomes or Hebridean Black dragons." Ana was only half-way joking, her eyes wide and open as she added. "I think I'd miss you." She admitted, her nostrils flaring as she laughed softly, dipping her chin to rest against his chest momentarily. "Who's going to watch my back when you go?"

She ran her nails around the base of his neck and his eyes closed briefly but he tried his best to stay present in the moment. She was being so sweet and flirty and it wasn’t lost on him. He wasn’t sure how it could be, she was being fairly obvious about it. He couldn’t say he wasn’t happy about that, he had been fairly obvious about his flirting the first time they had met in the candy store. Neither of them were very subtle people so it worked well that they had found one another. “I don’t think my training on a tree farm translates well to dragon rangeling.” he smirked. She asked who would watch her back when he left and he shrugged. “maybe you should just come to America. Try my school out for a year.” though he wouldn’t be there since this was his last year anyway.

PRETENDING TO THINK ABOUT IT, ANA PURSED her lips and wrinkled her nose. "I think you're wrong," She told him easily, without much weight to her words at all. It was an easy back and forth, no strings attached. On that dancefloor, Ana felt like she could do or say just about anything without repercussions. The music just loud enough, standing together just close enough that they might as well have been alone. "It gave you guts." She squared her chin at that, nodding along with herself - the only person whose opinion truly mattered to her on the subject.
The mere suggestion of Ana going to America thrilled her. Not because it would actually happen, most likely not, but more because he'd offered. And that was an invitation in itself. "Maybe I will," She flirted easily. "You can show me all your favourite trees to farm," She laughed, lifting her brows expectantly. Her hands were still in his hair and they moved with a casual familiarity. Not once did he stand on her toes, or did she bump his knees. It was nice, really nice. After a moment of deliberation she wrapped her arm more firmly around his neck and looked up at him soberly. "Are you gonna kiss me or what?" She asked, because quite frankly, if he didn't, she was just going to do it herself.

She said that he was wrong about farming not translating well to dragon wrangling because it gave him guts and he wanted to roll his eyes. “I already had guts, thank you very much.” He winked instead. But he understood what she was saying. It was a different experience and he had done well in it. He had taken Dueling lessons before and he was alright with his hand. He wouldn’t say he was anything to write home about, or a wizard to watch out for, but he could use it well and he knew the correct techniques.
She seemed intrigued by his idea for her to come and visit his school. She said he could show her all the trees he farmed. He wanted to break down and explain to her the complexities of tree farming and that he didn’t farm the trees at the school. But he figured now wasn’t a great time to get into it, plus, he knew that she was just teasing and didn’t really care. He was just so passionate about it that thinking about it in an incorrect way almost started to bug him. However, he found himself completely distracted by her next question even more. “I was gettin’ to that…” he felt his cheeks go a bit pink but that was the least of his worries. Her arms wrapped tighter around his neck and he drew her closer to him by her waist until she was pressed fully up against him. This was nothing new to him, he had always been a flirt. But could say he had never been with someone who was so open to flirting back - and who was confident enough to make a comment like hers. He leaned his head down and pressed his lips to her.

"MORE GUTS THEN," ANA COUNTERED stubbornly, her face warming as he winked at her. He was charming, but she already knew that. And confident in his abilities, or maybe that was just for show. But, she didn't take him for the 'show off' type. And Ana knew a show off when she saw him, after all it was a staple of her personality. And though Ana's acceptance of Jack's through away offer was sincere, she saw him hold back a little. The way his lips went thin, as if he was trying not to say something, but she didn't comment on it. It was too nice standing this close to him, she didn't want to ruin it.
After a brief flirtation, Ana got what she actually wanted. His lips fell upon hers confidently, and she reached up, wrapping both of her arms around his neck as they pressed against one and other fully, neither pretending to dance any more. His lips were softer than she'd thought, she'd imagined they'd be a little dry from the outdoors. And he kissed her as surely as he flirted, which was quite unlike Ana's usual conquests, where she was often forced to take charge. Her heart raced as for a moment she lost all control, the dance floor fell away as well as any competitive expectations. She simply kissed him back because she wanted to.
