Mazie was so excited for the Valentine's Day dance. For the first time ever, she actually had plans for tonight. For about a month, she hoped something would happen between her and her best friend, Jack Hatfield. They'd kissed the night she returned and she expected something to come of it, but nothing had. They spent quite a bit of their time together during the past month, helping Mazie confirm the fact that she had feelings for her best friend, but he never said a thing. Though, the was he acted around her ... Mazie was almost certain that he liked her back. So tonight she was going to do something about it. She was going to dance with Jack, flirt with him like normal, and she'd somehow tell him how she felt. Mazie wasn't one to plan a speech or anything, but she knew the basics and she couldn't be more excited.
She put more effort into her appearance than she normally did, curling her hair into nice beach waves and using a bit more makeup than normal. Her dress was more like a light summer dress, going almost to her knees with small spaghetti straps and tiny black and white stripes that almost made the dress look grey. She thought it was pretty and was excited to wear it. She'd even decorated her mask to match, figuring that could be a cool thing.
She walked into the great hall, smiling as she looked around. The place was definitely well-decorated. This Gilderoy guy didn't go halfway, did he? Almost immediately upon entering, Mazie started scanning the crowd for Jack. He was the kind of person that was always on time to things. He should be here already. She saw him and a delighted smile covered her face. He was even walking in her direction; he must have recognized her too!
He'd almost reached her when he spoke and Mazie opened her mouth to answer him, but the girl almost directly in front of her spoke first and it only took a moment for Mazie to realize that Jack wasn't talking to her. He hadn't seen her. It took her less than half a second to realize that and deflate entirely, her smile disappearing in an instant. She listened as the two of them flirted a bit before she turned away, stepping back to the door of the entrance hall and taking deep breaths as she tried to rationalize what she just saw
This dance was not going the way she planned, but at least now she could understand why Jack never asked her out after their kiss. He had his eyes set on someone else. The disappointment filled her, but Mazie pushed it away. She came to this party wanting to have fun, and fun she would have. She didn't have to dance with Jack. She didn't even have to look at him during this dance. She'd likely see him tomorrow and they'd both act like they always had. Eventually he'd tell her he was interested in dating some brunette and Mazie would congratulate him. At least she hadn't ruined their friendship.
She set off to find someone else to have a good time with. Surely not everyone came here with someone. She'd be able to have some fun.
