Most of the other students at Hogwarts seemed to have gone into Hogsmeade for the sake of attending some engagement party that two of the older students were having. Although she technically had been invited, Chrissy didn't really know the couple, nor did she have dress robes suitable for attending something like that. She still didn't know a lot of people at Hogwarts very well, and having to jump back into the schoolwork that she had missed when she was supposed to have been tutored over the fall semester had meant that she hadn't had a chance to. She wasn't a social butterfly, anyway. Even the students who didn't know her past seemed to stare at her and silently judge her, and Chrissy was beginning to miss California all the more.
With so many people in nice outfits on their way to a place called Madam Puddifoot's, Chrissy still had most of the village available to her. She didn't know her way around Hogsmeade all that well, but she went directly towards the Three Broomsticks, her one respite from the cold. Hoping to find someone else from Ilvermorny who she knew well enough that she wouldn't be completely alone there, she braced herself as a gust of wind chilled her.
Hearing what sounded like someone knocking repeatedly at a door, Chrissy paused and looked around. It wasn't footsteps, though she could hear those occasionally, too. It didn't seem to be coming from any of the nearby businesses, either. She thought that that was odd; not least because it sounded like someone pounding on a door, but also because nobody else seemed to hear it. Was she hearing things?
Chrissy kept walking, trying to forget about it. It was probably nothing, she told herself; it was just her nerves about being in a place that was still so unknown to her. Yet the noise continued, and Chrissy realized that she was walking closer to the source instead of away from it.
Some sort of crate had fallen on the ground, it looked like, and there was clearly something underneath it. Not knowing what it was but sensing that whatever it was had gotten trapped under there, Chrissy pulled out her wand from what seemed like a safe distance.
"Wingardium Leviosa!" Her arm shook as she held her wand out, lifting the crate up, and she could feel her heart pounding inside of her chest. At first, there seemed to be nothing there, until two shadowy figures—both of them unmistakably human—seemed to crawl up from where the crate had sat.
As quickly as she could, Chrissy moved backwards, away from whatever—whomever—she had just let free. Still, even as she moved back, the figures came moving towards her, their appearances becoming clearer. They were faces she hadn't seen in years, ones that she had never wanted to see again after they were supposed to be in prison back in the United States.
"Stupefy!" Chrissy kept glancing backwards, trying to avoid tripping over anything. She had to get away somehow, but she didn't know where to run. What was she supposed to do to buy herself time to get back to safety? Her mind went blank, and her legs already felt ready to collapse. "Help!" she called out, hoping that someone would be able to intervene. "Help me!"
