noel malorie hochberg
no-elle mal-o-ree hawk-bear-g
age and birthday:
December 25th 2007
gender and pronouns:
13 inches, dragon heart string, Laurel
Noel has always had a very sassy look to her. She's has naturally very dark hair and eyes and always seems to have a smart-ass spark in her gaze. She prefers dark, and sometimes heavy make-up, big jewlery, and fashionable clothes though not designer. She just looks like that girl that's trouble and would gouge your eyes out if you so much as look at her wrong.
She does have to wear prescription lenses though she prefers to wear contacts mostly, and rarely wears her glasses around anyone but close friends.
education and jobs
working (she likes to stay busy)
learning new spells that can be used in a daily basis
cigarettes (even though she's underage)
alcohol (again.. underage)
lectures with no practical practice time
people doing things for her (even gifts)
Noel wants to get as far away from her current life as possible and climb to societal ladder through hard work/break the poverty cycle.
She'll never admit it, but Noel desperately wants to meet her biological grandparents.
the ocean breeze, mens cologne, and cigarette smoke.
failing a class - She thinks that she'll screw up her future if she fails any classes.
her current step dad - Noel has a very, very bad feeling about her mom's current beau and she doesn't trust him being being around her sisters.
Noel has had a rough life, and it shows in her personality. She's a fierce and independent girl who isn't afraid to do whatever it takes to reach her goals.
Because of her upbringing she relies only on herself. She's had to work each summer break to try and earn enough money for her school supplies. This has given her an extremely strong work ethic, and is a hard worker. While her attitude may suck she will never complain when it comes to doing a hard or less desirable job. This translates very well to her school life as well. She might not be the smartest person (otherwise she'd be a Ravenclaw) but she has the drive and determination to make up for it in sheer force of will. She refuses to give up on anything she's trying to learn and she will work her ass off on every school assignment given to her. Thus, she does extremely well in school. Unfortunately this characteristic is double edged. She's so independent that she struggles to accept assistance in anyway. Even from a teacher. She's the sort of person that will never ask for help, no matter how hard something may be or how desperate she needs it. Even gifts can be challenging to her because she sees them as 'hand outs'. The last thing she wants is for anyone to think that she needs help in any way.
Noel can be extremely short tempered, and is also absurdly jealous. When something is hers, it's hers and she almost gets territorial about it. This translates hard core to her friends, or significant others. If the person she is dating even talks to someone she finds attractive that green eyed monster will rear it's head, no matter how hard she tries to stop it. Of course, it doesn't help that she has a very hard time controlling her temper. This, of course, also stems from her upbringing. Her mother was extremely neglectful so the only way she really could get attention was by lashing out. Plus, her older siblings weren't exactly the gentle type, so it was very much a survival of the fittest childhood. Getting angry and retaliating was natural and expected of her. Now a days, this still plays a role in her daily life as her fits of rage are just as wild and uncontrollable as ever. Piss her off, and she'll hex you in a heart beat and not even care about the consequences.
She has never been the sort to follow the rules. But, before Ilvermorny she never really had any rules. The only rule she lived by up until she was eleven was that the strong survived and the weak didn't. Several of her siblings (obviously) have gotten into some very bad things over the years with this logic and she's gotten in trouble numerous times. To the point where the police in her home town recognize her family (never a good thing). If it weren't for Ilvermorny the girl probably would have ended up just like her older siblings.
Noel can have a very sweet side when you get to know her. While she's loud and flamboyant she is very quiet about her home life and never talks about her family. Instead she cares deeply (too deeply) about the lives of her friends and is fiercely loyal to them. She'll remember anything you tell her, and never betray your trust. And if you hurt someone she cares about? You best watch your back. She'll protect those she loves with her life.
One last thing to always be wary of. Noel doesn't scare easily. But people have two reactions to fear. Fight, or flight. Noel heavily leans towards the fight reaction. So if you do mess with her... Don't expect her to ever back down.

Oh boy... Are you sure you want to know this? Well, don't say I didn't warn you!
Obviously, Noel's story starts with her mother. Abigail Dallin. Sweet girl from a rich family that grew up with all the luxuries you could ask for. She lived your typical American girl dream. At least until some random swim team jock she’d fancied got her pregnant senior year, and out came Trevor just before graduation. Abigail, being the rich brat she was expected the boy to marry her but he went off to college and never looked back. Ouch. So, Abigail was left to raise their boy on her own, and lived with her parents. She’d never had any ambitions outside of highschool, in part due to the unrealistic expectations her parents had implanted while she was growing up. So, with no drive to be self sufficient, she relied on her parents and their wealth. Unfortunately, while her parents instilled a sense of entitlement they did not manage to teach Abigail actions equal consequences, or to learn from her previous mistakes. So, after a night of one too many tequilas, and a stranger in a foreign city she found herself in the same predicament as her youth. Knocked up by a man that had no intention of staying. And so, came Zachary. After using her parents for so much already this second child was a final straw. They disowned the young woman and haven't had any contact with her since.
Now comes the fun part. On her own, she started a downward spiral of trying to figure out how to function without her parents money. Johnny Dallin entered the picture, and showered her with gifts. Thinking this meant he had plenty of money and could financially support her needs they eloped and she moved into his trailer home. Of course, once she took off the rose tinted glasses she realized how bad a situation this was but it was too late. Drugs, and violence became a pretty normal part of life at that point since Johnny dealt from their home. Cop raids became a part of everyday life, as did muggings, break ins, and gun violence when druggies couldn’t pay. A few months after Josiah was born Johnny finally went to prison for his drug crimes. Abigail got evicted with her three kids, and immediately moved on to Michael White. A much older man and basically her sugar daddy. That marriage didn't last long at all but at least Noel didn't get a sibling from it! Basically he was a creepy old man (so Noel is told by her brothers) that just liked younger women. He liked Abigail well enough but didn't care for the three kid thing, so peace out.
Joseph Hochberg came next. Abigail knew him from the Johnny days. Joseph had been a regular of Johnny’s business and so she knew he had (some) money. Give him some ‘sugar’ and he’d cough up the dough. Anyway! We're finally to Noel's father! Well, not really but we’ll get to that. Joseph was a dead beat but he stuck around the longest. They had their first girl, Marilyn together. And things were sort of going okay. He made ‘sort of’ good money, or at least enough to keep the growing family afloat. Meanwhile, Melvin Symons was Joseph's best friend and also Abigail's boss at the time. Abigail was basically working at the restaurant Melvin managed. Melvin was attractive and one thing lead to another. Abigail slept with her husband's best friend and had a bastard child, Noel, on Christmas day. Original name, right? Joseph was too stupid to notice that the second baby girl had his best friend's eyes though. Hey, no one ever said he was a smart guy. He married Abigail after all!
Unfortunately, Abigail really sucked at holding down a steady job and screwed things up at the restaurant. So, after a very public firing, Abigail lost contact with Noel’s biological father. Then when Noel was two Joseph just took off, not wanting to deal with these five children, despite (believing at least) having two daughters.
Over the next few years Abigail made ends meet through questionable means (illegal activities and loan sharks.), but at least the family managed to keep a roof over their heads. Noel, during these years, started to develop her behavioral problems. She threw dangerous tantrums and her first signs of magic began to manifest (though her family didn’t understand it at the time). Her explosive tantrums were often followed by glass shattering or doors slamming without being touched. Things breaking. As if each tantrum created a terrifying explosive force that affected the world around her. All her siblings, despite being older than her, were always wary of her. You never knew what bizarre thing might happen to you, or if you might get hurt. So, Noel was never close to her siblings, but why did she need them? THey were all dead beats like their dads
Finally daddy number four came around in the form of a younger man, Erik Johnson. He was pretty decent, actually. Noel liked him. For obvious reasons Noel had been mostly raised without much of a father figure and men were always coming in and out of her life. Her older brothers were running around in the wrong crowd constantly, and basically Noel learned early on to fend for herself. Her mother was not the most caring person (or really at all. She's an overly fertile slut, if you haven't figured that out.). Erik was good though. He knew how to calm her down when her temper got the better of her. Erik was the one step father she was closest too, especially because he never avoided her like the plague like her siblings. He actually cared about her and would spend time playing with her. He could have been a pretty great dad if it weren't for that armed robbery attempt of his. Her mom, stupid as always, had basically racked up a lot of debt over the years (from Loan sharks no less) and he had a mad idea to try and rob a bank to try and get enough money to fix the situation. So bye bye, Erik to prison! During their short lived marriaged though they had another child, Morticia.
Erik’s prison sentence only made Noel's behavior problems worse. It was absolutely terrifying when she was angry. She had a short fuse and would explode at the little of things. And so would the world around her. When she finally turned eleven someone came to that overcrowded apartment in Florida to talk to Abigail about how special Noel was. To be honest, Abigail was probably high when this whole thing went down but long story short was Noel was a witch and needed to go to a special school. For people like her to learn control of their powers. Hey, if it meant getting rid of Noel for most the year, Abigail was all for it! Noel had become a very serious problem! She was aggressive and didn't play well with others. So, Ilvermorny it was! Of course, Abigail never told her other children about it, just that Noel was going to a special school. They all assumed she was going to some juvenile detention center or youth rehabilitation program.
Ilvermorny... was an eye opener. Noel had spent her entire life without rules and getting away with anything. But not here. Here you had to learn discipline. You had to work hard. You had to actually aspire to something. Her first year was both the hardest and most amazing experience of her life and was the turning point in her life. Each year after only solidified what she was learning and how she was changing. She found herself actually wanting to do something with her life, to achieve more then her mother's pathetic existence, and to do better than her siblings. She wanted to break this cycle that she'd been born into. So, she worked at it. She grew, and she changed.
When she was home for summer breaks she worked her ass off to make enough money for the next school year, While her siblings were making terrible life choices, she was desperately clawing her way out of the pit she’d been born in. Noel was far from a model student in school. She did extremely well in her classes grade wise but her anger issues were still extremely problematic and her aggression was always a little out of control.
Sometime during these first few years of school her mother found another man and married him. Noel had always questioned her mother's choice in men but this guy was by far the worst, and young enough to be one of her own children (he was actually younger than the two oldest boys). He was a creep and Noel despised him with every fiber of her being. But she didn't have to deal with him often. Being at a boarding school meant she only really saw the guy during the summer break, and even then she was always working odd jobs so rarely even then. But it was through him that the latest child, Percy, was born.
Despite the nonsense going on in the UK her fourth and fifth year she didn't care. It wasn't happening in the US, and she had too much going on already. Especially fifth year since it was her OWLs year! She needed to get as many of those as possible if she was going to reach her ambitions!
With the vandalism at Ilvermorny Noel was afraid for the first time. Because what if there wasn't another schooling option for her? She'd fallen in love with the Magical world, she knew that was where she belonged. Would she have to go back to life with her insane mother, plethora of no good siblings, and dead beat step dads? The answer came shortly later. Hogwarts. But how? She barely earned enough each summer for her schooling. How would she pay for a trip to Hogwarts?
Noel had to work three jobs that summer. Work and sleep, that was her existence for those two months. But she made it work. She earned enough to pay for her trip and off to Hogwarts it was.
site events reaction:
Apparently some crazy shit was going on across the ocean in the UK her fourth year, but Noel didn't really pay it much mind. The Brits were always stirring up trouble. They'd had two Wizarding wars after all! She was of the mindset that she'd stay out of their business if they stayed out of hers, completely ignoring the fact that people like her (no-maj born witches and wizards) were being murdered.
Fifth year was likewise busy, only this time apparently there was some Tournament going on. She probably should have been paying attention, because she didn't even hear about the Durmstrang or Beauxbaton accidents until summer started and a friend mentioned the incidents in a letter.
The vandalism of Ilvermorny didn't go unnoticed, and threw a big wrench in Noel's plans. Since she had to earn her school money each summer she wasn't prepared to pay for a trip overseas. She was able to earn enough though to make the trip over to Hogwarts.
Old enough to know better, young enough not to care. (28)
