Lucas was 15 years old, and there were two things on his mind. Grils, and magical creatures. His last class of the day had been cut short today. Thank goodness. Transfiguration was not his best subject. His life had lined up so well, so that it made it a little harder to do it, especially on himself. It still wasn’t his fault. The mono toned old wizard insisted him to try something higher level than what he was able to perform. So what if there was an explosion. It wasn’t his fault.
His friends decided it would be best to work on their homework. Lucas was not in the mood. He left the school and walked around the grounds. He knew where he was going. Whenever he had a spare moment, Lucas was off to visit the care of magical creatures teacher. The professor was used to Lucas. The boy had spent his entire life in a care of magical creatures reserve. He knew about creatures that many seventh years wouldn’t even know existed. Lucas still insisted on taking the class, and wasn’t afraid to correct him when he was off about something. By the time he had reached where the class was, the professor was releasing his class full of fourth years to enjoy the rest of their day. “Next class, we will complete our discussion on thestrals.” He motioned to an empty space next to him.
As Lucas walked up, he couldn’t help but laugh. Not many people could see thestrals. It was no wonder that their teacher didn’t. ”Try the other side Professor” He casually walked up, his arms up in the air and his hands behind his neck. "And there's one behind you" He winked at a girl who was one year younger than him. He had seen her around, and she was pretty cute.

AT JUST FOURTEEN YEARS OLD, Flora Adamson didn’t know what she wanted. Perhaps she wanted a few friends here and there, ones to talk to, to vent to about her mother or to simply rely on. Perhaps she also wanted a better…form of self-confidence. Flora could barely speak up for herself for most things, to push past someone or even participate in classes. The day was going by pretty quickly, with core classes out of the way and the Adamson girl’s day ending on a natural mood once the Care of Magical Creatures professor let the students go. It was the only class Flora truly enjoyed from her interests in creatures, beasts and spirits alike. She listened in to the Professor’s final words, mentally noting to do some early readings on Thestrals before their next class.
Flora herself couldn’t see thestrals quite clearly, even though death was somewhat close knitted to her family anyway, or according to what her mother would say anyway. She heard the voice coming from a stranger, who even referred to where Flora had paused, standing nearby the Professor. Was he calling her a thestral? Surely he must of been stupid. ”Sorry Professor but is there any way I could obtain some reading material before our next class? Just on thestrals I suppose.” It was best to ignore the male who stood by the door, with his hands behind his neck and his robes…slightly lifting. Surely he must of been older than her.

Most of the class had gone by now. Lucas walked up to the professor and noticed that a girl had staid behind. He waited back a little bit as she asked the teacher about extra reading. "There's a small section on them in your textbook you baught for class, and there's another few books in the library. But" At this the teacher looked at Lucas, finally acknowledging one of his star students "If you wouldn't mind." Truning back to the girl "This is Lucas, I'm sure he could tell just as much as any book can." looked up at Lucas again with a smile.
The young boy gave an ear to ear grin and finally approached the group. He picked up a dead rat that the teacher was using to try to get some Thestrals to approach and held it in front of him, looking at seemingly nothing. He then guided the rat away from the girl and the professor and flattened his hand and started to stroke the air. "Yea, I could help" He then tossed half of a rat onto the ground and walked back to them, whipping something off of his hand and onto his nearly clean robes. "Books only tell you facts. It's so much better to interact with them" He shot a look at the teacher. The one who rarely let Lucas help. Even though Lucas was dealing with fairly dangerous creatures at home, no one seemed to trust him out here. True, the more dangerous, the more he had someone with him, but that was just common sense. "By the way, you can call me Luca. What's your name"

GAZING UP AT THE STUDENT the Professor had introduced, before flickering her attention back to the Professor, Flora stood with her lips thinned out. Thoroughly unimpressed by his presence, nor his approach to speak as if they were budding friends. With her Professor mentioning how she could refer to the small section in her textbook, she thought it was the perfect time to leave. But no, she just had to speak to another person today. ”Aren’t facts a good way of overseeing things? Proving that it’s real rather than having failed experiments?” She questioned, frowning at the male’s action of throwing the dead mouse to the ground.
At his name, Flora raised her brow. Should she even bother with this Luca guy? ”Adamson.” She responded. It wasn’t ideal to be referred to her last name but she doubted she would see this guy anytime soon.

Lucas loved magical creatures. To be honest, he just loved animals. He was right at home around magical creatures, and the professor knew it, but the girl didn't seem too convinced. ”Aren’t facts a good way of overseeing things? Proving that it’s real rather than having failed experiments?” she had said, leaving the boy wide eyed and dumbfounded. What did she just say? "True, a book can tell you the facts, but if you live your enitre life reading about facts, did you really live?" Lucas enjoyed reading up on magical creatures, but nothing beat the feeling of interacting with them. "A book can tell you how fast a billywig can fly, but do you really know what it's like to try to catch one?"
Lucas introduced himself to the girl and she gave him the name "Adamson." It was probably her last name. "Nice to meet you Lady Adamson" He said with a playful bow at her. He then stood up and gave a large smile.

CLASSES WERE MEANT FOR STUDENTS to learn the facts behind a theory, to prove something. Like statements that said something was true or false, they needed to be backed by evidence and proven to be true or false. That’s how Flora Adamson saw the scenario between her and Luca. She enjoyed the classes, learning from the textbooks and the Professors and didn’t really want to be disappointed if she tried to conduct an experiment of her own and significantly failed it. ”Learning and living are two different things and concepts. I wouldn’t waste my life reading about facts when I can go out and experience it. But thestrals are difficult to communicate with unless you’ve witnessed death, which I haven’t faced. Therefore I’d stick to the facts inside the textbooks.”
She hadn’t meant to come off as harsh with her words, but the differences between herself and the male before her were easy to pinpoint right away, and the two didn’t even know one another. He bowed before her, before standing with a smile. Unlike him, Flora wasn’t smiling, nor was she amused from his actions. She could say the same for the Professor but he seemed to be busy around his desk, before asking the two of them to sort their differences elsewhere from the class, since he had things to prepare. Flora took Professors words as the correct timing to leave, but Luca was somewhat in the way. ”Let’s…Go?”

School was meant for preparing the young to take on the world as successful adults. At least that is what he father told him. And his mother defiantly told him that he could probably skate on looks alone, but while he was there, it wasn't' a bad idea to learn things. Lucas took both parents advise, selectively. He did try to learn all he could, except with transfiguration. He had given up on that subject quite a long time ago. Magical Creatures class was defiantly something that Lucas didn't have to study too much. When the professor brought in new creatures that he had never seen before, that was when he really paid attention. His father had even told him that if Lucas could keep his grades up, he would take the boy to Africa on a trip to help study erumpents. This was not a thin that Lucas was going to be left out of.
This was about the time that the girl started to talk about her idea about the difference between learning and living. The teenage boy couldn't help but give a short chuckle. Wow, he defiantly had a different philosophies about school. There was nothing wrong with that. Just different. He understood that she was entitled to her own opinion, as long as she understood that he couldn't have his own. "You're not wrong. Thestrals are hard to observe if you cannot see them. But that doesn't mean you cant communicate. And you don't have to just study textbooks."
The professor then asked the two to figure things out else where. Classes were over for the day, but that didn't mean that a teachers work was done. "Ok" Was his response to her questioning if they should leave. "I know where there are more Thestrals. That is, if your not afraid to experience one." He smiled at her as he started to leave the class area.

WITH A MOTHER LIKE THE one Flora had, it didn’t matter where your passions lied and what you felt happy doing. All that mattered was graduating with high grades and marrying yourself off to a pureblood husband or wife — just to repeat the cycle of a pureblood family for generations and generations. While Flora was simply in her fourth year, her mother still had high expectations for her, and her frequent weekly disappearances proved so. Zara wanted her child to look after herself, so if push comes to shove and Flora’s potential…husband in the future, disappeared the same way the Adamson’s father did…She’d be prepared.
Flora felt herself shrug at the boy’s observation, finding relief now that they left the classroom. ”Is that not what we’re taught to do? Study textbooks during daily classes?” She questioned, looking up at him. He then brought up that he knew where they could find more Thestrals and while Flora knew she should have declined the request to experience it…She wanted to challenge herself. ”Is that a challenge?” She asked him. ”Let’s go.”

Lucas was raised in a hard working family, but also one that tended to treat him more like an adult when he was working, with obvious restrictuons. This meant, that he could do what he wanted and help where he wanted at home. He could still have fun as a kid, but he had to usually finish his chores around the reserve first. But even after he was done, he was more likely to stick around and help anyway.
Lucas could tell that he and this girl had very different ideas about school "It's what they want you to do, but were taught to live out in the world and perform the way we need to." He smiled at the girl. Knowing how to study text books was good, but you wouldn't be good at being a functioning member of society after that if all you could do was study books. He then told her about his knowledge of the Thestrals location, and she seemed to change. "You bet it is, Miss Bookworm." Lucas was used to girls liking him, just because he was half veela, but this girl didn't seem too interested in him. ”Let’s go.” the girl had said and Lucas nodded. "It's this way" He pointed to where it was known that magical creatures staid, and it was a section of the school grounds, that was farther from the actual school than anything else. Most students didn't go out there, unless they had to.
