june 23, 2023 Sander had woken up early that day; his family had been following the path of a unicorn herd and when they had made camp that night they were certain they were within a day's travel of the herd. Sander wanted to get a head start, but first he needed to figure out which direction the herd had set out in. They had made their camp a few hundred meters away from an outcropping, and that was where Sander headed. A bird's eye view was never a bad thing when tracking animals.
When he came to the edge of the outcropping, Sander nearly shouted in surprise - spread before him on the plains before was the herd he was seeking. He took a deep breath to calm himself. Sander knew enough about unicorns to know they spooked easily, especially around men. Finding a herd of this size wasn't typical, since the more animals that were gathered together the higher the chances they would be noticed, but Sander was glad he had found them. He had seen unicorns before, but never this many, and never wild. It all took his breath away.
He needed to get closer. The outcropping didn't have a clear way down, but Sander was excited enough that he didn't need a path. He lost his footing a few times as he made his way down towards the herd, and was sure that the sound of skittering rocks would send them running, but the unicorns stayed put. Sander was nearly shaking as he drew closer and closer to the herd, sure that any moment they would go running. They didn't, though, and soon Sander was standing within a meter of one of the animals. He swallowed hard. The animals were looking at him, but they weren't running away. This was weird.
Without thinking, Sander reached his hand out. He wasn't quite touching the unicorn closest to him, but his hand was in its line of sight, and it could choose to approach him, if it wanted. There was a moment where time seemed to stop, and then the unicorn took a step towards him. Its nose bumped against Sander's hand, and in a rush emotions that weren't his spiraled through him. There was curiosity about the... naked thing? A dash of fear, a sprinkle of excitement, and a whole host of other things he didn't understand. Sander withdrew his hand, but it was like once he had a taste of the emotions, he couldn't stop feeling them.
It didn't take a genius to figure out the emotions that weren't his were coming from the animals around him; they were the only other living things in close proximity. Sander couldn't believe he hadn't noticed it before, the buzz of feelings and thoughts that didn't belong to him. He had felt like this before, but never so clearly; he had always attributed it to his synesthesia, or just the different way he seemed to see the world from everyone else.
If he didn't focus, Sander was just aware there were feelings that weren't his. As soon as he did direct his mind to them, though, it was easier to pick out individual emotions and thoughts. It made his head hurt if he tried too long, but this was something Sander wanted to explore more in-depth. Later, though - right now he just wanted to bask in the feeling of belonging.
