Kinsey was excited, but at the same time trying not to be. Today was ... well it was her anniversary with Riley, leaving out all the terrible stuff in the middle where he was engaged to someone else and broke up with her. The thing was, she wasn't quite sure if he remembered. He had so much on his mind lately and was trying so hard to make sure he took care of everything, specifically her. After Priscilla's attack on the tower, Riley was much more serious in general. He didn't really smile often or play around. Kinsey knew (thanks to her abilities) that it mostly stemmed from a deep desire to keep her safe. Every time they touched she could feel that and she knew from their conversations how stressed he was about it. So, because of that, she hardly expected him to remember today. She'd just gotten out of Arithmancy and asked one of her friends (though they were more like an acquaintance to her) to walk with her to the pond. The girl nodded easily. After the attack on her, most people didn't seem to want to leave Kinsey alone, which was fine by her. She sat by the pond with the girl, making idle conversation while she waited for Riley to come. He would. This was where they met, almost always. She closed her eyes and smiled, sensing his intentions getting nearer. She could sense him much more easily now. Still, Kinsey waited for him to approach. @riley

Riley did his best to stay by Kinsey’s side, but aside from transferring into all of her classes with her (which the professors wouldn’t allow - he had tried), there wasn’t all that much that he could do while they were still in school. It made him feel so confined. He never felt free anymore. Going to Hogwarts used to mean freedom from his family and his responsibilities - he missed that feeling. He hated being here now. He despised it. He admired the staff for doing what they had done regarding Prissy and actually taking this seriously. But her being gone didn’t make him feel any safer or better about being here. Being here was what Kinsey wanted - he kept reminding himself of that. She was the only thing keeping him here anymore.
He knew where he could find Kinsey after her class was out - they didn’t plan to meet there, but he knew she was almost always there. It was where they met and where most of their important relationship events had occurred. So he made his own way there after his class let out and saw her already sitting there with another girl in their year that Riley couldn’t remember the name of. He had been so selfish lately he couldn’t be bothered with most other people anymore. He hated that he was becoming this way. He used to be so social. So friendly. So happy. Now he was a jerk. And he knew it.
“Hey Kins.” he said when he finally made it close to them. He was mostly expecting her friend to leave them now that he was here. He wasn’t much in the mood for an audience.

The girl beside her stopped talking after a second and glanced around, quickly spotting Riley. She smiled at Kinsey and said she'd see her later. Kinsey waved as the girl stood up and left, then turned her attention to Riley. His expression was serious, like it always was now. Part of her missed the times a year ago when he would walk up to her with a huge smile on his face, ready to show her something or tell her a story about something that happened. He didn't really do that much anymore, which Kinsey didn't blame him for. He'd been through a lot this last year. So had she. At least now they had one another. Kinsey smiled up at him, scooting over to make room for him. "Hey Riley. How were your classes today?" She reached for his hand, mostly just wanting contact with him. It was still almost surreal to her that she could touch him without getting into trouble. She could really be with him again. Finally. @riley

Kinsey’s friend left them alone and Riley took her spot next to Kinsey on the bench where they had first met. It was kind of their spot and Riley loved being there with her. Especially given what this day meant for them. She asked him how his classes were, and he shrugged. “They were fine. Nothing particularly interesting.” he admitted. It was true, there was a lot more on his mind than classes anymore. But he still tried to stay in the moment and finish his education, mostly since Kinsey was stressing so much that she wanted them both to graduate. He didn’t want to upset her. “how were yours? Learn anything interesting?” they were taking different classes and he didn’t necessarily appreciate all of her subjects as much as she did, but he admired that she liked them.

Kinsey wasn't really surprised that Riley wasn't interested by his class. Not many things captured his interest now-a-days, except for her. It was flattering, and also a little worrying. She wanted to make sure he was okay, but at the same time Kinsey wasn't sure how she was supposed to do that. So she was trying to figure it out as she went along. Really right now she was just trying to make sure that Riley knew she was there for him. She smiled when he asked about her classes. Despite the fact that she knew Riley didn't want to be here and the fact that being in school still made her nervous, she still liked her classes. "They were really good. We started learning new concepts in both classes and I'm actually really excited about both of them." Not that she wanted to get into that now. She'd rather enjoy her time with Riley. "But I'm sure you don't want to hear all about that." Kinsey leaned her head onto his shoulder. "I missed you. Is that weird? That it's only been a few hours and I still missed you?"

Kinsey started to say that she had enjoyed her classes and was excited about the new concepts that they were learning and it made Riley happy to see her so excited over something, anything. But especially over something academic. Academics had always been a passion that the two of them shared. They were both interested in school and wanted to learn, both within their classes and outside of them. But then she insisted that he probably didn’t want to hear about all of that and switched topics. “I want to hear about anything and everything that interests you.” he promised. Even if it was a subject that he didn’t care for, he wanted Kinsey to be able to talk to him about her passions.
She then admitted that she had missed him even though it had only been a few hours and he nodded. “I get it. I missed you too.” he sighed. “it’s going to be hard once we graduate and we have to spend most of the day apart at our jobs…” he was going to be training as a healer and he knew that would be extremely time consuming.

Kinsey smiled when Riley insisted that he wanted to know about everything that interested her. She reached over to take his hand, squeezing it as she felt herself relax. Physical contact with him was always calming to her. Soothing, really. Even when Riley was upset, his intentions were almost always the same. Protect her, care for her, love her. She loved him for it. "Alright, I'll tell you a little about it," she agreed before going into a short explanation of the class and what they'd been discussing today. It was interesting, definitely part of the reason why she took that class. She nodded when he mentioned that it would be harder when they had to be apart because of their jobs. "Well, we can deal with that when it comes. For now," Kinsey squeezed his hand again, smiling over at him, "I think we should just focus on enjoying the time we do have together." At least, it was what she wanted to do. She knew he loved her, but she'd rather live in the moment and enjoy it than think about how she wouldn't have it for much longer. "Do you want to go on a walk or something?" she asked. @riley

She spoke of her class and the sorts of things that they were discussing today, and while he really wasn’t all that interested, he did enjoy listening to her talk about the things that she loved and was passionate about. He was sure that she wasn’t as into psychology as he was, but she never asked him to stop talking about his passions. And he didn’t want to either. He knew that he hadn’t been the best person as far as Kinsey was involved for most of this year, and he wanted to fix that to the best of his ability. He wanted to be the type of guy that deserved a girl like her, and he never wanted to be the stuck-up pureblood again.
As far as his comment about not being able to see each other as much once they graduated, she said that they could deal with that when the time came. He nodded. That was a very Kinsey answer. Riley was a planner, he liked to have some idea of what the future held. Right now, his future was blank. He had no money, he had a job prospect with the hospital, but he knew connections to his old life would roam those halls. He just hoped to be able to make a name and a future for himself outside of the Fudge name he still carried.
But Kinsey was always positive. Even when positivity was the last thing that Riley was feeling. “Yeah, a walk sounds nice. It’s pretty out today.” Spring had sprung, and it was nice to be out in the breeze. It was still a bit chilly, as Scotland typically was, even in the spring and summer months, but it was beautiful and the sun was shining down. He stood up and offered her his arm.

Kinsey smiled when Riley agreed to go on a walk. She wasn't sure if he remembered that today was the day they'd actually started dating a year ago, but she didn't care. She just wanted to spend the day with him. Going on a walk was a very nice way to do that. Kinsey stood up and took his arm, smiling up at him as they began to walk. Then again, telling him that today was their anniversary might be a fun way to get the conversation going. "So ... today is actually a pretty special day for me," she told him, smiling sweetly up at him. "You have any idea why?" If he didn't, that was fine. She could tell him, and then they'd continue on enjoying the rest of their day together. @riley

As they walked Kinsey mentioned that it was a special day for her and asked him if he had any ideas why. Riley smirked, he remembered what today was. Or at least, what today had been. “Because a year ago today I found you upset on a bench and made an absolute fool of myself until I got you to laugh.” he smiled. He couldn;t help but think how much had changed since that night. The world was a much darker place, and Riley was a much darker person. “I wasn’t sure if you still wanted to celebrate this as our anniversary since we had that little break in the middle.” she admitted. But he wanted to do whatever she did. So if she didn’t care about the break and wanted to keep on like they had been together all of this time, he was happy to oblige her.

One look at Riley's face told Kinsey all that she needed to know. He knew what today was. He remembered. While it really shouldn't have been that much of a big deal to her, it kind of was. A year ago she fell in love with Riley. Even though they had all those problems in the middle, she still loved him. She squeezed his hand as he answered her question. "I don't think you made a fool of yourself. From what I remember, you were just being super sweet and nice." As he normally was. Riley told her why he hadn't brought it up before and Kinsey shrugged. "Today is the day I met you. Even if we didn't label it as an anniversary because of that break, it's still the day I met you." She lifted herself up on her toes and kissed his cheek. "I love you, Riley." Kinsey whispered, smiling as she said the words. She felt such relief that she didn't have to pretend she didn't care about him anymore. They were together, and really that was what mattered. @riley

She admitted that even if it didn’t mark a full year of them being together, it did mark a year of them knowing one another being close. It kind of baffled Riley that even though they were in the same year and the same house, it took them until the spring of their 6th year to really get to know one another. He had never noticed Kinsey. She was far from the girl he was ‘supposed’ to be with anyway. And honestly, he was pretty far from the type of girl he had seen himself ending up with. But he couldn’t imagine his life without her. “It still marks a year of my life being changed forever.” he added, very cheesily, before leaning down to meet her kiss.
@kinsey THE END
