Sybil felt like she was trapped in a nightmare. She and Lusie had attended the Quidditch Finals, though neither of them were wild fans of the sport. Edmund had been playing for his team, so as good family does, they went to support him. Then, chaos. Explosions, the stadium engulfed in smoke and flame, as chaos broke out. Swarms of people rushing to the exits, stampeding over each other to try and get to the safety of the forest outside. She had lost track of Lusie and her boyfriend during this time, but thankfully they had been able to find each other and Apparate back home. Edmund hadn’t made it. Those words haunted Sybil’s mind as the Ministry worker came to deliver the news to her family. The reactions of her family members differed, but Sybil had felt like she was struck into stone. No, there was no way this was possible. Ed couldn’t be gone, he just couldn’t! But here they were at his funeral. The family had been present together earlier that morning as he was laid to rest in the family crypt. It hadn’t been until that coffin had lowered into its space that it finally hit Sybil that her little brother was gone. She felt as if she couldn’t breathe, couldn’t cry, couldn’t do anything. Not in front of everyone at least. Except Lusie. As the funeral guests gave their condolences, Sybil caught her baby sisters eye and gestured towards the gardens. She had to get away from all of this, but she couldn’t be fully alone right now. She hoped Lusie would understand and excuse herself, and so Sybil made her way to the gardens and sat on the stone bench, waiting. @lusie

Lusie was never one for sports, but Ed was. And this was such a big deal that of course she had gone to support him. She had gone with her sister and with Toby. Surprisingly, she was having a great time, and it was extremely exciting to watch her brother play in the Quidditch Championship with his team. But then tragedy struck, the stadium exploded, and Ed didn’t make it out.
Lusie fell to her knees as soon as the ministry worker came to them. Tears instantly blurred her eyes. She felt like she was seeing double and the room was spinning. Edmund was her best friend. Undoubtedly. He was the one that she told everything to before she told her girlfriends, or Toby, or either of her other siblings. It was always Ed. Ed was her protector, he was her confidant, he was her rock: the shoulder she cried on. And now they were telling her that he was gone?! Her immediate reaction was to deny it. If she didn’t believe it then it wasn’t true. But she couldn’t wish her brother back to life.
The funeral felt extremely surreal. They had attended them before for other, older, family members, and for their father. But she had almost been too young then to understand. This one was impossible. She caught Sybli’s eye as she nodded towards the garden. Everyone around them were chatting with other guests and she nodded at her sister, asking Toby to wait here for a bit while she went and talked to her. She followed after her sister swiftly, slowing as she rounded the corner and saw her on the bench. Without saying anything she sat down next to her and simply took her hand.

Sybil saw Lusie come around the corner and sat down, taking her hand. She squeezed her sisters’ hand and sighed shakily. “Ed would hate this,” she said, gesturing with her free hand towards the interior. “He always hated parties, even those in his honor. He lived for Quidditch, he found something that he was good at that we all weren’t. He loved that.” Sybil paused to inhale a shaky breath. She was trying so hard to not cry; Ed wouldn’t want her crying all the time. He’d want her to be strong, like their father had told them to be before he was murdered. This was that same scene playing again, wasn’t it? Sybil did not believe the Prophet; no fireworks malfunction had caused that type of explosion. “I just can’t believe he’s gone,” she said softly. Sitting back on the bench, Sybil took three deep breaths. “I don’t think it was a fireworks malfunction Lus. There’s no way after everything the Ministry would be so careless in an accident of this level. And it just so happened to be where the Minister had been after her leaving her box? It all just seems too...convenient,” she told her, looking at her in the eye as she said it so she knew she wasn’t just saying it out of grief. @lusie

Sybil allowed her to take her hand and insisted right away that ed would hate this. Lusie couldn’t help herself from letting a little laugh escape her lips. He certainly would. He never liked this sort of thing, he never really cared much for anything regarding being a part of the royal family. It still felt wrong to be thinking about him in past tense. “I know…” Lusie nodded. She knew that Ed didn’t always have the best relationship with all of his siblings, but he almost always let Lusie into his head. She knew how proud he was that he was doing something on his own. Quidditch was his life, and he had made it on his own.
Sybil admitted that she didn’t think it was fireworks that caused the explosion at the Quidditch championship. Lusie shook her head, she didn’t want to believe that it was a planned attack. There had been too many of those and she was sure that they were over, the head of the purifiers was dead, wasn’t she? She opened her mouth to protest, but she saw the look on Sybil’s face. She truly believed it. “You think someone set that up on purpose?” she asked. Her heart wrenched. If it was on purpose, and not a tragic accident, Ed’s death felt all the more awful.

Sybil ran her hands through her hair and sighed. “I don’t know Lus,” she said softly, looking over at her sister. “The logical side of me is telling me to leave it be, it was an accident, and nothing will change the fact that our brother is dead. No magic can bring back the dead, so let it go.” She paused before standing up and starting to pace. “But the part where nothing ever is how it seems, and that Elaine was caught so...easily. There’s something off.” Of course, Sybil had no idea how Elaine was actually caught and killed, but she’d heard her department higher ups whispering when they thought she was filling out paperwork. They believed something was off, so that had planted seeds of doubt in her head. Sybil sat back down next to Lusie and took her hand. “I’m just rambling, my brain is on overdrive, because if I stop it for just one second, all those feelings, they’ll just rush right in and I don’t know if I can handle it right now,” she admitted shakily, feeling the tears build up in her eyes. Edmund was dead, they had buried him this morning and were now at some sort of party to celebrate his life. “I just don’t know Lus,” she repeated, squeezing her sisters’ hand. @lusie

Lusie liked to assume that the simplest answer was the right one, that was what made sense, who would go out of their way to set up complex plots against the entire world? Who would want to attack and even kill thousands of people? Well, Sybil had a point, Elaine would. Not that Lusie knew much about her, she didn’t really take the time to do a lot of research as far as the woman was involved, as privileged as it was, Lusie liked to think about things she could control, things that made her happy, things that were easy. But now, without Edmund, nothing was easy. He was the reason she could get away with trying to see the bright side of life. He dealt with the darkness to keep her in the light.
“There were already fireworks at the match, it makes sense that someone just didn’t know what they were meant to do with them, some intern or something had them facing the wrong direction...” she mumbled, her voice getting quieter and quieter as she continued to speak. Then she started to shake her head. “No, Sybil, that’s crazy! You’re making this into something worse than it already is…” the painful thing was that Lusie believed her, but she couldn’t. She stood up, dropping her sisters, hand, pacing quickly with her head in her hands.

Sybil sighed; upsetting her little sister was the last thing she ever wanted to. Especially now they were in yet another period of mourning. “Lu wait,” she called, getting up and hurrying after her. “I’m sorry Lu,” she said, then put her arms around her sister. “Look you’re right, it was likely just a horrifyingly terrible accident…” she trailed off, breaking away for a moment. “I just keep flashing back to Dad’s death, and the media frenzy following it. I know Mum took extra lengths to shield us from all the theories but I did see some of them.” Sybil shook her head sadly. “I don’t want you to ever read them, some are just absolutely mental but….I don’t know maybe it just got in my head that maybe something sinister was at play here.”
Sybil went and sat back down, and gestured for Lusie to join her. “Let’s forget the whole thing,” she said, then nodded towards the window. “Do you want to tell me about him?” she asked, hoping to change the subject to a lighter tone. @lusie

Sybil explained why she felt that way and that she had basically gone down a rabbit hole of reading and looking to theories of why their dad had died and now just had the same expectation of Ed’s death. “The horrible thing is - I kind of believe you.” Lusie whispered. That was why it was hurting her so much. It was awful but after Sybil said it, it was like something clicked in the back of her mind. It made sense that it wasn’t just an accident. There were no details of the accident released to the public. But she couldn’t fully wrap her head around the idea. She couldn’t even begin to imagine that someone would want to kill her brother. Her best friend. And so many others.
Eventually, her sister sat back down and brought Lusie over with her. She asked her to forget the whole thing but Lusie wasn’t sure that she could. However, there was no use going back to a group of muggles acting upset over a possible murder case rather than the accident they were all told about. Her sister nodded towards the window and asked if she wanted to tell her about him. “Toby?” she asked for clarification. “He’s great. He’s really kind and Ed really liked him.” she explained. Though Ed didn’t like him at all at first, they had managed to be friends pretty quickly after Lusie and him started dating.

As soon as Lusie said she believed her, Sybil saw an opening . “That’s just it. The fireworks just so happened to be accidentally set up where Minister Granger and other very high ranking Ministry officials were seated? There’s no way that was an accident,” she said firmly, very stout in her belief. She didn’t think believing it wasn’t an accident belittled Ed’s death or changed the fact that he died. In fact, knowing her little brother, to die because of a Purifiers attack, or some other magical terrorist attack, would have suited his idea of how he’d want to be remembered rather than an accident. Ed likely wasn’t the target - she was positive that Minister Granger was - but he was still a casualty of the result. And who else but the Purifiers would want a Muggleborn Minister dead? And to take out a member of the Muggle royalty, well, she had a horrible feeling Elaine Dupree wouldn’t mind that one bit. “Well as your older sister I fear I have to inform you it is my duty to get to know the boy who has captured my dear sisters’ affections,” Sybil told her, nudging her sister playfully to elevate the mood a little. Ed would hate everyone just moping around, even at his own funeral. He would have played some prank or done something else to get others minds off their own sadness. “So spill the details Lus, how did the two of you meet? What transpired on the Hogwarts grounds?” she probed, teasing her sister ever so slightly. @lusie

Everything Sybil said made so much sense but she still didn’t want to believe it. However, the more she heard, the more it felt like someone was finally telling her the truth. Luise hated believing that there were people in this world capable of so much hate. People who didn’t care about the value of someone’s life. Or thousands of peoples lives. However, there was no doubt over the course of the last few years that those people not only existed, but were out and about, intermingling with the rest of the population. They would have been there at the event, planning this explosion, right under the nose of officials and guards and not have even been suspected. “Well what can we do about it?” Lusie asked. Were the aurors investigating the event? Was there anything that could be done? She felt so helpless. She always had Ed to tell her what to do.
She could tell Sybil was trying to lighten the mood by asking about Toby. She knew how emotional Lusie got and she probably didn’t like seeing her younger sister emotional like this as much as Luise didn’t like being so. Lusie obliged, nodding when Sybil said it was her duty to get to know Toby. She wanted her to know him. She wanted everyone to know him. “Well, he was my herbology partner. We weren’t really even friends until we started working with Snargaluffs and one of their thorns got under my skin and cut me from my wrist to my elbow. Toby basically carried me to the hospital wing. And Ed burst in yelling at him.” she giggled instinctively, remembering how dramatic the whole thing felt. Then she shrugged. “Toby’s been around ever since then.” she couldn’t barely even remember when the switch flipped. Toby was just comfortable. And he was goofy. And he wanted her. She was so grateful for how dependable he was. “You’d like him.” she concluded.

Sybil sighed, her shoulders slumping forward. “I don’t know what else we can do. It’s frustrating, because in the Muggle world you know we have influence, but we can’t let the palace officials investigate this. They don’t know what we are, and it needs to stay that way as long as the Statute of Secrecy remains in place,” she said, feeling a little helpless. She wished there was more they could do, but the Ministry was being very tight lipped about the whole investigation. It frustrated Sybil as her brother was one of the casualties, but to them, he was just that - a casualty. The Minister and other top officials had been killed after all, so they were higher up on the magical food chain. All Sybil knew was that she wanted justice for her brother, and it killed her that she couldn’t do anything to help. As the topic moved to Toby, Sybil felt a little more relaxed. She could see the way Lusie’s eyes lit up, the way she sat up a little straighter, the little glances back into the room where Toby was mingling with the others. Oh Lusie had it bad for this boy, and she knew Edmund had done his best to protect his baby sister, as any big brother would. Now, that responsibility would fall to her. “Well then I simply must be introduced to him,” she stated matter-of-factly. She stood up and looked expectantly at Lusie. “Well? Shall we go in?” she asked, hands on her hips. @lusie ooc: up to you if you want tobias charles watkins to join this one or a new one!

Lusie sighed because she knew her sister was right. In this world, they were at the top. But in the wizarding world they were nothing special. They weren’t involved in wizarding politics and had very little, if any, pull with the ministry even with Sybil working there. Maybe instead of getting into international muggle politics as she planned, Lusie should start to consider involving herself with inter-world politics between the ministry and the muggles. She knew the prime minister and the queen after all, both were inside the palace as they spoke. Who better to unify and communicate than Lusie the Princess/Witch? A thought for another time.
“Yeah, okay.” Lusie agreed when Sybil insisted she needed to meet Toby. Lusie had no reason to want to delay it, she liked Toby, she even loved him. She didn’t really see him going anywhere anytime soon and she wanted Sybil to know him. Now that Ed was gone she was left without a best friend. Perhaps Sybil could help fill that void. “Suppose we’d better.” she didn’t want to leave Toby to have to make conversation with all those muggle politicians for too long on his own, though she was sure he was alright. She followed her sister into the palace and over to her boyfriend, who looked very handsome in a suit, she had to admit. “hey Toby, this is Sybil, my older sister.” she introduced the two formally.

Toby never enjoyed social gatherings. Small talk was something he always dreaded even before it was happening. There was only so much he could talk about until his social timer started to run out and he wanted to go home. This was the first funeral he'd ever attended for a friend that wasn't already old, or dying. The sadness was numbing. He couldn't believe that Edmund was gone. The entire situation was hard for him to believe.
Lusie was floating around the service which meant he had to fend for himself. Toby was working through his timidness, often finding himself feeling pathetic when he felt himself wanting to anchor to Lusie for comfort. Tonight he ended up standing in a circle of politicians with thick accents and strong drinks in their hands. They allowed Toby to stand around them probably because they knew he was involved with Princess Lusie and Edmund, otherwise he had no business there. He stayed quiet most of the time, mostly listening and watching, praying no one would point out how 'quiet' he was. A part of him wanted to be left alone but he was trying to be a good sport. It was hard for him to comprehend how he was feeling. He wanted to be strong for Lusie and her family in their time and need.
A tap on the shoulder caused him to turn around, his expression slowly spreading into a relieved smile, caramel eyes flickering, when he saw it was his beloved girlfriend Lusie. Thank Merlin. She followed with formally introducing her older sister, Sybil. Toby had heard of and seen Sybil in the media, since she was a part of the Royal Family, but it was his first time seeing/meeting her in person. Toby was slightly caught off guard, but was happy to meet her, "Oh, hello." he said quickly with a smile, growing wider and awkward, he couldn't help being a dork. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Sybil. I've heard so many great things about you from Lusie and Ed." Toby said while going into a handshake but she kind of looked like she needed an informal hug so he took a chance.

Sybil knew how close Lusie and Ed had been; it had always been Sybil and Will and Ed and Lusie. Sybil when she was young hadn’t wanted her little sister following her around everywhere, so Lusie had ended up gravitating to Ed. Sybil had loved Ed too, and wanted to get to the bottom of what really happened at the Quidditch Finals. She didn’t think the attack targeted Ed, since they had been in a place with witches and wizards. While they were known, they weren’t the same celebrity status as say, Hermione Granger had been. Sybil smiled as Lusie went to go get Toby; she knew they had met at Hogwarts after Sybil and Will had graduated, so she had not gotten a chance to meet him at school. She had seen him in the Ravenclaw common room from time to time, but with him being younger than her she hadn’t really conversed with him much. “It’s good to finally meet you too,” she said, accepting the hug gratefully. Sybil looked over at Lusie as they hugged and smiled her approval. “I’m glad to hear they speak of me so kindly,” she added, stepping back with a small laugh. “I’d love to know how the two of you got acquainted with each other,” she suggested, taking a seat on the bench and gesturing the two of them to join her. tobias charles watkins@lusie

Toby looked over at Lusie with a smile before opening his mouth to answer Sybils question of how he and Lusie had met. He wasn't sure if telling her the full details of the Snargaluff getting a hold of Lusie, and causing minor harm, but she seemed easy going enough. Plus, Toby wanted to win over any family he could. He couldn't refrain from smiling adoringly at Lusie first, hell, he didn't even notice he did it. "Lusie and I were assigned lab partners in Herbology last year. We were always friends and I'm more on the quiet side but Lusie has always gotten me outta my shell." he told Sybil easily, a slow spreading smile as he continued, "I learned how protective Ed was of Lusie from the very beginning, after we had the misfortunate loss of a battle with a Snargaluff and he found us in the hospital wing. It was my fault by default." he shared with a chuckle and small smile, though he felt sadness inside. Hell, he missed Edmund. He would let him yell at him again as many times as he wanted, just to have him back again. There was a small but growing tinge of sadness in his stomach after he said Edmund's name. He'd do whatever he could do to keep his friends name and legacy alive.
(Hope its okay I replied again, Toby wants to win Sybil over)
