Rhys remained unconvinced by her words. If anything he looked even more suspicious as he asked if she wasn't. It was more a statement then an actual question. Maria put on her most angelic smile. "Of course I'm not!" though.... if you knew Maria you'd have serious doubts. Maria wasn't the innocent sort.
Maria twirled a lock of her head as he tried to decide what they'd do. It was his choice after all! Though when he spoke he just wanted to walk around. She raised an eyebrow. After a moment he added the maze. That would be interesting. She'd never done a corn maze before. Though, if he didn't know what was here, then that was probably why he suggested it. So, she smiled. "It's your choice. Whatever you want to do."
Rhys took her hand, leading her through the crowd. Thankfully he was turned away so he couldn't see her surprise. This was new. Maria had held hands with people before. Viola. But that was a distant memory now. His hand was warm in her own, and she found her feet carrying her, following him without any hesitation. "Don't like crowds?" Out of the two of them Maria knew she was the more social. She partied hard, and didn't care who with. Rhys had never seemed like the anti-social type, but he had a very different idea of fun then her (well.. fun out and about. They both agreed when they were alone.).

half my bones in the city streets the other in my sheets i don't think they'll ever get the chance to meet
October 25, 2025
Rhys hadn't really thought twice when he grabbed Maria's hand, it had felt natural to do so and that was probably just his comfort around her at this point. Although the extent of them knowing one another well extended as far as physically it had created a certain comfort zone. There was a chemistry there but Rhys figured it was pure physical attraction, she was half-veela after all and she seemed to accept and even like his more aggressive side and he didn't have to hide it either. Rhys hadn't noticed, as he focused on the crowd in front of him that was following him without issue and her hand hadn't left his own. Finally, they reached a less crowded area and he heard her question. 'Don't like crowds?' Maria wondered. Rhys didn't and that had been the one perk of going into Curse-Breaking versus the Ministry was the independence and at the most three of them would group up for a job.
"No, I don't." Rhys said mostly matter of factly. There was always a strange suffocating feeling in the middle of the crowd, maybe the constant buzz of the chatter around him left him unable to think. Rhys had never told Maria, even that night almost a fortnight ago but potion he took sometimes made him more sensitive to sensory input. Not to the extent of the morning after or that Jamie had but it made crowds more or less something to dread. He turned back to face and look and Maria and he'd almost forgotten her hand was still in his own, he let it go and cleared his throat, looking around again. "We can go carve pumpkins, I think that's nearby." Rhys spoke, adding a slight pause. "If you promise not to stab me with the knife." He added, mostly joking but he also held onto that doubt that had been created when she had let him win the guessing the drink game. Her game.

That surprised Maria. That Rhys wasn't a fan of crowds. Considering how they'd met (both that first night and at the club), she would have thought he was more comfortable with them. But there relationship had been purely physical. Except for a few rare occasions, they didn't really talk about themselves. So, in a way, they were both still very much mysteries to each other. Despite how much they'd spent together. Though most of their activities didn't need words.
Then, just like that he let go of her hand. Her hand immediately felt cold. Maria didn't like the cold. And not just because she could create fire. The cold reminded her of death. Loss. She wouldn't say that, however. Instead she brought her hand back to herself and clasped her hands behind her back, out of sight. "Honestly, do I look like someone that would stab you?" Actually... Considering her antics, that wasn't really an out of character worry for people. "Don't answer that." She hadn't stabbed anyone that she could recall, at least.... Again, that she could recall. "I promise, no stabbing," she added with a genuine smile. "I've never carved pumpkins before. Durmstrang wasn't really a holiday celebrating type of place." Maria had never told Rhys where she'd gone to school, now that she thought about it. But he'd probably assumed, since Elias had gone to Durmstrang.

October 25, 2025
The way Maria had asked him about crowds only reminded him that although they shared a physical familiarity there were details that were unknown. But it wasn't a surprise their 'relationship', as it were, wasn't anything much more than physical and their encounter with one another here at this event was merely accidental. In fact, Rhys was a bit surprised at himself for even approaching her and initiating this conversation in the first place--but then again she could have very well have just left him there. The majority of their communication was unspoken, merely physical actions and that language had been something learned over these past months and as their familiarity grew so did their fluency.
Rhys gave her a look and his eyebrows raised slightly, though before he could answer her question she prompted him not to. Aside from having witnessed her temper one at least one occasion it was a situation of it took one to know one. Rhys had a temper himself and it never took much to set him off, it was part of his constant composure to keep that in check as best he could. Still, she promised him there would be no violent antics or least stabbing--but then again he still wasn't sure if she was toying with him in a way he hadn't figured out yet. "Really?" Rhys was surprised, though he supposed he took for granted some of the traditions he even grown up with at the orphanage and learning what he had about other cultures through his work--he had just assumed. Durmstrang. He wasn't surprised, but at the same time he had never thought about her schooling. She had gone to school with Elias after all.
Rhys was about to speak when he felt someone walk incredibly close to him, it was still so crowded. Moving closer to Maria and almost standing to her side he looked a group of kids walking past him, instinctively putting his hand on Maria's arm as a way to stay together though his grip was very soft. "Shall we?" He asked, hoping the station wasn't terribly crowded.

To be honest, there were multiple reasons why she'd never carved pumpkins. The holiday wasn't as big in Sweden. Nor were her grandparents the sort to celebrate the holiday, as it wasn't "Romani", and they didn't want her associating with non- Romani children. Then Durmstrang, of course, was just a harsh and unforgiving place. To be honest, Maria had liked Durmstrang. You'd always known how you stood with others. No fake smiles and backstabbing. If someone didn't like you, you knew it. It wasn't really that political of a place either. The strong had the power, and the weak didn't. While brutal, Durmstrang had always been simple to understand. So as he spoke, she smirked and twirled a lock of her hair between her fingers. "We were much to busy learning dark magic to carve pumpkins." While she sounded like she was teasing... There was a hint of truth to that. Durmstrang did have a tendency to teach the dark arts...
Boy, he really didn't like crowds. When someone had gotten too close, he'd almost instinctively moved closer to her, eyeing the intruder. Maria raised an eyebrow, having not even noticed the students walking past until he brought attention to them. He gripped her arm, as if he might lose her, but it wasn't strong. She could pull away if she wanted. And yet... she didn't. "Let's go then," she answered with a bright smile. She pulled her arm away then, but immediately took his hand and headed towards the pumpkin carving station. It had just felt so natural the first time he'd taken her hand that she didn't even think about it that time. She was just... comfortable with Rhys. He didn't make her feel like she had to guard herself. Didn't feel like she had to keep them at arm's length once she got what she wanted from them. In fact.. What even did she want from him? That thought struck a nerve and she almost stopped walking, but she recovered. No, she wouldn't think about. Wouldn't consider that that might mean.

half my bones in the city streets the other in my sheets i don't think they'll ever get the chance to meet
October 25, 2025
Rhys sort of gave a look of agreement when she mentioned Durmstrang and the Dark Arts, it was well known the reputation of this particular magical school and it wasn't the first time he'd heard that statement made but an alumni as well. In his career there were a handful of Curse Breakers that had graduated from Durmstrang and though he did not ask too often about it most did not speak that much about it either. Still, it had slipped his mind slightly that she had gone to school with Elias who had been the Durmstrang champion after all. The crowd seemed to surround them more and Rhys had begun to feel more and more uncomfortable and he watched as the latest group passed him and Maria as he had moved closer to her so they wouldn’t be separated. When he looked back, she acknowledged him with a smile, but it was different. Not her usual mischievous smirk she tended to send his direction and he was put on guard. The difference took a second to register since he wasn’t used to it and if he was honest with himself he was slightly distracted by it, she had a beautiful smile and it was much more welcoming that her usual playful expressions.
Her hand grabbed his and he obediently followed keeping his hand in hers and quickening his pace so that he could catchup and walk next to her. It wasn’t awkward, but he figured all that time spent physically together would lessen any awkwardness associated with physical touch at this point—so he didn’t focus on it. In fact, he had to admit that this was….well nice, and though it was outside the realm of his normal routine or activities he didn’t feel much anxiety about it except for when it got too crowded. It was expected, however, with Halloween less than a week away. Taking account of their surroundings, a force of habit, he looked back to his side and half-smiled. They were almost at the Pumpkin station when he suddenly heard a loud voice behind him, a man had come up and spoke a bit loudly as he held a half empty beer in one hand. ”Hey! I paid you for the night, what are you doing with this jackass?” He barely seemed stable on his two feet and Rhys turned letting go of Maria’s hand in the process as he tried to figure out who he was talking to. He stepped closer and toward Maria, but Rhys moved to block him, she might have been not that much shorter than him, but his size proved an ample shield.
”Listen mate, I don’t know who the hell you are but you better get out of my way.” Rhys took a step forward, he didn’t know what the drunk man was referring to but he was big, burly and drunk and that never tended to end well without some kind of intervention. ”Or what?” Rhys challenged, he had grabbed his wand at some point as he was accustomed to have it quickly available when he was working he did so in real life. ”I suggest you leave, we don’t want any trouble here do we?” Rhys narrowed his eyes, he was a bit taller than the man and his eyes were menacingly dark. If anything was to happen, he wasn’t a real threat and considering how sober Rhys was at this point versus this man who seemed a hard breeze away from falling over. The man took a step back, stumbling a bit. ”Fine, don’t say I didn’t warn you mate.” And he stumbled away probably to get another drink. Despite everything else that occurred so far this night he certainly hadn’t expected that and when he was sure he wasn’t going to come back he put his wand back in his jacket. Rhys felt uneasy, what had he been talking about. He paid? Paid for what? As far as Rhys knew Maria worked as a dancer in that club—not that he could ever forget that encounter, but how did that translate to the Halloween celebrations. He turned around, failing to hide the clear confusion in his face.
Rhys opened his mouth to speak and then closed it again, his brow was furrowed slightly. ”What was he talking about, he paid you?” Rhys could see the pieces of this puzzle but he was failing thus far to put them together in a clear and discernible fashion. ”Did you—were you with him tonight?” the pieces were there but the direction they were steering him toward was not something he wanted to think about or consider, it couldn’t have been right? The clearer his assumption became however, the more the confusion left his face and he felt himself feel that familiar annoyance again. The kickoff of his temper, though why he reacted as such was a mystery to him. How had they gone from such a comfortable place to this? Rhys crossed his arms instinctively, brow still furrowed and expression serious as ever and he paused before he spoke again, if his assumption was also completely wrong this would also go more sideways than it already was. ”Are you….?”

Maria recognized that voice. Though he was slurring considerably more then when he'd left with his friends. What the hell was he doing back here? Well... considering how drunk he sounded... It was a bit clear. He'd come back to find her. Immediately there was a ember of anger igniting deep in Maria's chest. Why couldn't he take no for an answer? He hadn't even paid her that much, she'd already done what he paid for. It wasn't her fault that he hadn't paid more. Before she could react though, Rhys had, placing himself between Maria and her very drunk ex-customer.
The exchange was quick, Rhys speaking up before she could, telling off the drunk, who seemed to rethink his decision to come back very quickly. But she'd said something that royally pissed her off, and... concerned her. He'd mentioned her being paid for the night. Had Rhys heard that? She wasn't exactly ashamed of her side work. She'd admit it if someone asked. But she hated it being weaponized against her. Used to make her feel inferior, or shame her. Or worse, when they used it in the same sentence as Elias. So, while she didn't speak, she was practically seething behind Rhys. Her whole body was tense, her hands clenched into tight fists. Angry at the fool for coming back. Angry at the way he'd spoken like she was his property tonight or something. Angry that Rhys had stepped in the way to defend her instead of letting her handle it.
Then, Rhys turned back to her, and he clearly looked confused. As he spoke though, her heart sank. He'd heard. She didn't say anything yet, trying desperately not to glare at him, but it was so goddamn hard with how angry she was. He started to connect the dots though, and his next comment invoked a reaction. "Not like that," she snapped. She hadn't slept with him, though Rhys' words practically inferred it. Somehow she stopped herself from mentioning he hadn't paid for sex, as that would finalize Rhys' suspicions.. Though he didn't need the help. There was a shift in his body language, and suddenly he was on edge. Defensive. Some men, as she'd found out, seriously didn't like her line of work. And... it seemed Rhys might be one of them. "What?" Her words came out harshly, like a crack of a whip. "Am I what?' She sounded like she was daring him to say it. Daring him to say his suspicions aloud.

half my bones in the city streets the other in my sheets i don't think they'll ever get the chance to meet
October 25, 2025
Rhys clenched his jaw as he did when he was tense and falling into a surly mood, it had shifted so quickly that he’d even surprised himself. Truly he’d been actually feeling relaxed even with the crowd but that short interaction, not even a few minutes felt like it had changed everything. Why? If Rhys’ assumption was correct, then what did it matter? It did to him, but first he needed confirmation. Maria cut him off as he trailed off in his question and he paused, was she really going to make him say it? ’Not like that.’ She had responded sharply with a terse and defensive tone. It only confirmed part of the theory he only wished hadn’t been correct. She was daring him to say it out loud and he hesitated, but that only seemed to fuel the irritation beginning to burn in his chest. For a brief moment he could only look at her with eyes still dark from his encounter with the man moments ago. More questions entered his mind, but he focused on the main one, he wanted to know—he needed to know now.
Not even the crowds that passed him that had bothered him previously sparked a reaction, as far as he knew it was just him and Maria in this moment. Quickly he thought about the past months, that first night they had come together in their grief but then the next time….That had been completely different. She had teased as he was sure many men had been in that very room but also, outside of it apparently. ”You know what.” He snapped back, taking a step so he was closer to her. ”But that’s all this is right?” His voice was low but sharp, the irritation that had been building was now becoming anger. More of the pieces were fitting together. ”I’m just one of your men you play with. How much is my tab now, Maria?” Apparently that’s all this was, that second chance meeting was her way of getting under his skin and bringing him to whatever level of submission she needed him at. It pissed him off and if his tone didn’t show it, his face certainly did. There was so much more he could have said but he was keeping himself as composed as he could considering the public venue.

Despite the festivities there was a tense silence between them. Maria met his dark gaze with her own, a raging fire in her eyes. He moved closer but she stood her ground. He may be taller then her, but not by much. She refused to move her head though, wouldn't give him that satisfaction. So, she just glared up through her lashes at him, not even blinking. As she waiting, waiting for him to say it. Whore. Slut. She'd heard it all. Just say it. But he didn't. Despite not saying it, the words cut. Especially as he continued. Maria hands actually shook from her rage, and she clenched her first tightly shut, her nails digging sharply into her palms. How dare he say that.
Then, it was almost like a flip was switched. A dark calm washed over her. Her dark eyes had gone cold. So cold that it burned. Though her hands were giving off quite a bit of heat. While no flames had appeared the temperature difference would be felt even from where he was standing. "Oh give me more credit then that. It's not just men." Her words were quiet, but they were dripping with the icy heat her eyes had. "Please, you couldn't afford everything I've done to you." She took a final step closer, until they were just a breath apart, finally turning her head just a little to keep meeting his gaze. She still hadn't blinked. "Don't sound so hurt, Rhys. You liked being played with," she breathed, throwing the words he'd said right back at him. She pulled away. She didn't know why him finding out about her sex word hurt so much. Why it made her want to scream. Why did it hurt so much to hear him say those words? To hear that judgement?
The lighthearted mood of earlier was long gone. Maria was done. Done with this fucking place, and done with this conversation. She turned, as if to leave, when an horribly painful face appeared in her vision.
(Rhys next, then tag Max?! Or Max first. you two decide!)

October 25, 2025 Max hadn't been watching what was going on for very long, but it was difficult not to have her attention drawn to a conversation when it was that heated. It wasn't only that, though, because she wasn't really one to eavesdrop, if she could help it. The other aspect of it was that she had been volunteering primarily at the pumpkin carving station when she was at Zombie Island, had only just returned to it, and just so happened to hear the name "Rhys". From an accent that she hadn't heard since her fifth year: Maria. With Rhys. Elias's cousin with her half-brother. She turned to the other students volunteering at the station with her to mouth that she would be right back. Truthfully, she didn't know how long it would take, but she needed to deal with this, whatever in Merlin's name was going on. She didn't know if she wanted to deal with it. It was too late for that, and her eyes had already met Maria's. Maria had never liked her from the moment that they had met. Max hadn't exactly been appreciative of being treated like a small child as a fifteen-year-old, and Hogwarts had felt much more like her territory—because it was. And Maria's control over Elias had never sat quite right with her. Truth be told, she hadn't even known that Maria was still living in Britain. All that she knew was that things had the potential to get ugly. Ensuring that she had her wand in hand, Max kept it close to her side but ready. She wasn't sure whom she needed to address first, Rhys or Maria, but knew that she had to shut this down as quickly as it had presumably begun. Thank Merlin that two years had passed and that she was seventeen. Because she wasn't sure if Rhys had seen her yet, she took the option that probably wouldn't have been advised: Maria first, Rhys after. "Maria," Max called her through slightly gritted teeth, moving slightly towards the older girl's path so that they weren't in the immediate vicinity of any of the children around. half my bones in the city streets the other in my sheets i don't think they'll ever get the chance to meet
October 25, 2025
Rhys had fully expected a different response from Maria and instead while he felt the anger radiating off her as he was sure some was radiating off him she spoke calmly to him, answer in a way that confirmed his assumption. That seemed to make him angrier and he felt his arms cross tight across his chest as if to prevent himself from doing anything. ’not just men’ She clarified, and Rhys wasn’t sure what to make of it, was he supposed to feel special or something? She dated women and he was the only man she was with presumably? For Rhys that didn’t matter to him but only told him the extent of her career, as it were. He knew he had crossed a line with his words and at the moment he didn’t particularly care, his anger overtook whatever composure he had built up that night though since he had run into her here his defenses had fallen with their familiarity and he felt stupid for having let it happen. She moved close to him, closer than she had been a second ago but he didn’t budge—it wasn’t as if they hadn’t been this close before.
But he could only scoff at her words and he broke the eye contact that had been maintained. The last thing he wanted or needed was for Maria to be right and the mere thought of that only added to his building fury. No, this had never been his idea in the first place. He took a deep breath through his nose and looked back at her, moving his face a bit closer so his voice could still be low. ”Really? You started this.” He paused wondering if he was willing to stop himself from continuing to cross that line. ”Fucking with me, I don’t think Elias would have approved.” Rhys took a step back and he watched as she turned to leave and he didn’t care that she was. Rhys was angry and had kept his arms cross to prevent himself from punching the nearest plank of wood he could find but then she stopped and he looked over and his eyes went wide and his breath seemed to catch in his throat. Where there was anger in his chest previous was replaced by a sort of panic. Max.
She stood there glaring at Maria and suddenly he remembered where they were and why he had even come to Zombie Island in the first place, her wand was out and Rhys uncrossed his arms and moved forward toward Max before they cursed each other to pieces. ”Hold on Max.” He tried to say calmly. Shit. This was the last thing he needed at that moment and what he had fought to keep more or less a secret for the past five months was now out in the open.

Maria was determined to just leave. Until she heard that name. Elias. How dare he use Elias against her? The same way that man had, as if the dead had feelings. Maria whirled back around. Behind that intense and wrathful anger was a hurt. Deeper then she'd ever shown Rhys. "Don't you dare mention him. You weren't there when he died. You didn't feel him die." She was seething, her words shaking with the raw emotion that she'd been bottling up for over a year. "The rest of you Greybacks barely knew him. You call yourself family, but your sisters are the one making a shit show of his memory, acting like they own him. You're the ones he wouldn't approve of." Maria had rarely spoken about Elias with Rhys, despite how much time they'd spent together this year. It was clear that even after a year and a half his death was still fresh, still just as raw as the day it happened for her. She might act like she'd started to heal. To move on, but she hadn't.
Maria turned to leave again, this time determined to not let anything stop her.
Until she heard her name in a voice that almost set her off right then. Maria was on the verge of exploding. Maria stopped walking and turned that icy cold, yet burn you to your soul fire, look on the youngest Greyback. If looks could kill... Immediately Maria noticed the wand and she let out a slow and controlled breath, though it shook with her rage. "Princess, if you point your fucking wand at me again, I swear to god I will hurt you. I let it slide the first time, but I won't be forgiving of a second."

October 25, 2025 Maria cautioned her not to point her wand at her, calling her "princess" in the same way that she had two years before. Max knew better than to do that; she didn't want to anger her any more than it was apparent that she was already. She didn't know what had happened between her and Rhys, and she wasn't sure if she wanted to know exactly what had prompted the row. Doing damage control meant not escalating the situation, and—to her own surprise—she held back. Rhys was then the one who intervened, stepping between the two of them and telling her to hold on. "I'm not going to touch her," Max noted firmly and clearly, making sure that she had spoken in a way that made it apparent to anyone who was looking on at the scene. In the event that anything dangerous did happen, she didn't want to be seen as being in the wrong. She directed her attention more towards Rhys than to Maria with what she said next. The tension was still palpable, but if Maria could cool off… "I just want to know what in Merlin's name is going on, Rhys."rhys alexander greyback@maria

Threatening words flew from Max to Maria and then from Maria to Max and he wasn’t sure with even all his training in advanced magic, dueling and other subjects that he was going to be able to prevent what was going to happen at this family friendly place. He knew the two women did not like another and he’d always had the sense that they despised one another which had made the entire situation all the more risky and challenging but he just hadn’t been able to stop himself. And now he was facing the consequences of many of his own actions and while his panic was moving back into irritation, he felt more irritated that he could only be angry with himself. Rhys knew Max and he heard princess come from Maria and he closed his eyes for a moment, wishing he hadn’t crossed those lines with her for fear of his sister’s safety.
He moved forward to stand in between them but faced his sister, not to protect Maria in this situation as he had done previously with the man—client of hers but to face his sister instead. To his surprise, she kept her wand lowered and kept her composure in a way that he was envious of since he’d lost his own by now. Then it came, the question he had been dreading and he felt that uncomfortable feeling in the pit of his stomach and he didn’t respond right away and looked anywhere but at his youngest sister. He cleared his throat and looked back at her, ”It’s nothing, Max.” He said sternly looking at his sister and at least loud enough so Maria could hear him. He wasn’t lying when he said it was nothing, clearly this had all been a game to Maria and Rhys was just a plaything but he didn’t have a clue which direction to go at this point and he knew it was futile but he almost hoped she would let it go but he knew his sister and she wouldn’t.

Aw, Rhys was trying to do damage control. Stepping between Maria and Max, facing his sister and telling her "it's nothing" when she asked what was going on. For some reason his words hurt, and it just made him want to hurt. She was vindictive and cruel, when the situation called for it. But this would be the first time Maria had really turned on someone that she... well got along with (not the feeling, but that was about as far as she was willing to admit to herself). It felt wrong, wanting to make him hurt. And yet it didn't stop her. Because he'd started it. He'd made her hurt first.
Knowing she was about to hurt him, or at least cause some very serious problems with his sister, brought an almost eerie calmness to Maria. She leaned around Rhys, to give Max a cold smile. "What your dear brother is soooooo afraid to tell you is that he just found out he's not the only person I've been sleeping with." Her cold gaze moved back to Rhys, to see what kind of reaction he might have to the comment. How would he get himself out of this one?
