It seemed that curse breaking was both an under rated and under appreciated career. Those who wanted to join needed to have both the knowledge and physical ability to succeed. It wasn't an easy or glamorous job. Those who wished to get rich off of the job was simply fooling themselves. True, Jasper had his own residence, and lived a comfortable enough life, it was far from the luxuries he had grown up with.
Rhys mentioned that it would have been the first time he had gotten in trouble. That sounded right. Though he was glad to hear that it was something small. He gave a sigh "It should be a known fact that newbies get grunt work to start off with" Jasper justified. It was the best way get new recruits settled into their career. It also was a way of testing their adeptness for the job. "If you can't stand the grunt stuff, there's no way you could manage an area on your own." There was a level of trust that was given to you when you were left on your own to do something. Before that, you had to prove that you could do everything, and were patient enough to take your time. Jasper chose and loved the career of Curse Breaker mostly because no one cared that he was a Yaxley. They just cared that he could do his job.
He mentioned the half-goblin lawyer, who seemed to scare most people. As long as you did your job right, signed all required documents, and didn't do anything stupid, you had nothing to fear. But she still wasn't someone you wanted to cross. ”I definitely do not want that.” he shook his head and chuckled. "Definitely not a part of the job that I miss." There was plenty that he did miss, but paperwork and the legal staff wasn't one of them. Jasper drank more of the liquid. The brotherhood of curse breakers was a strong bond.
Rhys mentioned that it was good for him to get away, and Jasper laughed. He defiantly saw a lot of himself in the man "I was definitely in the same boat. There was a lot I was running away from when i was eighteen. It's amazing how much you grow up when exploring cursed ruins" He said sarcastically, though meaning about half of it. You did have to grow up pretty fast, especially when surrounded by an ancient environment.
”I don’t think the boss or Scylla approves of our pranking.” Jasper took another drink and smiled "The boss, no, I'm sure he wouldn't. But I'm not sure that Scylla would care, as long as we got the job done, and didn't make too much of a mess in the process.

His work helped him afford a comfortable living, though it had been a rough start after he’d graduated since he’d basically taken short residence at the Leaky Cauldron without a place of his own until he started his training. Being constantly on the move allowed him to save what he earned until he eventually did get his own flat, his first home. Some Curse Breakers were flashier, and it really depend on personality at that point, though Rhys tended to stay away from those individuals as they tended to be the ones out for glory as well. They reveled in the press releases while Rhys preferred to keep his head down and work. He agreed with Jasper, the grunt work needed to be done and would get done one way or another but every recruit started at the bottom. ”I agree, but some of these kids just want to hit the ground running.” There was this false idea of the job that it was some grand adventure all the time and while it could be, some jobs could also be rather mundane as well.
”No discipline.” He added, no resoluteness or ambition. These kids just wanted the goal without worrying about the path in between. If you weren’t disciplined that was how you ended up injured, dead or with some permanent curse following you around for the rest of your life. Still, it didn’t stop even the best of them from getting in trouble now and then or accidentally destroying something valuable and then the lawyers had to get involved. It wasn’t as if they ever did these things on purpose, Rhys with his love of history himself wasn’t looking to purposefully destroy a priceless large statue but if it came to life and attempted to maul him then he needed to defend himself. It just couldn’t be helped. He drank more of his whiskey as he reminisced about the attitude he’d come into this new job with, he was seventeen and still as sulky as ever, but he’d been put into his place by an older Curse Breaker who stopped Rhys from making a fool of himself on more than on occasion. It had been good in the end though. He wasn’t the same as he was sixteen anymore.
”Well, if you’re stuck in your head that’s how you end up pummeled by a moving wall.” He recounted as an incident that had happened to him early on and he’d traded several broken ribs and many bruises simply because his mind hadn’t been in the present. From what he could gather certain other careers he supposed such as in the Ministry took a different shine to where one came from and what they were capable of. He was sure there were Aurors who were excellent at their job and those that were in there because of a family relation. It could be a blessing and a curse as people held expectations for you either way. Rhys knew Jasper came from one of those backgrounds, but he just knew the man as a Curse Breaker and a friend.

Jasper had found that many newly graduated students had been sold on the idea of finding a long lost treasure and becoming instantaneously famous. Because of this, simple things like walking the perimeter of a room, reading runes, reviewing the history of the area, and checking for traps, became less desirable for the eager adventurers. But it was necessary for them to learn to do the little step, or they would never find the earth shatteringly important item. ”I agree, but some of these kids just want to hit the ground running.” Jasper took another drink and nodded "And that is why their not allowed out on their own. One should never run in a cursed tomb" Jasper chuckled at what seemed to be a joke, but couldn't be more true. If you ran in an unchecked area, you were more likely to get an ancient, and most likely cursed, arrow in your leg. This had happened to Jasper once, not because he was running, but because someone else leaped before they looked. It was the only thing that he could do. It was either him or the kid, and while it was the kids fault, Jasper was quite protective. It was his job to ensure new recruits safety while he was training.
He could only nod in agreement that the kids had no discipline. They were eighteen, just out of school. They thought that they had it all, they were sorely wrong. "If they want to make it as a curse breaker, they'll need ot get some." There were times when you had to make certain calls. It was important to the job to ensure the safety of the artifacts. But no curse breaker would fault another for choosing their life over the artifact.
”Well, if you’re stuck in your head that’s how you end up pummeled by a moving wall.” Jasper raised his glass "Or nearly impaled by a spear." He drank from his glass. Getting injured on the job was a sign that you were a Curse Breaker. You weren't considered one of them until your first injury. At least it had felt that way. "I still have a scar from that one" He mused as he took another sip of his nearly empty glass.

Jasper was correct, if they just let Curse Breakers run amok as soon as they graduated and completed some training they wouldn’t last very long. The new recruits were not allowed to work by themselves for a while as the more senior Curse Breakers were and then the ones that fell in the middle helped training the newer ones. It had never been Rhys’ favorite part, he just wanted to work. He nodded in agreement when Jasper spoke. ”Still, it wouldn’t be a good year if someone didn’t fall down a shaft.” Rhys said casually, as far as he knew it happened. Every. Year. So, he supposed it was a good omen of sorts, and also was quite funny—unless it happened on one’s watch. However, the point was a still a serious one. There were nasty curses and traps in some of these tombs that could prove very deadly and very quickly and fortunately he himself hadn’t seen a recruit terribly maimed, but he had heard stories. Rhys himself had been injured quite a bit on the job and very seriously more than once and more than his siblings ever needed to know.
Discipline was an important aspect of their job, but patience as well. Rhys tended to lack in that area, so he made up for it in other ways. His style was methodical and not very speedy although with a handful of Curse Breakers he was used to working with then they had their system, and it was faster. Though it depended if Renfri was yelling at him for being too slow and egging him on as well, but he was used to that. Rhys sipped his whiskey but almost spit it out as he chuckled. Yes, flying spears—his favorite trap to run into because it was actually scary enough to give one an adrenaline rush. ”I still don’t know the Egyptian’s fascination with shooting spears in every direction.” He mused, every region seemed to have something that was common whether it was walls, quicksand, fire, and even water. ”I don’t know why tombs have so many sharp objects—sometimes I prefer the caves.” In the Middle East a lot of artifacts were in lost caves though the tricky part was getting to them at times. Still that had its own set of challenges.
Rhys thought about every scratch, broken bone or concussion he could remember over the years though he still thought of one incident that had been rather terrifying for him. He sat back in his chair and crossed his arms. ”You ever get hit by a curse?” Rhys was more curious, though they all shared stories of their injuries nobody ever actually brought up all of them, and he knew that if it was a sensitive topic then he would leave it alone. Just as there were only a few people who knew this particular story of his and he also supposed it happened a lot more than people ever talked about. Rhys figured it might scare the recruits if the knew right away what horrible and awful curses waited for them in these caves, crypts and tombs. The stuff they didn’t teach you in Defense Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts.

If you were a curse breaker, chances are you had been injured at some point in time. The death and retirement rate were also fairly high. It was, in no way, a safe career. Some newly graduated kids failed to see that. They either needed to wise up quick and get serious, or find another career. You would think it would be just that simple. It was also good to have new recruits travel and work with different experienced curse breakers. They would learn new techniques and different methods. ”Still, it wouldn’t be a good year if someone didn’t fall down a shaft.” Jasper laughed and nodded in agreement. It did seem like there was always at least one recruit that fell down some hidden area, and was left to be rescued by their seniors. It happened every year, without fail. And, once the older curse breakers learned of this statistic, some could only laugh as they witnessed it first hand. Jasper did this on occasion, he had always helped the kid out, but sometimes couldn't help himself. "The year that doesn't happen, will be the year we all burn. You've just gotta be wary of the ones with spears at the bottom." Again, had happened. Some kid fell. Luckily jasper was quick with his wand, levitating the kid shorty before impact. He didn't breath until the kids was back on solid ground. These were the terrifying, and gory details that many chose not to share with their friends and family.
Rhys mentioned the Egyptians with shooting spears and Jasper chuckled. "Its not just the Egyptians. I found quite a few in Italy too. It was around the time of the Roman empire, so they potentially took the idea from Egypt." Awe the random bits of knowledge that curse breakers had to have. It was one thing to know your local and world history, but it was totally different when you were apart of what they had created, living and interacting with their designs. Jasper nodded in amused agreement. "Caves certainly have less trapdoors and holes for sharp objects to come out." he mused. "But I felt like caves had double the curses in them then tombs with traps." So, in that argument, it was a matter or preference. Did you prefer to keep an eye out for traps, leavers and curses, or the peril of getting to the area, and then mostly curses, with much less traps. Both were dangerous.
Jasper took another drink. ”You ever get hit by a curse?” He was wondering when this would come up. He set down his glass and took a deep breath. Curses were no laughing matter, especially to him. But as Rhys was still in the career, Jasper felt like it was his duty to share this information. Curse Breakers always tended to share their war stories, and show off their scars. But Jasper rarely brought up the times that he had been hit by a curse. He leaned forward, and lowered his voice. Curses weren't something you talked lightly about, especially in public places. It didn't matter if the curse was from a wand or an item, ancient or recent. "A couple of times. It wasn't fun, I'll tell you that." Each time had been different, but all equally horrible. "The last one put me in a coma and ended my career." The other curses didn't seem to have lasting affects. He was helped quickly and everything went back to normal. But this last time was different. No one could have predicted how powerful that curse could have been. And no one could have predicted how he would still be affected by it.

Curse Breaking as an interesting combination of brain and brawn, he always respected his colleagues for their skills and their loyalties. Much like Aurors did their own, he supposed. Though Rhys knew Aurors had a chip on their shoulders typically and if you had one this field you ended up injured rather quickly versus by an accident. Rhys nodded, there were always the pits with spears lining the bottom and with other various creatures such as scorpions or snakes even. Still, it seemed to prove good luck to have a new recruit fall into one and if they were lucky there was nothing at the bottom and Rhys would let them sit there for a few minutes longer than was necessary for a couple of reasons. First, so he could calm himself down by this minor inconvenience and second so they maybe would learn to watch where they were going and stepping at all times. ”Well, they have to learn one way or another.” He mused out loud. It actually wasn’t a job that would span the entirety of one’s life, and Rhys knew after seven years that within the next five years he would either be injured, retire voluntarily or worse. He hoped not though, he couldn’t imagine doing anything else with his life so he was really in denial over the trend.
”Yea, I suppose you’re right.” Rhys drank more whiskey. ”Rome seemed to have a lot more stuff underground, I had at least one new recruit who couldn’t handle the dark but I’m sure you saw that too.” Rhys remembered that Jasper had preferred to stay in Italy and Rhys could have moved to a specific part of the world and focused on work there but he enjoyed the traveling and the flexibility to go home. Well, home being where his family was versus a specific place—he’d never had a home. ”Caves are more interesting, but I’ve gotten my fair share of curses in them.” Rhys remembered a couple particularly haunting times but he had just counted his blessings afterwards that he was able to return to work and not forced into an early retirement as his friends had. Still, he was only ever troubled by some of the missing memories he had but then again it had all happened so fast.
Jasper took a moment to respond to him, he had asked out of a general curiosity but also, he wondered if he would share what happened. Rhys never made it a habit to gossip, having been the subject of much himself it wasn’t something he was interested in. He knew Renfri’s story as they were longtime friends and Rhys still wanted to punch the man in the face that let it happen, if not do worse things. Plus, there was an intellectual curiosity, had a specific counter-curse not been shared to his partner that day Rhys might have bled to death in a cave in the Middle East that day. Rhys nodded, it was hard thing to walk away for one’s beloved career, let alone involuntarily. He paused a moment, ”Curses seem to be worse than all the flying spears, moving walls or other traps in place.” Rhys spoke in a mostly lowered voice. ”There’s a lot you can’t train for.” Rhys didn’t probe further, some curses had lingering effects and some were cleared right up with the appropriate counter-curses as had been his case. But he still worried about the day that his sister’s and brother might get another call or another letter saying he was in St. Mungo’s again.

Jasper had loved his time as a curse breaker. It was a balancing act. You needed knowledge of spells, hexes, curses, history, culture, and any other tidbit of information that you could have. But all that knowledge was useless without the physical strength, discipline and reflexes in order to simply survive. Matching all that with a group of loyal curse breakers, led to a brotherhood or sorts. But it was clear that new recruits weren't simply welcomed into their brotherhood. One had to earn their spot by proving themselves during training and after. Not just anybody could become a curse breaker. And high marks meant little once you were out in the field. It was inevitable that one or two would fall into a hole when they started. The real test came after it had happened. What did they do? Did they learn from it? Would the leave or grow and adapt? "If you cant adapt, you shouldn't be a cure breaker" He reflected on his experience. Curse breaking was a young persons game. The older you got the higher your chances were. If you were smart you'd leave before anything happened. If you were lucky, you'd get injured and forced into a retirement like Jasper and Renfri. And if you weren't lucky or smart? Death was the only thing that weighted for those to stubborn to see the truth in front of them.
Jasper spent most of his time working in Greece and Italy. He had seen it all. The conversation moved to Rome, one of his specialties. "Definitely more underground, and tight quarters." Like the other man said, some couldn't handle the dark. "I've seen it all. Claustrophobic, scared of the dark, scared of spiders, the list goes on and on. Makes me wonder what these kids think curse breaking really is." Jasper was usually the one to teach someone new about the area that he mostly worked in. He had become more of an expert since most everyone else wondered and went form place to place. Rhys claimed that he found more interest in caves, but also had run into quite the number of curses. Some curses were mild, easily managed, but still did managed. While the ones you really wanted to be cautious of those that you could never truly break. That was the danger of their job. It wasn't easy to know what kind of curse. Sometimes it came down to trial and error. An experienced curse breaker could figure it out carefully, but even then, sometimes accidents happened. Jasper was just glad that he hadn't been alone the times that curses had hit him.
The former curse breaker didn't often speak of the times he had been it by a curse. None of them were pleasant. And while arrows, spears and moving walls were factors and told with amusement, nothing seemed to kill the mood more than talking about what it was like to be cursed. He also found that many younger people, just starting the job were often scared off by the thought of actually being cursed by some ancient relic. Jasper hadn't been naive, he knew that he wasn't immortals. But nothing brought you down faster than getting cursed and waking up a number of months later having no job. ”Curses seem to be worse than all the flying spears, moving walls or other traps in place.” Jasper shook his head "Yea, and each one is unique. That's why it's important to have someone close. That's the only reason I'm here now. For all I know that last curse could have ended everything." His voice soft, his words solemn. He knew that Rhys struggled working with some people, but it was like that for a reason. "Some curses stick around, and the bank doesn't deal with damaged curse breakers" He uttered as he downed the rest of the contents of his glass.

Renfri and Jasper were not the only Curse Breakers that Rhys had known over the years that had been injured but so severely that they were forced to retire, it was never an easy topic to talk about but he hoped that his credit with Jasper as a friend all these years would help him. Especially since Rhys still had his career intact, but it was never his intention to rub that point in anyone’s face. The tone had grown a bit solemn now, it was funny to talk about the younger ones falling down shafts or even more serious incidents such as cave-ins or sinkholes in the desert, but curses were never funny. Rhys thought about the somehow incredibly faint scar he had on his chest from his own experience, it wasn’t as noticed as his werewolf bite in terms of magical scars, but he’d been incredibly lucky.
He nodded in total agreement. Rhys was picky who he worked with usually because some people annoyed him but after a few severe injuries he was picky because of those experiences. He drank more whiskey and set the glass down on the table and shook his head a bit, ”I know all these counter-curses after all these years and I just hope every time I’m out there I never have to actually use them.” His tone was serious, he’d seen some injuries over the years with widely various results and he just never wanted to be the one that had to walk into the bank and speak to legal about what happened and what curse hit one of them this time that nobody was prepared for. Rhys looked at Jasper, while Rhys wasn’t privy to the details of what happened he knew it had been serious when he’d heard that Jasper had been in a coma and it had even frightened him some. Weren’t they just drinking the last holiday season together and laughing and suddenly he wasn’t sure if his friend was going to survive?
It had been the same with Renfri, he’d been in a different country when it had happened and so the news had taken some time to reach him but he’d kicked himself for not being there to have her back in that case as he normally might have been. ”Well, fortunately it didn’t.” Rhys commented, he knew that his perspective as a still employed Curse Breaker might have not been appreciated and Merlin knew what hole he would have drunk himself deep in if he was ever forced to retire at this point in his life but Jasper was alive and training the future generations now. ”The bank only wants its gold, I’m not sure how much they care about any of us.” They were pawns for the greedy goblins but Rhys told himself the adventure was worth it, learning and seeing new things and not having to only read about it in a book or see the artifacts in a museum. "Even when I was last injured they just wanted to know if I could work again."

Talking about being cursed wasn't easy for Jasper. But he would much rather talk about it with a friend and fellow curse breaker. Rhys fit into both of those. There was a genuine fear that a student would ask a similar question, and he wasn't sure of he was prepared to tell someone so young about the horrors that he had faced. But he did know that he should talk about it. He had always been taught to only show the shiny good stuff by his parents, especially to others. The bad stuff was always hidden. Some habits were just hard to break.
”I know all these counter-curses after all these years and I just hope every time I’m out there I never have to actually use them.” Jasper nodded. It was good, some younger agents didn't know all of them. Some had never needed to use them, especially the less common or more complex ones. But sometimes that wasn't enough. Sometimes it was. "Good, it's also important that you make sure that those your with know them too." It was difficult to counter-curse yourself while being affected by a curse. Curses didn't just die or fade, they had to be broken, and even then, some still left scars - visible or not.
”Well, fortunately it didn’t.” Apart of the man dropped, he looked into Rhys' eyes and shook his head "Not completely" He admitted with a broken voice. It hadn't been something that he had fully verbalized since he arrived at Hogwarts. It wasn't easy to admit, but he knew that it was still there. During his waking hours he could normally forget about the incident, and live a normal life, but sometimes he caught something in the corner of his eye. But mostly, it came to him at night. Terrors would fill his dreams until he was forced awake with a cold sweat covering his body. After that, sleep seemed impossible for the rest of the night. Sometimes he would drink, but mostly she would transform and roam the halls, he felt safer, like nothing could harm him. He knew that it was silly, but it helped.
Mentioning that the bank wanted the gold lifted some spirits as a slight smile cracked on his face "Goblin and wizard relations are better, but still strained." he admitted, though many curse breakers had fairly good professional relationships with the goblins at the bank, there was still tension there, that much was obvious.

People assumed that Aurors or Hit Wizards or those Ministry Law Enforcement jobs were the only jobs that ever-created trauma for magical folk, and that simply wasn’t true. The image of Curse Breaking as adventuring off across the world and you just walked into a tomb, picked up the gold and magical artifacts and brought it back to a bank so it would go into a museum was the version written for children’s stories. It was so much more than that and a lot of was difficult to talk about but if there was someone that Rhys knew he could ever talk to about it then it would be someone who had also gone through it. There was an understanding, no judgment and support. They’d had to build that support system themselves and not everyone was part of it or willing to be part of it or suitable even, Rhys had five or less people he trusted unconditionally in this field and the rest not so much.
”I’m just glad someone else knew them first or…” Rhys shook his head, while his own nightmares were primarily about the same thing this popped up now and then in the rotation. ”Lets just say, I really hope I never have to use some of them.” Rhys put his glass back down on the table and looked at Jasper, he’d heard of curses that were different, darker and more dangerous and they each had different side effects. It was a liability for the bank which explains Jasper now teaching at Hogwarts versus Renfri’s experience. Fortunately, Rhys hadn’t yet run into anything that had added to his already list of lingering symptoms from his own childhood traumas and everything was dealt with and more or less fixed. Rhys knew that prying in most situations never really helped but talking sometimes did. ”You alright Jas?” They’d worked together and studied together, but with the amount of Curse Breakers now teaching at Hogwarts it was also fair to think that he might already have someone he could talk to.
Rhys drank more whiskey, that was the other risk of the job that was less acknowledged is that curse breakers were treated as disposable items to the Goblins at times and there wasn’t much to be done about that if they wanted to keep whatever wizard-goblin relationships intact. ”Still doesn’t mean they like us.”

The truth of curse breaking was that it was a dangerous career. If a person were to come across someone claiming to be a curse breaker, but also claiming never to have gotten injured while working...they were either brand new just off the Hogwarts Express, or a liar. Jasper had found that the best people to share your stories, and get more than projected sympathy was to talk to another curse breaker. They were the only ones who could truly understand. Curse breakers were the only ones who knew what it was like to enter a tomb, and find traps, and break curses on never before seen treasures. Curse breakers could truly empathies with another, giving full support. Not every one was close to the other, bonds were built over time and through experience. Personalities clicked and bonds were strengthened as each job passed.
Counter curses were taught at Hogwarts, but Jasper never understood the importance of them until he went out into the field. ”Lets just say, I really hope I never have to use some of them.” Jasper gave a chuckle "Everyone feels that way" There were dangerous things out there, some nightmares hidden, barrier, with hopes of never being seen. It was the job of a curse breaker to unearth the ancient unknown, and break the cures. Sometimes it didn't work out that way. Jasper stared at his glass, lost in his memories. He was broken out of the haunting reverie at Rhys' voice. ”You alright Jas?” He looked up, coming back to the present "Huh? Oh.....I'm alright I guess." He paused, looking at the man. They had been friends long enough. Rhys knew that wasn't the truth. But he had said it so many times, it was easier to say than what he was really going through. "Actually, not really. That cures kind of messed me up some..." He trailed off. His voice catching a little. He took a hard swallow more alcohol. He could afford to get drunk tonight.
The relationship that curse breakers had with the goblins was different to each persons. But once one got damaged, and could no longer perform their duties fully, they were tossed out. "Some seem friendlier than others, but no, I don't think they really like us." he chuckled, pulling himself out of some darkness. It would return later, that was for sure.

Rhys continued to look at Jasper, he’d spent enough time with the man that while Rhys didn’t have any special talents reading other people, he knew everything wasn’t alright. But, there were a lot of factors to it, maybe teaching was more stressful than entering a tomb that might kill you in some gruesome way or just the void left by having to leave your dream job. But he could see him, thinking and unfocused. Much as Rhys got when he was stuck in his own head about some particular issue. But then, there it was. Rhys paused. Despite their friendship he still didn’t know how long Jasper would let this conversation go on this particular topic. In a way Rhys could relate, he thought about how hard it had been to open up to Si when discussing the side effects of that potion, it had been such personal things he’d had to discuss but it got easier with time. Still, he’d heard of some interesting curses that older Curse Breakers had encountered and some that followed them the rest of their lives, he just hoped it wasn’t one of those.
”What kind of curse was it?” Rhys had a slight look of concern on his face, what he had found was that traumatic events earlier in life were easier to handle since they just essentially became a part of you and your identity versus later in life—that was something he’d learned from experience so he was concerned for his friend. Plus, unlike the visible scars he held from the curses he’d had been attacked with. Those were just physical scars. Other invisible ones were more difficult to deal with. ”I don’t mean to pry, I’m just worried.” He admitted. This year had been different for everyone, the quarantine had changed things and for once Rhys wouldn’t be spending Christmas in a cave drinking cheap whiskey that could strip paint off a wall.

Being a curse breaker had transformed into the perfect job for Jasper, it had given him everything he wanted, and helped him grow. It was now gone. He didn't mine teaching. In fact, it was nice to be back at Hogwarts. Stalking the halls at nigh wasn't bad either. But he was tired. Sleep came easily to him, but staying like that didn't usually last long. His new job didn't lend him much time to ponder his predicament, or even his dreams. He took every night as they came, and preyed that he would be alert and competent the next day. Potions and coffee helped him with this. And luckily, he had worked so long as a Curse Breaker, that he didn't need a lot of sleep to get the job done. Some tombs and areas were so large and needed to get done quickly, sleeping on the floor or against a wall for a short time wasn't unheard of.
”What kind of curse was it?” The question on any good curse breakers mind. What was it and what could it do? The concern on his friend face seemed genuine. Nonetheless, Jasper felt uneasy bringing it up. It wasn't something he had really explained to many people, and with it being so fresh it was harder to bring up. But he could tell that Rhys was coming from a good place and maybe talking about it could help lessen it some how. "It's a dark ancient curse. From what I was told, and what I can tell, it's mostly gone, but parts of it still remains." He paused to take another sip of his drink. "For the most part, nothing is wrong, but then I'll catch a glimpse of something from the corner of my eye, but nothing's there. But it mostly shows at night." That was why he was out so late. He hoped that if he had enough alcohol, and went to sleep late enough, maybe it would help sort some things out. "It's hard to explain."

Rhys listened as Jasper answered his question, he’d actually almost expected him to not want to talk about it but also knew that he might if only just to spread the knowledge to him as he was still working in the field. It was a difficult question to ask, it was personal, and he knew that when he had asked it. He nodded as Jasper spoke, the ancient curses were dangerous in how they could injure or kill one of them but also dangerous in the sense that there was that lack of knowledge. It wasn’t like a simple curse that one knew the counter-curse or how to deal with symptoms. It was another risk they faced every time they stepped into something unknown and even if the curse could be successfully removed the trauma typically lingered far longer. Rhys had known older Curse Breakers when he was younger that would have probably preferred death to what they had to live with the rest of their lives.
”…I’m sorry Jas, I didn’t know.” The bank didn’t care enough about them to make injuries such public things and typically when incidents happened such as with Jasper or Renfri other people knew because they were told by the source or by another friend. So Renfri had told Rhys what happened when all he had known was that something had happened. ”Any chance of doing research or something?” The quarantine had given Rhys a ton of time to research, but with something ancient it might be in vain. Jasper continued to explain the aftereffects and it explained the late hour and that was something Rhys could relate with. As with his own demons. ”Like….it never leaves you?” Rhys spoke quietly, preferring to look at the table at this point. His own nightmares, and as vivid as they got because of the Aware Wolf potion always left him with that feeling like Fenrir was just around the corner. Eyes on him and a slight chill would go through his spine until he looked, and nothing was there. It was a haunting feeling. He’d never mentioned them to him before, not that he didn’t trust him, but it’d never come up.

Jasper wasn't the biggest fan of talking about the incident, or it's after effect of it. But it did feel good to talk about it. And if anything, another curse breaker would understand. The longer you were in the business, the more likely you were to have gotten physically injured in many different ways, and maybe even get hit with a curse yourself. It was good for Rhys to be aware of curses like the one that hit Jasper, maybe then he could be better prepared for the dangerous job. Every one on the job needed to know the dangers of being a curse breaker. Just because you were experienced, that didn't make you immune.
Jasper shrugged when the other man said that he didn't know. That didn't surprise Jasper. He had been quite private about it, and the bank wasn't forthcoming on other's injuries, just their work status. He mentioned the potential of doing research and Jasper had to think about it. "I guess I could research some when I have some time" He shrugged, it wasn't something that was easy to do, but he had a perspective that very few others would. Jasper gave a weary chuckle "Sometimes I can forget about it, but, yea, it's always there." Sometimes it was a level of how much power he gave it. But it was different, it was always lurking there in the shadows. There were just situations where it was easier to ignore. After finishing off his drink he looked sad at the younger man. "Sorry, guess I brought the mood down."
