we're the masters of our own fate we're the captains of our own souls
October 15, 2025 @nixie
They both laughed at the memory of the, at the time, new recruit that had accompanied them to a job. At first there had been panic as he had just disappeared and then they realized what happened and after some careful investigation they realized that the particular part of the tomb they had been in wasn’t cursed or had traps or anything of the sort and it had taken them some time to get him out because of two reasons. First Rhys had been incredibly pissed and had to talk a short walk to cool off per Nixie’s request—rather she forced him for the safety of the new recruit and second, they let him sit there for a little while. ”I think it was Billy.” The name rang a bell, but it wasn’t an uncommon name either, Rhys shook his head, and he laughed a bit more. ”Merlin, I was so mad.” He recalled. Why the head Curse Breaker insisted on sending new recruits with Rhys was beyond him, he tended to be more on the impatient side rather like those that had taught him. He thought about his travels and even constant visits to the bank the past part of the year and he shook his head no. ”No, I’d recognize him.”
He shrugged and drank more of his whiskey, even to this day he hadn’t quite figured out how it had happened and he’d said as much when having to report back as they did with new recruits and their progress. The kid had been smart and knew what he was talking about but rather didn’t know what he was doing otherwise, much better suited for a research job instead of in the field. ”Honestly, I haven’t got a clue—he just…disappeared.” Rhys couldn’t say it was the first time anything like this had happened, many people wanted to be in the field but couldn’t cut it. Just like when people wanted to be Aurors and couldn’t pass the stealth and detection portion of their tests, they needed to be well rounded. He brows furrowed as they did when he was thinking, and then he shrugged it off. ”Honestly, I don’t know why they give me new recruits to train every year. One of you always has to stop me from hexing them.” He’d tried to argue once that they could have hexed one of them and said it was a tomb accident but he’d been stopped by cooler heads.

This was one of the best parts of catching up with a co-worker. Getting to share in the fun memories. The chance to relive fun and memorable times. Both laughed at the memory of this poor new recruit. But, in Nixie's defense, he had probably picked the wrong career to begin with. Maybe he had acclimated to it, maybe not. She remembered him being gone. She heard the surprised sound that he had made, turned back to look and he was gone. It was funny in hindsight, but quite serious during the actual event. Losing a greenie on their first tomb didn't look good on paper. She remembered Rhys' temper rising, and the fiery read head had demanded that he take a walk to calm down. After handling that, she worked on puzzle solving while the poor guy had to, as she had stated then "sit and think about what you have done"
He had confirmed that the kids name was Billy, though he didn't seem completely sure about it. She couldn't help but keep laughing as he mentioned how mad he was. She remembered how angry he was. But luckily Nixie never let her height deter her from doing what she needed. "I'm glad that they sent him with both of us, rather than just you. Can you imagine?" She said, as a new wave of laughter came. She wondered if he was still with Gringotts, and neither of them had seen him recently. "Maybe that's a good thing. Let's hope he found a new career path" She said as she finished her drink. Waiving down the bartender to request another.
Even after careful thought about the incident, it seemed like that would just have to remain a mystery. They had both been doing their jobs, scoping out the area and seeing what they could find, and figuring out what they could do. That was when it had happened. There just came a time when you had to let them learn my making the mistakes, and that he had done. ”Honestly, I don’t know why they give me new recruits to train every year. One of you always has to stop me from hexing them.” Nixie knew that was true. She had been given some new recruits, but not as often. It was most likely because he was more senior. "When the time comes around again, see if they can put me with the two of you. It'll be fun to work with you again." She raised her glass, as to toast a potential better future with the new ones coming in.

Curse Breaking may be full of adventure, treasure and danger but there were also moments that would even leave Rhys laughing. There was comradery, and sort of a brotherhood—he supposed it was natural since you wanted to trust them to have your back when entering the unknown. Someone to block traps that were set off or known counter-curses and healing spells. Rhys trusted them and that was a huge wall in itself to climb with him and so with his friends he trusted he felt comfortable. Still, he shook his head slightly as he was remembering how pissed off, he had been at what he considered something so stupid. Nixie always stood up to him, as much as her small frame let her, and he’d back off. It had been the first time and he knew it wouldn’t be the last. Though it tended to embolden some of the younger and more arrogant recruits. If little Nixie could stand up to Rhys, then couldn’t they? Again, he nodded his head in complete agreement, that might have gone very differently had that new recruit not had someone looking out for them in more ways than one. ”Honestly, I would have been tempted to leave him there.” He said with a shrug and more whiskey.
”I still remember, damn I don’t remember his name either…” Rhys thought for a second, ”Thomas or something…..Anyway, he tried to argue with me—“ Rhys paused for effect because it was still so funny to him. ”And stood up to me because he saw you do it.” Rhys ended up putting that new recruit in his place with some classic intimidation and he would have restored to dueling him if he hadn’t backed down which Rhys would not have lost. Rhys chuckled again, there were so many different personalities he ran into in this career though many of them made great Curse Breakers. So, he didn’t quite understand the rhyme or reason for it all the time, but he still personally looked for specific traits, discipline being one of them since a lot of patience and focus was required. If you took Rhys’ temper out of the equation, he was a focused person, just if you ignored his anger and his fondness for whiskey.
He was twenty-five now, with many more years than the younger ones so they had started making him train them just as others such as Jasper and Cas had taught him a thing or two. At first, he had actually been eager and figured he would ‘pass it on’ but his patience had quickly grown thin for it. ”I’d like that.” He responded. Lifting his half empty glass and gently touching it to hers. It was a much better time if two out of the three got along plus a lot seemed to be shifting now that more Curse Breakers had retired in one way or another. He drank more whiskey and paused again to think, the year seemed to have flown by and so much had happened despite him being home. ”You know, even though I missed working it was a nice break.” He admitted, for the second half of the previous year he’d worked more than he had in a long time. Back to back jobs just to keep his mind occupied from his pain of losing his brother. ”I think I was working myself toward burnout.” It wasn’t where anyone ever wanted to be, burnt out. It led to mistakes and mistakes led to injuries and other unfortunate circumstances. It wasn’t something he talked about often, but Nixie was a close friend of his, so he didn’t mind bringing it up.

It was no secret the Curse Breaking was a dirty, rough, and often times thankless job. But when you took a look at it, from inside the trenches, you saw that the people great. While you often had to put your life in their hands, and the moments were so suspenseful, even breathing seemed too disruptive. There were also times of pure bliss. Stories and moments where you simply just had to be there, and even looking back on them left your sides sore from laughter. There was defiantly a special bond that curse breakers had. Even if they wouldn't normally mix outside of work, you still felt a connection with them, because they knew what it was like. Nixie was one to always give someone the benefit of the doubt, but once trust was list, it was near impossible to get it back. She was glad that she trusted most of her co-workers fully.
Nixie wondered what would have really happened if she hadn't been there. ”Honestly, I would have been tempted to leave him there.” as he shrugged, the girl laughed. It could have become tragic, but it hadn't. All in all, it was obviously better that she had been there. Rhys then told of a time when someone did stand up to the werewolf, simply because she had. Nixie was a spitfire in a small package. While there was a small amount of pride with that, But what many of them didn't understand, was that standing up to someone like that worked mostly because of her relationship with the person already. The girl gave a hearty augh. She knew that she was one of the smallest cures breakers there was currently. "How'd that go over?" Still laughing, she just had to know what happened. It took guts to stand up to a more experienced curse breaker, and a werewolf on top. "Did you make him cry?" The girl found that it was often that many young recruits would muster up just enough courage, but after a moment or two, they would just as quickly back off. Nixie found that it was very important to know when to stand your ground and when not to. But if you were to stand up, it was important to stick to your guns no matter what happened after.
Nixie was only a few years younger than Rhys, and so, it was common that the bank would give newer agents to the more experienced curse breaker, and then Nixie would often get someone second hand. Partnering with someone newer, usually meant that they had already been trained, they just needed practice by that point. She happily offered to join in on some training. Maybe someone would try standing up to the man again, because they saw how he and Nixie interacted, but she really liked the idea of working with him again. and from the sound of it, he did too. Their glasses clanked, toasting at the possibility. She put her glass to her lips and dank to the moment. ”You know, even though I missed working it was a nice break.” The girl nodded "It is nice to step back sometimes. Just wish it was in shorter intervals" It was true, the break had been nice. It had given the girl the time to relax a bit more than she normally did. But Nixie had a nomadic soul. She couldn't stay in one place for long. That was why this job was perfect for her. "Burnout is never good." Even she would admit that there was such a thing as working too much. People worked hard for many reasons, but resting was important. "I think we all could do better about remembering to care for ourselves too." That was mostly meant for her. She needed to be careful not to constantly go from one adrenalin high to the next.

we're the masters of our own fate we're the captains of our own souls
October 15, 2025 @nixie
Rhys was smart, he was good at his job and responsible but when his temper or wrath was unleashed—well that was almost a whole different person. There were sides of him he pushed down on purpose to be in control but sometimes….something or someone would get under his skin and there wasn’t anything he could do about it. His friends knew this about him, but he didn’t want to be anyone’s responsibility. He still remembered that recruit, that kid who walked up to him with his chest puffed out as much as his scrawny frame could because Rhys had ordered him to scout somewhere and he was tired of doing ‘grunt’ work. Rhys had been rather amused. The grunt work was important to learning the basics but also Rhys himself hadn’t wanted to do it. There had been a third Curse Breaker present that time as well who had watched with some trepidation since he didn’t Rhys all that well either.
Rhys couldn’t help but smile when she asked him for further explanation, it was still something funny to him. ”Oh, he walked up with his chest all puffed out because I gave him grunt work to do and he was somebody’s son or cousin or something.” He reminisced, drinking the rest of the whiskey in his glass and nodding to the bartender for another one. ”So, I may have threatened him a little.” Rhys couldn’t remember his exact wording but he’d stepped up to him with his chest puffed out and Rhys wasn’t a scrawny man and he’d put a dark and serious expression on his face and even his eyes had ceased to be blue for a moment. That usually did the trick or at least made them nervous, though he had been so annoyed that he would have certainly put him in his place one way or another. Regardless, it did tend to confuse people when they thought of him as such a serious man but his best friends knew a gentler side of him. The reason that Nixie usually was able to get him to back down was because they were good friends, but he also respected her.
The bartender came back with another glass of whiskey and he nodded to say thank you, and he drank some of it. Generally, he had enough to help him feel somewhat calm or normal but could still apparate. Still didn’t stop his friends or siblings from commenting on it from time to time. Rhys nodded in agreement, a break was nice, but he didn’t usually like them even when he was exhausted because then it was just him and his thoughts and that wasn’t somewhere, he liked to be very often. ”Yea, you’re right.” He thought about it for a moment, self-care was so different for all of them. ”Maybe I can split my time with more research.” He thought out loud, but the thought of leaving the field for half the time didn’t sit well with him either.

Nixie had full respect for Rhys. He was one of her closest friends, especially in the circles of work. But she knew all too well how much of a temper he could have. And while the girl much preferred to work alone, if she had to have a partner, she would pick Rhys over many of the other current curse breakers. She never worried about his temper when it was just the two of them. But when there was a third, unknown factor, that was when she knew to watch out for the signs. Through experience, she knew that he would never hurt her. So, if she felt like he was ready to go after some poor, unsuspecting co-worker, she would happily step in the way. The girl was stubborn, so once she made the decision to get between them, she was going to stick her ground. Not that she felt that she had to watch over him or "baby" him, she would much rather work through the puzzles. But team mates fighting just wasn't good for anyone.
To the girls pleasure, Rhys gave more detail in regards to the young man who tried to stand up to him, all because of her. All ending in ”So, I may have threatened him a little.” The girl belted out a loud laugh, disturbing some patrons around. She didn't notice, it was much too funny. "Sorry to make you do your job. Once your underground, no one cares who you're related to." That was one of her favorite things. In the wizarding world, there were some who looked down on her. And that was all because she came from a non magical family. In her opinion, that shouldn't matter at all. What was more important, was how well you did what you had to do. She knew that Rhys had similar treatment, all because of his surname. She had rumors of some scary man by that name. But Rhys, while he had his flaws, wasn't a bad person. Maybe she was bias, they were friends after all. Nixie never felt afraid of the large man, in fact, she often felt safer when he was around.
Nixie finished her drink as the bartender came back around and she gave a sweet smile for him to refill hers while he was there. The man magicked over another class for her and she too nodded her thanks to the man. He agreed to her comment about taking things easy, it was an important reminder to all Curse Breakers. Nixie had found that most of them were like these two, they all loved to work, and get out on as many jobs as they could. He mentioned doing more research, which sounded boring to Nixie, but they all found different things relaxing. She took a sip of her whiskey as an idea dawned on her "Hey," she said, seemingly out of the blue "You should come over to my parents sometime." She lit up at the idea "Great Irish home cooking, as long as you don't mind my nosey mum."

we're the masters of our own fate we're the captains of our own souls
October 15, 2025 @nixie
Rhys tended to intimate some of the recruits with his general demeanor and that he didn’t speak to them a whole lot at first, and if he didn’t like one of them, he wasn’t very shy about it. However, the ones he felt had potential or were putting their whole heart into learning and understanding he tended to open up more and at least faster than other ones. He’d befriend Nixie very quickly that way and the small age gap made him feel like he had sort of a younger sister at work with him, and it was comforting like that. Another reason he would back down if she stood up to him, though sometimes he could take some arguing to back down and it fascinated other Curse Breakers. His whole composure had been carried over from his school days but he’d trained under more senior Curse Breakers who were much the same and he’d been put in his place a few times until he’d really learned and then he’d started to grow up from that brooding eighteen year old he’d been. ”Well, grunt work needs to get done one way or another and if you can do that then you can learn other things. “ He thought out loud, staring off into a random part of the bar for a bit.
”You weren’t difficult like that.” Rhys reminisced, he hadn’t been a senior Curse Breaker then but he’d been there for some of her training until they both had a couple more years under their belts and he could either do solitary jobs or partnered. Rhys had only been difficult in some of his attitude but never his discipline. And he also liked how more or less he was treated the same as everybody else with the same expectations and in the end the same goals. He wasn’t in this field for the glory or even the treasure, well the treasure was a nice bonus. Really it had been ‘plan B’ but it had turned into a passion. He’d found out his brother had died while he was working, and that still stung to him. Finding out your sibling had died in a damn letter, Renfri had been there when he’d found out and Nixie had worked with him the very next job. They had helped in their own way, mostly by letting him work but he had truly worked back to back jobs from that springtime until he’d come back home to visit in February.
Rhys looked up and returned from his thoughts when she spoke again, her drink now refreshed, and he listened curiously. A home cooked meal? The idea was very foreign to Rhys, but he smiled back. ”That would be wonderful.” Despite his father still being alive, he always thought of himself as an orphan. From what he’d been told and heard Fenrir would probably never acknowledge him unless he joined his savage werewolf pack and that was never going to happen. He chuckled a bit at her comment about her mum, he had grown used to them from his friends’ parents over the years at least the ones that were willing to meet him. ”Won’t they give you a hard time for bringing a boy home though?” Again, it wouldn’t be the first time assumptions had been made.

Nixie was always one to put her full head and heart into her work. She quickly found that this gained her respect as a curse breaker. Now having worked the job for several years, she understood why. It was also because of this that Rhys had started to open up with her more. They soon became close friends. She grew up with many rough and rambunctious older brothers, and while different, he reminded her a lot of them. Her comfort only grew as they spent time with her. This was another reason why she felt so comfortable standing up to him.
"Here here," She said in agreement. Being a curse breaker was far from glamorous. But new recruits were sold on the adventure, and the finding of treasure. But no one seemed to tell them that in order to find the treasure, there were plenty of little, less desirable things that you needed to do in order to get to the treasure, and have the adventure. ”You weren’t difficult like that.” Nixie beamed, sitting upright in her chair. "Awe, thank you. I'd like to think I was easy to work with" She tried her best to be a good team player, and to enjoy her time, while still soaking up as much knowledge as she could get. She remembered working some early jobs with Rhys. He was quite moody, but she always tried to see the best in people, until they let her down. "You weren't so bad yourself" she chuckled. Because of his attitude, he wasn't always the easiest to work with, but he was new, young, and he did a good job. He never let her down. Their relationship had only grown since then.
She knew that he had gone through some tough times, and had taken as many jobs as he was able to. The job of a curse breaker wasn't one that you could do half heartedly. You had to put everything you had into it, which meant that it was the perfect way to distract yourself from something you really didn't want to think about.
She invited him to sometime come home for a good meal. In all honestly, it was the only time that the girl had a decent meal. When returning home after a prolonged period of time, her mother always made a point to mention that she was too thin, and made a comment such as "when was the last time you ate?" and other comments like that. He seemed appreciative of the offer and she smiled. though he did make a good point about it.” Won’t they give you a hard time for bringing a boy home though?”
The girl thought about the question. "Probably, but that's my family for you. How else do you think I got such a good thin, and so good at dodging things?" She chuckled "I have four older brothers. And plus, once mum hears that you work with me, she'll assume that your diet is much like mine while out on the field." She drank some of her whiskey and proudly stated "Cheap take out and junk food. She'll fire up her oven and cook a feast."

we're the masters of our own fate we're the captains of our own souls
October 15, 2025 @nixie
Rhys gave Nixie a look, you weren’t so bad yourself. But, he knew how he could be and how he was perceived sometimes. He had remembered the look on a new recruit’s face when Rhys had burst out laughing at something Renfri and Nixie had both said when they were at the bank once and the kid had just seemed shocked that Rhys was anything other than serious. But he did smile and laugh in the right company, only few were allowed behind most of his walls. Typically, with the newer Curse Breakers if after a handful of jobs, they didn’t’ get along with Rhys it probably wasn’t going to happen that they would ever be friends. Not to mention the occasional small fight he would usually end up in if someone commented on who he was because of his name. These incidents would never help him be the head Curse Breaker by any means but not that he wanted to particularly. Rhys never saw himself in that type of leadership role that took him away from the field, he didn’t want to sit at a desk.
Nixie paused to think at his question, he knew they gave her a hard time for not settling down and he was sure if he’d had a family like that he would get the same questions considering his age so he hoped it was clear communication wise there. Though Rhys can’t say it had never crossed his mind, he wasn’t blind to the women around him and Nixie was pretty, but he was content with their good friendship as it were. Just as many of his friends happened to be women but after all these years, they were all just friends. Though the thought of four older brothers staring at their sister’s friend seemed a bit intimidating, he knew how he was with his younger sisters so he could relate and hoped it wouldn’t be such a big deal. ”Well, I’ll never say no to a home-cooked meal.” Rhys smiled at her, it really did sound like a wonderful idea and it gave him a weird happy feeling, maybe because it wasn’t something that had been common in his life by any means outside of being at school.
”You sure your brothers won’t just interrogate me?” Rhys asked, he knew how he would feel about his younger sisters let alone if he was one of four brothers with a sole sister.

Many people felt like Rhys was serious, and some thought that he was scary. That was an easy first look assumption. He was large, muscular, and a werewolf. But Nixie knew that wasn't all he was. You just had to work to get past his defenses. Being who she was, Nixie had become good friends with Rhys, along with many of the other curse breakers that she worked with. Some felt like she could one day become the head curse breaker, but she dreaded that idea. She could never be in charge, and stuck at the bank. She joined this job to travel, get down and dirty, solve puzzles, and find treasures. Why would she give that up for a pay raise and a stable desk? She shuddered at the thought.
It was true that her family gave her a hard time for her life style, mainly her parents, but she wasn't going to change it just because they didn't approve. She had a number of male friends, she just didn't like them in that way. She would rather just be friends. And while she mentioned her brothers, there was a chance that not all of them would be there. Their family was close, and they often gathered for big dinners, especially when she came home. But because of the quarantine, she had been home for quite a while, so there was nothing special. But it was good for him to be aware of what he was walking into. ”Well, I’ll never say no to a home-cooked meal.” She smiled, she knew that he didn't have much, so she was positive that he would agree to the meal. Plus, her mum's cooking was really good.
He mentioned her brothers, concerned that they would just want to interrogate him, and she laughed. "If their there, they'll have questions, but if they get too far, I'll just kick them, or use a convenient shushing charm to keep them quiet." Being the only magical one in her family did have some perks. "Plus, if they learn they figure out your a werewolf, they'll have way more questions about that." It didn't have to come up, but they had plenty of questions about her magical stuff, even now.

we're the masters of our own fate we're the captains of our own souls
October 15, 2025 @nixie
Rhys didn’t have any misgivings about meeting Nixie’s family, he usually was only nervous as a habit with magical families who would hear his name and immediately their expression would change. It had been different with some of his friends’ families such as Nell, the Ollivanders and then of course his sibling’s mothers and other half-siblings. Hope had begun to form in him for some kind of acceptance, and then het met Deva but her family was adamantly opposed. He always wondered how different it might have been had they been more welcoming and would he have not let his self-doubt be his own worst enemy. Rhys paused for a moment, ”I could lead with that….if that helps.” Rhys offered, he knew how it could be awkward as most of his good friends seemed to be women and there were always the looks and the questions.
”Do they know a lot about our work?” Rhys was curious, but he also wondered if they knew the constant risk this line of work entailed, and as a brother himself he could see both sides. Rhys drank more of his whiskey. It was interesting how different they were in so many regards but were still close friends. Rhys mother and father were of magical blood—though not pure and he had been raised knowing magical things and history, but he’d never had nuclear family. Nixie was muggle born but had a gigantic family that sounded a bit chaotic but also warm and loving. ”I appreciate it though. I never really have had that kind of experience.” Rhys commented, while people knew he was Fenrir’s son a lot of people might not have known he was raised in an orphanage though generally those close to him did.
”Do they know you’re going to Rome?” He didn’t know how much Nixie told her family, if she was like him he told his sisters where he was going usually and an estimate of a time period but didn’t usually get into too many details since he didn’t want them to worry. So, Rhys usually never mentioned the tombs with spears that flew at him, moving walls and fire. In fact, the only reason they’d even found out about some of his worse injuries had been when they had been notified as per policy versus Rhys being treated locally and then going on his way.

Nixie considered herself lucky. She had a good family, and got along with them most of the time. The girl knew that there were plenty of curse breakers who left their families, or didn't really have one. She knew that Rhys struggled with his surname, with his fathers name. People in the wizarding world feared Rhys' father. From what she heard, it was for a good reason. But why fear the child? She didn't get it. She felt like everyone should be given their own chance. She also came from a completely muggle family. They only knew of the magical world because of her, and the majority of their knowledge, now, came from what she told them.
”I could lead with that….if that helps.” The girl let out a boisterous laugh. "I'll be sure to tell them about the potion you take very month. Make sure that they aren't scared of what they think they know about werewolves." Muggle media did have their own versions of things that, to Nixie, were very real. She was used to it. She got asked so many questions about it, especially after their family watched certain movies. Can you do magic if you wiggle your nose? Will you fly on your broom like a lady/ side saddle? Are vampire and werewolves real? Do vampires sparkle, or burn in the sun? Can I become a vampire/werewolf? Why can you only become a fox? The questions went on and on. She did her best to educate her family on the truths, and not the dreamt up fantasy's of muggle writers.
He asked the girl about what they knew about the worked that the two of them did, and the girl wiggled her flat hand in a non-committal way. "I've told them some. They know that we're kind of like muggle archeologists, but a little more danger put to it. Sort of like Indiana Jones, but with magic." The old muggle reference might be lost on the man, but it was the shortest explanation she could give "I keep out a lot of the dangers. They knew I've gotten hurt though. It's mostly so me mum doesn't worry night and day." The more her mother worried, the more communication she was required to have with the woman. And being ankle deep in swamp and skeletons wasn't exactly the place to stop and wright a letter.
Nixie knew that his family dynamic was much different from his and she smiled when he thanked her. "Well, maybe you can borrow my family for the night. It might be a little crazy, but it's nice" She complained about her family, often, but that didn't mean that she didn't love them. She loved them a lot, and she knew that they loved her.
He asked if she knew what her job would be in Rome and she shrugged. "They know I was hoping to be going to Rome, but I haven't told them yet. I'll probably tell them tonight or tomorrow, depending on if anyone's awake when I get home" She laughed. She wasn't a child anymore. Her parents didn't stay up waiting for her and her siblings to wander inside the house, covered in dirt and mud.

we're the masters of our own fate we're the captains of our own souls

As Rhys grew older his name became slightly less of an issue, he also wasn’t the only living spawn of Fenrir Greyback who was participating in society and not causing trouble. If anything—they were contributing quite positively. His brother worked with dragons and his sister had her name in the paper working on a potion to hopefully help other werewolves as they were, and his youngest sister was due to graduate but was a Prefect. There was still the stigma, but it was nice not being the solitary target though for his siblings he would be if needed. He wasn’t alone in that sense, there had been others in his life who had what he would call unfortunate last names and he could have done what Adrian did and use his mother’s last name and Rhys had considered that carefully but he felt there was some power in using the Greyback name and proving it wasn’t what everybody expected.
Rhys interest was piqued however, he hadn’t watched a lot of muggle media though he had seen some when he had been in America but it fascinated him what muggles thought of magical things especially because they assumed that they weren’t real. ”So, what do muggles think werewolves are? I’m curious.” Of course, he didn’t want them to think he was a danger to them or their daughter and especially with the potion his sister had developed. ”Jamie’s potion is a big step up from the Wolfsbane, I think its safer overall.” He commented, while he still had some side effects it was overall more tolerable because he was able to retain his mind during the ordeal, it sat better with him. Rhys drank more whiskey wondering about the muggle perspective, he supposed it was like the magical perspective on muggles and their culture and the things that fascinated him.
”Indiana Jones?” Rhys wasn’t familiar with the reference but maybe some famous muggle archeologist, at least he presumed considering the context. Rhys nodded, he also wanted to avoid saying something that would upset her family in terms of if they really knew how dangerous their work could be. ”So, I shouldn’t bring up Curses?” He asked, the answer was obvious, but he just wanted a verbal confirmation. The last story he wanted to tell a worried family was about the various injuries he’d gotten especially the more severe ones from curses. He’d been very fortunate he hadn’t been taken out as Jasper had but he knew he’d been very close. The entire idea though made Rhys feel a bit better, he’d been having a rough couple of years and tried to find some kind of silver lining in it all and it seemed to come from his family and friends.
”Well I’m sure they’ll have plenty of questions about that.” Rhys knew she was going to enjoy Rome and he figured he might be sent back in the near future since Jasper was retired and that had been primarily his domain and he didn’t mind the idea all as it was much more exciting a prospect than Egypt was.

From Nixie's limited knowledge, werewolves had come a long way in the past years. She personally didn't care. What a person was, wasn't nearly as important as who a person was. Being a muggle born, she was practically a nobody, and outsider in the world of magic. That's how she felt at when she was eleven. She had grown accustom to the magical ways, but still sometimes felt like an outsider. It only happened when some reference was given that anyone born into the magical world would understand, that she was unaware of.
”So, what do muggles think werewolves are? I’m curious.” Nixie had to think for a moment "Well, as you know, muggles think werewolves aren't real, therefore they change the rules depending on the writers whims." She took a drink and turned towards him "In some, they turn into a missive, ravenous creature that kills anything. The bite is often a way that someone gets turned." She paused, for a moment "Somethings seemed to have held as truth, but other movies have werewolves turn into larger versions of regular wolves, which is ridiculous. There are also very specific ways of killing them, But that's a bit morbid for how little I've had to drink" She rambled. "There's no real cure of way to subdue the beast in most media." He mentioned the potion and she nodded "Thank goodness our society is more progressive than muggle imaginations." She knew that werewolf history wasn't a kind one. But she still found many werewolves in media unfairly treated. In the media, they were often treated like ravenous beasts, which they could be without the potion. But they are often portrayed in chains or locked behind bars in order to prevent them from doing any further harm. There had to be a better way. And luckily, there was a better way. She didn't know first hand, but she did know that they had come a long way.
She wasn't suppressed when it seemed as though her muggle reference went misunderstood. He questioned the reference of Indiana Jones though he did understand her wanting to keep some things secret to them. "A popular archeologist character in Muggle movies. He always seemed to have a thrilling time. Going into tombs, dealing with dangerously characters, and collecting treasures, then avoiding more traps, usually just barely." He mentioned avoiding curse talk and she nodded "If my mum knew that I raised getting cursed on a regular basis, she'd never let me out of the house." though it was in the name, she had assured her family that, while she broke curses, she was in no danger real danger from it. Sure, they knew that there was some danger, but no more than any muggle archeologist, like her brother, or an officer of the law. But she also reminded them that she had a magical wand that helped her do things that her family used to only dream about.
She hadn't had a chance to tell her family about where she was heading next. ”Well I’m sure they’ll have plenty of questions about that.” She chuckled "There's no doubt about that, I'll also get some souvenir requests." It was common for her family to ask her to bring something home. The requests didn't always come from the same people, and sometimes it was specific, and others it wasn't.

Werewolves were so ingrained in Magical life and culture that Rhys hardly ever gave a second thought to how muggles might perceive them or anything of the sort. So, it fascinated him in the same way learning about other cultures while he was working did. Naturally, it was best that muggles continue to think they were some part of a mythology instead of actually existing, werewolf bites on muggles were not common as magical children were more the targets so they could suffer with society’s prejudices. ”Doesn’t sound all that different from what actually happens.” He commented casually, he wasn’t shy about being a werewolf or what it was like if someone asked him. Had it not been a friend he tended to leave out the gritty details that they didn’t particularly need to know. Plus, unfortunately, there were those werewolves such as his father and his “pack” that decided to act like rabid and savage animals unlike Rhys and his own siblings.
He half shrugged, ”I think things are much better now than they used to be.” He’d been acquainted with Lupin during school, and his father had been a famous figure during the last war despite his lifelong struggles with being a werewolf but also how society treated them. Rhys figured that change had come after that, albeit a bit slow though his name served as its own anchor in this case. The work that his brother and sister were doing was positive, which helped their case. She explained this Indiana Jones character to him, and he sound like he had been a Curse Breaker but without magic. Muggle archaeology he had seen first-hand in Egypt as he’d had to interact with muggles at times to reach specific sites and try to rid a tomb of curses before they entered. ”So like us but without magic?” That seemed more dangerous that their job already was and a bit ridiculous, but he kept an open mind when it came to muggle culture.
”Ok, so don’t bring up any injuries—check.” The last thing he wanted was to scare her family, even his own worried about him and they were part of the magical world. Besides, a good handful of Rhys’ injuries had been gruesome, and he didn’t care to talk about them if he didn’t have to regardless of present company. Really, the only people that might not be completely horrified would be fellow curse breakers. ”I’m sure that’s exciting for then how much you get to travel and see things.” Rhys himself enjoyed that part of the job. The only constant he ever sought out was whiskey but he’d never pass up a local beer or food and especially when he preferred Latin America though he was pulled wherever he was needed due to his experience.
