November 25, 2025 Maria sat at the edge of a bed, slipping her shirt back over her head and leaned down to slip on her shoes. She ran a hand through her hair, untangling any knots. The evening had been a blur, and Maria remembered very little of it aside from how it ended. Reaching for her jacket, a naked woman still sleeping in the bed beside her, stirred. Maria froze. But, thankfully, the woman didn't move again. Maria retrieved her jacket and slipped it on. Then, she left. No note, nothing. Maria had just needed a fix. Nothing serious or permanent. Just someone to use and discard when she was done. She'd never even caught the woman's name. Hadn't cared to know. Hadn't even given her own. Names just made things complicated. Maria was done with complicated.
It had to be a quarter past two in the morning. So early. There was a slight stumble in her step from her intoxication but she managed to stay on her feet as she walked down the sidewalk. She flagged down a cab once she reached a main street, and silently stared out the window on the car ride. She would have just apparited, but that would mean getting home sooner. She wasn't in any rush to get to that place. She'd been spending more time the normal away from home the past month. In so much that her landlord had called to check if she was alright. She'd just told him yes and hung up.
Entering her apartment she flicked the lights on and locked the door behind her. She kicked off her shoes by the door, and sighed as she reached the fridge. The place was messier then usual, Maria having not bothered to keep it clean in her absence.
As Maria reached for a bottle of wine in the fridge, her stomach growled uncomfortably. She stopped. She hadn't thought she'd drank that much tonight to get nauseous. But... maybe she had. So, she closed the fridge and decided to head to bed. She didn't bother changing aside from discarding her jacket. Just lay down on the right side of the bed, and closed her eyes.
Maria sat up with a gasp, covered in a cold sweat. It had been a few hours, at least, since she laid down. But she still felt exhausted. The nightmares were back. The ones from her seventh year. When she'd burned Viola and hallucinated for two days. It had ended up being a cruel prank, someone having slipped some kind of drug into her drink. Maria had seen things for days, all of which her greatest fears. And poor Viola had gotten in the cross hairs when she was in the thralls of the hallucinations and gotten severely burned. She moved to the bathroom and splashed cold water on her face. Leaning against the sink she stared at her reflection. Why? Why were those back? It had been... a year at least since the last time she'd had that nightmare. Had it been the drinking? She'd never had that side effect though. No, it was something else. But what?
Her stomach lurched uncomfortably again. That couldn't be the alcohol. If she'd really drank so much to be throwing up she would have been throwing up hours ago. Then what-
A very uncomfortable thought popped into her mind. Immediately Maria rushed out of the bathroom and scrambled to find her phone. Unlocking the touch screen and swiping through the apps.... "Shit, shit, shit..." Where was it? What the hell? Why couldn't she find it? She moved as if to throw her phone, but froze. That's why. She'd broken her phone two weeks ago. She'd had to redownload everything when she bought a new one. Somehow... someway she'd missed one. The app she'd used to track something very personal. She hadn't even thought about it. She knew her cycle, but she'd had it just in case. For moments like this. To reminder her if she was late.
Maria dropped the phone back on the bed and rushed back into the bathroom, slamming the door behind her...
Several minutes later she leaned against the bathroom sink, staring down at the pregnancy in the sink. Waiting... Waiting. God, couldn't it decide faster? Sure, there must be spells to do the same thing that were faster but Maria didn't know them. It wasn't exactly something they taught you school after all! Learning a pregnancy test spell was probably the last thing the teachers had wanted to teach students. She held her breath as she waited, begging that minus sign to appear...
A plus symbol slowly appeared.
Maria sank to the floor, her back against the wall and let out a shaky breath. She was always so careful. How? How was she.... This time when her stomach lurched uncomfortably she knew it was from the mere thought of being pregnant. Sure, she was promiscuous. Most people wouldn't even blink if they found out she was pregnant. But Maria was careful, to a degree. Birth control. Morning after pills. Hell, most the people she'd slept with in the past year were women. While Maria was bisexual, she knew she favored women.
Maria started back, trying to remember which men she'd slept with in the past two months. There had been three, in October, though only the first half. Two random men and Rhys. The second half of October... That had been women. Blair. One or two others. Maria immediately put the women out of her mind. Had there been any men at the end of October? She couldn't think of any... Plus, she knew she hadn't missed her October period. While the men at the beginning were still a contender... it was less likely. So then this month, November. Who had she been with?
Rhys.
She'd slept with Rhys.
Maria's stomach fully churned and she lurched forward, reaching the toilet just in time to throw up.
After throwing up, she leaned back against the wall, breathing a little heavier and running a hand through her hair. "Who else..?" She spoke to herself, as if speaking aloud might help change what she knew to the be the truth. She hadn't slept with any other men in November. Just Rhys, before the full moon. So either... she was farther along then she thought.... Or...
She put her head in her hands. What the hell had she done..?
