im caught in the twisting of the vine
April 24, 2025 Sienna Aurélie Linslee
Rhys had walls and constant guards up that might never budge and or wouldn’t have had he not met family. They had taught him a thing or two about what it means to feel for somebody else, to share something and have that connection. Not even Deva had managed to get that less through his thick skull, though that hadn’t been her fault. She’d been more than willing and had handed him her heart while Rhys hadn’t been able to do the same. Then certain people came into his life and he grew close to them and he found that he could drop some of those guards, just for them. And then Rhys would occasionally meet someone that was easy to talk to, he walked in and didn’t feel the need to have the extra guard up he did with everyone else and now here he was sharing one of his bigger secrets. The idea that “sharing” and reliving something somehow helped was triggering for him. When that woman had insisted that Rhys need to see what he feared in order to “get over it” it had done the opposite.
He could already see their faces. The unique mix of fear and horror and then followed by sadness if he ever told them what actually happened to his own mother. There was concentration on his face, he felt it was a lot to ask of them. Why burden them with something they didn’t need to know even if it might help them understand him a bit better? ”Have you told Jamie?” Rhys asked her simply, the photo she had pulled out had been hidden so he wondered how close she was to his sister and whether she knew. ”I think I didn’t want to tell Jamie when we met, she was only eleven.” Sometimes he got into the habit of thinking they were still small. That Jamie was still that bouncing first year in brand new Hufflepuff robes skipping to meet him. And Adrian was still that small boy, though he was taller than Rhys now by a few inches. And Max, she was the youngest but very wise on her own. ”And then I never saw how to bring it up again.”
Rhys thought about Dahlia, she was younger though only by a few years versus the rest of them. And their experiences hadn’t been all that different minus the age. It had made it easy to share his experience, though perhaps she was spared the nightmares having been much older. They were more alike than he cared to admit sometimes, but it helped with understanding.

Sienna was startled out of her thoughts by the sound of a cauldron close to boiling over. She had several projects going at any one time – brewing one potion at a time was highly inefficient, although it required an eye for detail to keep track of multiple cauldrons at once. Whenever there was a visitor in the back – which for the last few months had mostly consisted of Rhys – Sienna had gotten into the habit of putting lids on everything. Most people weren’t prepared for the unique mix of smells they might encounter at an apothecary. She frowned at the cauldron before sliding out of her seat slowly. “Sorry, one moment.” She grabbed a mixing spoon off her desk and removed the lid to a batch of Strengthening Solution, which she began to stir slowly. She was almost glad for the distraction because Rhys’s next question made her purse her lips as she stirred. “I haven’t,” she admitted as she took her time critically examining the color and consistency of the potion. It was much easier than having to look at Rhys. “I don’t think we’re close enough for that yet. I haven’t told…anybody,” Si added after a moment’s reflection. She slowly lowered the spoon, replaced the lid on the cauldron, and stood pensively for a moment before she slouched back into her seat. “Another three hours and then I’ll add the salamander blood,” she mumbled to herself as a reminder. Then she sighed and turned back to Rhys. “I think you made the right call back then. Eleven is too young for a story like that.” Si straightened her posture and tapped her fingers on the armrests, gazing at Rhys contemplatively. “But you can’t protect her from…everything. All the bad things in the world. And if she finds out later, at a time or place that you didn’t choose, she might resent that you kept this from her. But besides that, she’s your family. Don’t you feel…I don’t know, incomplete, keeping this from her?” Sienna didn’t have any siblings, so she’d never had anyone to share her life with until she began making friends at school (although that wasn’t quite the same thing). She couldn’t relate to that specific situation, but having to keep things from her father killed her sometimes. He was a Muggle, and there were things about the magical world that he could just never understand. But the idea of sharing everything with him was also daunting. rhys alexander greyback

Rhys nodded, for a moment he’d forgotten where they were and Sienna went to tend to one of the many brewing potions in the room. Fortunately, the smells of potions didn’t bother him. Once you’ve had the smell of centuries old artifacts and dust hit you in the face a few times very few things tended to bother you anymore. He wasn’t a seventh year in a NEWT level potions class wondering what in the world the dark green liquid in the cauldron was. Still, they spoke while she examined the cauldron in front of her. Interesting, well then that made them officially friends in a way. He didn’t mind though she had her reasons for not telling people just as he had his own, surely she could understand that part then.
”Maybe.” Jamie had always been so kind and warm to him, even on the first day they met. And they all took their family, their pack very seriously even if different things were going on in their lives. But her last question stuck with him. Incomplete. He did and he didn’t. He’d felt incomplete until he’d met all of them and realized he wasn’t alone. ”I see your point, but I think we’re all entitled to some privacy too.” Maybe it was a gray area, it wasn’t like details of your personal life you kept to yourself as he did as well but he still didn’t know why he hesitated. And Dahlia knew despite only having known her less than a year, but she was older and could understand. ”I’ll find the right time.”
This visit had certainly been different than all his last ones. But even if he wanted to tell Jamie all these things at the moment it hardly seemed the right time as she was recovering. He'd visit regardless but keep in mind all of this. And considering how dangerous his line of work now it would be better to get this off his chest in case he got injured again and the worst happened. If there was ever a thought that would make him leave his career it was that one and knowing he held back.

Rhys’s answers were the right balance between yielding and cagey. He clearly didn’t completely agree with her suggestions, but he still acknowledged that there was a point there. They really weren’t close enough at this point for Sienna to say anything else, so she decided to leave it for now. They were discussing an incredibly heavy topic, one that gotten into painful memories for both of them. It wasn’t right to push on something like that, especially when there was still so much Si didn’t know about Rhys’s relationship with his siblings. So she only shrugged slightly, and slouched back in her chair again. “It’s up to you, really. You get to choose how much they know about you.” Sienna took a moment to check the time and groaned out-loud when she saw the hour. As much drama as the past week had contained in relation to Aware Wolf, it was still secondary to her actual job. Ultimately, until she and Jamie got this project off the ground, it was something they were supposed to do in their off-hours. It was hard enough to balance the apothecary’s workload under normal circumstances, but now that they were understaffed and it was just Sienna she was starting to fall behind a little in her work. A new order had come in from the Ministry yesterday, and she still hadn’t finished that custom potion for a private client. “I need to get back to work,” Si finally explained to Rhys, although she didn’t want to even entertain the idea of getting up from her chair. She forced herself to straighten slightly. “But I’ll have something ready for you the next time you come back in. And hopefully some more answers about Jamie’s condition,” she promised. She forced herself to smile weakly at Rhys. “And for Merlin’s sake, go visit your sister. She must be tired of seeing me all the time.” That was also a test worth trying out – whether the scent of another werewolf would be more palatable to Jamie. There were still a lot of unknowns about her future, as well as the future of the potion, but Sienna didn’t give up easily and she wanted answers for Jamie and Rhys above all. “And…” she started hesitantly, struggling to find the right words. “If you want…I can prepare a Calming Draught for you. It might help with the nightmares, although it certainly shouldn’t become a regular habit.” rhys alexander greyback [End post Si!]
