24 December 2025 Cas frowned at Rhys and Ilija’s open discussion of pranks. In a social event with as many important guests as this one, creating problems in the name of ‘fun’ seemed shortsighted instead of weighing the impact it would inevitably have – but Cas supposed there were some people who had that luxury. Still, it wasn’t in his nature to allow self-destructive behavior if he had the ability to mitigate the impact. “What a nice way of introducing the world to the future of the Fortescues and Greybacks,” Cas responded in a bored tone, although his eyebrows furrowed in disapproval. He hadn’t seen either cursebreaker in years – when they had still been young and learning the way of the world. “I see the years haven’t changed you much,” he continued a little flatly. Misbehaving at a royal ball was hardly the right reputation to build for family names as well-known as theirs – it would establish them as childish, undisciplined, and among those people who took advantage of their family situation instead of putting in the effort to improve it. He was inclined to let it slide for Ilija, if only to encourage his gradual recovery. But Rhys should know better. During Rhys’s training, Cas had learned quickly that he had a good head for cursebreaking, but an undisciplined temper and a penchant for being goaded into disadvantageous situations. So he had always attempted to drill into his trainee’s thick head that some people couldn’t afford to be childish. It was disappointing to see the lesson hadn’t stuck, even after having years to mature. Well, if Rhys needed to be reminded that having a provocative name like Karkaroff or Greyback meant extra baggage…that was always the role Cas had filled in the past. Cas took a long sip of his drink and gave the two younger cursebreakers a skeptical look. He could easily continue to tell them off, or supervise them closely for the rest of the night, but they weren’t his family so Cas had no interests to protect. So he just finished with: “I expected better.” He knew cursebreaking attracted people who didn’t like to conform to societal standards, and Cas was definitely guilty of the impulse himself. But in such ‘distinguished’ company, to borrow Rhys’s earlier choice of words, Cas could never be off his best behavior – he had an obligation as the eldest Karkaroff to constantly seek opportunities for advancement. And anyway, he’d stopped giving in to his own impulses years ago, the minute it became obvious that what he wanted and what his family needed were two distinctly opposite things. That had even been the reason he’d left cursebreaking. He sighed at the thought and finished off his drink, setting it firmly back on the tray Rhys was still holding. He knew his free time with the cursebreakers was slowly ticking to an end, and he would have to return to his real task soon. Probably best to track down Anya first -- misery loves company, after all. rhys alexander greyback , @ilija , @renfri

Irina had gotten the invitation to the Windsor Christmas Ball and was surprised - she knew Will since he had been in her house, and Sybil as she had been in her year, but she hadn't considered herself close to any of them in particular. As news of the ball traveled through Gringotts however, Irina discovered that pretty much the entirety of the Wizarding World had been invited, and she felt more at ease. If everyone was going, then she surely could find other people to hang out with. She knew Daniel had gotten an invitation as well, but balls weren't really a great scene for an Empath who could sense everyones emotions, and the Yule Ball had been required of them two years prior. She had heard from her colleagues that the majority of them were planning on going, so she decided that she would go too. Irina arrived at the ball in the blue dress she had worn to the Yule Ball; she was thankful it still fit well, and it was so beautiful she couldn't bear the thought of letting it waste away in her closet for the rest of her life. Stepping into the ballroom, she was momentarily taken aback by the opulent glamour of the space. She had seen castles of course; being a history nerd, she had gone on excursions to see old ruins of castles and seen the beauty of what they once were, but she had never been in a still-functioning palace that people lived in before. Rousing herself from looking like an open-jawed idiot, Irina looked around and spotted a group from work, pleasantly surprised that Renfri was now there as well. She made her way over to them, fighting the nerves in her stomach as most of the colleagues were at least a few years older than her. " Hello! Renfri, it's so nice to see you again," she said brightly as she arrived. @renfri Casimir Elias Karkaroff @ilija rhys alexander greyback

leigh straightened the tie around his neck as he walked through the doors into the ballroom. he'd been invited to a ball and who was he to reject an invitation? there were still many parts of him that hadn't changed since his parents demise and that was one of them. it had been a while since he'd brushed off his dress robes, much preferring clothes that were easier to move in while he was looking for artifacts and dealing with curses that didn't give a hide what the person breaking them was wearing. but he couldn't deny that it felt good to feel the tailored fabric of the jacket as he reached to pull a glass of what looked like whiskey off a tray that was being carried around by the help. he sipped the liquid and decided that it wasn't as offensive as it could have been so he'd finish the glass.
he nursed it in his hand as he crossed the room to where he could see the people he worked with had congregated. it wasn't like he had a vast amount of people in the room who'd be falling over themselves to talk to him but he did figure he could have a few minutes of conversation with them before he mingled and found someone he else he knew. it seemed like the whole wizarding community was in the room so he knew there'd be someone. he took another sip as he approached the group, knowing most of the faces at a glance. he heard cas and he couldn't help but let out a laugh that could have passed for a scoff. "you expected better from this lot?" he said as he sipped the drink in his hand and fixed his gaze onto ilija and rhys, knowing that of the group they were probably who cas had directed his comment at.

try to let go of the truth the battles of your youth December 24, 2025 Sixth year, a lot went on that year. Rhys fell in love for the first time. With the usual accomplices, many pranks brought to life. Ilija, along with Hannah, were those accomplices in most cases, with Renfri typically waiting for them with a stern expression as usual. The entire year was a roller coaster if he was frank about it. What began on such a positive note went to the point of extreme unhappiness. The summer following the break-up from the now present former sweetheart was equally as gloomy. Over the summer, Rhys became of age, a man in a society that took nothing but perfection in its citizens. The following year began on a more positive note, connecting with a new sibling--the first one of many. Rhys let out a chuckle. The memory brought out a happy feeling. Nostalgic, even. Better times than the events he met over the past seven or so years now. When Rhys thought back on those specific times, these pranks were perfect practice for his current occupation. Manipulating items plus enchantments for a goal, though there was the obligation to reverse the effects. If Professors plus Prefects were not criticizing Rhys for fighting when his temper was set off, it was because of these activities with his classmates where he put his intellect or expertise to misuse. "Yes, the bubbles. Renfri wasn't too happy with that, but neither was the Professor." Rhys gave a sly smirk to Renfri, expecting a glare coming his way, but that was not anything new. "But why waste anything alcoholic at this point?" That was a waste of something comforting in such a moment. Being on the same page was their normal, even after the six-year gap of not speaking. It was easy to fall back into the natural groove built very early at the young ages of eleven to twelve. Rhys was able to recall the split feeling in his stomach after his first year. Being happy to have new pals plus a place to feel that sense of belonging but then loneliness because it was back to the orphanage for him. Rhys shot a look to his former mentor, Cas. Annoyance clear on his face, plus the comment about their families--Fortescue's along with Greybacks. "Well, I often have people telling me to stop being so serious." It was not a lie. When in the right environment, Rhys was a rather pleasant person, it was never his initial intention to be so serious all the time, but his want for control typically won out. Cas' typical bearing austere, purposeful, something to emulate, when the result was something that gave results. Rhys was able to retain plus learn a lot from his former mentor--fortunately, he was grateful for that time. At that point in his life, there wasn't a person who took a chance to teach him anything to help him truly grow into the man he strove to be. Cas' verbally spoke his personal assessment of their behavior, but Rhys' response was nonexistent --it was moments such as this where their contrasting histories were obvious. However, there was no obligation on Cas' part to control them in any way our express an opinion on their behavior when Ilija, along with Rhys, was still in training for those almost two years. The reason for Cas leaving the Curse Breaking career was never clear to Rhys. His curiosity always gave him the urge to ask, even though it was clearly none of his business. Perhaps if Rhys abruptly left his career plus passion, he might see questions as annoying. He, at the moment, felt an annoyance when someone tries to ask him to repeat himself. Rhys felt the tray shift in his grip. He saw Cas place an empty glass with the rest of the full ones. The tray was not heavy, fortunately, but there was no requirement to continue carrying it. A waiter began to walk past them. Rhys stuck out the tray when he was near. The waiter's expression was not of surprise. He happily took the tray off from Rhys' possession, so he was free. Two new faces, Rhys knew them from work, of course. One face was a trainee who's training was put in his charge after Renfri was taken out of work. Irina gave a greeting to Renfri. Rhys gave a warm smile, "Nice to see you, Irina." The memory of being a new Curse Breaker always came to the forefront of his memory when he was in training with new Curse Breakers. If his patience was still intact, then there was never a problem with respect, plus creating a great rapport. Plus, there was a lot of trust between the senior Curse Breaker to the former Curse Breaker, so when Renfri spoke honestly that Irina was an excellent trainee, Rhys saw no issue trusting that. Much like her opinion of Rhys' younger sister, who was also in training with Rhys' supervision. The group in the corner was now far larger than earlier. Younger Curse Breakers met them. Also, Rhys became conscious of his age over them. "If only we were all as classy as you, Leigh." Rhys spoke with a sarcastic tone. Another one that was out of training now, but still young--plus very eager, Rhys was able to recall from what time they previously spent working together. This event was not something for Rhys. A Greyback was not seen at such events. Plus, an Ex from his past, also the current source of his stress, was now noticeable to him across the room, as if her outfit was meant to conceal anything. Rhys felt a strange sensation in his chest. Much like the anxiety of seeing his former love across the room. But this new feeling was much angrier, more primal. The previous feeling was more of a longing, also heart-ache. The magical flask was still in Rhys' possession, which meant more whiskey--more than usual in a single swig, but the burning sensation in the back of his throat was its own relief.

While she wouldn't admit it, Casimir's presence tonight was very much appreciated. No doubt there would be a lot of pureblood politics going on, and those that didn't want to be part of those circles, but would be dragged into them, needed ways out. Respectable ways out. Another pureblood, to get them an excuse to end a conversation. Jasper, for example. He'd rescue him if needed, and hoped he'd do the same. Casimir would hopefully assist wit that as well if the need arose.
Renfri couldn't help but smugly smirk as Casimir responded to Rhys, talking to him as if he were a child in need of a scolding. Though, as he lowered his voice, this time speaking to her, she stopped smirking to glanced at him, her gaze dropping to his hand on her arm. She could see it touching the arm... and yet didn't feel a thing. "I'll tell you about it after," she whispered. He wouldn't like it. Whle they weren't a couple, they'd shared that once. He'd known her in certain ways. He didn't know her as a "cripple". No doubt when she told him he'd be angry. Some stories were best left for more private settings, and not balls. He'd recognize by the tone she used though... that it was very serious.
Thankfully the serious moment didn't last long. The conversation carried on and it was like old times. Though a more formal setting. The curse breakers didn't seem to care. It was comfortable, and nice, just getting everyone together. Though, she got pulled away for another conversation momentarily. She stepped away, putting on a fake smile. Of course, she had no idea what the trouble makers were discussing during her absence, though she made sure to keep an eye on them out of the corner of her eye. Finally though, she managed to get out of the conversation and made her way back. Clearly they hadn't been behaving too well, but she was distracted by Irina's appearance. Immediately Renfri smiled. "Irina, there you are. Irina, this is Casimir, he was a curse breaker when these knuckleheads and I were in training. Cas, this is Irina. She was my trainee for a time." Before the incident.

For some reason Ilija knew he was touchy on certain subject but when Cas so casually mentioned introducing the world to the future Greyback and Fortestcues a wry smile crossed his face. There was an introduction on future Fortescues he'd hoped to make years ago, but that had long since been cancelled. The future Fortescues? He shrugged, as if he didn't care, but found himself picking up a glass of celebratory bubbles, even if he didn't drink it. "I'll leave that to my siblings." He said in what was no doubt a cold tone for him. It implied something he never really voiced out loud, but something everybody here probably knew. His line had died before it had begun and he was far from in a mental place to seek out a new person to share his future with. That would probably take several years of therapy and he hadn't quite made a start on that. "Considering Vas is catering this event I'd say my family will get plenty of good repute from her. If not our hopes lie with Felix." He said with a small smile as he mocking raised his glass of bubbles in cheers. He had faith in his younger siblings and knew they were more than capable of setting a good reputation for the family. He just wanted to... something.
Yet he visibly perked up as Rhys brought his mind back to happier times filled with mischief and bubbles. "I mean, yes it would be a waste of perfectly good drinks but I'd almost argue the looks on peoples faces would be worth it. All the classy suits and fancy dresses just drowning in bubbles." He smiled a large smile, his eyes twinkling with pleasure at the idea nad the incredulous looks many of them were likely to have at such a sight. "Oh the outrage..." He said in contentment as his imagination made the formal event a lot more interesting. He shrugged. "Suits are incredibly uncomfortable and I can't really pretend that I enjoy being in one." He said, even as he unbottoned the top botton of his shirt. He hadn't bothered with a tie or a bowtie and his suit was supposed to be a casual one but he didn't exactly own anything more fancy, nor was he willing to invest in it. This was never going to be something he did often.
As some new and younger faces joined the group Ili saluted them with a slight smile on his face. "Leigh, Irina, nice that you can join us." He said cheerfully. "If either of you have any idea of how to make this party into something we can actually call a party I'm all ears. Just nothing that would reflect badly on my sister, since I want this night to go perfectly for her." Which pretty much excluded playing horrible pranks on the food. Vasilia might also murder him and he wanted to avoid that as well. It wouldn't be much of a good look for him or his sister if they started waging a war on one another at a formal ball. Not to mention this place was... a lot less interesting than the average tomb. He wriggled his nose in distaste at that thought and drank from the champagne at long last. Maybe tonight would end up with an opportunity to surprise himself.

Irina smiled and extended her hand out to Casimir. “It’s very nice to meet you Cas, I’ve heard about you,” she told him. Of course her father had something to say about the mans’ last name - Karkaroff - but from Irina’s experience living with Andromeda Lestrange for seven years, the last name of one bad egg did not mean the entire family was rotten to the core. Irina would rather judge someone on themselves, rather than their family. “How much trouble did you all get into when you started?” Irina couldn’t help but ask, laughing a little. She knew a lot of people in Rhys’ year had joined the Cursebreaking program; far more than any other year, so she wondered how much inner competition there really was between all of them. Raleigh joined them then and Irina smiled and gave a little wave in greeting. He was just a year older than her, so she’d seen more of him during her trainings. He was another one with one of those pureblood last names that raised eyebrows, but he had always been nice to her, so again, Irina didn’t judge. “How are you liking the ball? Does it live up to the expectations of royalty?” she asked the group with a chuckle. She knew Sybil a little bit; her older brother had been in Irina’s house, but she obviously knew how famous she was in the Muggle world for being a princess. In Irina’s opinion this ball was everything she could have expected it to be and more. @raleigh Casimir Elias Karkaroff @renfri rhys alexander greyback @ilija

24 December 2025 The cursebreaker corner of the ballroom felt like stepping into another world. Every pureblood social function was a masquerade – each individual had their place in the dance, and they could either choose to follow the steps or fall out of sync. The latter usually came with greater consequences, as leaving meant it became that much more difficult to rejoin later. So Cas had his mask, the façade he relied on when he spoke to other purebloods. He had come tonight with the expectation of utilizing it nearly the entire time, without a moment to himself because really – ever since he had left cursebreaking, he had very few things for himself. Borgin and Burke’s demanded one thing of him, and Ouroboros demanded another. Cursebreaking had been the choice he had made for himself, and he’d been all but forced to give it up. But he had that back, if only for as long as this conversation lasted. Cas felt his lips twitch into a half-smile before he could force his expression into something more neutral as Raleigh joined the conversation and began to banter with Rhys. “I suppose it was too much to hope for,” Cas observed, humor lacing his tone as he moved to redirect his attention towards Renfri and the new cursebreaker (so he could assume). His eyes trailed over Renfri’s injury – something he had heard about from other cursebreakers, although it was his first time seeing it – as she promised to tell him the story later. Injuries weren’t uncommon for cursebreakers, but Cas knew too many who had retired because of a life-changing one. Those stories never came with happy endings, and he only nodded slightly before letting the topic go. The setting wasn’t quite right, and although his history with Renfri was different from the years he’d spent with Jasper or Rhys, there had still been enough that he could read the solemn note in her eyes. So instead he gave Irina a polite smile as Renfri introduced her as her former trainee. The introduction – especially to a member of the Krum family, another set of Eastern European purebloods – more closely resembled the polite conversation he was used to, and Cas responded neutrally, “It’s a pleasure. Having trained the knuckleheads, I can say confidently that you’re very lucky to have received Renfri as a mentor. Otherwise the only training you would have received would be how to drink your way under the table.” He made eye contact with each of the others for a solid second, daring them to contradict him. Cas had never been afraid of his trainees, after all. The group began to split into smaller conversations, and Cas took the opportunity to scan the ballroom again – purposefully letting his eyes slide over any blondes because he absolutely was not looking for anybody in particular. His gaze finally caught on his sister making small talk with another pureblood, and Cas’s mouth twitched in displeasure for a second at the very painful reminder that that was also what he had come for. Briefly reconnecting with the cursebreakers had been liberating, but nothing good ever stayed in his life. “If you’ll excuse me, I have people to see. Renfri, you’ll remember not to let Jasper wander too far from the group?” Or his parents will find him went unspoken. Cas gave a small, reserved smile as his way of saying goodbye before stepping sideways to catch the arm of one of his business partners. Time to reenter the den of lions. @everybody! [End post Cas!]
