Shay saw the shiver run up Edmund’s spine, and he felt the need to defend Dominique. “She’s n-not l-like the ones w-we kn-know.” Séamus said. Lucy and Ondina were both awful, especially to Muggleborns like him and Edmund. They were mean to everyone, of course, but the two of them had special targets on their backs. Edmund seemed enthusiastic about the idea even if he wasn’t so enthusiastic about the relatives of his prospective tutor, and Shay was all too happy to continue to talk about Dom, whom he had admired more and more with every passing day. “Y-yeah, she w-will.” Séamus said. He hadn’t even thought about Dom being a year older being beneficial – he just knew that she made him comprehend a little better. “I h-haven’t asked h-her yet.” Shay admitted. “N-never a g-good t-time.”

Edmund could sense Séamus' sincerity when he talked about Dominique Weasley and nodded. "Good. If she wasn't I was definitely going to be worried for you. I guess I can relax?" He made the statement a question, just wanting to double check. He and Séamus weren't all that close, but he didn't want Séamus to get abused, whether it be verbally or emotionally. Then Séamus said he hadn't actually asked. "Well do you know when you want to ask her?" Ed questioned. He didn't want to be pushy, but it was always better to talk about these sorts of things sooner rather than later. If one didn't, they might end up finding out the other person is already too busy, and he didn't want that to happen.

Ed said that he would be worried for Shay if Dom was anything like Lucy or Ondina, and Shay smiled at the other boy. It was nice to know that Ed cared, even if the caring thing was a little new, and some would argue, a little overdue. Séamus couldn’t complain, though, because he hadn’t made much of an effort to talk to Edmund, either. The plagues of two introverts trying to become friends, he supposed. “Y-yes, r-relax.” Séamus said. “D-Dom is v-very n-nice.” He was going to suggest that the two meet, but the selfish part of Shay wanted to keep Dom to himself, so he didn’t say anything. “N-no…” Séamus admitted quietly. “I’m h-hoping the r-right t-time w-will p-present itself.” It was easier to hope for an accidental run-in than to willing confront Dominique. Even if she did make him feel more comfortable than most, she didn't magically make his shyness evaporate.

Séamus seemed very certain about this Dom girl, so Edmund eventually shrugged. "All right. I guess I'll take your word for it." Though if he ever did see Séamus around with a red-head, he would probably pay more attention now. He smiled when Séamus said that he didn't know when he was going to talk to her about it. "Do you know what you're going to say?" he asked, but Ed was almost sure he knew the answer this time. His housemate was probably going to wing it, planning that the right words would come when the moment was right. Hopefully that would work for him.

Edmund said that Shay would take his word for Dominique’s trustworthiness, and Séamus nodded. “I l-like to th-think m-my w-word is g-good.” He said softly. Shay tried not to lie – which had been one of his focuses as of late, really, because it was strange how many little white lies someone could tell in a day, not the least of which was ‘I’m fine’. When Edmund asked if he knew what he was going to say, Shay shook his head. “L-like I s-said, I’m k-kind of g-going w-with the f-flow.” He said. He was worried that if he let himself get too obsessed in planning the details of everything he’d worry if some slight thing went well. Waiting to go with the slow wasn’t Séamus’s normal style, but he was hoping it would be a good change of pace for him.

Edmund smiled, "I trust your word," he confirmed. He didn't really know Séamus all that well, but he wanted to get to know him more. He had a feeling that he and Séamus could get close .... possibly. If the other boy wanted to as well. Edmund nodded when Séamus continued to say he was just going to see how it happened. "Well, you should let me know what she says." He paused for a moment. "I'm curious now." He wondered whether or not Séamus would agree to that idea out loud.

A small smile flickered onto Shay’s face when Edmund said that he trusted the other boy. Séamus wasn’t much good at friends, but he figured having someone who trusted him was a good start to friendship. “Th-thanks.” He said simply. “I w-will…if I ever g-get the c-courage.” Shay said with a small smile. “Wh-what else d-do you w-want to t-talk about? Other th-than m-my t-tutor.” Séamus added. There had to be something they could talk about, other than the failed Yule Ball and Shay’s inability to learn at a normal pace.

Edmund smiled when Séamus did. Maybe it would be nice to have another friend, someone in his year that he could talk to, now that things with Addi were ... not happening. Ed missed having a close friend. "I'm sure you will," he said encouragingly. If Séamus really wanted to do better in class, asking for help was a great idea, and if Dominique was as nice as he said she was, then it shouldn't be a problem. He thought for a moment when Séamus asked what he wanted to talk about. "Uhh ... what do you like to do? When you don't have to study?" Ed was embarrassed when he realized that he didn't even know how his dorm-mate liked to spend his time.

Edmund decided that their next topic of conversation was going to be what both of them liked to do outside of their obligations to school work. That was easy, even though Shay found himself with less free time then he would have liked due to his need for incessant studying. “I l-like to s-sing.” Séamus began. Since he was on the frog choir, that was obvious. Then again, Edmund might not have known he was in the choir, so it was a good start. “And I p-play the c-cello.” Again, that was another club that he had been a part of for a while, but another thing Edmund might not know. There was also the flower thing, but Shay didn’t want to overwhelm Edmund with too much. “W-what about y-you?” That was an easy thing to turn back on Edmund and help progress their relationship a little further a little quicker.

Ed looked at his fellow housemate with interest. Séamus liked to sing? That meant he probably knew Addi at least a little bit, considering how much she liked to sing as well. He wondered if the boy was in the choir but didn't ask. He cocked his head with interest when he said that he played the cello. "Do you have one here? Or at home?" Meaning a cello, but Ed didn't realize that he didn't come out and say that exactly. When he asked what Ed liked to do, Ed shrugged, "I like Quidditch. It's one of the things I'm good at." He didn't say the only thing because he didn't want it to seem like he was looking for pity.

Edmund asked if Séamus had a cello, and he nodded. “It’s h-here. In the orchestra r-room.” He explained. It was a lot easier for him to go there if he needed to practice rather than dragging his cello up and down the stairs every time he entered or exit practice. And the orchestra room was sound-proofed, which meant that Shay knew he was sure not to bother anyone when he practiced. The cello wasn’t everyone’s favorite instrument – it didn’t have the same delicacy as the violin, but Séamus liked the deep, bellowy notes it could produce. It was a way for him to talk without talking, just like singing was. Edmund mentioned that he liked Quidditch, and Shay nodded. “W-what p-position? And w-what else are you g-good at?” The Slytherin prompted.

"Do you practice there a lot?" Edmund didn't even know where the orchestra room was, but maybe that was one of the reasons why he didn't see Séamus all that often. If he was busy practicing his cello, that would be a good reason. "I like the cello," Ed admitted. Going to lots of royal functions, he had the opportunity to listen to lots of string performances and he liked the cello the most. The violin and viola were too high and ... annoying to him, but he appreciated the deeper tones of the cello. He shrugged when Séamus asked about Quidditch. "I play Chaser, so I try to make the goals," he explained, just in case Quidditch wasn't something that Séamus really understood or liked. Then he shrugged again. What was he good at? "I'm good at annoying my siblings and getting into fights," he admitted with a wry smile. No one could argue with that.

Séamus shrugged when Edmund asked if he practiced in the orchestra room a lot. “D-depends on w-what you th-think a l-lot is.” Shay had other obligations – Herbology Club and getting his homework being the highest up on the list – so sometimes playing his cello fell to the wayside, but he was there more than he was, say, the Slytherin common room. Shay was a little surprised that Edmund had an opinion on the cello – most people didn’t seem to understand his passion for his instrument – but smiled at the other boy for expressing his like. “I c-can p-play f-for you s-sometime, if you l-like a c-certain s-song.” Séamus offered. He didn’t know if Edmund liked music enough to know specific classical songs, but if he knew enough to have an instrument he favored, it was possible.
Shay knew what a Chaser was, but he appreciated that Edmund was trying to explain. “D-do you th-think n-next you you’ll b-be the C-captain?” Shay asked. He knew Slytherin’s team captain this year was a seventh year, so it was possible that Ed could take the spot. When he mentioned that he was good at annoying his siblings, Shay chuckled a little, hoping it was meant as a joke. “I m-meant g-good th-things.” He replied with a bit of a smirk. Nothing of what Ed had said was particularly positive.

Edmund thought for a moment, "Well, do you spend more than an hour in there a week?" He wasn't trying to be pushy, Ed was sincerely curious and he hoped that Séamus didn't mind the questions. He thought he could see surprise on Séamus' face as he said that he liked the cello. Then he offered to play for Ed. "I'd like that," Ed agreed, "but I don't really know any songs. I just ... string instruments are often played at royal functions and I realized a while ago that I prefer the cello to most other instruments. If there's something you'd like to play for me, I'd be happy to hear it." Truly, though, he would. He thought the cello was a very soothing instrument to listen to.
Edmund shrugged when Séamus asked if he thought he'd become the Captain. "I don't know. A part of me hopes not, because I don't really see myself as a good leader. I'm not really one for making plays or anything, I just do my part." Yeah ... it would definitely be easier to not be the captain. Besides, if he were captain, then he would definitely have to talk with Addi again, which he wasn't sure if he'd ever want to do. Then he laughed a little when Séamus chuckled at his joke. "I can't really think of any right now," he admitted. "I do decent in class, but I'm not really good. And I've never been very good with people. I'm not sure." That was a terrible answer, but at the moment it was the best Ed could do.

Edmund clarified what he thought a lot was – an hour a week – and Shay nodded. “I t-try to d-do at least th-thirty m-minutes a d-day.” He said. To some, that might seem like a lot, but Shay knew that there were plenty of people who practiced at least an hour every day. Séamus definitely tried to up the amount of time he practiced when he did have the time (which was normally on weekends), but he wasn’t all that dedicated to his cello; it was just a fun pastime. Edmund said that he didn’t really know any songs, and Shay nodded. “Th-that’s f-fine.” He assured the other boy. It just meant that Séamus was going to have to look for a few pieces of music that he thought Edmund would enjoy. “I’ll l-let you kn-know.” Shay said. He’d probably invite Ed to the orchestra room when the occasion for playing the song came, for ease.
“W-well, l-leadership is something you h-have to p-practice.” Séamus said reasonably. No one became a good leader overnight, and being in a position where he could learn different leadership strategies would help Ed become a better leader. “D-dependability is important.” Shay added when Edmund said that he just did his part. That was a good first step. The other Slytherin then said that he couldn’t really think about other things he was good at, admitting that he wasn’t sure. “You’re a g-good l-listener.” Shay offered. Never once had he felt pressured by Edmund to speak faster or stop stuttering, which was more than he could say of most people.
