Thirty minutes a day. That was more than Ed dedicated himself to when it came to anything, except for avoiding his siblings, but he wasn't going to tell Séamus that. Edmund nodded, "Cool. I'm excited to hear you play." He meant it. Edmund had a feeling that listening to Séamus play the cello might help him calm down and forget his stresses for a bit. He wasn't sure if it would really work, but he was definitely willing to try.
Ed shrugged, "I know, I just ... Will always was the leader. And Susan. I'm more ... the avoider, when possible." It wasn't that he wanted to argue, but he really didn't feel ... dependable? That was the word Séamus was using to describe him. Ed shook his head, "No, I'm not dependable. I'm moody and unpredictable and ..." he trailed off, not sure how to express what he was. Then he smiled at Séamus' compliment. "Thanks. I try to be good at that." Unless it was to Addi right now. He didn't want to listen to her at all.

Edmund said that he was excited to hear Séamus play, and Shay cocked his head. He didn’t think that anyone had ever been excited to hear him before. His parents had always tolerated it, because they were the ones who put him in cello lessons in the first place, but it was difficult to muster enthusiasm for a squeaky half-performance by a shy ten-year-old.
When the other Slytherin said that his older siblings had always been the leaders, Shay nodded. “Th-they’re n-not h-here anymore.” Séamus couldn’t help but argue. If Edmund waited too long, then his siblings were going to be taking over his life constantly. Doing something that only involved Slytherin house, which none of Edmund’s siblings had a hand in, made perfect sense to Shay. The other boy said that he was moody and unpredictable, and Séamus sighed. “B-but you’re d-dependable in Qu-Quidditch.” He tried to argue. Edmund had just said that he always did his part in the game – he couldn’t have it both ways, both unpredictable and always being there.

Séamus didn't say anything else about playing for Edmund, so Ed decided to let it drop. He didn't want to pressure Séamus or make him nervous or anything, though he was looking forward to hearing him play.
"Susan is," Ed argued, but he smiled a little to show that he understood what Séamus was saying. "I know, I've just never had the opportunity to lead. I'm fairly good at doing my own thing and taking care of myself, but I haven't really ever taken anyone along with me, if that makes sense." He could lead himself just fine, but who would want to follow him. Ed's eyes widened slightly when Séamus made the point that he was dependable in Quidditch. "I ... I guess I am. I hadn't really thought of it that way before," he admitted semi-softly. He did love the sport and did his best to support his teammates in it.

Séamus smiled, but shook his head at Edmund when the other boy said that his sister was still at school. The next year she wouldn’t be, and besides, what she did in Ravenclaw had almost nothing to do with Edmund and Slytherin anyways. Ed explained that he was good at doing his own thing, and Shay nodded. He was much the same way, though he suspected his lack of company and Edmund’s had different motivations. “If you ever w-want to d-do s-something n-new, you h-have to b-build on the sk-skills you already h-have.” Shay said wisely when Edmund said he hadn’t thought about himself being dependably in Quidditch. “F-find the one th-thing you’re already g-good at and you c-can b-build.” Edmund’s dependability could grow into something more if he let it. It was just like a flower; it needed a little sunshine, a little water, and a little space, and then it could become something beautiful.

Ed smiled wryly at his newfound friend. "You're good at giving advice," he commented as he thought about it. "I'll think about it. It'd probably be a lot of fun to be Quidditch Captain ... but also be a lot of work too." He paused, thinking about the possibility. He loved Quidditch. In the air, Edmund felt like he was who he was supposed to be, like he could make a difference. Anywhere else, there was that chance, but it didn't seem as likely. He chuckled at Séamus' comment. "Alright, I'll start thinking about the things I'm good at then. Once I have a list, I'll let you know," he teased. He didn't know why Séamus was bringing out this side of him, but Ed liked it.

Shay sputtered a little when Edmund said that he was good at giving advice. He didn’t think he had any skill in the area, but then again, he didn’t have many people seeking his advice in the first place. “In the end, it’s n-not your ch-choice, t-too.” Séamus added. It was the choice of the Head of House, if he wasn’t mistaken. Someone could refuse to be the Captain, though, he was sure, so it would only be Edmund’s total choice if he chose to decline it. “W-work is s-sometimes g-good.” Working on the Herbology club kept him from going insane slogging through the rest of his homework; maybe Edmund would find a similar release in Quidditch, which already seemed to be a way for him to destress. “G-good. It’s h-homework.” Shay said sternly, though the effect was slightly ruined by his stutter.

Ed nodded at Shay's most recent comment. That was true. He didn't get to choose who became Team Captain, but what was the harm in him putting his name up for consideration? He started to think about it a little more until Séamus started talking about how work was good. "Yeah, it probably would be good." Ed was sure that Will and Susan would approve of that. They'd probably say that the responsibility was good for him. Edmund smiled when Séamus said it was his homework. "How much time to I have to think about it until it's due?" he asked in what could be considered a teasing voice.

The amount of agreements in this conversation was a little weird, if Shay was being honest. He normally didn’t talk with people for long enough to be able to agree with them, so to be able to talk to – and agree with – someone else, especially someone with a reputation for being prickly, was a bit of a novel concept. But he liked it. When Ed asked how much time he had before the homework was due, Shay grinned broadly at him. Was this what it was like to be able to horse around with a friend? “T-two d-days.” Shay said firmly. He knew the deadline was soon, but he was hopeful that with the pressure of a deadline, Edmund would be forced to realize that he was pretty great more quickly than if he had time to ruminate on all the reasons he was good or bad.

Séamus seemed to be getting quiet and Ed wasn't sure if he really wanted to be talking to him much longer; it was probably awkward for him since they'd never really spoken with one another before. A while ago it might have annoyed him to have a stranger giving him advice on how to live his life, but Ed was to a point now where he didn't really care who talked to him or what they talked about. Besides, it was nice to have someone new to confide in him, someone that seemed to see the good in him. Ed gave a small chuckle when he heard that he had two days. "Cool. Do you want to meet somewhere to talk about it then?" Why not see how much Séamus actually wanted to be around him.

Their conversation seemed to be drawing to a close, which was fine with Shay. He normally didn’t talk that much to begin with. “The c-common r-room or d-dorm should b-be f-fine?” Séamus suggested. They would see each other enough in both of those places that setting up a separate meeting seemed a little bit silly. “D-don’t f-forget the l-lavender and h-hazel.” Séamus advised, referring to the plants that he had given to Edmund at the beginning of their conversation. Shay stood up from where they were sitting so that when he and Edmund parted ways, it wouldn’t be awkward, with one of them left behind. Hopefully they didn’t end up going in the same direction, Shay thought with a bit of a grimace.

Edmund nodded when Séamus said they could meet in the common room. "Alright. We'll do that then," he agreed easily. He nodded, picking up the plants that Séamus brought. "Thanks for the ... talk," Edmund added awkwardly. He wasn't good at conversations like this, but he wanted to make sure that Séamus knew he was grateful for it. "It looks like it's about time for dinner. You want to go with me?" He asked with a smile. It was nice knowing that he'd made a new friend. At least now Ed might have someone to talk to while he ate.
