The New Year had come, which was strange for Emmy, since she had already had her new beginning the week before when she had returned to the United Kingdom. She had hemmed and hawed for a long time about bringing her dragots into Gringotts for conversion, but at the end of the day, she knew that if anyone caught wind of how much money was under her bed, she’d be lucky not to end up with her throat slit. Emmy had contacted the bank and they had given her two security trolls and their trainer as guards to transport the money with, which was a relief. Once she had gotten to the bank, though, Emmy had requested for someone else to be called to help her with the transport of her physical items that she wanted to put into safekeeping: Rory. She didn’t really need his help, considering all she had was a pile of papers and a locket, but she wanted someone else to take the journey to the depths of the bank with other than the goblin, and he was the only person she knew on the correct side of the ocean. Waiting in the lobby of the bank with the security trolls on either side of her was a strange, surreal experience, but Emmy knew that she wouldn’t feel as strange once Rory walked through the doors.

Rory wasn't exactly sure what Emmy wanted when she asked him to meet her at Gringotts. Maybe she wanted to meet him there because it was an easily recognized landmark and she wanted to hang out with him again? Or maybe she was making a deposit or something, but why would she want him there for that? No matter the reason, Rory was going. He enjoyed spending time with his childhood best friend, even if it was going to be in a bank. When he walked up, he was surprised to see her standing there with security trolls beside her. Why did she need security trolls? "Hey Em," he said with a smile as he approached her. "What's going on?"

Waiting for Rory wasn’t doing much to help Emmy’s nerves, but the moment he walked through the door, she felt some of the tension seep out of her. Everything was going to be just fine. He asked what was going on, and Emmy wondered how to give an answer without seeming snobbish. “I’m depositing some things in my Gringotts vault…and apparently it’s quite the production.” Mostly because she was assigned one of the vaults further down in the bank because of the size of her deposit and the promise that there would be more gold to come, from royalties from her book sales and the like. “I was wondering if you’d like to come with me?” Emmy asked, almost shyly. That was stupid. When they were kids she had dragged him anywhere she wanted to…but things were going to be a little different now, Emmy thought. “I mean, to the vault.” Emmy clarified. There was already a cart and a goblin waiting for her, but Emmy had insisted on waiting for Rory to come first.

Why would it be a production to put her things in the Vault? Unless she had a lot to deposit ... Rory didn't want to push her for information, but he was suddenly very curious. What was going on with Emmy? He grinned when she invited him to come along. So that was why she invited him. "Of course I'll go with you," he told her with a wide smile. He loved spending time with her, he didn't care what they were doing. He reached forward, grabbing her hand like he often did when they were children, spending their time with one another. "You ready to go?" Rory asked, looking around curiously to see if he could figure out which way they were going to go.

Emmy smiled when Rory agreed to go with her to her vault. The security troll trainer seemed to take that as his cue to leave, and Emmy was glad for that – the trolls didn’t smell very good, and now that Rory was here, she didn’t need them. “Yeah, I’m ready.” Emmy said, pointing towards the cart that was waiting for them. Emmy smiled at Rory when he took her hand. She was right – it was just like it had been when they were just kids. Emmy’s belongings, the ones she needed to deposit, at least, were already in the cart, guarded by the goblin, but when they got into the cart, Emmy picked a bracelet up off the top of the pile. It was worn thing, the braided strings looking like they were just a breath away from dissolving and the colors faded, but Emmy hoped that Rory would recognize it. “Remember this?” She asked quietly, sitting down so she could prepare for the journey when the goblin started the cart.

Rory followed her to the cart, feeling slightly more comfortable when the security trolls left. He'd never spent much time around trolls and he didn't really want to start now. He moved to sit beside her, looking curiously when she picked something up to show it to him. Rory looked closely and a smile crossed his face. "Of course I do! I gave that to you years ago. I didn't think you'd still have it after all this time." He was glad she did. It was just another evidence of the strength of their friendship. She kept something that simple for so long, remembered that he gave it to her. He grinned at her. "I thought you would have lost it by now," hopefully she'd realize that he was teasing. The Emmy that he remembered sometimes had a hard time keeping track of things, which made it mean even more that she hadn't lost it.

Emmy grinned when Rory recognized the bracelet he had given her. She had worn it until it had gotten in its current state, where it wasn’t really wearable, but she wasn’t going to tell Rory that had only taken a few months. It had sat on her bedside table for months and months, her constant companion. It was kind of like a safety blanket for most of her school years, but Emmy didn’t want to tell Rory that, either. He then said that he thought she would have lost it, and Emmy shoved him, none too lightly. “That’s why I want to put it in the vault.” Emmy admitted after Rory had been suitably roughed up. She had gotten some strange looks from some of the goblins for the things she was trying to tuck away, but Emmy didn’t care that all of her physical possessions had more sentimental than monetary value. Just because they weren’t golden family heirlooms didn’t mean that they weren’t important. At that moment, the cart jolted forward, beginning their descent into the bowels of Gringotts.

She started pushing him around and Rory just laughed. It was evidence to him that she understood he was teasing her and was trying to tease him back, much the same way she did when they were younger. He grinned at her, "Well I'm glad that you want to keep it so safe," he teased her again, not caring if she pushed him around or not. Then the cart jolted and Rory grabbed the edge nervously with one hand, his other grabbing the seat tightly. He'd been so distracted by the opportunity to spend time with Emmy that he forgot how much he hated the carts at Gringotts. He wouldn't ever admit it unless he had no choice, but he was terrified of them. They weren't smooth and he had a fear that he'd fall out of one and get stuck in the depths of the Bank forever.

Emmy smiled at Rory, all teasing gone from her. “Of course I want to keep it safe. You gave it to me.” There were a few other momentos that he had given her that Emmy probably would bring to the bank eventually, but she didn’t want to put all her eggs in one basket, even if it was a very secure basket. Rory had let go of her hand, and Emmy raised her eyebrows when she realized that Rory’s grip on both the cart and the seat were white-knuckled. “Are you alright, Rory?” Emmy asked. She couldn’t remember him ever getting motion sick before, but maybe that was something you could acquire as you aged.

Rory smiled. He didn't know what else he could say. He was touched that the bracelet meant that much to her, that she'd kept it all these years. She probably already knew that. She knew him well enough to read his facial expressions. At least, she used to. Even though they hadn't seen one another for a while, he was pretty sure she still had that talent. Of course she noticed when Rory started to get tense when the cart started moving. Emilia was observant like that. Rory gave a terse nod, even though it would tell her that he wasn't all right. "I hate these carts," he muttered, his grip tightening as the cart picked up in speed, jostling more and more as it did so. It didn't make him sick ... it terrified him and he was not enjoying himself right now

When Rory nodded in response to her question, Emmy knew he was lying. No one nodded like that, with all the muscles in their head and neck tensed up, and with an expression on their face like they were being force-fed cough medicine. When he spoke, though, he told the truth, and Emmy frowned. “Why didn’t you tell me?” Emmy demanded, crossing her arms over her chest. Sure, having Rory there made her feel better, but she didn’t want him to do things that he hated for her sake. Maybe she had been that selfish when they were younger, but things were different now, and she didn’t want him to do this sort of stupid stuff.

She was annoyed. Probably with reason too, but Rory didn't want to admit that. The truth was, he'd been so interested in why she wanted him here, so distracted by the fact that he was with Emmy, that she'd kept his bracelet all these years that he forgot about his phobia until the cart started moving. "I forgot," he said plainly. She would probably want more explanation than that, but he wasn't sure if he was ready to give it yet. He was too caught up in the jostling of the cart. "Say something to distract me," he suggested, knowing that it would have to be something very interesting to actually distract him, but also confident that if anyone could distract him, Emmy could.

Emmy wasn’t sure whether or not she ought to be mad at Rory for forgetting that he was afraid of the Gringotts carts. It seemed like a strange thing to forget, unless he didn’t come to the bank often. Emmy tried to steer herself out of the train of thought, because she didn’t want to be speculating about her best friend’s financial means, especially considering she was so well off. “You’re an idiot.” Emmy said with a sigh after deciding that she wasn’t going to be mad at Rory – just a little annoyed. He asked her to say something to distract him, and Emmy’s mind went blank. “My Patronus is a koala.” She blurted out. That was perhaps the stupidest thing that she could have said, but Emmy was hoping that it was ridiculous enough that it would distract Rory from his fear of the cart.

She called him and idiot and Rory actually rolled his eyes, "Yeah, yeah. Tell me something I don't know." He didn't really believe he was an idiot, but Emmy called him that ever since they were children, among other things, so he was entirely used to it. Almost to the point where it didn't mean anything anymore. His stomach was in knots as the cart gained speed, but he was proud of himself for keeping his composure so well. He hated coming here. However, he smiled when Em told him about her Patronus. "When did you learn to cast a Patronus?" he asked, trying to distract himself some more.

Emmy smirked at Rory when he said that she ought to tell him something that he didn’t know. “Maybe I’d stop telling you that if it ever stopped being true.” She said affectionately. She was sure that there were people who thought she was rude, always calling Rory an idiot, but Emmy didn’t much care. He was her best friend, and best friends were allowed to do that sort of thing. “Where are your manners, Roman?” Emmy said with a roll of her eyes. “The polite thing to do would be to tell me your Patronus, and then ask where I had learned it.” Emmy crossed her arms over her chest again. She wasn’t going to tell Rory a single lick more until he told her what form his Patronus took – or that he couldn’t cast one, which Emmy doubted. He seemed like he was a fairly accomplished wizard. Either that, or her subconscious was painting him as an accomplished wizard because that was what she wanted for him.
