Rory shrugged and rolled his eyes, "Like you'd ever stop. It's your favorite nickname for me," he said with a teasing smile. He didn't mind it, really it just brought him back to childhood memories. Em was always calling him an idiot. He'd never been upset by it before, so why should he now? He grimaced at her when she basically told him to tell what his Patronus was. "Maybe I just don't want to tell you what it is," he said stubbornly. Really, he knew he was going to tell her, but sometimes it was fun to annoy Emmy a little bit. That ... was probably one of the reasons she called him an idiot so often.

Emmy rolled her eyes in response to Rory’s own eye roll. Two could play at that game. “I could stop, if I wanted to.” She said stubbornly. “I just don’t want to.” Emmy wasn’t sure about the veracity of that statement, considering she never had actually tried to stop calling Rory an idiot. It was such a habit by now that even if she did try to stop, Emmy thought that it would slip out once or twice. Rory was insisting that he didn’t want to tell her what his Patronus was, and Emmy just blinked at him calmly. She was good at getting things to go her way, and part of that was due to her amazingly scary glare. So she just glared at Rory. He had been the one to need a distraction from the cart ride – she would be perfectly content to spend the rest of it in complete silence.

Rory laughed, "Sure you could," he teased with a laugh. Of course, she'd never try. She didn't want to and no one could make Emmy do something she didn't want to. "Mmhmm," he said in response to her. He was surprised, however, when she started glaring at him. Rory was fully aware at how effective her glare was, as a general ruse. He'd seen it's effect on adults and other children, but he was curious how it would affect him. He couldn't remember a time when she focused it on him. He smirked at her, forcing himself to ignore the pit in his stomach and the feeling that his head was going to explode. He was determined to show her that he could be just as stubborn as she, if he wanted to. If it was anyone else, he would say something and change the subject, but he knew Emmy wouldn't let him do that.

Well, this was going to be an interesting cart ride. Rory was unwilling to give in to her stare immediately, which meant that she was just going have to intensify her stare more. Emmy narrowed her eyes in Rory’s direction, crossing her arms tighter across her chest. Being silent was something that she was pretty accustomed to, since she had spent a lot of her first year at Ilvermorny trying to hide her accent from her classmates. She didn’t know how good Rory was going to be about the cart now that he didn’t have a distraction. He had seemed pretty desperate to Emmy when they had first begun, but maybe Rory could focus on their staring contest instead.

Great. Now Emmy was staring at him and it somehow became a silent battle of wills. He was determined not to give in because ... well actually, he didn't have a reason. He just didn't want to give in. Maybe he wanted to show Emmy that he gained a bit of a backbone after she left, but he wasn't sure if he really wanted to do that. He didn't want to make her angry. Then the cart jostled really bad and a small squeak left Rory's throat. Tearing his eyes away from hers, he moved his head so it was placed between his knees. Maybe riding in the cart wouldn't be as bad if he couldn't see where he was going.

Rory hadn’t spoken yet, which Emmy found impressive – not that she was going to tell him that. They continued to stare, Emmy didn’t know for how long, until the cart was jostled by a particularly sharp turn. Rory let out a soft squeaking sound, and Emmy blinked a little, still not saying anything. If you counted a squeak as talking, then Rory had lost their silent contest, but Emmy wasn’t sure whether or not it did count. Rory definitely lost the staring contest, though, when he put his head in between his knees. Emmy reached out and patted his back gently a few times before recrossing her arms, still unwilling to be the one to speak first despite the fact that Rory was scared, and seeing him fearful killed her a little inside.

His eyes were closed and Rory was trying to ignore the jostling. He thought of home, of summers spent with Emmy, or even of taking boat-rides on the Black Lake at Hogwarts. The rocking of a boat was somewhat similar to the jostling of the cart, except much smoother. He flinched slightly when he felt something touch his back, until he realized it must be Emmy. It certainly wasn't going to be the goblin leading the cart. She stopped after a moment and he wondered why. Then he remembered her glaring at him before he put his head between his knees. She was mad at him. Why again? Rory wanted to ask, tried to speak, but nothing came out. His throat was dry from fear and the realization made him hold his knees more tightly. Why did he agree to come out here in the first place? Emmy. Rory forced himself to move one of his hands away from himself, reaching out towards her. Having her hand in his would make him feel better, he knew.

This was scary. This was scary, because Emmy had never seen Rory this way. Even when they were younger he hadn’t ever seemed afraid, at least not to her. The two of them hadn’t ever been afraid, probably because they were too young and stupid to realize that what they were doing was dangerous. It was silly, because now that they were doing something that wasn’t that dangerous, Rory was scared. At least, Emmy didn’t think this was dangerous, because otherwise they wouldn’t let rich people use it…right? There would be a fuss if a billionaire died because of a faulty transportation system. Emmy still didn’t say anything, mostly because she wasn’t sure what she was going to say. She didn’t want to sound like she was being flippant or brushing away his fear. When Rory reached out his hand, though, Emmy knew what to do. She took his hand in hers, squeezing once softly.

This was ridiculous. Really, Rory had never responded so violently to a ride in one of these carts before. Granted, he didn't think he'd ever ridden in one for so long before either. How far down was Emilia's vault? Rory took a deep breath, trying to calm his emotions when he decided that he was done acting like a child. Though he might never be able to let go of the bench and Emmy's hand (which he was now holding not-so-gently), he was going to sit up and act like a man! He sat up, his stomach clenching as he did so. He turned to Emmy. "I don't remember what we were talking about," he muttered quietly, trying to make it sound like his voice wasn't shaking. Hopefully she would understand that he was asking her to distract him. Hopefully.

The pressure that Rory had put on her hand since taking it was growing at a pretty steady pace, until Emmy was at the point of pain. She didn’t say anything about it, though, because Rory had bigger problems than whether or not Emmy was in a little bit of pain. His grip on the bench that they were sitting on was also white-knuckled, and briefly Emmy wondered how much further they were going to have to go before reaching her vault. When Rory finally spoke again, Emmy felt a little stab of triumph, and then felt bad for it. “You were telling me about Hogwarts.” She said softly, even though that wasn’t what they had been talking about at all. “Something about the grounds.” Emmy prompted. She didn’t know if there was anything special about Hogwarts’s grounds, but it was generic enough that Emmy hoped it would begin a new conversation.

As Emilia answered his question, Rory realized that his grip on her hand was ... uncomfortable, at best. He took in a slow breath and tried to relax his hand, at least. Hopefully she wouldn't be mad at him, but he really didn't see that happening. "The grounds? Oh, yes," he said, though he didn't remember a thing about talking about the grounds. "They're very ... extensive. We have a lake that has a giant squid living in it ... a forbidden forest with all sorts of creatures inside. I don't know if any of it is normal or not, seeing as how I've never been to another magical school. How were the grounds at ... what do you call your school again?" Rory was proud of himself for carrying a conversation so well. Well, he wasn't sure how much sense he was making, but at least he was talking. And now it was Emmy's turn, which meant he could try to focus on relaxing his body instead of talking. That'd be nice.

Rory relaxed his grip on her hand a little, and Emmy closed her eyes a little as her fingers began to tingle from blood rushing back into them. Rory began babbling about the grounds at Hogwarts, and while Emmy didn’t quite follow his train of thought, he was talking, and that was good as far as distracting him went. She made a soft clicking noise when Rory said that his school had a lake with a giant squid, and again when he mentioned a forest with all sorts of creatures. “Ilvermorny.” Emmy responded when he asked for her school’s name. It sounded strange with a Scottish brogue instead of a New England lilt. “It was near a mountain, so the grounds weren’t all that impressive.” Flat and rocky was more like it. Emmy continued to talk about Ilvermorny, her voice quieter than its normal volume. “It was fairly far from where I lived, but it was the closest Wizarding school that there was.” Plus, Emmy imagined that it had more resources at their disposal, which made it easier for them to take on Muggleborn students, who needed a bit more preparation before they could come to the school.

Rory's eyebrows furrowed slightly when Emmy started clicking her tongue. What, did she not like what he was describing. "Does that sound interesting to you?" he asked, trying to find a reason for the sounds she made. Then she described the Ilvermony school, saying that it wasn't very fancy. "But you liked it there, right?" he asked, wanting to make sure. He was trying to keep himself distracted from the nerves, which wasn't particularly easy, but that was the goal. He had to focus on Emmy instead.

Rory asked if she thought his grounds sounded interesting, and Emmy nodded. “It just sounds like you got into a lot of trouble without me.” She teased. She didn’t mind that Rory had made friends at school – she had expected it, really, since it wasn’t healthy in any sense of the word to only have one friend who lived an ocean away – but it was still kind of sad to think that there were seventeen years of his life that she didn’t get to spend with him. That was normal for best things to think, right? “I loved it.” Emmy replied firmly when Rory asked if she enjoyed her school. “It was a better home than Baltimore, but I don’t think my heart ever really left Scotland.” Even though she wasn’t back there – London was a far cry from Edinburgh – she was on the same island, which was close enough.

He smiled, tensing as the cart jostled again. Was this blasted thing ever going to stop. His face paler than it had been moments before, Rory shook his head, "I never get into trouble with anyone, unless I'm with you." Really though, Rory was more the follow-the-rules type, unless he was with his best friend. She brought out the adventurer in him, which was something that he loved. Except for now. At this moment, he would be perfectly content to be doing anything else with her. He had no desire to have an adventure inside Gringotts, and especially not in this cart. He smiled when she said she loved her school. "Well I'm glad," he told her honestly. He wanted her to be happy, no matter what.
