Ed nodded, glad that Jamie understood what he was talking about. "Yeah, so I've given up on finding the perfect moment. I just take the ones I can get right now. Except sometimes if I find a really good rock, I'll keep it with me for a while, and think of my father when I touch it. But ... that's about all." Why was he telling her all of this? Surely Jamie didn't really want to know all of it, but Edmund was talking more than he had in a while, so he just let it go. He nodded when she said the pond must be special to him.
Edmund gave a small smile, "Well you could count this as practice, and if you want I can ask you to join me the next time I decide to skip rocks." If she was interested. Really, Ed wasn't too concerned with it, but if she wanted to get better he was willing to help with it. "Yup! Just like riding a bike," he told her easily.

Jamie nodded when Edmund said that he sometimes kept a good rock with him, not because he was waiting for a perfect moment, but because when he touched it, it reminded him of his father. “Funny how we can be sentimental about things like that.” She commented, not intending to insult Edmund but rather remark on how strange nostalgia could be. Random things that meant nothing to others could mean everything to someone. “Have you ever considered writing down your memories of your father?” Jamie asked Ed. She felt like that kind of thing might help him keep all of his thoughts in order, and make sure that fewer things got lost to time.
“I would like that.” Jamie said when Edmund offered to tell her the next time he went stone skipping. “Hopefully the weather will be a little more favorable then.” She said with a laugh. She didn’t mind the rain, obviously, but she did wonder if it would be easier to skip stones when she could see better. The Hufflepuff tossed her next rock, watched it skip four times, and then turned back to her friend. “You don’t know how much I love that you understand that metaphor.” She said. Jamie really needed to start remembering which of her friends would understand her Muggle references or not.

"Yeah," Ed agreed when she commented about sentimentality. He knew that's what it was, and he wasn't ashamed of it, but it felt strange to have admitted it to someone. Then she suggested writing down his memories of his father and Edmund paused. "No, I never thought of that," he told her honestly. "But I really like the idea. I'm going to do that," Not only would it give him something to do, but it would be something he could look back on later when his memory wasn't as good. Which was probably why she suggested it.
Edmund gave a small laugh as well, "True. As much fun as we're having now, it might be easier to really practice in sunny weather." Hopefully. Then again, with good weather you had to make sure to go at a time when the sun wouldn't be shining in your eyes. He smiled when her rock skipped a few times and she commented about the metaphor. "I understand it, mostly," he admitted, "But I never learned to ride a bike. Mother preferred horses and I never got the chance to learn the other one." She would probably be surprised by that.

Edmund said that he had never considered writing down his memories of his father, and before Jamie could add that she thought it would be a good idea, the Slytherin boy said that he was going to do it. “If you need a journal, I have a couple extras I haven’t used yet.” Jamie offered. She had purchased quite a few since buying in bulk was cheaper, but relinquishing one of her journals for Edmund’s use wasn’t going to kill Jamie, and it would probably be easier for him than trying to find one on his own.
“Maybe we can make that a new sport. Extreme stone skipping.” Jamie said with a smile. She wouldn’t put another snowstorm out of the question, so if she was in the mood, maybe she’d get Ed to skip stones – as a joke, of course, because she didn’t want to be responsible for them getting lost on the grounds out getting hypothermia or anything. Edmund said that he understood her metaphor, but that he had never learned how to ride a bike, and Jamie chuckled a little to herself. “That is the most posh, royal thing I have ever heard said.” Jamie told Ed. That, or Will mentioning that he had his own wing of a castle, but Ed didn’t know about that conversation, so she could keep right on pretending that he held the title.

Ed wasn't used to accepting things from people, much less people he didn't talk with, but to his surprise he nodded when Jamie said she could give him a journal. "That would be great, if you don't mind." She probably didn't, since she asked, but he decided to be polite anyway.
He smiled back at her suggestion. He didn't think she was being serious, but he decided to go along with it. "If you practiced with me, you'd be the runner up," he joked, to his surprise. Ed wasn't one to joke around a lot, but he was now. Maybe it was the storm or something. It was making him behave in ways he normally didn't, but he didn't really mind. He was ... kind of enjoying himself. For the first time in what felt like years. He shrugged when she said him learning how to ride a horse instead of a bike was the most royal thing. "Well it's the truth," he mumbled. Edmund wasn't one to flaunt his royalty. In fact, most of the time he wished he wasn't royal. That would make life so much simpler.

Ed said that taking one of journals would be great, and Jamie nodded. “I can drop it off at your common room, if you want?” She suggested. “Or, if you’re looking for a reason to visit Hufflepuff, you could come pick it up. Whichever is easier.” It would also be just as easy to send it with an owl, but Jamie liked her conversations with Edmund, and an excuse to have another one wouldn’t be amiss.
Jamie let out a short, surprised laugh when Edmund said that she’d be the runner-up if she practiced with him. “Maybe I’m better at extreme stone skipping than I am at real stone skipping!” She insisted. Then again, this was kind of extreme…so maybe she wasn’t good at either. It wasn’t like that was that important, in the long run. “I guess I can be the runner-up, though. As long as I lose to you.” Jamie teased. Losing to anyone else probably would bring out her more competitive side, which was normally reserved for Quidditch, but with Edmund, everything just seemed like fun. A game. “I know it’s the truth. It’s just not the truth a lot of people experience.” She said. Not many got to grow up royal.

Edmund paused, considering her question. If she brought it down to the Slytherin common room he might get stupid comments made. Not that Edmund really cared, but to a point he did. "I can come get it," he offered, not giving her any reasons. She probably didn't care, and it would be less of a hastle for her anyway.
He smiled at her comments about extreme stone skipping. "Well if you aren't already, I'm sure we can practice and make you better," he told her, the corners of his lips turning up in a slight smirk. He shrugged, "Don't worry about it. When it comes to skipping rocks, everyone loses to me." This time, he was able to speak with a straight face, and he was interested to see if she'd believe him or not. Then he grew more serious. "I know. I just ... sometimes with I was one of the people that didn't." Grow up royal, he meant, but he was sure she would know what he was trying to say. Jamie seemed to be able to understand people quite well.

“Do you want me to tell Lucy you’re coming?” Jamie asked. Ed’s younger sister was a Hufflepuff like herself, and if he was going to be in their neck of the woods, maybe the siblings would want to reunite. If not, though, Jamie would be sure not to mention it, so Edmund could have his peace and quiet. She just needed to know.
Jamie nodded when Ed said that they could practice. She had thought she didn’t have the time, but what Jamie was finding was that she could make time for most anything, as long as she had some sort of inkling of what was coming. It was only when something unexpected popped up that she got thrown off her groove. Jamie listened to Edmund when he said that he wished that he was one of the people that hadn’t experienced what he did, nodding a little to show she understood. “We can’t choose where we come from, but we can choose where we go.” Jamie told Edmund softly. Her relationship with Will had ended because he was a royal and needed to attend to his duties, so she knew, just a tiny bit, what sort of stress the Windsor children might have been under. She knew how much her own heritage freaked her out, too. But she also knew that she was done with letting her past define her, and she hoped that Edmund could reach that same point.

Edmund smiled and nodded as Jamie mentioned his little sister. "Sure, that'd be nice." He hadn't spoken with his little sister in a while, so it would definitely be a good thing if Jamie told her that he was nearby. "I'm not exactly sure when I'll be coming though, so I'll let you know before I do?" Unless she was expecting him to come now.
Edmund grabbed another rock, remembering what they were doing beside the lake as she spoke, saying that she understood. He threw it a little harder than he meant to and it bounced once before sinking. He groaned in annoyance. "I know." He answered, his tone more bitter than he meant it to be. He knew Jamie was trying to help, but that didn't because so many people judged him because of who he was before they really got to know him. He was tired of it and sometimes wondered if people would ever be able to see him for more than his royal heritage.

Jamie smiled when Edmund said that it would be nice for her to tell Lucy about his visiting. At least there was one sibling that Edmund seemed to have a less antagonistic relationship with. When he said that he would inform her before coming to visit, Jamie nodded. “Yeah, that’s probably for the better. I’m not always in the common room.” Between Quidditch, classes, and studying, she found herself many other places around the castle, returning to the dorms only to sleep and occasionally to study, when it was quiet.
The Hufflepuff narrowed her eyes a little when Edmund’s voice grew bitter when she said that she could choose where they went. “At least when people look at you, they just see a royal brat. Not a monster.” Jamie said, her voice taking on an edge to it. She wasn’t about to let Edmund go pitying himself when he had grown up in the lap of luxury. “And for you, it’s not true.” The Hufflepuff added. The Windsors were surprisingly down-to-earth, given everything that they had available to them in their childhood. Jamie, on the other hand, was a werewolf, like people expected her to be. And even if she had grown more positive throughout the last few months, the Hufflepuff was still not wholly convinced that she wasn’t a monster. The one year anniversary of the night she had lost her control was quick approaching, and Jamie wasn't sure that she could ever forget that the wolf was just lurking beneath the surface.

Edmund smiled back, "I'll send you an owl that morning then," he decided to give her more details. "And if it doesn't work, let me know," he added, not wanting her to feel like she had to do everything on his schedule.
Ed's gaze snapped to Jamie when she mentioned him just being thought of as a brat and not a monster. Then she said that it wasn't true for him. "You're not a monster," he said. "Turning into a werewolf doesn't make you a monster. It's what you do with who you are that makes you who you are, and that is not a monster." Ed paused, not exactly sure if he was making sense, but hoping she understood what he was trying to say. He pulled another rock out of his pocked and tossed it a few times in the palm of his hand, trying to focus on it instead of the conversation.

Jamie nodded again when Edmund said that he’d send her an owl the morning of his visit. That would be plenty of time for her to be able to rearrange any activities to be able to be there for the book. “I’m sure it will work.” Jamie said with a wave of her hand. It was the opposite of what she had been previously thinking, about her busy schedule, but Jamie liked to make an effort to help people if it was at all possible.
What Edmund said about her not being a monster made Jamie feel better – as it always did when people reminded her that she was her father’s daughter only in name and disease – but she wondered if Edmund saw how that applied to his own life. “And you’re not just a Muggleborn royal. Who you were born to doesn’t change who you are any more than me being a lycanthrope changes me.” Jamie said, hoping that things would begin to click for Edmund when she phrased it that way. It had been a while since she had thrown a rock, but she wasn’t particularly inclined to do so when she was waiting for a revelation.

Jamie said it would work and Edmund nodded, not saying anything else on the subject. If she was so sure it would work out, she was probably planning on switching some things around.
Edmund nodded again when she said that his comment about her applied to him also. He understood what she was saying, but it was a lot harder to apply in his life. "I guess you're right," was all he said as he took a breath and tossed another rock. He noticed that she stopped throwing them, but that wasn't going to stop him. He needed something else to focus on other than the conversation. Talking about things like this were always hard for Ed.

Edmund said that he guessed she was right, which made Jamie think that he was only agreeing so that she would stop bothering him. “It’s a lot harder to beat yourself up when you think about saying the things you say about yourself to a friend.” She offered. Edmund had been unwilling to say that Jamie was just her past, so even if he wasn’t able to apply it to his own life yet, it was a step in the right direction. “We are our own worst critics, you know? Sometimes we just need someone in our lives to point out when we’re beating ourselves up.” Jamie had a lot of people who would tell her that she was great, but sometimes she wished that they were better at pointing out that she was the only one who thought the awful things about herself. “Do you think I should go back to skipping?” She was worried that she’d have already forgotten the muscle movements, not even a full five minutes later.

Ed still didn't really like this topic of conversation, but he assumed that Jamie was only trying to help him be more positive, especially when it came to himself. That was a good thing, right? He nodded, "Thanks. I hadn't thought of that way before." Which was true. He'd never treat Albus or Addi (despite how angry he was with her) the way he often thought of himself. Then his thoughtful expression turned to a smile when Jamie asked if he thought she should go back to skipping. "Of course. You don't want to give up right when you're getting it, do you?" he teased. He couldn't quite remember how her last throw went, but he was pretty sure that she did pretty well with it.
