Jamie wasn’t sure whether or not Edmund was actually appreciative of her advice about treating himself the way he treated a friend, but she was willing to give Ed the benefit of the doubt and assume that he was being genuine. “It’s funny how rephrasing things can change our entire perspective.” She mused. There was always going to be a way to put a pessimistic spin on life, but letting that get the better of them wasn’t going to help anyone in the long term. Edmund said that she ought to try skipping rocks again, so that she wouldn’t give up, and Jamie nodded. “I’m not a quitter.” She said, voice taking on an edge of stubbornness that normally only appeared when she was at Quidditch practice. Jamie dug into her robe pockets for a stone, and found one of the better ones (though the quality was, in general, decreasing as she got towards the end of her stone collection). Jamie sent the stone flying, and watched it skip thrice before plopping through the ice and into the water below.

Edmund didn't respond when Jamie mentioned how rephrasing things would change perspectives. She was right, but he was done with that topic of conversation. Hopefully if he didn't say anything it would end. He smiled when she said that she wasn't a quitter and then skipped a stone. He nodded as it went three times before stopping. "My turn," he said, pulling out another rock. He tossed it and it skipped four times before it went under the water. Then he turned his attention to the weather. "So when do you think this rain is going to stop?" he asked conversationally.

Edmund proclaimed that it was his turn to skip a stone, and Jamie nodded. He had had a lot of turns while Jamie had just sat and talked, but she didn’t mind continuing to alternate between the two of them, especially since Edmund’s turns gave her time to rest and analyze her last shot before continuing on to a new one. When Ed mentioned the weather, Jamie almost laughed. She normally felt awkward discussing such a thing, but since she and Edmund had previously been talking about rather heavy things, she couldn’t blame them both for moving on to something lighter and more banal. “Probably never. It is the United Kingdom, you know.” She said with a laugh. The stereotypes about constant rain definitely had some truth to them. “I’m surprised that it’s not snow, though. It’s been cold enough lately.” The fact that there were still several ice floes on the lake was proof enough of that, Jamie thought as she skipped another stone five times before it hit one such ice floe and sank.

It was a relief when Jamie let him change the subject. Ed wasn't quite sure if she realized that's what he was trying to do, but it happened and he was glad. Then she made her comment about the weather and Ed grunted. "Yeah, sunny days aren't really a common thing," he agreed with her, though it really was unnecessary for him to say anything. They both knew what the weather was like here. He shrugged at her comment about it not snowing. Snow might be nice at the moment because they wouldn't be getting as wet, but then again that would mean colder weather. Mostly he was thinking about Jamie's comfort though because at the moment Ed was trying to be out in uncomfortable weather. It made being distracted easier. "You're turn," he volunteered after a bit.

Edmund agreed that sunny days weren’t common, and Jamie just nodded. Now they were getting into the territory of awkward, because neither of them had planned anything to say after the bridging conversation about the weather. “What is your ideal weather?” Jamie decided to ask, since it was thematically appropriate and might get the conversation moving in the right direction. If that didn’t work she would probably just give up, since they both seemed to be running out of rocks and it was probably better that they didn’t stay out in the rain for much longer. Edmund reminded her that it was her turn to throw a stone, and Jamie nodded, turning one over in her palm. “This is going to be a good one.” Jamie promised Ed, flicking her wrist to send the stone out onto the lake. It sank immediately. Figures.

"I like the sun," Ed told Jamie instantly. He didn't like being cold or wet, unless it was on purpose. He loved good, summer weather. The fact that it wasn't common was just a part of Ed's luck. Things didn't work out that way for him, of course. "What about yours?" he asked in return. He might as well learn a little bit more about her. He smiled when she said that this was going to be a good throw and then laughed when it sank. He stopped his laugh almost immediately. "Sorry, that just kind of came out. It happens to the best of us," he told her as he pulled out another rock. His jumped two times before sinking and he made a face. "I think I'm getting worse the longer we're out here," he told her. He didn't want to go in yet, but he thought he was safe saying that he was getting worse.

Edmund said that is ideal weather was the sunshine, and Jamie let out a laugh. “For a boy who likes the sun, you seem to be enjoying the rain quite a bit.” She said. When Edmund asked her favorite weather in return, Jamie smiled. “The rain.” She responded easily. In that way, and probably a lot of other ways, Jamie and Edmund were opposite, so it was kind of interesting to the Hufflepuff that they got along so well. Then again, Jamie believed that you could get along with just about anyone as long as you tried hard enough, and she was willing to try for Edmund, especially since he’d been having a rough time of things lately. Jamie watched when Edmund’s toss ended with the stone sinking immediately, jumping a little at his laughter. “If you can’t laugh at your mistakes, you can’t revel in your successes!” Jamie chirped. That was something that someone had told her once, though who it was Jamie had long since forgotten. “Maybe you’re getting too much in your own head.” Jamie suggested as a reason for why Edmund’s performance had taken a sharp downturn. At the beginning, they were both tossing the rocks to get rid of all of their emotions, but after a little catharsis, it was easy to overanalyze everything.

Edmund shrugged at her question. "Just because I like the sun doesn't mean I can't enjoy the rain," he said back at her with a small smile. Especially lately he really enjoyed the rain. It helped to distract him from his thoughts and stuff. He nodded at her comment about laughing at your mistakes. "Very good point," he told her with a smile. Ed wasn't very good at laughing at his mistakes, but that's because most of them weren't as trivial as not being able to skip a rock. He shrugged, "I'll get better soon enough," he responded. He wasn't really worried about his rock-skipping abilities. He picked up a rock and tossed it, but this time it skipped six times and Ed laughed triumphantly.

“Just because I like the rain doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy the sun.” Jamie teased Edmund, just flip-flopping two of his words around to make her own point. “Personally, I really like sun showers. They don’t happen all that often, but when it rains and it’s sunny? Perfect. And wonderful for spotting rainbows.” When Jamie had been in a Muggle primary school, her science class had learned all about how rainbows were made, which had been pretty cool, at least to a nine-year-old. Jamie watched as Edmund picked up another rock to skip. That one went sailing through the air, and Jamie knew from the moment it left Ed’s hands that it was going to be a good one. “See? Laughing at your mistakes does help.” She said, though Edmund hadn’t argued it. Jamie threw another stone of her own, and then felt in her pockets. “I’ve only got two left.” She warned Edmund.

Ed rolled his eyes when Jamie parroted what he said. He wasn't annoyed, but he thought it was interesting that she copied him. It wasn't like he was attacking how much she liked the rain. "Sun showers are cool," he agreed after thinking about it for a few seconds. "But they don't happen often enough for me to say that they're my favorite type of weather." Ed laughed again at her comment, "So you think the only reason I did good on that one was because I laughed at myself first? Go ahead, let's see if your theory works for you." Then she said she only had two left and Ed smirked. "Sounds like a personal problem. I've got plenty." Alright, plenty might not be the right word for it, but he definitely had more than two, so he could tease her.

Edmund agreed that sun showers we cool, which was good, otherwise Jamie was going to have to seriously reconsider her friendship with him. He had a point in them not happening often enough to be a favorite kind of weather, though. “You live in England, and you think that sun is a common enough weather to be your favorite?” Jamie teased him. In the winter and spring, the sun was scarce as anything, so it was funny that he would be thinking about it. “Fine!” Jamie said, rolling her eyes at Edmund. “Little jerk.” She muttered affectionately before letting out a small chuckle, both to show Edmund that she was joking and to fulfill his challenge for her. She sent a rock skittering across the top of the pond, watching in awe as it skipped eight times. “I…was not expecting that actually to work.” Jamie told Edmund. As for the stone problem, Jamie knew that she would just have to surreptitiously sneak one or two of his into her pockets. Or just use her patented puppy eyes on him – whichever would get her what she needed.

Edmund made a face when Jamie pointed out that seeing sun in England wasn't a very common thing either. "No, but I appreciate it when it does happen, and it happens more than sun showers do." Didn't it? Edmund thought for a moment, hoping that he hadn't just put his foot in his mouth. He smiled when she seemed to get annoyed at her. Edmund wasn't really trying to annoy Jamie, but he thought it was funny. Probably because it wasn't something he saw very often. He grinned when she tossed a rock and it skipped eight times. "Well I guess you just proved your theory correct, which is a good thing. Now we know how to crush everyone else when we start those rock skipping competitions," he said with a smile. He pulled out a rock, laughed and then tossed it, proud when it skipped eight times. "I can't believe this is working," he muttered under his breath. "It's probably just some sort of mental thing."

Jamie smiled at Ed when he asserted that sunshine came more often than sun showers did. “That’s just fine by me!” She agreed. “When I was young, my mom had all of those motivational posters that you see in the windows of stores and stuff like that, and a lot of them were about rain. So I guess I’ve just been trained to love the rain since I was young.” It wasn’t even intentional on her mother’s part, but Jamie figured she ought to explain at least a little why she liked a less-than-conventional favorite weather. Edmund said that her theory was correct, and Jamie winked at him. “I like being correct!” She chirped, sure that Edmund would agree that being right was a good thing. “If we do it in front of everyone, they’ll figure out the secret!” Jamie protested. “It can be our special thing.” She decided. Jamie hefted her last stone in her hand, and then let out a hearty laugh before tossing it and watching it skip nine times. “That’s all for me. Unless you’d like to spare a stone for a poor Hufflepuff?” Jamie said, batting her eyelashes at Edmund.

Ed looked at Jamie with interest, "Well then that explains why you like the rain so much. Not going to lie, I generally like it more when I'm under shelter of some sort. Then rain is just soothing to me. Right now it's just cold." Not that he really minded that. The cold was good for distractions. Then he shook his head at her. "No, we're just going to have to be really funny so we have reasons to laugh. They're not going to know that laughing in and of itself is making us better," he argued light-heartedly. Then she asked for another rock and Ed rolled at her batting eyelashed. "Take these," he said, giving her a small handful and not counting them. He had plenty still. Why he'd picked up so many earlier, he had no idea, but he was glad for it now.

Jamie smiled when Ed said that her mother’s obsession with posters made it more obvious why she liked the rain. Ed said that he preferred it when he was under the shelter, and that now the rain was cold, and Jamie frowned. “Do you want me to cast a Warming Charm?” She asked. She knew Ed was probably capable of casting such a charm by himself, but Jamie figured that she would offer anyways, in case it had slipped his mind. Jamie was trying to get better about using magic in day-to-day life instead of just class, since once she graduated she’d be able to use it to her heart’s content. “Your face is already funny enough.” Jamie teased, pausing to gauge Edmund’s reaction. That was slightly meaner than her normal jokes, and she didn’t want Edmund to be upset. Her puppy eyes had worked, and Edmund handed Jamie a handful of rocks. She proceeded to launch one, though not after laughing for good measure.
