Fiona sat on a bench with a book on her lap. She was reading a novel for fun, a muggle novel involving time travel and romance. Something cheesy, but entertaining nonetheless. She had finished her school work and the weather was nice out, so the Hufflepuff ventured outside to enjoy it. There were a handful of students around, and even more just passing through. It had been raining all day yesterday and the sun had finally broken through. It was calming and warming and so very welcoming. Fiona continued to read in peace until she felt a small poke in her hip. She looked down and a tiny, brown field mouse was sitting on the bench beside her. "Well hello." she greeted the creature, a bit quietly so people around her didn't think she was entirely mental. The mouse reached out one tiny paw and patted her hip again. Fiona laughed and rolled her eyes. Her reputation must have been getting around within the mice population. She reached into her bag at her feet and pulled out a small satchel with a few cookies she had for lunch within. She broke off a very small piece and laid it in the palm of her hand. The creature sniffed her skin once and then crawled onto her outstretched hand to obtain his treasure.

Edmund had a break in classes and wanted to relax and walk around the grounds. Or something. Maybe he'd find a friend and talk, but really he just wanted to get out of the castle. He didn't necessarily care what he did outside, he just needed to get out there. The closest way outdoors was the courtyard, so Ed walked out that door, not surprised when there were a few people already there. He moved to a side that seemed less populated and was about to sit down on a bench when he saw someone else was already there ... holding a mouse? He looked up at the girl, surprised and then moved closer. A smile crept onto his face. "Well, I definitely didn't think I'd see this when I woke up this morning," he said softly, not wanting to scare the mouse away. What was it doing? Was it the girl's pet or just a mouse she somehow found? He was curious.

Fiona looked up when she heard a voice from above her insisting that they hadn’t expected to see this today. A man wearing Slytherin robes stood over her, apparently trying to sit down on her bench but being thrown off by the fact that the girl already there was holding a mouse in her hand. “Oh sorry, uh, he won’t hurt you or anything. You can sit if you were going to.” she insisted. She raised her hand and the mouse in it and bright it onto her lap instead of onto the bench. The mouse continued to nibble the bit of cookie. “Actually, you could probably even touch him if you wanted, he’s pretty calm right now.” she added.

The girl seemed entirely stunned to see another human being at that particular bench and Edmund couldn't help but smile. Really, this was an intriguing and interesting situation. He didn't expect to find anyone here, much less with a mouse. "I'm not scared," he told her casually, moving to sit when she told him that he could if he wanted. He looked a little closer. "Are you feeding it a cookie?" His tone was almost incredulous, but it was amazed incredulity, not skeptical. He reached over and touched the small creature. It was soft and warm. "I'm Edmund Windsor. What's your name?" It was a blunt introduction, but Ed couldn't help it. He was naturally blunt. That was just him.

The boy declared that he wasn’t scared, which made Fiona wonder if he actually was a little scared. Either way, he sat down and asked if she was feeding the mouse a cookie. She nodded, “Yeah, I know it’s not the best for them to eat, but it’s all that I had in my bag.” she admitted. It wasn’t like they were the worst for them or would make them sick, but cookies weren’t the best for humans either. If Fiona had thought further about it, she would make sure that she always had some veggies in her bag in case she ran into any creatures throughout her day. The boy introduced himself quickly as Edmund Windsor, a name that Fiona recognized, but wasn’t sure from where. “I’m Fiona Ebner.” she introduced herself as well. “5th year Hufflepuff.” she added in case the boy was curious who this girl feeding a random mouse was. He seemed fairly blunt and his question was very straight forward, but she appreciated it. Fiona wasn’t good with small talk or beating around the bush.

Edmund couldn't help but smile when the girl said that she actually was giving the mouse a cookie. That definitely wasn't something one saw every day. It was interesting and he was a little intrigued by that. Most girls would run away at the sight of a mouse, not feel like they needed to feed it. "Makes sense," he said. "Do you ... do that often? Feed mice?" Edmund couldn't help it. He wasn't making fun of her, he was legitimately curious. She introduced herself and he smiled again. "Nice to meet you. I'm a 6th year in Slytherin." Seemed like the right thing to say, since she told him more about herself. He paused, not really sure about what he should do now. Continue talking with the girl or just leave her be. He decided to stay for a moment. Hopefully he'd be able to come up with something to say.

The boy sitting next to her continued to seem perplexed by the small creature in her hand. He asked if she did this sort of thing often and she nodded, “I have an… affinity of sorts for rodents. Sometimes it’s mice, sometimes it’s squirrels or chipmunks. I’ve got a hamster downstairs who doesn’t really like to share my attention, so they stay in the dorm.” she explained. She knew that when she told people about her ability, they sometimes thought it was weird or gross. Especially since there was a common belief that most rodents carried diseases and could harm people. Which, some of them could. Common field mice, however, like the one in her hand, were generally fine. After she told him, he seemed like he wasn’t sure what to say, a feeling she knew all too well. Social Anxiety ran in her family. Her mom, the painter, had Social Anxiety also and found it really difficult to talk to new people. It sometimes made it hard for her to even go to the grocery store. Fiona didn’t experience it that badly, but she did feel awkward in new situations. Especially being as bad at small talk as it was. The girl cleared her throat and looked up. “Lovely weather…” she said to fill the silence.

Edmund's head cocked to the side curiously as Fiona started explaining that she had an affinity with rodents. Well that was definitely interesting and not something one heard of every day. He felt a small smile creep onto his face as she explained a little more, saying it wasn't always mice and naming some other rodents. "That's definitely interesting. Can you like ... understand their squeaks or ... how does an affinity work?" Edmund wasn't normally the curious sort, but this was interesting, so he might as well ask about it. Especially since they weren't doing so good talking with one another. "Yup..." he answered, in response to her comment about the weather. "What do you normally like to do when there's good weather?" Wow, Ed. Nice job actually talking and getting to know people. It wasn't entirely normal for him, but he was still proud of himself for doing pretty well at it. Better than he normally did, anyway.

Fiona laughed softly when he asked if she could understand their squeaks. She couldn't. She really wished that she could. "No, it doesn't really work like that. Like, I can't speak to them... but we do understand each other." she tried to explain, feeling like she was just talking in circles and not being sure at all that he understood her. She wasn't sure if she understood her. It was a weird thing, she knew. But she also knew that some other students around the castle had similar affinities but for other types of animals so at least she wasn't alone in having to explain this weird thing about herself. He seemed to take her awkward small talk bate, it seemed he wasn't very good at it either, something that she was kind of thankful for. It took a lot of the pressure off. "Sit outside and read." she smirked, looking down to the book on her lap momentarily. "What about you?" she asked.

She laughed when he asked her to explain more about it, but did so and Edmund listened with interest. She couldn't understand them ... but they understood each other? "Like, you can just kind of sense it or ..." he trailed off, trying to figure out how it would work. He'd heard about affinities before, but never actually spoken to someone that had one. At least, he'd never spoken to someone about an affinity they had. It intrigued him more than most things did and Edmund hoped he wasn't annoying Fiona. "Sorry, I'm not meaning to interrogate you. I'm just curious," he explained, hoping she wouldn't mind. He smiled, noting the book in her lap, "Unless one of your furry friends comes to visit," he teased. Then added, "I like taking walks ... and skipping rocks. It's a weakness of mine," Edmund admitted.

Fiona couldn't blame the boy for being curious. It was human nature, was it not? And it wasn't everyday that he would have ran into someone who could communicate with rodents, or any animal's actually. Fiona loved that about being at Hogwarts. Even though they were all magical, everyone was still unique and had individual talents and tricks that only they knew, or, that only a very limited number of people were able to do. “Yeah, I guess that’s the best way to describe it. Maybe it’s sort of a telepathic thing. Because they can kind of sense it with me too. Whenever I’m sad or lonely they always find me really quickly, a lot of the time in groups.” she admitted. “Or whenever I have food.” she laughed. “Do you like animals?” she asked the stranger. He explained why he was out here, his weakness was taking walks and skipping rocks. That actually sounded really cute. “Really? I don’t know how to skip rocks.” she admitted.

Edmund nodded thoughtfully as she continued to explain how her interactions with rodents worked. It was fascinating, though it sounded unique. He doubted that lots of people had this type of a relationship with animals, though she didn't seem to have them with all animals ... just rodents. Which made it even more interesting to him. "Well at least it means you never have to be alone," he commented with a smile. Then she asked if he liked animals and Edmund nodded, "I do. I don't normally get the chance to interact with them much, definitely not as much as you do, but I like them." Then his mouth fell open when she said she didn't know how to skip rocks. "You don't know how?" He repeated, more incredulous than anything else. How did someone not know that? He then made a decision. "Well if you ever want to learn, I'll definitely help you out," he offered. Edmund wasn't normally one to volunteer to spend time with people, but ... this felt like a special circumstance. Everyone should know how to skip rocks.

Fiona nodded. She wasn’t sure what else to say. It was true, because of her abilities, she was never alone. But it was also odd, and it freaked her roommates out whenever mice came crawling into their room. And it was always kind of awkward when a squirrel or chipmunk just climbed onto her shoulder when walking outside, or at an outside lesson. She was used to it, but the looks that she got from strangers made her want to curl up into a ball and hide in her dorm for the rest of her life. Kids were mean. “No. I never learned. It’s it hard? If it required any skill I guarantee I couldn’t do it.” she promised. She thought very low of herself and her talents and abilities. “I’d end up just tossing it straight into the water.” she brushed it off.

Edmund shook his head in mock disappointment when Fiona said that she never learned to skip rocks. He was going to have to change that if they ever did anything together, because he absolutely loved it. He couldn't imagine anyone not knowing how, because it was so relaxing and just ... peaceful. He couldn't remember a time when he didn't know how. Then she asked if it was hard and Edmund laughed, shaking his head. "It's not hard at all. Look," he lifted a hand in front of himself, displaying it to her as he flicked his hand in the motion necessary for skipping rocks. "This is easy." She said she would toss it in the water and he shook his head. "Skipping rocks is simple. I'll teach you how and then you can show off your mad skills to everyone," Edmund promised. "Unless you don't want me to show you," he backtracked after a moment, realizing he couldn't force her to learn if she didn't want to. "I won't make you," he explained, watching her expectantly to see what she wanted.

He was insistent, and she kind of appreciated that. He hadn’t given up. Not that she was testing him to see if he would give up, but since he hadn’t, she was more likely to believe that he actually meant that he would teach her instead of just saying it to be polite or make conversation. This wasn’t an empty promise, but it was something that he actually meant to do. If she wanted, of course, he added. She liked that while he was insistent, he wasn’t trying to force her to do it. She wasn’t sure. She was always hesitant to try new things. She was always more comfortable watching people do it than to try it herself. But, how could she say no? “Okay.” she nodded her head. “I’ll let you teach me.” she decided. She lowered her hand with her new mouse friend onto the bench when the cookie was gone and the creature scurried off, back into the nearby grass and then he ducked into a hole in the side of the stone wall.
