FOR A MOMENT AS HE THOUGHT ABOUT WHAT TO do, Eli realised Ashley was opening up to him. In his uncharacteristic bout of silence she'd confided in him. Sort of. She was so particular about where and when and why she revealed things about herself. It made Eli ravenous every time she told him some thing else. As if each little snippet was part of a large and consuming jigsaw puzzle. Coming down to it, Eli just wanted to know her.
He didn't mention what she said, simply looking at her for a long beat before he warned her. For some reason, Eli found it imperative that she always had time to genuinely back out. He was unknowingly coming to the conclusion that her boundaries mattered to her, so they mattered to him.
With his fingers intermittently burying in to the soft flesh of her sides and middle, Eli was half-way sprawled on top of Ashley in his bid to tickle her. Their laughter mingled together, echoing off the surrounding trees as he drew more and more out of them both. And when he stopped to look at her it was a face pink from exertion, her blond hair fanned around her head. So stark against the crisp green of the grass.
Both of his hands landed on either side of her head as he left her middle alone, propping himself up above her. And as their breath mingled and her arms shifted, his pinkie finger intentionally reached out to gently stroke the exposed skin of her forearm. Just a little bit, something that somehow felt more intimate than tickling her head been.
And suddenly he realised how close their faces were. How nearly they had become to... kissing. No. He was moving too fast, he was going to scare her. It was ridiculous. All thoughts that ran through his rampant mind as he blinked down at her pretty, absorbing face. Mostly, he realised just how much he'd come to rely on her friendship. Be it the disappearance of his mother weighing down on him. Or his sheer avoidance of it all together. Ashley was separate from it all. And he... needed that for a little while longer.
He rolled away and landed with a thump at her side, squeezing his eyes shut as his heart raced and his stomach tensed as if in anticipation. He ruffled his hair, pulling at the roots slightly as if to bring himself back down to earth. "Uh... what were you saying about the way I flick my wrist on that- um, charm?" He croaked, tongue darting out to wet his dried lips as he squinted at the clouds in the sky. "I forgot."

Eli was on top of her, tickling her hard, and while Ashley was laughing so hard she couldn't really think, she was enjoying it far more than she ever expected. At least he wasn't as intense a tickler as her oldest brother. He sometimes tickled Ashley so hard that it hurt. Eli was a lot more gentle than that, which she appreciated. The fact that she could hear him laughing with her made it better as well, mostly just because she loved the sound of his voice. When he finally stopped tickling her, Ash was still squirming a bit on the ground. She closed her eyes as she started to relax a bit. Eli was still above her, but he wasn't tickling her anymore. Her eyes opened and she was staring up at him, smiling as she noticed his curly, dark hair hanging down a bit as he looked at her. Then she felt something gently rub her arm. She shivered slightly and goosebumps covered her arms as she smiled up at Eli. Whatever he just did, she liked the way it felt. Where her thoughts only moments before had been scattered and all over the place, now they were focused entirely on him and his face looming over hers. The more time she spent with him, the more handsome she found him and the more she wanted to be around him and right now ... it would be so easy to close the space between them and kiss him. Wait, what? She couldn't- she wasn't even sure where that thought came from. Eli was her best friend, someone she trusted far more than others around her and she found herself suddenly nervous that she would find some way to ruin that if anything serious happened between them. Besides, she didn't think of him that way. At least, that's what she kept on telling herself. Suddenly he rolled away and Ashley felt herself relax slightly. At least the temptation was gone now. She sighed and chuckled as she felt a release. That was actually a lot of fun. She closed her eyes and grinned as her mind replayed the last few minutes. Yeah, they were good at taking breaks when they needed them, and on getting back on task. Almost as if he read her mind, Eli spoke again, asking how he was supposed to flick his wrist on a specific charm. "Uh, yeah." Ash started as she brought her thoughts back down to earth. "Umm, you want to twist it to the right in a jerky movement," she raised her hand in the air above them, pretending she was holding her wand as she demonstrated. "Like this, okay?" Back to studying they went. At least he was improving. Ashley only hoped it was enough to help him pass. He was smart, he just got distracted somewhat easily. -JUMP SCENE- THANKSGIVING BREAK HAD BEEN TERRIBLE AT the Fleming house. Without mom to bring the spirit up and the ever present flyers and notes littered around the family home, it was like a graveyard. But, for Eli, what was worse was that everybody kept trying anyway. They all laughed and told funny stories. Nobody mentioned how bad the food was courtesy of two sons and one poorly taught father. It was awful, but Eli hadn't said this. And for the first time ever, he was just happy to be back at school.
As it happened, school was where his friends were. Unchanged by a stale family affair. School was where Ashley was. The girl whom he hadn't stopped thinking about all throughout break. Between sending letters to friends, and eating dry turkey, there she was. Her laugh, her smile, the way she leaned in to him just a little sometimes. It was quite clear to him by the end of it all that he was, to put it plain, absolutely wild for her. He couldn't tell when exactly it had happened, or if it had simply been that way all along, but it was true.
Back in the halls, his skin was sweaty, even in the icy cold of winter. The grounds dusted with snow, everyone tucked deep in to their robes with hates and gloves and scarves to match. Eli had brought her something back with him, so he needed to see her. But, he didn't want to see her friends, so he waited. Before break had begun, they'd taken to studying in an old, forgotten room high up near the aviary tower. Eli had said he'd thought it used to be a watch house, but he wasn't certain.
So, as he'd passed her in the hall, sliding past her friends just as she'd disengaged from them to walk alone, Eli quirked his brows and pointed a single finger upward. That was their signal for where to meet. He didn't mean to be covert, he'd just never had the desire to approach with Bianca or Katherine near. This worked for now. So up to the room he went and he waited, a little wrapped box in hand in his lap.

Ashley loved Thanksgiving. Absolutely loved it. Basically, she loved any holiday that gave her the chance to spend time with her entire family and Thanksgiving was one of those. Her parents took work off that week and her brothers were all there and they had fabulous food. What wasn't to love? This Thanksgiving was a little different, however. As she played games and went to fancy parties (where she saw Bianca and Katherine and other high society friends) and all around had fun, she found her thoughts returning to one person she wouldn't see until she returned to school. Eli. It was strange how important his friendship was to her, but at the same time it wasn't. Eli was one of the only people she could truly be herself with. She didn't have to hide weakness or act superior, she could relax and have fun. That shouldn't seem like a big deal, or even out of the ordinary, but it was for her. It was more than that though. She just ... wanted to be around him, more and more every day it seemed. At least she had excuses to be with him, like to help him study. Not at home though. At home, all she could do was think about him or remember things they'd done. For a little, she thought about writing him, but she didn't know what she'd do if anyone noticed. What if her family didn't approve? She didn't want to get into that. Coming back to school was a relief, though it was sad in the fact that she had to leave her parents and she wouldn't see her brothers as often. The weather was similar to home though, so at least that stayed the same. Still, as she roamed the halls, she couldn't help but skim the crowd looking for a head of curly, dark hair. She was walking with her friends, but once they got closer to him she pulled away, just in time to see him pointing. Ash nodded, her expression not changing a bit, except for the twinkling in her eyes. Eli wanted to do something, even though they just got back! It couldn't be homework, not today. She looked over to her friends, who were deep in conversation and then slid away from them. She could come up with some excuse, but they were so busy talking they probably wouldn't even notice she was gone for a while. She hurried up to the room they started meeting in before Thanksgiving, checking to make sure no one was watching before she opened the door and slid in. Eli was already there of course. She grinned, "Hey you ... I missed you this last week," she admitted as she made her way over to where he was. It was ridiculous how excited she was to see him again, but she was. She should also feel embarrassed that she actually told him she missed him, but she didn't feel that way at all. She was too happy. Elijah Theron Fleming

FOR A SECOND ELI WORRIED ASHLEY JUST wouldn't turn up. That he'd sit there waiting for hours. So, when the door swung open and she stepped in he stood up rapidly. Hands sweaty and heart racing. She was here. And she missed him. His face creased in a beaming grin. "I missed you, too." He said sincerely. It was what friends said, he knew it was. But, when he said it to her it felt different. More intimate.
Excitedly, he crossed the room toward her, holding the box in one hand so he could wrap his arms around her in a hug. He hugged his friends all the time, he told himself. But, he never remarked on the way his friends smelled. A sweet perfume mixed with whatever soft shampoo she used. It lingered on his skin when he pulled away.
"I know it's not Christmas yet, but I... couldn't not." Eli said, gesturing with the box in his hand. He handed it to her, knowing that inside there was a little tub of homemade Neapolitan ice cream. "I uh... I made it myself-" He rambled, unable to stop himself from talking a little too much. "I just- I remember you said you loved ice cream and my brother and I- well-" He cleared his throat behind his hand, his face getting warmer and warmer. "We always do something together and... this year we made ice cream..."
Eli failed to mention that it was actually his idea to make it. Like Ashley had crawled in to his brain and infected all his free thoughts. "It's... it's kinda dumb, but it's good! I promise!" He said dismissively. If she didn't like it, it was fine. If it was too much, she could tell him.

She said the right thing. That was obvious by the huge smile on his face and Ashley couldn’t help but feel proud of herself. She and her friends never really said they missed one another ... they just started talking once they got together. But she thought it’s what most people said and it was so true she couldn’t not say it. When he returned the short phrase, her smile widened as well. It was one thing for her to miss him, he was one of her closest friends, but it was another thing entirely for him to miss her. He had tons of friends. At least to her, that meant something. The next thing she knew, he was there giving her a big hug and Ash couldn’t keep herself from returning it. She loved the way it felt to have his arms wrapped around her and it was nice to just be so close to him. Reassuring, somehow, though she couldn’t have explained the feeling even if she wanted to. She loved getting hugs from Eli, but she’d never initiated one before. It was when he pulled away and started talking about Christmas that Ash noticed the box in his hand. He ... had something for her? Her head twisted to the side a little as she looked up at him and he explained. He was talking a lot, almost a sure sign that he was nervous, but it was endearing. Whatever it was, he made it himself and - wait a second. Ice cream? Her eyes widened in delight as he continued to explain how he and his brother made ice cream and that was what he brought for her. She could tell that he was embarrassed a bit, but she didn’t care. She was too excited! ”You brought me ice cream?!” Ash squealed, leaning forward and impulsively wrapping her arms around his waist in a tight hug. ”You’re the best! she mumbled against his chest. When she pulled away, she realized she might have reacted a bit extremely and started to blush a little. She looked at the ground. ”I’m sure it’s great. I’ve ... never had home-made ice cream before,” Ash looked back up at him and shrugged, biting her bottom lip even as she smiled. She couldn’t stop smiling. ”Soooo ... are we going to try some?” Please say yes! she thought to herself. She wanted to try it with him there and eat it with him. He did make it, after all. ELI WASN'T AT ALL PREPARED WHEN ASH impulsively reached forward and hugged him. It was brief, but his heart still stuttered. She'd never hugged him first before. He swallowed heavily, Adam's apple bobbing as he gave a rough laugh. "It's- it was nothing," He said, waving his hand bashfully. But, it was something. Because, he wanted it to be something.
Instinctively grabbing her hand, Eli led them both to a table and hopped up on the wooden top. Using a chair to prop his feet, he pulled two spoons out of thin air. "Obviously," He declared, nodding his head for her to open the top. Handing her one spoon, Eli huffed hot breath in to the well of his own and proceeded to try and make it balance on the tip of his nose. "What'd you do over break?" He asked conversationally.

He said it wasn’t anything, but it was to her. He’d paid attention when she told him a secret those weeks ago and actually brought her ice cream! Granted, she was sure he made it just to have fun and not for her, but that didn’t matter. He brought her ice cream. Eli pulled her over to a table and Ash followed easily, just so happy to be doing something with him so soon. She jumped onto the table so she could sit beside him, laughing when he suddenly had two spoons. She opened the ice cream. ”Oh, it smells so good,” she moaned. Most people might not think that ice cream had a smell, but it did. She took her spoon from him, rolling her eyes when she saw him trying to balance his. Eating the ice cream took precedence right now. She scooped some of the chocolate part and sighed as it melted in her mouth. ”So good ...” Then his question registered. ”Not much. My parents took me to a few big parties to show off,” she shrugged like it was no big deal. It wasn’t really. Her parents loved to brag about her singing. She chuckled and continued, ”My brothers tickled me mercilessly and we had lots of food. How about you?” Elijah Theron Fleming

BAR THE SWEET SUGARY COLD ELI DIDN'T SMELL anything, but he liked that she did. Laughing slightly as she groaned over it. That was a good sign, promising even. His shoulders relaxed a little bit. He began to feel more like himself as he pressed the spoon against his nose, balancing it for half seconds before it dropped back in to his hand. Though he watched her from the side of his eye as she took a bite.
"Success!" He declared when she gave him the affirmative. But, he liked getting to know her more. The way she spent her holidays was important. It seemed extravagant. "Oh, the Fleming's celebrate small..." He said evasively, leaning over to scoop a spoonful of ice cream and fill his mouth. It was pretty good... "We usually just... stay at home mostly." He didn't want to dampen the mood by explaining just how miserable he'd been, so he smiled instead.
"What did you do at these fancy parties?" He tapped the back of his spoon against the tip of her nose. Leaving a tiny ice cream smear. "Do you dance...?"

Ashley couldn’t stop eating the ice cream. When she told Eli that it was a weakness, she really meant it. She loved ice cream. Each and every kind. She went for the vanilla, then the strawberry, nodding to show that each one was good. ”I might have to force you to teach me how to make this,” she muttered when he declared it a success. It was a dangerous idea, her knowing how to make ice cream, but it would be fabulous too. He explained that his family didn’t do a ton for the holidays and Ash nodded. ”Well, spending time with your family is what’s really important, right?” Big parties didn’t necessarily make breaks from school good. Being with family and friends did. She lifted an eyebrow when he asked his next question. ”Who said anything about them being fancy?” she teased, wrinkling her nose a little when he touched her nose with his spoon. It felt wet now, so she echoed his movement, touching his nose with her spoon. There. Now they were even. Then she shrugged. ”Yeah, there’s normally dancing, but the real reason my parents always want me to go is so I can show off and sing for all their friends. Apparently they never get tired of that.” Ash rolled her eyes. She loved singing, but when it came to parties sometimes she felt like that was the only reason people invited her. It was annoying. LICKING THE SWEETNESS FROM HIS LIPS, ELI nodded easily. "I can do that." And he could, would probably find it really fun to make dumb sweets with her all damn day. But, only in the tower. Or the clearing. Or between the stacks in the library. They only ever met away from other people. He wondered briefly what it would be like to live in a world where he wasn't afraid of her friends.
Looking away, he nodded. It was important to spend time with your family. So important, because one day they might not be there any more. "Yeah, it really is..." He said, but he didn't go further than that. Not yet.
Leaving the sticky smear on her nose, Eli crunched his eyes as she mirrored him. Sticking his tongue out as far as it would go as he tried to reach the tip of his nose. It felt near, but he couldn't be sure. He'd turned almost fully now, his leg bent under him so they could sit with their heads together. He liked it. How close they were. Just the two of them. God, how he'd missed this. Pulling his chin in, Eli exercised a look of disbelief.
"They were fancy..." He said with confidence, snorting slightly. Because, for all intents and purposes, Ashley was a fancy girl. With fancy friends. And fancy blood. Twirling his spoon in the tub of ice cream, Eli nearly dropped it when she mentioned singing. "You sing?" He asked, looking up at her curiously. "Why haven't I heard you sing?" He briefly thought if he'd ever heard or seen her in choir performances, but he hadn't to his knowledge. "Will you sing for me..?" He asked, not entirely expecting a yes, but asking anyway.

Ashley grinned when he agreed to teach her. ”All right, but be aware that I am going to hold you to that. I highly doubt I’ll forget about a chance to make ice cream!” she squealed on the last two words and then chuckled. She couldn’t help it. He agreed with her, but wasn’t looking at her and Ashley suddenly felt like they didn’t need to talk about that anymore. He didn’t seem to want to, and she really just wanted to have fun with him right now. Ashley laughed when Eli started trying to lick the ice cream off of his nose, forgetting about the ice cream on her own. ”So close ... and yet so far,” she teased. He was facing her now and Ashley suddenly realized that she was facing him as well. When did she turn towards him? She didn’t know, but that was okay. It felt right, just sitting here with Eli. Normal, and she’d missed it during the last week. He didn’t even hesitate at her question, arguing that the party was fancy and Ash laughed. ”Fine, you’ve got me. My parents take me to fancy shmancy parties.” she scrunched her nose and took another bite of ice cream. Man, she loved this stuff. He seemed very surprised when she mentioned singing. She nodded, ”Yeah, I love singing.” Ashley didn’t like to make a big deal out of it though. She shrugged, ”I don’t normally sing at school ...” Her eyes widened at his request. He wanted her to sing? She kind of liked the idea of showing off for him. ”What do you want me to sing?” Ash wouldn’t refuse him, though if anyone else asked she would have said no. Elijah Theron Fleming

ELI MADE A SHOW OF CROSSING HIS HEART WITH the tip of his spoon. "Scouts honour," He said, mixing the turn of phrases partially on purpose. But, he truly had no qualms about making things with her. In fact, it excited him. And the fact that she wanted to? Well, that was even better.
"The tongue is a muscle," He said, eyes crossing slightly as he tried valiantly to reach. "Just doin' my stretches." He gave up before he succeeded, though. Collapsing in to laughter before he could. It felt good. That the break hadn't changed anything. That even though he knew he liked her more than she probably liked him, it was okay. Because she was still his friend.
Nodding triumphantly, Eli didn't goad her any further. There was nothing wrong with a fancy party. He was more interested in her singing. He stretched the limits by asking if she'd sing for him. His hopes weren't incredibly high, but when she agreed he scooted forward a little. Lifting his head higher and grinning. "Really?" He said, hopeful in a matter of seconds. He pulled his other leg up to cross them on the top for comfort. "Sing... me your favourite song."

When Eli crossed his heart and promised he wouldn't change his mind, Ashley believed him. He seemed to feel excited about the idea, though she doubted he was as excited about it as she was. It was ice cream they were talking about, after all. At his words about the tongue being a muscle and stretching it, Ashley burst out into giggles. Eli was so confident and silly and she could just imagine walking into a study session to see him sitting there, trying to lick his nose just so he could tell her he was still doing his stretches. The goofball. The fact that he started laughing with her moments later just made it better. His reaction to her agreeing to sing for him was priceless. His eyes got huge and he scooted closer as he asked if she meant it. She couldn't help but laugh again. She was excited to sing for him, especially if this was how he was going to respond. He told her to sing her favorite song and Ash paused for a moment, tapping her chin before a good one came to her. She nodded and started to sing. She sang a little softer than normal, not wanting others to hear and enter the room out of curiosity, but loud enough that she could actually show off a bit. Singing for Eli was a lot more fun than singing for her parents' friends. Elijah Theron Fleming END SCENE - TIME JUMP TO NEXT ONE!!

THE SOUND OF SCRIBBLING QUILLS AND wrinkled parchment had filled the empty spaces of the astronomy tower for quite some time. Eli didn't like being quiet, but he'd come to find that he appreciated the times when he was quiet with Ashley. She'd been helping him study for a couple of months now and Thanksgiving break had brought upon certain revelations for Eli.
For instance, that he might be totally and utterly infatuated with her. That it might just be the biggest crush he'd had since his pee-wee Quidditch coach. He hadn't said it out loud yet, hadn't even told his friends. For all they knew, he was still fawning helplessly over his typical crush. No, Ashley wasn't typical. And, maybe that's why he didn't want to ruin their friendship. Because she was so far out of his league that they didn't even talk outside of study sessions and half day break away's.
Most of all, though, Eli just wanted to talk to her. All the time. He was beginning to think of her at the dumbest of times. Like, at an sweet counter with ice cream, or passing a patch of wild Feverfew. Every head of curly blond hair was hers and it was maddening. But, he didn't say so. What they had was too good to jeopardise.
Eli didn't even flinch when she looked up from her parchment and caught him staring. His cheeks warmed and he hid a bashful smile by biting his lip, but he didn't stop. "It's my mom's birthday today," He blurted out, unaware he was going to say this until he did. But, it wasn't that shocking when he thought about it later. He just wanted her to know him like he wanted to know her. "Sorry," He muttered with a scoff, lowering his gaze and scribbling a nonsense answer on his page.
