ELI SIMPLY NODDED IN AGREEMENT, HIS BREAK had been both fun and tasty. Even if she was joking with him. He loved his brother and his sisters, he loved the way his dad tried to fill all of the empty space at the dinner table. He couldn't tell if she felt the same way, but he didn't ask. There was always a kind of... void when it came to Ashley and her parents. He knew about their fancy parties and her singing, but that was it. They lived in different social hemispheres.
"Well then I gotta grow it out..." Eli said, widening his eyes comically and shaking his head as if severe. "Can't have you mistaking me for any old schmuck." In reality, it was always his intention to grow out his hair a little bit. He liked having something to restlessly run his hands through. But his family always interfered.
They exchanged gifts carefully and Eli found he was more giddy for her to open his than he was for his own. Which was unusual, he loved gifts. "Okay," He said, eyeing her from the corner of his as he peeled back the wrapping a little roughly to reveal the soft journal inside. His breath caught, she listened that he wrote in them, that he filled them fast. Running his hand over the cover, he smiled incredibly fondly. Cracking the cover, he caught sight of her elegant script, running his finger over the bumps.
"This is the best thing I've gotten," He said, and he meant it. Every gift was the best, but this was different. It felt different. Because it was from her. He barely had time to turn when her arms were around him and he realised he'd forgotten to watch her open his. At least she seemed to like it, he thought, burying his face in to her shoulder and rocking them slightly. "I'm glad you like it," He said, his voice muffled by her hair. "I'm going to write about this in my journal," He joked, pulling back to look at her. "You've got a good eye.".

Ashley shrugged as he teased her, "And until then, I guess I'm just going to have to pay more attention. I'd hate to find myself in a study session with the wrong person." Ha! Like that would ever happen. Ashley was more observant than that. Besides that, she didn't just study with anyone. He liked her gift? Ashley thought he might, since it was a pretty nice looking journal, but she didn't know. What if he already had a few ready or he'd just started a new one or that was too personal a thing? She'd worried about it since picking it up at the shop, but she never took it back. It just seemed to be something that would fit with him and she couldn't think of anything else to give him. She shivered when she felt his face pressing into her shoulder, but she liked the feeling. "Of course I like it," she whispered, closing her eyes so she could enjoy the moment more. She laughed at his joke, opening her eyes as he pulled away. "Oh, you'd better," she teased back. She looked back at the box in her hand. "Want to help me put it on?" she smiled softly as she looked down at the bracelet. It was perfect. Elijah Theron Fleming

BROWS LIFTING, ELI SCOFFED A LITTLE WITH WIDE eyes. "You and me both..." He muttered, gripping the edge of the table with both hands. He didn't like to imagine someone else filling his shoes. His time with her was too precious and fragile that while the thought was entirely plausible to him, he hated it. But, she wasn't exchanging gifts with just any body. No, with him.
The journal looked expensive, though, but Eli didn't ask just how much it cost. It made him feel squirmy. Pulling one leg up under him, he nodded happily as she reopened the box. He picked it up carefully, the delicate chain so entirely breakable as he looped it around Ashley's waiting wrist. It fit nicely, and he thanked his sister for allowing him to carefully measure three different ones before he decided - with zero context.
As he fastened the clasp, he briefly brushed the back of her wrist with his fingers, smiling softly. "It looks good," He said, his ears warm. And then, with no prompting at all, he hopped up from the table. Perhaps the release the mounting tension between them. "C'mon, we don't have any studying to do," He began, tugging on the hand that her bracelet hung on. "At the Fleming house..." He explained, hopping lightly from foot to foot. "We have a Christmas Dance Party..."
Carefully, he lifted the hand he held up, prompting her to twirling under their joined hands. From his back pocket, he pulled his wand. There was an old gramophone in one corner, and Eli knew only one charm to turn a thing like that on. And only because his family were one not afraid to dance. With a little flick, it began a gritty tune programmed in to probably a good few decades ago. Not the best, but doable. "Don't the Fontaine's dance?" He taunted slightly, his brows lifting in challenge.

Ashley grinned as he placed the bracelet on her wrist. It fit perfectly and was so pretty. The fact that the charms reminded her of the times she spent with Eli made it even better. She looked up at Eli when he said it looked good. "Thanks," her voice was soft and she glanced back down at it when suddenly he was jumping up. Ashley's gaze lifted immediately and her smile grew. What was Eli planning now? She stood, following as he urged her to move to the middle of the room. "A Christmas Dance Party, huh? That sounds like fun." She followed easily as he twirled her around. Ashley loved dancing. It was something she really enjoyed about all the parties that her parents took her to. She got to sing and then mingle and dance. It was fun. Eli turned some music on and she laughed at how old it sounded. That didn't matter though, they'd still have fun with this she was sure. Then he challenged her and Ash's jaw dropped a little. "Oh, we dance," she answered immediately. "Let's see what you can do, my friend." Yup. This was definitely going to be fun. Elijah Theron Fleming

HE DIDN'T HAVE TO TALK, NOT REALLY. JUST HER mad laughter at the ancient music. The way she twirled under his arm, it was easy. He liked how unquestionably on board she was. That he was undeniably goofy, and she wasn't, but she met him half way anyway. Unwilling to back down, even when challenged. Backing away, Eli held out both arms.
"I mean, I'm not talking just ballroom," He joked, dancing from foot to foot and peddling his arms funnily. He was on the balls of his feet and bent at the knee and then he wasn't. There wasn't much sense to his movement, but it had a bit of a beat. "Do you got rhythm, Fontaine?" He pointed at her, smiling so much that his eyes were crinkled as he eventually dancing toward her before he grabbed her hip and spun them both.
For a second, the world blurred around them and he could see only her face. Her hair curtaining around them momentarily. And he thought if he was brave, he would probably kiss her. But he didn't. He let them laugh and spin instead. Happy to be dumb and goofy for a minute.

It was clear to Ashley that Eli knew what he was doing as he twirled her around, and she liked that fact a lot more than she expected to. There weren't very many people their age that really knew how to dance ... were there? Other than the people at her high-society parties, of course. He mentioned not doing ballroom and Ashley's eyebrows furrowed a little with hesitation. Yes, she knew about not-ballroom dancing ... she'd seen it in movies and such, but she's never seriously tried. He started "dancing" (if that's what you could call it) and Ashley's jaw dropped before she started laughing hard. What in the world was he doing? There was no way that that counted as dancing. "I'm sorry, Fleming. I don't think that counts as dancing anywhere," she teased amidst her laughter. "I've got rhythm, but not that kind." She was still chuckling when suddenly he grabbed her hips and they were spinning. Ashley squealed a little and reached forward to grab his arms. Her heart was racing and she just wanted to dance with him forever, though that would never work out. She leaned forward a little as they spun. She was starting to get a little dizzy. "You want me to fall over, Eli?" she teased. She could have pulled away, but it was much more fun to tease him instead. Elijah Theron Fleming

HE WASN'T PUT OFF BY HER LAUGHTER AT ALL, IN fact it only spurred her on. "Is so!" He retorted, shaking his head along to the ancient beat. And as she bent at the waist, overcome by giggles, he stormed her and they spun in a circle. His gripped her hip tightly, pulled in close so their sides were sandwiched together.
"I'd catch you..." He muttered, but he pulled them to a stop. It wasn't the kind of music for spinning anyway, but it had still been fun. Not quite ready to let her go yet, he slid his hand in to hers and held on to her hip. Gently, he lead them in to a swaying slow dance. Still holding her hand, he moved it toward her face and gently pulled a piece of hair from her forehead. "This okay?" He asked, looking down at her.

Her laughing seemed to encourage him, but Ashley didn't mind that as much as she thought she would. Eli made things easy, things like laughing and relaxing and ridiculous dancing. He answered, saying that he would catch her and Ashley's smile softened. That seemed more ... sincere than all of the teasing. She liked the idea that Eli would catch her if she fell, even if it was something she expected. Of course, he wouldn't just let her fall. Then they suddenly weren't spinning anymore. They were dancing slowly, swaying and he was holding her hand, while his other hand held her hip. The moment became a little more serious, but she ... she wanted it to. She wanted ... ugh! Ashley didn't know what she wanted and now wasn't the moment to think about it. He lead their hands up to her face, touching her hair and moving it, asking if it was okay. "Yes," Ashley breathed, staring up into his eyes. She hadn't expected anything like this to happen tonight, but she and Eli were undoubtedly growing closer and she liked it. Whatever this was, she most definitely liked it. END SCENE- TIME JUMP TO NEXT ONE! Elijah Theron Fleming

JUMP SCENE - SPRING FLING ELI'S HAIR STOOD ON END, HIS FINGERS HAVING made tracks through it all afternoon. His brain was frazzled, his face pink from frustration. It was exam season soon, and his mind was slowly turning to churned mush. But, Ashley still tried to help him study. They still met up, no matter how hopeless Eli felt, but this time it was different. Eli felt like he was standing on the end of a great fall. And it wasn't just because he couldn't pronounce a jinx correctly.
"Hey..." Eli said, breaking a good half hour of silence that had fallen between the two of them. They were sprawled out on the study room's cold wooden floor, the sound of the rain beating against a stained glass window. It would have been peaceful any other time, but not today. It was quite obvious that something was bothering Eli. "The Spring Fling is like... Friday, right?" He muttered, voice hushed as if they were in the library. "Did- I heard Tag Harrow asked you?"

The end of the school year was approaching and Ashley was trying her best to help Eli study. She wanted him to pass all his exams, to do well and she wanted to spend time with him. Studying with him was like killing two birds with one stone, right? Sometimes, it was almost like something was changing between her and Eli, like they were getting closer, but then other times they just messed around like they always did. She couldn't decide what she wanted to do. What she did know was that she'd been hoping for the last while that Eli would ask her to the Spring Fling, but also hoping that he wouldn't. She'd say yes, of course, but she didn't know what she'd say to her friends. She'd come up with something to tell them. She didn't care ... even though she did. But then ... Tag Harrow asked her. He'd just walked up to her in the hallway and come right out and said it. Ashley had agreed almost immediately, unable to say anything else with the crowd of people around her. But when she walked away, her heart felt heavy and she realized that as much as she'd rationalized it away, she did want Eli to ask her. And he hadn't. She still met with him to study, but she didn't bring it up. That would just make things awkward and she didn't want to do that. Then again, things were already awkward. Today, they'd been studying for thirty whole minutes, but didn't talk at all. She wondered if he was annoyed about something, because he wasn't normally so quiet. But she wasn't going to break it. When he finally spoke, she looked up and gave an instant smile, almost routine. She nodded when he asked if the Spring Fling was Friday. "Yeah it is." He wasn't- he couldn't- he wasn't going to ask her now, was he? Oh, please no! She didn't want to have to say no. She opened her mouth to tell him she was already going, but then he said he heard Tag asked her. Ashley shrugged, her smile much more forced now. "Yes. He asked me yesterday. It'll be fun." She was forcing a perky voice, but her heart wasn't in it. Hopefully Eli wouldn't know that. Elijah Theron Fleming

STUDYING WAS HARD ENOUGH FOR ELI WITHOUT his blatant feelings for Ashley getting in the way. He'd wanted to ask her to the dumb dance, but what was he supposed to do? Everybody else was planning grand, ridiculous ways to ask. Especially the kind of people Ashley hung out with. If he went up to her, plain as day, and asked her, she'd say no. Right? She wouldn't ruin the friendship. His thoughts were a convoluted mess and it was making it hard to write. So, he'd asked...
The answer Ashley gave only proved to sour his mood even further. And it would be 'fun'. He couldn't even focus on her tone, drilling the tip of his quill in to his piece of parchment until the paper split. He lifted it to reveal a dirty blot of ink. "Yeah," He said, without looking up. "Fun." But his tone was almost mocking, one he didn't use often and hardly ever intentionally.
"Tad Harrow is a douche! You know that, right?" He blurted out, looking up from the ink blot, his ears pink. "I mean... his name is Tad, for Godsake!" His nose was wrinkled now and he'd abandoned studying altogether. Why was he lashing out? Hard to tell...

Ashley watched Eli as she spoke. He seemed to be still writing, but at the same time it was obvious he wasn't focusing. Over the past months, Ash felt like she got to know him pretty well and, as a general rule, it wasn't hard to tell when Eli was distracted. He certainly was now, but Ash wasn't entirely sure why. His expression darkened and Ash watched as he ripped his parchment. What the heck? Her expression grew serious when he echoed her, his tone something she'd never heard before. At least, not from him. Almost bitter or mocking and she didn't understand why. He wasn't upset that she was going to the dance, was he? It wasn't like he'd asked her, though he definitely had the chance. They were alone constantly. If he'd wanted to, he could've asked her without anyone else knowing, but he hadn't and WHY was she thinking about this? It wasn't like Eli even thought of her that way, or like she wanted him to. Ash refused to delve into her own feelings when it came to the older boy. He was her friend, the closest one she had, and she didn't want to lose him. Even if it meant ... no. She wasn't getting into that. Eli's voice rose as he started talking about Tag and Ashley's eyebrows furrowed as her mouth fell open for a moment. His name made him a douche? What kind of crap was that? She scoffed, "Oh really? Since when does someone's name make them a douche? He didn't have any control over what his parents named him. Besides, he's always been perfectly nice to me." Ash's tone was entirely defensive. She hadn't really interacted a ton with the other boy, but Tag often smiled at her in the hallways. What reason did she have to say no to him, other than the fact that she wished someone else asked her? At least she'd be going now! She bit her lip before looking down at her book. She didn't want to look at Eli right now. He wasn't making any sense. Elijah Theron Fleming

ELIJAH'S OUTBURST HADN'T BEEN AT ALL premeditated so even he was surprised by what he came out with. His mouth snapped shut afterwards, cheeks hot, but the frustration was still there. And he still meant it. He flexed the quill between his fingers, gripping it so tight his knuckles went white. He'd never really bickered with Ashley before.
"Yeah," He scoffed without thought, shaking his head as he draw his knees up to his chest. "That's because everybody is nice to you, Ash." And in his mind it was true. Because she was popular and he really wasn't. He drifted, but he was bullied like everyone else. "I don't have friends in high places..." It was a bitter statement, one that had wobbled under the surface, overshadowed by just how much fun he was having with her.

This was ... weird and hard and all sorts of confusing. Ashley didn't like the tension in the room, but she also wasn't the type to really back down, especially when she felt like someone was wrong. As he spoke, her mouth fell open and she stared a little. So many retorts came to mind, so many ideas of things to say that she couldn't sort through them. She couldn't even- why was this happening? Things were always so smooth with Eli, but not today. She glared at him. He had no idea what her life was like. He had no idea how lonely she felt and how- ugh! She barked an angry laugh as she stood up and moved away from him. "Yeah, I'm Ashley and my life is perfect. I have so many friends and they all really care about my feelings and about making sure I'm doing well." The sarcasm was laid on thick, obvious in her tone. "You have no idea who is and isn't nice to me." Granted, most of the people that weren't nice to her weren't nice for a reason. Ashley wasn't the nicest person. She knew that, but it still stung when she walked down a hall and everyone turned their backs on her. It was one of the reasons she appreciated Eli so much. He'd given her a chance when very few others would. At least, she thought he did. Still, she wasn't looking for his pity. She was trying to decide if she wanted to even stay here anymore. "At least you know your friends really care," she muttered before starting to make her way toward the door. She said too much and now she needed to get out. Elijah Theron Fleming

HE'D NEVER SEEN ASHLEY'S LOOK SO HARD. THE plains of her face turning in to ice before his very eyes. He felt the chill in the room the moment he said it. Unable to stop his mouth from running wild. Maybe that had been the problem all along. He'd never been able to put them on the same playing field. Maybe that's why he'd never had the guts to ask her to the dance himself.
"I- I didn't say that..." He whispered, his legs dropping to the ground as he looked at her. The awful way she'd said those things. He'd never seen her react so negatively about her own life. Suddenly, Eli felt like an idiot. He shifted on to his knees, scooting closer to Ashley, each movement tentative in case she fled.
"Look, I didn't mean it like that, okay?" He reached out, hesitating before he rested his hand on her arm. "I was just mad about Tag." He explained, flexing his hand on her arm before he dropped it, allowing his fingers to briefly brush against the back of her hand before he drew away. "He's a tool and I wanted you to go to the dance-" He swallowed, half laughing as he reached up to ruffle his hair. "Nevermind, lets just forget it, yeah?" He slumped back on his behind, reaching for his torn parchment with a sigh.
