She said too much, revealed too much. Ashley knew this, and she knew that her tone and anger would push him away. Why would Eli want to even talk with her once he saw this side of her, the side that most people thought was her only side. That was why she turned away from him a moment before she started speaking. She didn't want to see it when he realized that she never was what he thought she was. She closed her eyes, preparing to leave when she heard his whisper and her heart stopped. He ... his voice, he wasn't yelling back at her. He sounded apologetic and she couldn't resist the urge to turn around. He was shuffling towards her on his knees and she stared. He wasn't demanding she leave or leaving himself? He was coming closer to her. Ashley felt her hard mask melt away as he said he didn't mean it that way and touched her arm. His hand started to fall and she tried to catch it with her own, still hardly comprehending. "I'm sorry," she breathed as she went to her knees as well. She looked down at the ground, unable to meet his eyes. He was still here, even though she got angry. "I ... I couldn't say no. He asked me in front of a bunch of people." Then he mentioned that Tag was a tool and that he wanted ... Ashley looked back up at her friend. "What did you want?" Ashley asked, hoping and not even realizing that she was squeezing his hand as she waited. Was there any chance Eli was angry because he wanted to- no. Stop. She couldn't think that way. They just fought. She didn't need to confuse things more. She nodded and let go of Eli's hand when he said they should forget it. "Yeah, okay. No problem," she forced her voice to a higher pitch, trying to make things normal again. But how was she supposed to do that? Elijah Theron Fleming

WHEN THEIR HANDS CLASPED ELI'S BREATH HITCHED slightly in his chest. The feeling of their fingers sliding together, the warmth of her palm. It wasn't supposed to blindside him like that. He was supposed to be cooler than this. But, he still pressed their palms together, a small smile tugging at the corner of his mouth.
"Why are you sorry?" Eli said, looking up in confusion. He wasn't looking for an apology, she hadn't done anything wrong. He felt like an even bigger tool than Tag for that. Squeezing her hand a little, he shook his head. "Ah- don't..." He sighed, reaching up to scrub at his nose. "You don't need to explain, I didn't- that's not why I-" He was struggling to figure out his own thoughts. But he definitely didn't want her to feel like she owed him some kind of reasoning.
Reaching for his parchment, he flattened it on his lap, rubbing at the blot on the page. But, as soon as she let go of his hand it was like he felt cold all over. Why couldn't he just say what he wanted to say. They sat in silence for so long afterwards that he thought he might have forgotten how to speak.
"I wanted to ask you..." was the first thing that Eli said, looking up from his parchment, his adam's apple bobbing. "I just- I'm an idiot and Tag Harrow's is better at this than me." He scoffed, rolling his eyes at himself. He was smiling, but it was self-deprecating.

At least he was smiling now. A little smile, but she didn't care. That was better than before and she could almost feel the tension in the room slipping. Thank goodness. "For getting angry," she muttered when he asked why she apologized. Did it really not bother him how she lost it so quickly. Her breath caught slightly when he squeezed her hand, telling her she didn't need to explain. She shrugged a little. "I wanted to." Why was she so shy right now? Her voice so soft and fragile? It didn't make any sense to Ash. She wasn't used to showing weakness, any form of it, but for some reason it didn't matter when she was near Eli. Eli didn't say anything when she agreed to drop the subject. She turned away from him and grabbed the book she was looking at before. She couldn't read it, couldn't focus. Her mind was on Eli, why this was such a big deal, and wishing she could find a way to break the silence that wasn't awkward. She looked up when he spoke, a small smile touching the corners of her lips. "You ... you wanted to ask me?" She heard him, sure, but she was having a hard time believing that she heard him right. "You're not an idiot," Ash was shaking her head firmly, her voice finally back to normal now. She bit her bottom lip for a second. "I would have said yes," crap. There it was, all soft again. Apparently today was not a day of strength for Ashley. He admitted something, now it was her turn. "I was ... hoping you'd ask me ..." she blushed a little and looked down at her book, hoping he wouldn't notice. Elijah Theron Fleming

HE DIDN'T CARE THAT SHE GOT ANGRY BECAUSE so did he. Eli knew what it felt like to be so full of things that you began spilling out. And hers had spilled out in sarcasm, the way his had erupted in bitterness. It was funny how negativity worked like that. Eli only wished he'd had to guts to say the positive things as easily. "Okay..." He muttered, and a new tension began to build in the room.
Eli tried to pretend it wasn't a big deal. Tilting his head and nodding when she asked him. He looked up, brows lifted. Did she think he was lying? More so, she didn't dismiss it entirely. Eli's mouth pinched shut when she, instead, said she would have said yes. He set his parchment aside, scooting a little closer. Never mind that he was already sitting beside her. He wanted to be closer.
"That right?" He said, suddenly a little brazen by her acceptance. Even if it was too late. "Why?" And when he said it, they were sitting so close that it the word rippled across a lock of her hair. She wasn't looking at him. He reached over and gently shut her book, removing the distracting. "Are you blushing?" He joked, but his heart was thudding in his chest.
And when she finally looked up, he brought a hand up to cradle her face, pulling them together on a whim so that his lips touched hers. A tentative, half-kiss almost. But, Merlin, it felt like a long time coming.

Eli wanted to ask her. He wanted to take her to the dance. Knowing that felt surreal, like she was in a dream. Was she? Would she wake up in the morning and realize that all of this was some sort of crazy, fantastic dream? She hoped not. Her heart started to race when he moved closer, asking if that was right. Ash nodded her head, losing her words entirely when he asked why. "I mean, I- you- I think..." Wow, she really couldn't do this and it was crazy. Maybe it was because she hadn't even admitted to herself why she wanted him to ask her to the dance. She was too nervous to admit it, but if he wanted to ask her maybe that meant he did too. She still couldn't bring herself to say it. The book wasn't even close to a distraction. Her mind was so focused on Eli and every move he made that she couldn't even read a word. Ashley watched as he closed it, pulling at away. He was so close. He teased her, and Ash nodded as the blush grew just a little bit more. "Maybe," she muttered, a little rebelliously. Ashley Fontaine didn't normally blush. She normally had much better control of her emotions than she seemed to right now. She looked up, wanting to say something- Merlin only knew exactly what- when he was gently holding her face, moving closer and then he gave her the lightest of kisses. Ash sighed, leaning closer and more into the kiss. Eli was actually kissing her! Her hand reached up to cover his on her cheek as she kissed him back, surprised at herself for doing so. When they broke apart, she opened her eyes and laughed softly. "Wish they would have had a dance a long time ago," she mumbled softly. She watched Eli, surprised that she didn't feel self-conscious anymore. She felt ... comfortable. Right. Happy. Ash couldn't think of a thing to say that could convey her emotions in that moment. "I think I like you," she whispered, finally finishing the thought she'd tried to say earlier. The thought she hadn't allowed herself to even consider for months. Elijah Theron Fleming

IT WAS LIKE EVERY MUSCLE ELI POSSESSED uncoiled all at once. The moment their lips touched, the way he felt her tense in surprise and then grip him to her. Moving in to the rhythm. And it was only for a second, just a breath as he pulled her closer and then they were apart again and Eli had to stop himself from leaning in again.
Laughter rippled in the air between them, and Eli's thumb brushed against the soft plain of Ashley's cheek as they shared breath. "Me, too." He whispered, smiling as he let his tongue dart out across his bottom lip. "I like you too," He said gruffly, the weight of it catching in his throat. "So much." He shook his head, cheeks creased by the sheer force of his smile. "Just- save me a dance, yeah?"

Just like that, all the tension between them was gone. He was kissing her and Ash wanted him to. Everything between them felt real and right and comfortable. It was just what she always wanted ... she just didn't know who with. Until she met Eli. It seemed crazy but she absolutely loved it. Ash couldn't stop herself from laughing with him as he touched her cheek softly, agreeing that this should have happened weeks ago. Then he said he liked her and Ashley felt relief rush through her. She liked him a lot more than she realized ... which made sense since she hadn't allowed herself to think about it before. He asked her to save him a dance and she nodded immediately. "Of course! I'll be looking forward to it." With that, Ashley leaned in to rest her head on his shoulder as she gave him a hug. This felt so nice. "Should we get back to studying now?" she asked with a laugh. JUMP SCENE - CAFETERIA POST-DANCETHE FIRST THING ELI HAD THOUGHT WITH HIS head buried in his desk was how, in Merlin's name, had he managed to get detention for something he had done months before. He thought perhaps the professor had a bone to pick with him. Ever since that one time he'd unlocked all the pixie cages, which he still maintained was an accident. But, there he had been, on the night of the dance. He'd spent the whole night copying from a textbook in his best button down.
And then, of course, there was Ashley. What had she thought when he hadn't turned up? They had finally kissed and suddenly he bails? He'd asked her to save him a dance, and dammit he'd been excited. It would have been the first time they acknowledged one and other outside of their private moments. He had wanted to merge their worlds. He had wanted to tell his friends about the best girl he knew in Ilvermorny.
When the next morning rolled around and Eli still hadn't seen Ashley to explain, he feared the worst. Did she think he was avoiding her? Was she avoiding him? And so, unable to pull her aside in the corridor Eli didn't even think as he stormed in to the cafeteria. Especially when he saw her gathered with her friends. He jogged to get to them, his hair still in complete sleepy disarray. A toothpaste stain on the front of his shirt.
"Ash?" He called, hands on his hips as he came to a stop beside them. And it was like every single person turned to look at him. All of her friends. The ones he avoided, the ones that sneered at the sight of him. He smoothed his shirt down nervously. "Ash, can we please talk?" He muttered, turning his body as if to block out everybody else.

Ashley couldn't remember the last time she felt so angry and hurt and disillusioned as she left the dance. Pretending that she was happy and that she enjoyed it all was a chore, but Ash was a master at pretending. It was easy to fool Tag and the people around them. However, after the dance everyone in their group wanted to sneak off and pull some sort of mischief, but Ashley declined. She just wanted to go to her room. She wanted to be alone and let out the frustration. So she smiled and waved when Tag kissed her hand and then followed his friends. Luckily, when she got to her room no one was there and she could release it all. Eli hadn't come. After everything that happened during their last study session- their bickering over her going with tag and subsequent kiss- he never came and she was so disappointed she didn't know what to do with herself. Disappointed and pissed. She grabbed the pillow on her bed and screamed into her pillow, not wanting anyone else to hear. She didn't know how long she'd have until her roommates came, so she had to let it out as quickly as possible. When she lowered the pillow, something caught on it and she looked down to her wrist, seeing the bracelet Eli gave to her. She tore it off and threw it under her bed. By the time her roommates came, she was in bed, the curtains pulled around it. She wished she could sleep but she couldn't stop her mind from trying to figure out why he hadn't showed. She listened to the others giggle and chat quietly as they got ready for bed and slowly fell asleep. She couldn't. Her mind whirled as she tried to puzzle the pieces together. What could have kept him from coming? Did he plan on never showing up from the start? Was the entire thing a set-up? It wasn't long before one of her major migraines took over. Ashley groaned and got out of bed, moving out of the room so she wouldn't bother anyone else. She thought about taking the potion she had tucked in her drawer, but couldn't. She didn't want to use anything from him. As the night wore on, Ashley's anger climbed and she didn't sleep at all. The next morning, she went back to her bed, pretending to wake up with the others, using a little more makeup than normal to hide the black circles under her eyes. Her head was still pounding. Still, once she found herself with her friends, Ashley began the pretense. She did nothing to show her sleepless night, the anger that she still felt in the pit of her stomach. Was she being dramatic? Probably, but she couldn't help it. Eli hadn't come. There was no question of that. He told her to save him a dance, and he didn't come. She was standing with her friends, laughing as the rest of the group did. She didn't even know what she'd been laughing about when she heard a familiar voice call her name. She grew cold. Here? He was approaching her here? In front of Katherine and Bianca and all the rest of the people who tormented him? All the people that knew nothing of their interactions, nothing of the fact that Ashley liked a boy the rest of them loved to torment. What did he think he was doing? She felt everyone's eyes turn to her, their gazes accusing and knew that she was about to do something she'd regret. If she didn't, her friends would abandon her and she'd spend the summer and all the fancy parties alone. Which was one of her greatest fears. Ashley turned to face Eli, her expression solemn. She didn't want to do this! Despite the fact that she was beyond angry at him, she didn't want to. Her eyes met his and she hoped he could see the apology in them before she started. Wrinkling her nose like she smelled something bad, her eyes narrowed and she looked him up and down. "What makes you think you can talk to me?" She said in her snobbiest tone, scoffing and turning away from him. If she had to do this, the least she could do was be mean and take everyone away so they wouldn't continue to tease him. "Let's leave. I've lost my appetite," she told her friends, hoping beyond hope that they would come with her. Please leave him alone she hoped. To her great relief, her friends turned and left with her, laughing as they did so. Ash was sure she could feel Eli watching her, but she didn't turn around. She couldn't show weakness in front of these girls. No looking back. Elijah Theron Fleming END ASHLEY ...?

ELI COULDN'T REMEMBER THE LAST TIME HE'D PUT himself in a situation just like this. One where he only had himself to blame for how he would be treated. When he was younger, and a little more naive, he'd often throw himself to the likes of Bianca and Katherine. So foolish was he to assume he could be invisible. Even worse now, as he stood in the shadow of the beastly, unarmed. His fleshy belly exposed.
But, all he had seen was Ashley. In that desperate, tired panic, all he had cared about was Ashley. And so he'd taken a chance without thinking and oh, boy was he shocked by the outcome. Later, he would chastise himself for thinking it would go any differently. As he questioned just who he knew, and how different people were when you weren't looking.
Sweat made the palms of his hands clammy, and Eli reared his head back as if he'd been slapped. Just the look on Ashley's face. The dark shadow of her pinched features before they smoothed in to something terrifyingly unreadable. His mouth flapped open: who was this girl? Eli couldn't tell, her hair had never been shinier, her demeanour so pristine he wondered if the version of Ashley he knew had been nothing but a figment of his over-indulgent imagination.
"I- I don't know..." He muttered, his words barely given sound as he drew the edges of himself back together. He felt shattered, gutted from the inside but he managed to straighten his spine in an impression of strength. His eyes flickered to Katherine and Bianca, lingering behind Ashley with that smug, demeaning look on their faces. It made them look like a three-headed billy-wig. "I guess I... thought you were somebody else." His expression had taken a cold home of its own. His mouth pinched and eyes narrowed.
Though his shoulders did slump forward as they turned their backs on him, trailing tinkling, chilly laughter behind them. And Eli felt like his chest might burst as he released a long held breath. Ashley's hair swayed as she melded with the crowd. And Eli felt as if he'd been collectively stamped on. He was suddenly very aware of their differences. And, most importantly, why they'd never interacted outside of their private, isolated bubble. Because outside of it, he was Ew-lijah Phlegm. And there was Ashley, with her porcelain face and her iced words. He'd forgotten about the dance now. Nothing left behind but a bitter taste in his mouth.

TIME JUMP- ELI'S BIRTHDAY Ashley was doing this against her better judgment. She debated it continuously over the past week, since everything broke. Well, since she broke everything. Then again, Ash didn't entirely see it that way. She knew that she hadn't been nice to Eli the day after the dance, but was that really her fault? He was the one who stood her up at the dance and he was the one who approached her in front of all the people who hated him, who expected her to respond negatively to him. Could he really blame her for what she said? The obvious answer to that was yes.
Since that day, the two of them had absolutely no contact with one another. At first, Ashley felt bad. She wanted to explain that she hadn't really meant that, that she said what she had to make her friends leave him alone and that she was sorry. She searched for him in the hallways, only to see him always talking with others. At first she thought it was a coincidence, but that didn't last long. The way he never looked at her, even turning so his back was to her made it painfully obvious that he was doing it on purpose. Then there was the fact that he didn't come to the tower for their next study session. He was avoiding her.
Knowing that changed things for Ash. She felt angrier than she'd admit and blamed it on him, even though she knew a part of it was her fault. Still, everything that happened with him over the past year now seemed like a ruse. The idea of him caring for her even a little bit or even needing help in his classes (though she had to admit to herself that he was a pretty poor student in some areas, so that might have been true). She doubted he actually wanted to take her to the dance or that he wanted her as a friend. The whole thing was probably some sort of dare, to see if he could actually get to someone like her. The part that made her the angriest was that he succeeded, if that was his goal.
Still, today was his birthday. She'd found out about it ages ago, when things were good between them and she planned an activity, just for him. She got him a book about creatures with some decent-quality dragon leather gloves to work with. It seemed like something he'd like, but she'd wanted it to be more fun than that, so she spent time creating a map of Ilvermorny and fashioning it into a treasure map. It started in the Dining Hall, since she planned to send it to him during the morning mail, and ended at the meadow where their friendship really took off. All those weeks ago, she wrote a letter, explaining the idea of what she was doing, mentioning that she'd meet him at the end.
So for the past week Ashley found herself debating what she should do. Should she send the stupid letter and map, give him his present and leave their friendship at that or just keep it all. The problem was, every time she saw the book, gloves and parchment, she thought of Eli and she was tired of it. Last night she decided to just send it.
She didn't want to meet him at the end though. Ashley didn't want to talk to the jerk who just pretended to be her friend for all those months, who went through the motions and then abandoned her when she was mean. Weren't friends supposed to be better than that? Even so, she was curious to see if he'd actually come or if he'd ignore her letter. If he did, she'd just leave the gifts to be destroyed by the weather, but she still wanted to know. Ashley went to the meadow, placing the wrapped gift (both gifts were in one box) in the middle where he could see them easily if he came. Then she went to sit behind a bunch of bushes, where she could read her book. She wasn't going to talk with him if he came, after all.
After a few hours, Ash found herself growing tired. She laid down on the ground, still behind the bushes, and took a nap. By now she was fairly sure Eli wouldn't come. Good to know.

ELI DIDN'T LIKE ADMITTING THAT HE WAS MISERABLE, but he definitely wasn't feeling like his best self. So much so, that his friends had noticed. As he stewed in his own warped interpretation of the entire fiasco. All he'd wanted to do was apologise, but the more he thought about it the more he thought he didn't need to. That it was probably all fake anyway's. Something for Ash and Katherine and Bianca to giggle about. It all made Eli feel queasy.
So, when he woke up on his birthday to find an unexpected letter among his mail, Eli was surprised. And then pathetic as he ripped it open and read it through once, then twice. It was from Ashley, and the thought alone almost made him throw it in to the fire immediately. But, some buried part of him couldn't. He was sour, and then he was curious and eventually angry. He went to breakfast without it, even sat and pretended to study with his friends. Faking a laugh and a joke as they all pushed their individual gifts on to him. But, eventually lunch time came and went and he was back in his dorm.
The letter was still there, pristine stationary pressed and expensive. The instructions were perfect. If this had been before and they were still speaking, he'd have loved it. But, he couldn't. Because it was all tainted. Her expression and her friends laughter echoing in his head every time he looked at it. It sat in his lap for a long while before, with a heavy sigh and a scrunching of his face, Eli pulled on his heavy soled boots and stormed from his dorm. He was only going to prove a point, he told himself.
Following the instructions, huffed and puffed like it wasn't exactly the kind of gift he loved. Adventure. She was playing with him. And he'd stand and take it, just for his own sense of self satisfaction. That, in the end, he was right. But, when he emerged at their abandoned meadow, it was not to be met with a group of snickering girls. No, the grass was long and untainted as it swayed in the breeze. And, in the middle a mound of objects stood. He approached with caution, narrowed eyes finding the exquisite book and the supple gloves sitting atop.
Reaching out, Eli's face slackened as he ran a hand over the stitching. "Oh..." He breathed, his mind going blank. Perhaps this was planned well in advance. He should take the gifts and return them. They weren't friends any more. No sign of Ashley proved this. He lifted the book and turned to sit on a rock, gnawing on the bad of his thumb as he thought of what to do next. It couldn't hurt to crack the spine just once...

Ashley only meant to nap for a few minutes. What she didn’t realize was how soft the ground was, how peaceful the meadow felt with the wind rustling the leaves on the nearby trees and bushes, the birds chirping softly. She slept much more deeply than she meant to, so much so that she had the closest thing to dreams that she’d had in a while. Really, it was more like changing memories or thoughts. One moment, she was smiling and laughing with her friends, then she was sitting beside Eli and he was about to kiss her. She was fighting with someone, though she didn’t know who. Both of them were yelling at one another. Then she was alone. Entirely alone in the dark. She called for her family, friends, even Eli, but there was no answer. No light either. She moved, but didn’t run into anything. She had no wand. She was utterly alone, when suddenly she was falling. Ash woke with a start, gasping as she sat up hard, whacking the bushes beside her when she realized she wasn’t in her dorm. What was she doing? Where was she? Her heart pounded, her body tense and her breathing quick. It took her a few seconds to remember what was going on. She stood up, running her hands through her hair and rubbing her forehead and cheeks, trying to make herself wake up more and calm down. She was in the meadow. It was Eli’s birthday and he hadn’t come to see the gift she got for him, which was just further proof that they weren’t friends with one another. ”It doesn’t matter” she whispered softly to herself before lowering her hands and opening her eyes. It was time to leave the stupid meadow. She wouldn’t come back after this. She turned and froze. Eli was there. He was sitting on a rock, the book she purchased for him resting in his hands, open on his lap. She stared, part of her thinking this was still part of one of those dreams. She wanted to say something to him, but what? What would he want her to say? Would he even listen? She instinctively reached for her left wrist, where Eli’s charm bracelet always hung, but it wasn’t there anymore. Of course it wasn’t. It sat inside the drawer of the nightstand beside her bed, like it had since she searched for it the other night, when she pulled it out from under her bed. She still wasn’t sure if she wanted to keep the thing since it didn’t mean anything anymore, but at the same time she missed wearing it. Ashley couldn’t say a word. Her hands cold and clammy, she knew that her face was pale as she stared at the boy who used to be the one person she trusted above everyone else, her best friend. The person who pretended to care for her all that time. Her heart pounded as she stared, waiting for something to prove that this wasn’t her imagination. Elijah Theron Fleming

HEAD BURIED IN THE SACRED TEXT ELI WAS absently running his fingers over the dragonhide gloves. It was easy, in that brief moment, to forget where they'd come from. Until, of course, a rustling at his back slowly pulled him from that moment. It took a minute, but eventually he looked up, searching for the sound in the brush behind him. What he saw startled him.
Eli jumped up from the rock, the book sliding from his lap so that he had to scramble to catch it before it fell, the gloves were not as lucky, they fluttered to the ground at his feet. He bent to pick them up, pulling his eyes away from Ashley as he gathered his thoughts. Was it really exactly what he thought? When he looked up again he searched the space around her for her vicious friends.
"Did you come to laugh at me some more?" Eli snapped, his lips pulling down at the corners. "Because honestly, Ashley, I'm not in the mood." He folded the gloves over the top of the book, his mind reeling over how he could give them back without getting close enough to see the details of her face.

The tiniest of smiles creased the corners of her lips as Ashley watched Eli fumble and struggle to keep the book from falling to the ground. He also had to bend to pick up the gloves, which fell during the confusion. Watching him, Ashley longed to walk up to him and give him a hug and tell him “Happy birthday” but something wasn’t right, which wasn’t surprising at all. The electric, tense atmosphere surrounding the meadow kept Ashley stuck in place. Her tiny smile faded before he looked at her again, frowning at her as he broke the silence between them. Her mouth dropped, eyes widening at his question. He thought she wanted to laugh at him? Her surprise almost immediately gave way to anger. He thought that little of her after all the time they spent together? She shook her head as her hands closed into fists at her side. “You really think I’d do all this just so I could laugh at you? Nice to know how little you think of me,” she scoffed softly before meeting his eyes as she continued, “If I wanted to mock you, I would be much more direct about it. There wouldn’t be secret notes and maps leading you here.” Here, to a place that meant so much to her. Obviously it meant nothing to him anymore, which made her feel sick inside. “You would know exactly what I was doing if I really wanted to laugh at you.” She wouldn’t do it, no matter how angry she was at him. Despite the fact that Elijah Fleming was proving to be the world’s biggest jerk, Ashley had no intention of seeking him out, to laugh at him or not. After today, she’d do her best to avoid him. She wouldn’t intentionally hurt someone she’d once trusted so much ... even if that’s exactly what her friends would have done. She took a deep breath to try and calm herself down. All Ashley wanted to do was leave, but she’d give him a chance to say whatever he might want to say before she did. After everything they’d been through, she at least owed him that before she never spoke with him again. Especially since it was his birthday. Elijah Theron Fleming
