Kinsey rolled eyes as she looked over to her friend, trying to make her expression serious but knowing he would probably see right through it. Toby knew her that well. "Hey, who are we to discriminate against inviting unicorns to tea time. Maybe they would like it," she said, rubbing its nose once more. "Huh? You wanna try some tea?" she asked, mostly just to tease her best friend. Then he started teasing her about singing and Kinsey scoffed quietly. "Toby, you've heard me sing. I would never inflict that on such a beautiful creature as this." Sure, Kinsey wasn't terrible, but she didn't consider herself talented when it came to music. She was good at books ... and sometimes flying (not that anyone knew that last part). At least Toby was somewhat calm now. Kinsey didn't feel as worried that he would scare the unicorn away. She shot him a fake glare when he started teasing her again, but then smiled. "Crap, I've let him in on my secret. What do I do now?" she whispered to the horse, glancing at Toby and then looking away. He was such a dork. Why was she doing this with him anyway? Kinsey smiled as she watched her friend apologize to the unicorn before he started to thank her. "You are not allowed to die, even though you've seen a unicorn. And I'm always down for stuff like this, you know that." Really, she liked taking breaks from the norm. With Toby, that was kind of easy, which she really appreciated. tobias charles watkins

"I don't doubt that one bit." he stated, turning to the unicorn to ask it in the most serious tone he could muster, "How do you take your tea, mate? I'm guessing Chamomile with a dash of honey." he answered his own question, the unicorn nodded its head with impeccable timing, causing Toby to grin completely satisfied.
Kinsey mentioned that she wouldn't want to subject such a beautiful creature to her singing voice, he nodded in fervent agreement. "You're right. We don't wanna scare 'em away forever." he jested playfully, a dorky laugh slipping past his lips to show it was truly a joke. Kinsey didn't have a bad voice at all, it was just fun to tease her back on occasion when the timing was right. They could both take it. Toby was just about to respond to Kinsey about her being game to go on adventures all the time, when he heard a stick break behind them, toward the school. They were deeper in the Forbidden Forest than he could remember. The unicorn heard the sound too because they flinched and turned to start walking the other way. Did a Professor or a Prefect see them?!
In that moment, Toby was slightly conflicted, because he really wanted to hang out with the unicorn longer, but he also didn't want to get into trouble. Especially if he knew that they could potentially get away. Toby yanked Kinseys arm downwards so that she would crouch down with him. "Someone is here.." he mouthed just barely above a whisper, brown eyes widening to large warm brown saucers suddenly. As they lowered, the unicorn curiously took a step toward Toby, its lips curled over his glasses, completely fogging the lenses. He tried not to laugh, but he did, covering his mouth instantly to stifle the laugh. "You're going to think I'm crazy right now but we should run the other way..." Toby proposed, uncharacteristically rebellious, seriously ready to sprint into the abyss. A small part of him wanted to do it for the thrill. What the hell had gotten into him?! Well, he really didn't want to get caught in the Forbidden Forest, ever, because he enjoyed going in there...it was better to keep it a secret and to stay off their teachers radar.

Kinsey wished she was right beside Toby because in the next instant all she wanted to do was elbow him hard in the stomach. He was mocking her, which wasn't really a surprise since it was Toby and they were messing around together, but still. It was the principle of the thing and he deserved it. She glared at Toby, rolling her eyes when the Unicorn almost seemed to answer him with its nod. Of course it would nod at just the right moment. "Ha ha, you're so funny," Kinsey answered sarcastically to his teasing. She knew Toby didn't mean it, but that didn't mean she couldn't pretend to be offended. "You do know you weren't supposed to agree with me on that, don't you?" Kinsey somehow kept her expression straight, though she really had no idea how she did it. She jumped and froze when she heard something snap somewhere in the woods. Kinsey couldn't tell where it came from, but the unicorn was obviously a little spooked by the sound. Kinsey instinctively looked towards Toby, not really sure what he was going to have them do now, but letting him take the lead. This was his adventure after all. Her eyes searched the forest around them as she tried to see whatever it was through the trees. At least, she tried to search until Toby started tugging on her arm. She ducked down beside him, nodding when he whispered that someone was there. She watched, smiling as the Unicorn stepped closer to Toby, but her mouth dropped open when her friend laughed. Weren't they supposed to be quiet right now? "Run the other way?" She asked, also surprised by his suggestion. Running further into the forest definitely wasn't something that Kinsey really wanted to do, but she knew it wasn't something Toby would want to do either. She looked at him seriously, reaching over and grabbing his hand. "Only if you promise not to leave me. If you abandon me in here, I might never forgive you Toby Watkins." Kinsey was trying to sound threatening, but she doubted that she did. Toby knew her too well. "Now?" she asked, not entirely hiding the nerves in her voice, but not about to back down either. tobias charles watkins

@kinsey | Note: |
As Toby and Kinsey had a quick exchange, crouching low, he pushed himself into a bush a little deeper to hide his lanky ass body from being seen by anyone. "I wouldn't ever leave you." Toby protested, his eyes glaring at her, trying to hide the offense from his tone by the accusation. He knew it was probably out of jest, it was just an intense moment, he had to make it clear. He may have not been a fearless Gryffindor, but he was loyal to his own. Toby would take the fall if they got caught, he already told Kinsey that, he was always one to keep his word. Toby turned one last time to the unicorn, wishing they didn't have to leave so suddenly, but it wasn't worth possibly being caught. They'd probably be in more trouble for 'messing around with the animals' in the Forbidden Forest if anything. "Goodbye, Unicorn. I will miss you." he whispered dramatically with a frown, pecking it on the nose really quick. He was still glowing so much from the encounter that he wasn't really remembering to keep his voice as quiet as it should have been. Especially if he didn't fancy being caught.
Toby clasped Kinseys hand tightly, ready to take off at any second, "Stay low...be mindful of branches and the ground below you." he whispered, his brown eyes full of intensity. He pointed at a vine on the ground, and then a log. "Go!!" He thought he whispered, but that definitely wasn't a whisper... That was gruff and scary. Toby yanked Kinsey by the hand, tightening his laced fingers in her grasp because he refused to lose her in the abyss. He went straight for the darkness, ducking under tree branches, spider webs, and vines with an agility he didn't even know he had. His feet pounded against the forest floor, and he could already feel the shortness of breath tickling his chest, his heart beating so rapidly it could explode... but they couldn't stop! "We're almost there" he breathed staggered breaths, ducking under another low tree branch that nearly got him. They did an arch around a set of trees and there was heavenly light streaming in straight ahead of them. Thank Merlin. They almost made it!

Kinsey could tell that Toby was a little upset by her implicating that he might have left her and she gave an apologetic shrug, "Sorry, just ... making sure," she answered lamely. She realized belatedly that out of everyone she knew, there were few people she shouldn't feel the need to make that sort of promise and Toby was now at the top of that list. He turned to the unicorn, apparently not angry enough to continue glaring at her. She smiled when he spoke to the Unicorn a little louder than he probably should, kissing it quickly. Kinsey rubbed it's neck, whispering. "Me too. Bye." Spending time with Toby often made her agree with his opinions when it came to magical creatures, though she was sure she would have like the unicorn anyway. It was so peaceful and beautiful! She swallowed, a little nervous as Toby started to warn her about their surroundings. Kinsey rolled her eyes, "I'm not going to run into a tree Toby," she muttered, slightly annoyed. She wasn't clumsy. Kinsey was actually pretty good at keeping her feet, compared to some people she knew. She jumped a little when he whisper-shouted at her to go, then hurried forward. Despite the fact that she was trying to go fast, Toby was obviously faster than she was. He pulled her forward and Kinsey started to lose her balance since he was moving so much more quickly than she was. She nodded, wheezing when he told her that they were almost there. She could see the light ahead of them and started moving more quickly, excited to make it out when her foot caught on a root. A sharp pain ran up her leg and the next thing Kinsey knew, she was on her knees, gasping at the pain and feeling a bit lightheaded. She twisted to a sitting position, hesitantly reaching for the throbbing ankle. "Toby," she groaned, not at all looking forward to her impending visit to the hospital wing. tobias charles watkins

Toby felt like he was running forever. His ears were pounding, each breath was fire in his lungs, he was pushing himself to the limits. It was slightly easier when you were running away from someone, since he really didn't want to get caught. The light was within their reach, and they were so close, but suddenly Toby felt his arm yank downwards and he halted he to a complete stop, nearly flinging himself into a tree branch in the process. It appeared that his best friend had stumbled over an overgrown root, or a tree, or something. Even when she said she wouldn't - she'd definitely hear about this at a more appropriate time, on another day...
Kinsey was on the ground, and Toby quickly rushed to her aid, eyes widened out of a mixture of shock and a bit of excitement. The boy was huffing and puffing each breath, "Kinsey, noo!" he crouched down to inspect her ankle, "--Don't try to get up so fast. Are you okay?" Toby lightly scolded her, a hand on her shoulder to keep her down. Toby always wanted to be Healer, mostly for animals, but at least he felt confident in these tough situations. He could already see the obvious pain on her face, but as he tried to catch his breath, he lightly poked at her injury to see how bad it really was.
They had hopefully lost whoever was on their tail before, if not, they were surely going to get caught now...

Kinsey was staring at her ankle, which was already starting to swell, a sure sign that it wasn't a good thing. Toby told her not to get up and she let her head drop back to the ground, annoyed at herself. "Noooo, I'm an idiot," she told Toby, covering her eyes with her arm. She wanted to pretend like she wasn't actually here, like she was asleep in bed or something, but the consistent pulsing throbs at her ankle were clear evidence that she was not imagining anything. "How bad is it?" she asked, right before she felt something touch her ankle. "Oww!" she whisper-shouted, reaching towards Toby with the hand that wasn't covering her eyes and swatting at him. "Don't touch it, you! That hurts!" She was trying to be quiet, hoping that whoever was following them before wouldn't find them now. Then it would be her fault and she'd feel terrible. "Are we alone?" her voice even softer now as she dared to glance up at Toby. He was sitting up, he could look around. Kinsey didn't want to get up yet if she didn't have to. tobias charles watkins

Toby was flooded with instant remorse, feeling like he was truly responsible for his best friends injury. Kinsey was burying her face in her arms, flinching from the simplest touch to the ankle, which wasn't a good sign. "Honestly, Kinsey?" he gave her a knowing look, his eyebrows threading at the center of his forehead while he pursed his lips. "I am just an amature...but it's safe to say your ankle is sprained, or fractured." he hesitantly touched it again, against her instruction, which didn't seem to make her happy. He looked around after her question about them still being followed and just shrugged. No one was around to be seen, and he couldn't hear any rustling in the bushes or footsteps, so that was a good sign. Toby didn't even care if they got caught now because she was injured pretty badly. Well, this rendezvous had certainly taken a turn for the worst...
"Ugh...I am so sorry this is all my fault. I feel so bad. I was pulling you too hard." he said quickly, instantly taking the blame for the accident. "We gotta go to the Hospital Wing, like now." Toby draped Kinseys arm over his shoulder, his arm went around her back, "Can you get up if I help you? Don't put any weight on it." he instructed her firmly, getting ready to lift her off the forest floor. Luckily for Kinsey, Toby inspired to be a Healer, as well as a Magiczoologist, so this was a scenario where he felt like he had some sort of control. And it was great practice. Although he felt incredibly guilty for Kinsey getting hurt after such an uplifting experience with the unicorn.

Kinsey didn't really want to be told how her foot was, but she still asked Toby and waited to hear what he would say. She could almost see the pitying expression on his face, but she could also sense his guilt. She moaned when he told her that it was probably sprained or fractured. "Dang it," she mumbled, sitting up and whacking at his shoulder again when he touched her ankle again. "Stop that! It hurts when you touch it," she said firmly, hoping that he would listen but not quite sure whether or not he would. Then he was apologizing, saying it was all his fault and Kinsey shook her head. "It's not your fault Toby. I'm the one who tripped on that stupid root. You didn't make me do that." There was no way she was going to let him blame himself for her injury. She nodded when he said that they needed to go to the Hospital wing and then she took a deep breath as she leaned heavily on him as she worked to get to her feet without putting any pressure on her injured ankle. It took more effort than she expected, but soon they were making their way back through the forest. "Thanks Toby," she said with a small smile. "What are we going to tell the healers?" she asked, moaning a little and wishing that she couldn't feel her ankle throb even without putting pressure on it. tobias charles watkins

Kinsey swatted Tobys hand away from her injury one last time when he gave it another poke to examine the area. That was the last time. He got the message - there was something wrong. Hopefully the healers wouldn't ask too many questions about their whereabouts because Toby wasn't a very good liar.
The tall Ravenclaw helped steady Kinsey the best that he can off the ground, placing as much as her weight on him that she would allow. She insisted that it wasn't his fault and he shook his head in disagreement, "I was pulling you too hard so it made you trip over the root." he frowned, eyebrows threading together. They started to slowly hobble their way out of the forest and towards the light. At this point Toby didn't care if anyone saw them, but he still peered around before stepping out into the forest clearing. Luckily, no one was around to see them. "Uh--tell the Healers you missed a stair coming down and tripped..." Toby instructed firmly, scratching his chin deep in thought. "Or,maybe you can just fake cry until they're done and you might get lucky that they don't ask for a full report because you're too distraught in the moment." he mentioned, that actually sounded kind of promising. His sisters would cry all the time to get out of trouble. Girls were lucky that way, if he or any other guy were to do that, they would just think he's an even bigger pansy than he already is. Toby adjusted his grip on Kinsey and asked in a very concerned tone, "Are you okay?"

Walking with only one foot while trying not to knock her best friend over was hard enough without having to argue with him about whose fault it was and Kinsey found herself getting slightly annoyed, though she really didn't want to fight with Toby about this. "Yeah, or we could say that it's my fault because I don't run enough and am out of shape. Or we could blame the lighting in the forest because the leaves block most of it out, or the tree for growing with its roots above ground. Please don't beat yourself up over this." Really, it was the last thing Kinsey wanted. Toby was like a brother to her. Accidents happened and she didn't want him to worry more than he should. "Besides, this isn't too bad. I'm sure the healers will have it fixed in no time and I'll be back to doing ridiculous shenanigans with you," she teased, laughing quietly to make sure he knew she didn't mean any of that in a negative light. By now they were out of the forest and Toby was giving her ideas of things she could say to the Healers. She laughed and shook her head a little, "I'm no good at fake crying. I could say I was out by a Lake and tripped on a tree root. That's closer to the truth." Kinsey wasn't a super good liar either, unless the occasion really demanded it. From her point of view, it was always easier to stick as close to the truth as possible. Also, there were plenty of trees by the lake and she was certain that at least one of them had its roots above ground. That could potentially work. "What do you think?" she asked, kind of lost in her thoughts about it. Toby shifted a little and Kinsey jumped with one leg in the air, trying to make it easier for him. "I'm fine Toby. It doesn't hurt when I don't put pressure on it. Are you okay or am I going to overpower you when we try to go up the stairs," she teased, an obvious smile in her tone. "Stop worrying, it will be just fine." She hated it when Toby worried, especially when he was worried about her. tobias charles watkins

@kinsey | Note: we can close this one out! |
Toby didn't want to argue with her any longer on whose fault it was that she got hurt. He would feel guilty forever, so that was already enough energy for him to waste on that. Toby would help transport her to the hospital wing and lot leave her side until she was okay though. He was really worried about his best friend. She mentioned that she was a bad fake cryer and he agreed, that wouldn't be a good idea. Then, she asked him for his input on the excuse. It seemed solid enough if she stuck to her story. "Uh, yeah, just tell them the tree root thing." he agreed, nodding his head up and down a few times. Lying wasn't ever a good idea anyways, it was too hard to start keeping facts straight.
As they made their way through the castle, Kinsey seemed like she was in a massive amount of pain. When she teasingly asked Toby if she was overpowering him up the stairs, he rolled his eyes, tightening his grip on Kinsey a bit. "Ugh, c'mooon, Kins you're barely putting any weight on me at all..." he snapped back, slightly annoyed with her portraying him like a wimp...but he wasn't actually ~annoyed. Maybe slightly triggered. They would surely laugh about it later. The pair stepped in front of the large hospital wing doors, Toby turned to Kinsey, hesitating to open the door, "You ready?"

Kinsey nodded when Toby finally agreed that she should just be honest with the healers, but vague. That was probably the best thing. Kinsey wasn't particularly well-versed in lying and it didn't seem like this was the time to start. She really just wanted to get in to the healers so they could get this going and make her ankle better because it really hurt. She wouldn't say anything or even make a sound because she didn't want Toby to feel any worse than he already did, but hiding it didn't take away the fact that it hurt. When Toby called her out for not letting him really help her, Kinsey realized that she was right. Once they reached the top of the stairs (what, she didn't want to knock him over), she started to lean more heavily on her friend, hoping that he would be pleased by that. "I wasn't doing that on purpose," she admitted. "I just don't want to be a burden." Toby would scoff at that, she knew, but Kinsey couldn't help it. The next thing she knew, they were outside of the hospital wing. Kinsey took a deep breath and then nodded, "Yeah, I'm ready."
What followed was a lot of hassle. The healers weren't worried about Kinsey, but they obviously didn't like the look of her ankle. They asked how long ago she was hurt, what measures were taken, where she'd been. Kinsey was as honest as she could be without getting her and Toby into trouble and to her surprise the healers actually believed her! While they bustled around the hospital wing looking for a potion to help with the pain while they fixed her ankle, Kinsey grinned up at her friend. "See Toby? Not a big deal," she hoped he wasn't blaming himself too harshly, though she wouldn't be surprised if he was. Toby was too much like her. About an hour later, she walked out of the hospital wing, good as new. She had a potion that she needed to take before bed and when she woke up in the morning, but besides that she was fine. It all turned out great. --- the end --- tobias charles watkins
