Sometime in November Studying sucked. Studying and academics never came 'easy' to Joseph Fontaine, though he pretended it wasn't much of a struggle to his peers. He was constantly fighting a constant battle of keeping his head above all of his schoolwork so that he could play quidditch. Academic probation wasn't something he wanted to ever be familiar with, so he spent a lot of time trying to stay caught up in classes. Joe had a challenge with staying focused in class, he was easily distracted by his peers, and his mind would often wander to other places. It stressed him out more than he'd want to admit because he didn't want anyone to think he was stupid. Even though he was well aware that he wasn't stupid. So this afternoon Joseph was making his way to the Library. It was the only place where he could study and wouldn't be bothered by his friends, his dorm was too loud and rowdy. Not to mention, studying in the Slytherin Dungeons was way too dark; he'd no doubt fall asleep hunched over his work within minutes and regret it tomorrow. As Joseph was reaching for the door handle for the Library, it swung open towards him with impeccably bad timing, slamming into his body, very hard. He let out an involuntary groan. The collision not only knocked the air out of him, it sent the books in his arms and someone else's belongings flying across the hallway dramatically with a loud commotion. Loose papers were showering down onto the floor, "Excuuuuse you." he grumbled with an over exaggerated annoyed eye roll, pushing the door away from him out of reflex - and mostly so the person on the other side couldn't exit the Library. He didn't know who was on the other side of the door yet, but it didn't matter, no nerd on the other side was going to fight him when it was ~obviously their fault. Kinsey loved doing well in school. It never really came hard to her at all, but even when she found her classes easy it still took effort. No one could write an essay without studying just a little bit at least, or checking to make sure their facts were straight. And studying took time. Normally Kinsey preferred to study in the Ravenclaw common room because people didn't bother her as much when she was in there, but today when she went to the common room it was to see Riley sitting at a table with Priscilla right there. She'd left immediately, deciding that she'd deal with the busy library so she didn't have to watch them, since she knew she wouldn't be able to help herself if she stayed in the same room.
So she'd spent the majority of the morning and a bit of the afternoon in the library, writing a few essays and checking over other assignments she'd done during the week, focusing most of her attention on arithmancy and ancient runes. Then, she checked out some books that mentioned empaths in them. She was still trying to learn as much about that ability as she could, since she wanted to learn more about them. Maybe knowing more about empaths would help her figure out her own ability.
However, not even Kinsey could stay in the library all day. Eventually she sighed and rose to her feet, gathering her books and papers and making her way to the entrance of the library. She forgot to bring her bag with her, so she had to carry everything in her arms, which was a little annoying, but her fault so she couldn't complain. When she reached the door, she moved to open it, but someone was there. The door opened just enough that when it collided with someone on the other side, all of her books and papers flew out of her hands. Kinsey gave an annoyed sigh, moving to exit the library when the door suddenly came toward her and collided with her nose. Eyes watering, Kinsey took a step backward, both hands lifting to her nose automatically as she tried to rub the pain away.
After a moment she stepped back toward the door, exiting to see all her books and papers all over. She rubbed her nose again before going to the ground to start picking things up, not wanting to say anything to the guy in the hallway with her. She hardly even looked at him. His intentions weren't bad, so at least she didn't feel like she needed to hurry, but Kinsey wasn't particularly good at talking to people. After a few moments the silence got to her. "Sorry about that," she muttered, reaching up with one hand to rub her nose again as her other hand continued gathering books. He probably thought she was a complete idiot ... not that what he thought should matter. Kinsey still couldn't bring herself to look at him.

Sometime in November As a girl emerged from the other side of the Library door, Joe was instantly flooded with guilt. It was a defenseless girl in Ravenclaw robes. Wasn't that the intelligent house? She was rubbing her nose and apologizing to him. Normally that would have felt good, powerful even, but he actually felt a little...bad? Sure, Joe was a self proclaimed jerk, but he wasn't a bully. At least not on purpose to girls. Usually he would have played with them a bit, telling them 'better be' or shooting a mean glare, but by the looks of it, he had potentially hurt the girl more than the door swinging into his body. Now he was just an asshole. "Oh, well, fuck. Not as sorry as I am." Joe told her, his green eyes flickering over the girl with uncharacteristic concern, eyebrows threading at the center of his forehead. "That was an uncontrollable reflex.." Joe sputtered honestly, bending over to pick up the girls Arithmacy book from the ground and shoving a couple of the loose papers inside. That's when he realized where he recognized her from. They shared the same Arithmacy class. There was no way he could miss those blue eyes anywhere... though, he never learned her name. Yet. Joe rocked on the balls of his feet, feeling worse the more she rubbed her reddened nose. "--I tend to hit anything that comes flying at my face...it's the beater in me." he shrugged, the corners of his lips curling up into a charming smile. Sometimes that would be a good distraction... "Are you okay?.." Joe inquired, still clutching her book in his grip, not willing to hand it over until she confirmed she was alright. He hadn't actually gotten a full view of her nose since her hand was too busy covering it. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOXOGRAPHY 2.0 [googlefont=Alegreya Sans SC:400]

Now he was apologizing, which made Kinsey feel a little more self-conscious. Was he just apologizing since she couldn't seem to stop herself from rubbing her nose to try and make the tingling sensation go away? Was it all red? A very large part of her wished that she could simply run away and go to a bathroom or her dorm, but her things were scattered down the corridor. Leaving would be a stupid move. She still didn't really look at him, but could see in her periphery that the guy was helping to pick some of her things up. "No, no you're fine," she stammered when he apologized. Ugh, why did she always have to make everything so awkward? To add to that, she was still rubbing her nose.
Then he was explaining himself a bit and Kinsey finally looked up at him to tell him that he didn't need to, that it didn't matter, but she froze when she realized that he was smiling at her. And he was handsome. His green eyes and dirty blonde hair ... not that she would ever say anything. She felt the corners of her lips turning up and turned away from him a little, feeling her cheeks warm. Why was she blushing? Her hand was still up by her nose, but it was more covering it than rubbing it now. Was her nose all red too? Why did Kinsey even care? It wasn't like she wanted to date the guy, or like he would even be interested in her if she did want to. Kinsey shook her head at her ridiculousness. "Really, you're-" she stopped when she heard his voice again, asking if she was okay. She glanced up at him again, surprised by how sincere he sounded. "I'm fine. It's not like it's broken or anything, just tingling. I promise." She offered another smile, forcing herself to lower her hand from her face, almost like she was trying to prove that she was fine or something. Then she spotted another piece of parchment by the wall and moved to pick it up, glad for the distraction.

Sometime in November Once she removed her hand from her nose for the big reveal, it was a little red, but he wasn't going to point that out. More to make himself feel better. She was very cute though. He didn't hesitate. "Ohh, yeah, you're good. You're really good--" he confirmed with a fervent nod and wider smile, his tone was laced with flirtation as he continued, "Well, you are sure a sight for sore eyes.." the snake declared, biting down on his lip with an eyebrow waggle. Maybe that would make her nose feel better.. Joe hastily picked up a couple of more things that were scattered at their feet; holding them with ease under his arm. Two of the books were probably the red nosed girls, but he wasn't going to hand them over until he was done with her. "I sit behind you like three rows back in Arithmancy, which is quite unfortunate, really, because I've just noticed you have such beautiful blue eyes..." he said, as if it were some great discovery, before asking with curiosity. "What's your name?" Joe ended with a smile, an alluring tone and charming smile could get you far and he would use it to his advantage for as long as he could. Kinsey didn't know what to make of this guy. He was smiling at her, telling her she was good. Good at what? Or was he just saying that her nose looked good? Or was he implying something altogether different, as she kind of suspected from his tone. Was he trying to flirt with her? Kinsey was not good at this sort of thing. She offered a small, hesitant smile, not really sure if she should say anything. Then he was commenting that she was a sight for sore eyes, wiggling his eyebrows at her and Kinsey chuckled quietly. "Yeah, I'm sure I look absolutely stunning right now," she answered sarcastically, a blush flaring up on her cheeks again almost as if to prove a point. It was a lot easier for her to talk about herself than to try and figure out what to say back to him. She wasn't good at flirting! It stressed her out.
She could hear him picking up things as she did, and when she stood up again he was looking at her once more. Her eyes brightened with interest when he mentioned that he was in her Arithmancy class. She could talk about that. "I haven't noticed you in there," she answered thoughtfully before adding, "but you know you can sit wherever you want, right? There aren't any assigned seats." Kinsey wasn't really trying to imply that he should sit next to her, she was just trying to be helpful. It was only after she told him about the seating that she registered his compliment about her eyes. "Wait, what?" she asked, flustered once more, but also pleased enough by his compliment that she couldn't stop herself from smiling. Then he was asking for her name, smiling that charming smile again. "I'm Kinsey Bainbridge," Kinsey nodded as she spoke, trying to raise her confidence. "What about yours?"

Sometime in November Joseph couldn't help but laugh at the blue eyed girls remark about her probably looking 'absolutely stunning' right now. The Slytherin nodded in agreement, taking her words too literal as a flirtatious joke. "I gotta admit... usually a bumped nose would knock off some retail value, but you know what, you're very pretty.." He clicked his tongue animatedly at the words 'knock off' and jokingly leaned in to whisper, "A bit early for Christmas though, Rudolph." Joe stopped himself, realizing his unconventional ways of flirting. "--I'm kidding! I'm sorry I couldn't resist, but you're adorable...with those big blue eyes and awkward look on your face. Why're you standing there like no one has called you pretty before?" Joseph gave her a puzzled look, his green eyes narrowing on her slightly, but a smile hinting at the corners of his mouth. Her words slightly stung when she said she hadn't noticed him in class yet. Unfortunately, he had been keeping his head low this year, particularly in the more challenging classes like Arithmancy. He honestly barely knew what was going on, and he tried to stay focused most of the time... Sitting next to a cute girl probably wouldn't be the wisest choice because he'd be too distracted. When she mentioned the open seating rule, he smirked slightly. He knew she meant it more innocent than anything, but she was kind of fun to mess with. She was just so awkward. "Kinsey." he mused her name after her to memorize it, "Was that a formal invitation to sit next to you, Kinsey Bainbridge?" Joe asked, his tone oiled with flirtation. "My name is Joseph Fontaine. Most call me Joe. Joseph, is usually if I'm in trouble." MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOXOGRAPHY 2.0 [googlefont=Alegreya Sans SC:400]

He was laughing at her sarcastic comment and Kinsey couldn't help the smile that crossed her face. He ... had a nice laugh. Not that she would ever say that. Then he started teasing her, saying that she was very pretty even with a red nose and Kinsey shook her head, trying to hide the blush that crossed her face again. He was calling her Rudolph and Kinsey made a face at him. "It's never too early for Christmas," she muttered rebelliously, right before he started to apologize, hurriedly saying that he was kidding and he couldn't resist, mentioning her blue eyes again. At his question, Kinsey opened her mouth to speak, but what could she say? She ducked her head and shrugged a little, looking away from the guy in front of her. "I ... I'm not one of those girls that gets compliments. I'm the one in the corner of the library that is very good at being invisible." She shrugged again, still not looking up at him.
Kinsey smiled and nodded when he repeated her name, but froze as he continued. Her mouth moved up and down as tried to figure out what to say to him. Then she ended up just blurting out, "No! I mean ... well, of course if you want to, I wouldn't- but you really don't- I mean, you don't have to. You can ... sit wherever you want." Her face was bright red now and all Kinsey wanted to do was hide somewhere, but she still had papers laying around and this extremely flirtatious guy was standing in front of her. Kinsey glanced up at him, nodding when he said his name. "Nice to meet you Joe," she bit her lip for a second before standing straight up and looking straight at him, ignoring the fact that her face still hadn't returned to its normal hue. She extended a hand, suddenly wondering if that was too formal or not, but unable to help herself all the same. "I'm sorry, I'm not normally so ..." she gestured with her hands, trying to explain what she was saying without words, "tongue-tied." Kinsey shook her head. There was no way this guy was going to believe her, and she doubted that her "pretty" blue eyes would make up for how ridiculous she was.

Sometime in November Joe let an amused smile slowly wash over his expression from her rebellious 'Chrismas' comment, only because she displayed that she could take a stupid joke; though she was still awkward while enduring it. But he had to admit, it was kind of cute how flustered she was getting, he would have some fun with her... This girl, Kinsey, wasn't his 'type', but Joe admittedly didn't have a 'type'. If they were a living, breathing female, with a nice chest and eyes...they were easily his type if they knew how to keep a conversation going without getting offended. Joe cocked his head to the side, "Hmmm, well, I guess it's not too early to start thinking about what you want for Christmas then." he stated nonchalantly, staring at her lips, but only to see how she would react. Joseph fed off of his peers reactions, which was why he tested them with remarks that weren't necessarily warranted, but he found it entertaining so it was worth it. Kinsey shared that she was normally the one hiding in the corner of the Library, trying not to be noticed. He listened as she spoke softly, seemingly a bit embarrassed since she wouldn't look directly at him. His eyebrows threaded at the center of his forehead, obviously disagreeing with her previous statement. "That's a shame that guys our age are too oblivious or too stupid to notice a diamond in the rough... their loss." he commented offhandedly, a tone much too calm for the nature of the conversation. Then, she was stuttering about the seating situation. Her reaction caused him to smirk ever so slightly, his piercing green eyes scanning her over slowly, quite entertained by her painfully awkward social skills. Her face was beat red, so he was going to try to make her even redder. "Yeah, I want to." Joe said confidently, very sure of himself, biting down on his lip with a laugh to seal the deal. "The pleasure is mine, Kinsey." Joe smiled, waving away her 'sorry' with a hand as she mentioned not usually being so tongue tied. God, she was making this way too easy on him - he was going to eat her alive. He waggled his eyebrows, mostly to show that he was playing, and also to show that she didn't have to take every damn word he said so seriously. "Must be the New York charm...can't help it." he snorted, shaking his head at that comment because it was actually pretty lame. Joseph swiftly picked up a couple of other straggling books and papers off of the corridor floor and turned to the blue eyed girl, "Here. Lemme help you... " he insisted, ripping the books and whatever else was in her arms, into his own arms with ease. "Where are you off to? I will walk you." He was smiling at her. Of course, he was probably just trying to charm her or something, but he did have a nice smile and he was actually being nice to her. Granted, he didn't have any real reason to not be nice to her, but at least he wasn't bullying her like Dom would have been. She shuddered at the thought of her bully and then tried to push him from her mind. She hadn't had any run-ins with him lately, which was a great relief to her. She didn't know how long it would last, but she also didn't want to think about it. His next words pulled her back to their previous conversation and Kinsey looked up at him in surprise. "What I want ..." she trailed off, blushing again when she realized he was staring at her lips. Kinsey swallowed, shaking her head and looking away from him. "You're just messing with me," she muttered, glancing up and smiling hopefully. He'd let her off the hook if she called him out on it, wouldn't he? At the same time, Kinsey kind of liked his flirting, though she would never say that out loud.
Kinsey couldn't look at him as he continued talking, telling her it was a shame people didn't notice her. She shrugged, not really sure why he would say something like that. Maybe it had to do with the blue eyes he kept talking about. Then the whole fiasco with the seating came up and she couldn't stop herself from blushing. She turned away from him, hoping to keep him from noticing how flustered she was, but of course he noticed. She was certain he had. When he said he wanted to sit by her, Kinsey turned around quickly. "You ... want to? Why?" Finally, the Ravenclaw was coming out in her, asking questions instead of allowing her to get ridiculously flustered. Even if he was just teasing, at least she was getting words out without feeling completely embarrassed.
He said the pleasure was his and Kinsey ducked her head a little, looking away from him but laughing softly when he said that it was the New York charm. "Are you trying to make me feel more comfortable?" Kinsey asked as he laughed and then took her books. If that was his goal, she wasn't sure if it was working or not. Why was he so intent on helping her? Wasn't he having fun teasing her? He asked where she was going and Kinsey shrugged yet again, "I ... I was headed to take my stuff to the Ravenclaw Common Room," she muttered softly. Then she turned back to him, "You don't have to carry my things. I- I can do that." Kinsey felt strange letting someone else carry her things. She didn't want to be rude, but she also didn't want to be a burden.

Sometime in November Kinsey accused Joseph of ‘messing with her’, exchanging a bit of a funny look with her in the process, tearing his eyes away from her lips at the accusation. He shook his head in disagreement, biting down on his own lip to hide the smile. ”Glad to see you can take a joke...” he commented nonchalantly, giving her a solid nod. Hey, she was onto him, at least she was as smart as she looked. The girl was prodding him on ‘why’ he wanted to sit next to her, so he shrugged cooly, trying to appear as if her question didn’t phase him. Joe simply smiled at Kinsey, thriving off of her painful social awkwardness for some odd reason. ”I can't see the board." he lied, blinking a couple of times to see if she bought that excuse before continuing with finesse, the smirk pulling the corners of his lips upwards into a charming boyish smile. "—And because you're very pretty." he declared shamelessly, his expression not faltering one bit, green eyes flickering with amusement; only because he truly believed it. Those blue eyes were gorgeous and she had this mysterious air about her, it made him curious... She was quite interesting for someone so quiet, and hell, she looked like she may be holding back a bit...he could just sense it. Joe quirked an eyebrow at the girl, offering her a bit of a challenging look. "Whaaat? Are you too cool to have any new friends, Kinsey?" he asked her, trying to sound and appear as innocent as he could possibly muster. Hell, the halo on his head was definitely crooked, but she had to admit that it was pretty damn convincing. He still had her books clutched in his arms as she shared she was heading to the Ravenclaw tower, explaining that she could carry her own things. Joe scoffed with a playful eye roll, ”I know you’re fully capable of carrying your things, you just shouldn’t have to.” he told her, not handing the books over yet. Yeah, Joe was going to have some fun with her. Could she really get all that mad with him trying to get to her with kindness? This wasn’t typically Joes style of flirting, but hitting a girl in the nose really wasn’t his style either, so today was a new day of new experiences all around. Joe admitted that she was right, saying he was glad she could take a joke and Kinsey couldn't help but feel a little proud of herself. Despite the fact that she was decidedly more flustered around this Joe than she wanted to be, at least she did something right by calling him out on it. Maybe she'd get less flustered the more time she spent around him ... wait, what? She was not about to start searching out people just so she wouldn't get as nervous around them. That wasn't the way Kinsey worked.
Kinsey felt the sudden, minuscule shift in his intentions as he lied, saying he couldn't see the board. She lifted an eyebrow, surprised that he would lie about something like that, but he was just watching her reaction. Kinsey didn't have time to say anything before he started to smile at her when he told her she was pretty. He wasn't lying anymore, she could sense that change in his intentions as well, and knowing that he was sincere made her feel all the more flattered. Kinsey started blushing, looking away from him in an attempt to hide it, though she was sure he already saw. "Do you have to keep on saying that?" she muttered, uncomfortable partly because she didn't want to believe he meant it, but also because she liked it when he told her he thought she was pretty. It was nice having a handsome guy say that so bluntly.
He was teasing her again. Kinsey was fairly sure of this, but even thinking that didn't stop her from being embarrassed. "No, I just-" she shrugged a little, not knowing how to really explain herself. "I'm not used to random people wanting to be my friend. I'm too quiet." He should know that, after everything she already told him about being a shadow. "Are you saying you want to be my friend?" Kinsey added as a moment of bravado took her and she looked up at him again, meeting his eyes. Might as well be blunt about it all so she wouldn't have to wonder.
Kinsey blushed and chuckled softly when he insisted that she shouldn't have to carry her books. Joe was definitely a flatterer, which she actually kind of liked. Even though she didn't know how to respond to him at all. He probably wouldn't want to talk with her again after this, since he'd probably get bored out of his mind walking her to the Ravenclaw tower, but maybe she'd be able to enjoy herself a little. "Yeah, sure," she responded sarcastically. "Umm, this way?" It should have been a statement, since she was leading him, but her phrase definitely came out as a question. Merlin, one of these minutes she'd stop being flustered and actually talk to him like a normal person ... but probably not. "Are you sure you don't just want to go to the library? I mean, you were going there for a reason, weren't you?" Kinsey wasn't sure what he meant to do when he accidentally hit the door into her nose, but she didn't want to be a bother. She had a feeling he wouldn't let her try to change his mind about what he was doing.

Sometime in November Joe simply smiled, cocking his head to the side with a contagious boyish grin that only grew wider. "Say what?" he questioned daftly, more for her reaction than anything. Joe was fully aware that she was referring to calling her pretty, it was just be more fun to make her say it out loud. Hell, she was very cute, why was she getting so worked up over the fact? Apparently someone hadn't been called pretty enough, so he'd change that, even if he could tell that it was getting on her nerves already. Kinsey prodded him about the Library, because that was where he was originally heading before he accidentally assaulted her nose. He shook his head with a passionate detestment, "Nope. It seems that the Library has an invisible force field that is trying to keep me away from it, so I should probably abide by it." he answered firmly, following her in the direction that she pointed, towards the Ravenclaw tower. They walked side by side, and he couldn't help but jump right into the unwarranted questions. "So, Kinsey, the real question is, do you not have many friends because you're so used to pushing everyone away?" Joe asked her with a brutally honest tone, his expression not faltering one bit; just his eye brow quirked upwards with a slight interest. It was as if he asked people these pestering questions daily. That was a bit personal, but Joe didn't really care, he had always been a bit of an 'in your face' kind of person. People either loved Joe, or they despised him; no in between. Admittedly, Joseph wasn't an easy person to handle if they didn't understand his sense of humor, or his personality. In reality, he was pretty simple minded, the snake merely thrived off of his peers reactions. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOXOGRAPHY 2.0 [googlefont=Alegreya Sans SC:400]

Kinsey's eyes widened at his question. Was he an idiot? Or did he think she was? "I- you, you know perfectly well what I'm talking about!" Kinsey exclaimed, the stupid blush coming back again as she looked away from him, trying to hide the small smile on her face. Why did he make her blush so much? The thing was, she didn't want to outright question that he thought she was pretty by coming out and saying it, but she also didn't know how else to say it. For some reason, she didn't want him to see how much she liked it when he said that.
He shook his head, saying that he should probably stay away from the library and Kinsey couldn't help but giggle. "Seriously? You're going to avoid the library because I tried to leave when you were trying to go in?" She wanted to know if he was just teasing or not, but she also wasn't entirely sure how to get him to tell her the truth.
She would have been perfectly happy walking to the Tower in silence, but apparently Joe was a talkative person. Her mouth fell open at his question and she looked at him accusingly, but he wasn't trying to be mean. She could tell that from his intentions. He was just ... curious. She looked away from him, actually considering his question now that she knew he wasn't just being a jerk. "I ... I don't push everyone away ... but I might've pushed a few away," not intentionally, but she probably had. "I have a hard time trusting people." Her eyes widened when she realized the confession that slipped out. It was true, but she'd never come outright and said that before. She snapped her mouth shut, forcing herself to not add anything else in answer to his question. "What about you? Do you have lots of friends?" Kinsey couldn't help but try to turn the attention away from her, even if it only worked for a moment.

Sometime in November Kinsey was onto his ways already. She was surprised that he decided to reroute from the library to whatever she was doing now. Joe lifted his shoulders lazily, "Yeah, I guess you could say that...I may be also looking for any reason not to study." He smiled shamelessly, blinking a few more times to play stupid. The snake cocked his head the side for dramatic effect. Joseph knew he had looks going for him and he loved to flirt, although this was an very unconventional method. Was it working? He didn't know...but he did quite enjoy her smile when she allowed it to creep onto her face. Her books were still clutched in his arms, so that said something. When Kinsey answered his question, he was taken aback slightly by the honestly. She shared that she had a hard time trusting people. That was slightly unexpected, even if he did ask her a stimulating question. Joseph arched an eyebrow in her direction, "And the truth comes out..." he stated with the straightest face he could muster, scoffing, but quickly saying, "I'm just kidding.." A genuine smile spread across his face and his eyes flickered with amusement. She asked him if he had many friends, since she was honest, he'd be honest. Joe stopped to think for a second, "Real friends? As in friends I'm talking to after graduation? No, I don't to be completely honest. I hate just about everyone here equally. This school sucks." he was still smiling, despite the negative words spilling out of his lips. As they walked side by side, her leading because he had no clue where the Ravenclaw tower was located, "Which is why I think we should probably be friends. You seem pretty cool. A bit awkward, but in that mystery nerd kind of way. I didn't call you 'cute' this time so you can't get mad, yeah?" he ended with a smirk, which melted into a full blown grin. Yeah, he thought he was clever for that one. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOXOGRAPHY 2.0 [googlefont=Alegreya Sans SC:400]
