Kinsey laughed when Joe seemed to take her teasing to heart. "I didn't mean it," she insisted, "I'm sure your cake is amazing." Granted, if he really wanted her to eat some on its own she wouldn't fight it, but she didn't want to make him feel like he had to make even more just because of her. She didn't want to make him go out of his way just for her. She shrugged, "I'll let you know if I think it's good enough for sure," she teased lightly. Kinsey was sure his cake would be great.
Joe grabbed a bowl and started telling her everything he was doing, dramatizing every bit like he was being recorded or something. Smirking, Kinsey leaned back against the counter and crossed her arms as she watched him. "Are you sure you can handle the 'old-fashioned' way?" She teased, unable to resist. He was basically asking for it, but the truth was that when she started cooking down here she had to accustom herself to the fact that she didn't have all the same tools that she did have at home. It was definitely easier with electric mixers, but she wasn't going to come out and say that after teasing Joe about it.
It was clear, even without Joe telling her what he was doing, that he knew what he was doing. The way he confidently added the ingredients, and easily added the eggs with one hand was actually pretty impressive. She didn't realize that her expression shifted from smirking to impressed as she watched him. He really did know his way around a kitchen. Kinsey didn't think he'd been lying before, but she had suspected a bit of an exaggeration. Joe was definitely proving her wrong right now. "Oh it will?" she challenged, though she already believed him. "Naw, if you convert me, I'll just let you make a cake for my mom too. Gotta make sure it's done right," she answered.

When Kinsey questioned his skills the old fashioned way, he turned to her. "Always up for a challenge." he quipped, waggling his eyebrows at her. Kinsey was a challenge for him. It was hard to see what she was really thinking. Not that he was a mind reader or anything, but he figured that she was at least amused by him though, or else she wouldn't choose to have his company. He enjoyed Kinseys company. She was smart, sweet, and genuine; the kind of person he should have tried to socialize with more often.
The Ravenclaw mentioned him making a cake for her mom, more as a joke, but he playfully took it to heart for her. "I'll make a cake for your mom." he quirked an eyebrow in her direction, his lip twitching into a smile knowing that she was joking, but it was entirely too much fun to take the joke seriously. "Watch out, I'm about to have you and your entire family hooked on my sweets and you'll never be able to get away from me." he stated in jest, winking playfully.
"Now, to mix the wet and dry ingredients." he announced, grabbing the bowl of dry ingredients and mixing it into the wet ingredients with a nice fluid rhythm. Within moments, it was mixed into a nice, yellow-y batter. He grabbed two of the cake pans that he previously lined with butter and poured the batter into each pan slowly. He opened the oven with one hand, and tossed each pan in one at a time before closing it. "Hows that? Time for you to take the lead now..." he countered coolly, leaning up against the counter, as if his job were done. "We should take it out in about...twenty minutes.." Joe mused, setting the timer on the counter. The sponge cake was admittedly the easiest part of the recipe, at least to him, but he'd own it. That would be the best damn spongecake she's ever had, hands down. Joe was ready to see what Kinsey did when it was her turn to take the reigns.

Kinsey laughed when Joe confirmed that he was up for the challenge. She wasn't surprised. He seemed like the kind of person who liked to try things new ways and was always finding a way to better himself, at least when it came to the things he cared about. Obviously, baking was one of those things. "I bet you are," she muttered under her breath, not meaning for him to hear it.
To her surprise, Joe easily agreed to make a cake for her mom, going further and saying that he would have her entire family hooked on his treats and that she'd never be able to get away from him. "What makes you think my family even likes treats?" she countered, trying to sound much more confident than she was. "maybe they're more focused on being healthy and stuff." He would probably see straight through that, since she was teaching him how to make trifle now, but it was fine. Maybe he wouldn't call her on it.
Joe continued to announce his process as he worked and Kinsey laughed again. She was pretty sure that was his goal, to get her laughing and making sure she enjoyed herself and he was doing a good job at it. She shrugged when he asked how that was, deadpanning. "I guess we'll have to wait and see how it is when your cakes come out." Kinsey knew his cake would probably be delicious, but she wasn't going to come outright and say that.
He said it was her turn and Kinsey grinned. "Okay, so we're going to make jell-o and custard," she told him, pulling the ingredients for the jell-o towards her first. Then she glanced up at Joe with a small smirk. "My mom and I normally divide and conquer for this one. Are you up for making some jell-o while I make custard or do you want to watch the process?" Yes, it was a challenge and she was interested to see what he wanted to do. Making the quick-set jello was probably the easiest part of the whole cake, but you had to make it before the cake was done so it would have time to set a little. The custard needed time to cool down as well. "I'll teach you how to make the custard either way," she added, just in case that would make a difference. Custard was her favorite part of the dish, after all. She would make plenty of it.

"Nahhh, you'd be making granola or fruit cake if y'all were health nuts, because those treats suuuck. So be glad we aren't making sad oatmeal cookies today." he shook his head in fervent disagreement, his tone playful, but still declining her possibility that her family were health nuts. Maybe they were, but they probably wouldn't be making trifle today if they were.
Joe listened at Kinsey gave him instruction. She said that she would show him how to make the custard, and told him to get the Jello together. That was the easiest step. "Whatever you say, Boss." he agreed with an obedient nod, tossing the pack of Jello into the air before catching it with ease, paired with a cheesy smile. Joe enjoyed being in the kitchen, he couldn't help but be a dork when he was doing what he loved. Especially with great company. He was glad that he and Kinsey were doing this today.
Joe grabbed a pot, filled it with water, and set it on the flame so that it could start to boil. "Okay. Done." Joe snorted, watching Kinsey as she started to prepare her own ingredients. He leaned up against the countertop, already prepared to pass time. "I'm basically your sous-chef today, use me when you need me." he mused, grabbing a couple of strawberries to slice them up in uniform shapes. He turned so that his body was slightly faced toward Kinsey, "Do you know what you want to do when you graduate?" he asked, a more casual laid back tone as he focused on cutting the strawberries. This was a good time to learn a bit about Kinsey.

Kinsey laughed, not really surprised when Joe called her out on her family not being health nuts. "Okay, okay you're right," she admitted with a shrug. "My family doesn't really care about just eating healthy things, but my mom still always made sure we ate our vegetables and stuff." She wrinkled her nose for dramatic effect ... or just to emphasize how much she didn't like vegetables.
Cooking with Joe was a lot easier than Kinsey expected. A part of her thought he'd tease her the entire time. He kind of was, but for some reason right now it didn't throw her off as much as it did when they were just talking. Maybe giving her hands something to do helped. She'd have to remember that. She gave him a quick nod when he called her boss, saying he'd do whatever she said. She glanced at him while he started to boil water, but then gathered her own things.
"Oh, I will," she answered him with a smile. "Okay, so when you make custard, you need the custard powder. You get some milk boiling and then you focus on the powder. You mix it with a little milk, to make a paste without any lumps." She started mixing the small amount of custard powder into paste like she said. "It should look like this," she said, holding the bowl out to him so she could take it. Then she stood back from the stove for a minute, wrinkling her nose. "Now we actually have to wait for that milk to boil too until we're ready to continue." She folded her arms for a second, feeling slightly uneasy. She didn't want to just stand here.
Kinsey jumped after a second. "Oh yeah! We need to slice the strawberries!" She told Joe, smiling. "Maybe that'll help pass the time until the water and milk are boiling?" Kinsey certainly thought it would, so she'd slice. Joe could join her if he wanted to.

Joe pretended like he didn't know how to make custard. He did it for Kinsey. Honestly only because she had the impression that he didn't know how to make it. Many of his creations required custard, so it was nothing new for him. But he would pretend. He liked the look that she carried on her face when she was showing him how to do it. He pretended to be following along, nodding his head up and down occasionally as if he were actively listening. Joe was more just watching her and smiling.
A smile crept onto his face when Kinsey showed signs of getting nervous about the wait time. He was already occupied with the strawberries, and she was too distracted by whatever else to answer his last question about career paths.. The snake chuckled to himself, lining up the strawberries he had just cut up for preparation. Joe turned to face Kinsey again, "I have an idea, we can play a game to get to know each other in the meantime." he said, trying to hold back the flirtatiousness, and substitute it with a more laid back casual tone. Being so shamelessly flirty for so long would take a lot of energy if he had to hold that up through a cake baking, not to mention cooling. It was for Kinsey's sake as well, since she was finally showing signs of getting more comfortable around him. He didn't want to reverse those advances. "Have you ever played 20 questions, Kinsey?" he asked curiously with a smile, lining up another row of strawberries. They definitely had enough strawberries.

Joe was listening carefully as Kinsey described what needed to be done, nodding his head and following along. Kinsey was a little surprised, not expecting him to be so quiet. Every other time they did anything together, he was always teasing and joking and asking questions, except when they were in class obviously. Kinsey didn't mind the questions, it was just interesting to see him so quiet, though it also made her a little more nervous. She wasn't used to people watching her so carefully, or even listening to her so intently. She felt a little anxious about that, but felt like she did a decent job hiding it.
What Kinsey didn't expect was for Joe to be so fast with the strawberries. Wait. Did he cut those before she mentioned that they needed to be cut? She didn't mind if he had, but she simply couldn't remember. Was it nerves or was she just being a little weird? Either way, she was left with nothing to do but wait for the pots to start boiling and she was definitely feeling a bit nervous now. Joe brought up an idea that they should play a game to get to know one another better and Kinsey nodded, moving over to the pot of custard and stirring it. That would work. "Sure," she answered, definitely feeling a little more comfortable now she knew there was a plan. Joe mentioned 20 questions and Kinsey's eyebrows furrowed. "Yes ... but how is that a get-to-know-you game? Isn't that more of a 'guess the thing I'm thinking of' game?" Or maybe he knew a different version than she did. Either way it was interesting and a little odd. Then again, maybe she was the odd one for not knowing exactly what he was talking about. She stirred the pot some more, making sure the milk didn't stick to the bottom.

Kinsey seemed to have heard of the game he was talking about, but a different rendition. A soft laugh past his lips. "Yeah, that's one version of the game." he nodded, "But I'm not talking about the 'guess what I'm thinking of' game. This is more of an ice breaker. It's not really even a game, honestly, you basically just ask 20 questions back and forth." Joe explained with a smile, before lifting his shoulders into a lazy shrug. He decided he wanted to share a bit more with Kinsey..
Slicing another strawberry with ease, he spoke while he concentrated on the task at hand. "When I was younger, my sister and I used to fight a lot, so we'd have to take a lot of extra curricular activities together as a punishment...at one of the muggle camps we went to, I remember playing that game with dance partners who started off as strangers." Joe shared, figuring it didn't hurt to share those dorky details. Kinsey didn't seem like the type to judge.
He turned to her, still slicing a handful of strawberries. "They can be as silly or as serious as you like, kind of like.... If you were able to drop everything right now and go anywhere, where would you choose to go?" Joe started casually, not looking to take anything too serious. It was just was just a nice way to pass the time. Joe shot a smile at Kinsey, curious to see what her answer would be, he enjoyed getting to know her.

Joe laughed, but Kinsey could tell it wasn't the teasing laugh. She smiled when she realized why. They both knew different versions of the same game. She nodded slowly as he explained more about his version, that it was a way to break the ice and get to know someone. She was fine. She could definitely answer questions. Coming up with them might be a little harder, but it was definitely doable. "Okay, that sounds like fun," she answered, smiling encouragingly now, even though she was fairly certain Joe would play this even if she didn't encourage him.
Her head quirked to the side a little as she listened to him explain. At first, Kinsey didn't know what fighting with his sister had to do with the game, but he explained a bit more and it made sense. She nodded, smiling as she imagined what he described. Luckily, her parents never did anything like that with their family. Kinsey could only imagine how her relationship with Cara would have deteriorated if they'd been forced to spend more time with one another. It was already hard enough without that.
Kinsey nodded as he told her they could be any kind of question she wanted, then proceeded to ask the first one. "Umm ... somewhere foreign," she answered with a shrug, her intonation making her answer sound like a question. "I mean, I think it could be fun to go to America, or Italy or Spain or something." Really, Kinsey wanted to control her ability and then she could go anywhere. Do whatever she wanted, even though she didn't know what she wanted yet. "Do you have any pets? If so, what kind and name and stuff?" she asked, shrugging as she did so. Was that a lame question? Or did it count as more than one? She wasn't sure.

When Kinsey answered his question with the question intonation, he quirked his eyebrow towards her, corner of his lip twitching into a smirk. She added a couple of more places and he nodded agreeably, satisfied with her answer. "Those are great places, I'd like to visit France." he added casually. For a second, Joe wasn't sure if he was supposed to answer his own question or not, but answering only her questions would have technically been ten questions...plus, it would keep him from asking questions he wouldn't want to answer. Not that Joe was easily embarrassed...he was pretty much an open book to the people he called friends. Kinsey was definitely a friend, but also someone he also kind of adored in a lot of ways.
She asked her first question and he nodded, not thinking it was lame at all. "Back home I have a dog named Rascal, he's a German shepherd. Oh, and also a barn owl named Fat Owlbert here at school." Joe shared as matter of factly. Truthfully, he didn't send his parents many letters, so he didn't visit his owl much. Maybe he'd give him a visit, drop by to give him a treat or something. "What is the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you?" Joe asked, already prepared to dig into the deeper ones. That's what twenty questions was all about after all. He set the knife down properly on the counter top and wiped his hands on the cloth, before leaning casually against the counter top awaiting her answer patiently.

She shouldn't have worried about Joe's reaction to her ideas of nice places to visit. He answered back, saying that he'd like to go to France and Kinsey found herself smirking slightly. "You want to try out the food there in person so you can try to recreate it," she teased, feeling a little brave in that moment. He didn't waste any time before started to explain about his pets and Kinsey smiled as he started, then burst out into giggles when he said his owl's name. "Fat Owlbert," she repeated to herself, shaking her head as she giggled. "You're hilarious."
Kinsey turned her attention to the custard for a second. The milk was starting to boil, so she continued with the process of making the custard, forgetting to explain what she was doing to Joe. She was too distracted by their conversation. Her eyes widened when he asked about the most embarrassing moment in her life and Kinsey started blushing as the memory came back. She looked at the pot in front of her in determination as she explained, trying to ignore the lingering embarrassment as she thought back to the moment. "I, uhhhh ... passed out in front of the school my first night here?" Kinsey said, shaking her head. "I ... they were doing the sorting ceremony and they called my name. I tripped on my way up there, which was embarrassing enough as it was. I sat on the stool and then the next thing I remember I was waking up on the ground. They didn't even get the hat on my head before it happened. So they quickly got me sorted and then rushed me to the hospital wing for a check-up. I got teased for ages." Granted, she'd passed out because of her ability, because she was so young and got overwhelmed by all the different intentions surrounding her, but she didn't need to explain that to Joe. No one in the school knew that at the time either, except for Dustin and Diana. They all thought she was just shy and embarrassed, which was true, but it wasn't the whole thing. "Uhhh ... favorite childhood memory?" she asked, happy to change the subject.

Joe nodded his head with a grin when Kinsey accused him of only wanting to go to France because of the food. That truly was the reason. And, well, because of history and architecture, but definitely more for the food. Joe wanted to try food on every corner of the world. "You know me too well." he winked, not even denying it. And he couldn't hide the smile when she laughed at his owls name.
Joe listened closely when Kinsey shared her most embarrassing moment. Frowning slightly, but his lips twitched into a smile instead, "Yeah, that wins most embarrassing moment for sure. That's pretty bad." Joe agreed with a snort, he could tell that she was still embarrassed by it. Joe watched as she got the custard together, ready to assist if she needed it, but she seemed like she had control over the situation. Her next question was 'best childhood memory'. Joe thought for a second. "My siblings and I used to battle to the death in the living room. One time, when I was like probably nine...my brothers did a crazy body slam move and accidentally broke the china cabinet. We were so scared, hiding and crying, we thought our parents were going to cancel Christmas..." Joe snorted at the vivid memory. "I'm pretty sure we were packed up and ready to move out." Joe added.
He paused, considering what he wanted to ask next. Joe turned to Kinsey when he made his decision, "What are three things you value in a person?" Joe asked, delving for the deeper questions.

Joe teased her, saying she knew him too well and Kinsey beamed. She was proud that she'd guessed correctly and glad that he was willing to admit it. She liked being right about things, even if it was just a simple guessing game like this. Maybe Joe realized that, and that was why he agreed with her out loud instead of arguing the point.
She couldn't tell if he was smiling or frowning when she finished her story. He agreed that it was a bad embarrassing moment, snorting and Kinsey figured he probably was smiling before. The custard was almost done now. Kinsey was stirring it constantly, waiting for it to thicken up. "Your water is boiling," she teased Joe softly, not trying to interrupt their game, but also wanting him to make the jello for the trifle. Then he started explaining about his favorite childhood memory. Kinsey listened carefully and started smiling in the middle. "Wow, you were that scared for your life? Interesting. How did your parents respond?" Kinsey wanted the end of the story, so she might as well push for it a little.
At his next question for her, Kinsey had to think for a minute. "I value honesty," she answered immediately. That one was easy. She hated when people lied to her, she could always tell. "Trust." The last one wasn't coming super easily to her. If someone was honest and she could trust them, things generally went okay between them. What else did she think was important for people to have. "and ... I guess, working for what they want? Like, determination I guess?" She didn't know how to describe it and hoped that worked well enough for Joe. "What about you?" she asked automatically, forgetting that it was her turn to ask a question. She wanted to hear his answers to this one.

Well, it seemed that Kinsey had Joe so distracted that he forgot about the water boiling. He did a little spin on his heel, retrieving the packet off of the counter top, ripping the paper envelope and pouring the contents into the bubbling water. He removed the pan from the burner and stirred the contents into the water until it wasn't clumpy. As he did this, he shrugged his shoulders at Kinseys question about he and his brothers being really that scared for their lives. "Yeah, we were just dramatic. Later on we found out the case was enchanted, everything was fixed with magic, so everything was okay. My parents liked to fake being mad though to freak us out." Joe shared, adding more detail since she had asked further. The story was one his parents still brought up to this day. Ashley was the angel daughter, like always, telling all of the boys that they were stupid.
Joe listened to Kinseys answers on her values of people. He agreed with them, nodding along as she spoke. Then, she asked him his values back. He took a second to consider his own answers, not wanting to take her own. "Hmm...well, loyalty, sense of humor, and trustworthiness is important for me." he answered, accepting it as a question. His eyes flickered with amusement, "I've lost count now..." he announced, turning to Kinsey. Joe thought of another question, he could do this all day. He loved asking questions, almost as much as he loved answering them. He had one. Joe cocked his head to the side with curiosity. "Do you believe in love at first sight?" he asked, not in a flirty way, but an honest question. Joe was too young to know how he felt about that stuff. It all sounded silly to him as a teenage boy. That would be more like 'lust' at first sight for him, but girls always had funny explanations to these things..

Kinsey grinned when Joe spinned around and started working on the jello. Obviously he wasn't a novice in the kitchen and she was positive he'd get the jello done quickly, possibly even faster than her with the custard, but she was still doing her best. It was almost done too. She chuckled when he finished the story, saying that everything ended up fine. "Sounds stressful," she told him with a smile. "At least everything wasn't destroyed entirely." That was the one benefit. They boys hadn't destroyed it all entirely. So they couldn't be in that much trouble, could they?
She smiled, nodding when he said his values. Then she quirked her head to the side, "Why do you bother with me then? I've got no humor at all ..." Kinsey was actually quite proud of the serious expression she was somehow keeping on her face for the time being. She knew Joe wasn't about to buy the idea that she didn't joke around, since she did tease him from time to time, but since she was teasing him now that was the point of it. She smiled, "I have no idea what number we're at. That was your job," Kinsey answered with a shrug. "Guess we'd better give up while we're ahead." Apparently she couldn't stop herself from teasing him.
At his next question she paused for a moment, "No, not really. I think that in order to truly love someone, you need to know them. If you've never spoken to them before, I don't think you can know them." Kinsey bit her lip before continuing, "but I don't think you need to know someone long before you fall in love with them. I don't think there's a specific time limit for how long it takes at all." It happened really fast between her and Riley last spring, after all. She laughed as her next question came to her. "Okay, if magic didn't exist, which superpower would you want and why?" Yes, she was sticking to lighter questions. Kinsey couldn't help it. Her brain didn't want to think deeper.
"Custard's done!" she sang, pulling it off the heat and grabbing a hot pad to stick it in the fridge with. If it didn't cool fast enough they could always use magic, but they were still waiting for the cake to cook, so she wasn't in a rush yet. She closed the fridge and turned back to Joe, waiting a little nervously. They were just going to continue the game now, right?
