should just tell you to leave
because i know exactly where it leads
Victoire had a few errands to run today, but she was distracted. The first meeting of the new Order was just the night before and she had seen Teddy for the first time in years. For some reason she went to sit near him, and why did she do that? How could she be so stupid? He had started talking about his concern for the kids at Hogwarts and Victoire immediately felt connected to him in that regard. They practically had the same family, which was one thing that made their relationship work. They cared for the same people and they care for each other. Cared, she thought, as in past tense.
But seeing him in that room at Longbottom Hill... that was probably the most confusing thing that could have happened to her. She had no idea he was going to be there. Heck, for all she knew he was still out of the country doing whatever he wanted with whoever he wanted. Really? Now she was starting to feel jealous? She was the last person who had any right to feel that way.
She wanted to scream, to be honest. She wanted to shove the nearest person in frustration. What was the matter with her? She had the perfect career, a nice little apartment and a great team of co-workers. She had everything she wanted. So then why did she want him? She couldn't deny that a strong part of her was pulling her in that direction from the moment she laid eyes on him. Yup, this was why she avoided him after they broke up. She knew exactly where it would lead if she saw him again. She could already feel herself slipping back into her sixteen year old body, wanting Teddy more than anything else.
But this was different. She was an adult now and she still had feelings for him. There was no way it was just teenage attraction. Heck, it was deeper than that before when they were actually teenagers. She clenched her fists together at the thought, she didn't have time for this!
She tried to shake it off as she shoved her hands in the pockets of her pink coat and walked down the cold Alley. Where was she even headed? She was sure she had listed her errands on a piece of paper somewhere... she stopped walking and stepped out of the way in order to search her coat for the little piece of paper where she had written out her errands for the day. She had written it down, hadn't she?

Since the Order meeting, Teddy had felt... different. He didn't know what he had expected walking in, but he hadn't expected to feel so... lost upon seeing her. Teddy had spent four years thinking about her. How she would have changed, how she would look different, how she would be on the arm of some Ministry guy, but... she wasn't. She wasn't any of that. She was exactly the same. Teddy supposed that was what was so shocking to him... she was the same Victoire that Teddy fell in love with. And for some reason, Teddy felt all of those old feelings rising back up. And they were leaving him very zombie like as he walked down the street of Diagon Alley.
Teddy had no real destination. He was just aimlessly wandering around, his mind flooded with thoughts of Victoire. After seeing her, that part of Teddy that had always regretted leaving Britain felt stronger than ever before. He didn't just regret leaving Britain, but he regretted ever letting Victoire go, too. Seeing her had never left Teddy feeling so cowardly before until today. Teddy had surely thought of Victoire a lot while he was aroad, but their run in had him thinking about her more than ever. He was so distracted, replaying the moment he saw her at the meeting in his mind, he had not really been paying attention to where he was walking until he heard something crinkle under his feet. Teddy bent down to pick it up and contnued walking as he looked it over, curiosity getting the best of him.
Almost immediately, Teddy recognized the handwriting. Female, girly. The same signature, in fact, that he had spent countless hours fawning over whenever he received a note in this handwriting. This particular note listing errands had shocked Teddy so that as he continued to walk, he was not watching where he was going. Before Teddy could raise his eyes from the paper to pay attention to where he was walking, he had bumped right into some poor girl. Teddy dropped the piece of paper. "I'm so sorry," he began to stutter out immediately. "I wasn't watching where I-" As Teddy looked at the face of the girl, a wave of anxiety swept instantly through Teddy's body.
"Oh, shit."

"It's fine just-" Victoire wasn't prepared for anyone to come plowing into her, especially not Teddy Lupin. her jaw dropped as she looked up to make eye contact with him. "Teddy." she said breathlessly as she placed her hand over her heart and took a step back. Bumping into her clearly had thrown him for a loop, for the color was draining from his face as he cursed at the mere site of her. She knew that she had broken his heart, breaking it off with him had broken her heart as well- which made seeing him even harder. They both were suffering when really... did that have to be?
Her eyes scanned him for a moment until they fell upon her to do list which was on the ground in front of them. It must have fallen out of her coat when Teddy bumped into her. She glanced back up at him, "I'm sorry, I... I shouldn't have... gotten in your way," what!? Who was this bumbling, apologizing girl right now? No, he had bumped into her, hadn't he?
She reached down and picked up the paper, quickly, and regained her confidence as she stood. "How have you been?" she asked- formal, resolute. There was no reason to let him see that the mere sight of him affected her deeply. No, he didn't need to see that. He needed to see who she had become. He needed to see that all of her hard work, and breaking it off with him, wasn't for nothing. It was for something really important. It was for her to get to an amazing place. But she had even farther to go, she couldn't show weakness and get wrapped up in Teddy now. She couldn't.

Teddy had obviously startled her just as much as she startled him, for she let out a little breath and said his name, sounding quite surprised. He hadn't heard that voice say his name like that in so long... a little something pricked at his heart as she did so. He could feel his breath hitch and his chest tighten. He was not at all prepared for this moment. She really did look... like Victoire. And for that, Teddy was eternally thankful. She didn't seem to have changed a bit. If she had, Teddy wasn't sure how he would have felt. More shocked? Heartbroken? But as she stood in front of her, he couldn't help but put on the most awkward, crooked smile he had ever mustered.
Victoire began stuttering out an apology and Teddy's heart nearly skipped ten beats. He couldn't help but let out a little chuckle at this. "No, no, it's alright," he said, putting up his hands in front of him as if to wave all worries away... but also to keep some distance from her, or he may want to just embrace her. "That was my fault," he gave a courteous little nod, his awkward smile seeming to ease a little more and looking a lot more natural. He was handling this situation far better than he imagined he would have. Teddy had played this moment out many times in his mind and each time it ended in Teddy's heartbreaking as Victoire explained she was with some other man, far more successful than Teddy. Then again, there was still time for that nightmare to unfold...
Teddy couldn't help but watch her intently as Victoire bent down to pick up the paper. Her blonde hair as beautiful and as captivating as ever. He was actually too distracted by how much she hadn't changed that he had not answered her question right away. After a moment of more awkward silence, Teddy blinked a few times as if to make it seem like he had not been staring at her so openly. "Uh, I - I've been good," he nodded, sticking his hands in his pockets. He didn't know what else to say about 'how he had been.' A mess? Falling apart? Because he had been, without her... but she didn't need to know that. "How about you? Did you end up in the Ministry?" He asked casually.

Victoire simply nodded as Teddy declared the run-in to be his fault. She noticed his face started to relax a little more, which caused her shoulders to stop tensing up so much. This still didn't meant hat the situation wasn't uncomfortable, by any means. No-it was still extremely awkward and hard to bear, but at least they were able to converse somewhat normally now. At least Teddy was smiling and not screaming at her. At least he was bombarding her with questions as to why they had to break up. He was being very mature about this, and for that she was incredibly grateful.
She wasn't feeling mature however. She wanted to reach out and touch his cheek, brush his bangs off his forehead-but no. She had to just stand there. Internally, she was throwing a little temper tantrum at the moment. She realized he had been staring at her for a little longer then necessary for normal conversation. She crossed her arms over her chest and he finally answered her question. "I did," she answered, showing surprise that he had remembered that she was looking into that sort of thing.
"I'm Junior Assistant to the Minister of Magic, actually-" she added, her confidence slowly reforming itself. Yes, she did make it to the ministry after finishing the auror program. Yes, she was extremely accomplished now. And yes , breaking up made it all possible. But she couldn't say that out loud.

Mentally, Teddy's mind was going a million miles a minute. He wanted to reach out, embrace her, kiss her even. But he was sure that Victoire would never allow that or want that again. He wanted to ask why they had broken up, but this was not the time nor the place. There was a certain setting for that, and that setting was not in the middle of Diagon Alley, bumping into one another for the first time in four years. No, that required a meeting time and place. A formal conversation. This was hardly formal. Teddy was already struggling keeping himself together as is.
Teddy watched Victoire carefully, as he once always did. He loved to watch her face as she registered certain information. She was beautiful, as always. Teddy couldn't help himself. And as he watched her process that question, Teddy realized that he had surprised himself with the question but then again... all he had done for years was think about her. It was kind of hard to forget what she had always wanted to do with her life. He could remember sitting next to her at her graduation, telling her how she was going to make a great Minister, one day. Even if then that was not her ambition, Teddy believed that she had the nerve to do it. And what a darn good Minister she would be! He found that he still believed that, and smiled as Victoire said she had indeed made it into the Ministry.
Junior Assistant to the Minister of Magic. What a position to hold. So she really had to be busy quite a lot. Teddy almost wanted to ask if she had time to see anyone, but once again that was a question for another time and place. Instead, Teddy simply nodded but he couldn't help but let a real grin appear on his face. He was truly happy that Victoire had made it where she had always wanted to. "Good for you," he said, nodding. It was all he could bring himself to say, but it certainly wasn't a fake compliment.

Victoire smiled as he congratulated her, "Thanks Teddy, Thank you," she really was grateful that he was happy for her. This was something that was important to her. He had always been so encouraging and meaningful when it came to her career. So, then why didn't she explain that this was the main reason that she had to end things with him? She could have explained so much, but she was so young and stupid. She hadn't said what she should have. She had just ended it.
Victoire tried looking away from his face, but her eyes wouldn't listen to her brain. She didn't want to get lost in them, like she was starting to. Not too mention the guilt was starting to eat at her. She was thinking of Seb now, and the things they had been doing together. She couldn't see clearly anymore. She finally tore her eyes away from his and took a deep breath, unsure of where to look or what to think.
"Aw Teddy..." she found herself saying. Her hand reached up, and she didn't stop it this time. It landed on his shoulder and she felt a shock go through her. She took a tiny step closer before stopping, blinking once-twice. "Are you busy right now?" she asked, her voice incredibly hushed and gentle. She knew it couldn't just be fate that brought them together today. No, they needed to talk. She knew that.

When a smile appeared on Victoire's face, Teddy felt his stomach to a flip... but it was a good flip. He felt like a flock of butterflies had just flown down his throat and were flying around in his stomach. That smile always could do crazy things to him. Now it was no different. Seeing her happy and smiling was the only thing Teddy wanted. Even if he wasn't the reason... but this time, he had the slightest feeling that he was the reason behind that smile. He wondered for a moment if that was a bad thing to believe, if he was getting his hopes up. But the feeling passed soon enough. "Yo-your welcome," he said, stuttering a little but smiling all the same. It was nice talking to her like this.
Teddy was far too much of a coward to ask if she was seeing anyone. He didn't think he could handle it if she said "yes." While the question was eating away at him, he ignored it in the back of his mind and pushed on - maybe they would get to that point later. Teddy had time to convince himself that he could handle it if they got to that point.
As Victoire's hand reached forward, Teddy watched it a bit warily. His instincts told him to step back, but he couldn't bring himself to. He felt rooted to the concrete as she placed her hand on his shoulder. He raised an eyebrow at her, uncertain of what was about to come next. He would be lying if he said he wasn't nervous. He could feel his heart beginning to pound louder and louder in his chest. He swallowed hard, willing himself not to break into a sweat. When she touched him... it was like she was touching him for the first time again. He wanted to put his hand over her own, but Teddy was having to ignore a lot of what his instincts were telling him... such as leaning forward, just to be inches away from her lips. Teddy blinked, just as Victoire did. It took him a few delayed seconds until he could respond, and even then he could only muster shaking his own head.
"Uh, no - not at all," he was finally able to say.

The overwhelming desire to kiss Teddy was harder to resist than anything anyone on this earth should have to deal with. Especially when he stuttered a little and smiled sweetly at her. Still, she knew that would be incredibly inappropriate and she didn't even know what was going on right now. He had just gotten back, hadn't he? So there was no way he was seeing someone. Unless he had met some amazing exotic girl while out and about. That thought made her feel a sudden wave of anger, but she quickly pushed it aside. Was that really any of her business?
As he raised an eyebrow at her when her hand landed on his shoulder, Vic could tell that he was unsure and tense. Still, she waited patiently for him to respond. He seemed frozen for a moment, and she felt the same way. A flow of energy was running through her fingertips, but she couldn't pull away. She had committed to this moment and she had to stay there now. He was taking a long time to answer though!
Finally he claimed that he wasn't at all busy. She smiled a little and lifted her hand as if she was going to pull it away, but it just hovered there for a moment. "Should we... do you want to get a drink or-or something?" Now she was stuttering? No, Victoire was not a stutterer. She pulled her hand away completely and replaced her look of apprehension with a business like smile. "My errands can wait."

How badly did he want to kiss Victoire? Well, truth be told there was nothing more in the world, at this moment, that Teddy Lupin wanted more. He wanted to wrap his arms around her for the first time in years and hold her close, looking into her eyes just before meeting her lips with his own. He couldn't help but look at her lips as he thought of the scenario playing out in his head. Would she stop him? "Yeah, right," he thought to himself. Of course she would stop him. There had to be someone else in her life by now. Someone who had fallen in love with her for all of the same reasons that Teddy had...
Teddy had a feeling that he wasn't the only one feeling tense when they had touched. It was, after all, the first time either of them had done so in four years. It was bound to bring up some old memories and feelings but... for Teddy, those feelings had never gone away. He knew it had to be different now with her. Victoire always was more independent than Teddy was. He had relied on her so much, leaned on her for so many things. And while Teddy knew that it was a fair bit mutual, he had always known that Victoire could survive and would survive without him... on her own.
Did he want to get a drink? Inside Teddy was screaming "yes" but a part of him really wanted to tell Victoire "no." He didn't want to be more tempted to hold her or kiss her any more than he already was. But... Teddy was weak when it came to Victoire. Especially after all of this time. So he didn't stop himself. "I'd lo- he stopped. He couldn't say he would love to, even though he would. "Yeah, sure." There, that was casual enough. However, Teddy couldn't help but smile when Victoire said that he errands could wait. She was putting him before some previous plan she had already made and this... this got Teddy's hopes up in asuch a way that Teddy didn't even realize it.

"I'd lo'" she perked up a little as he said that, but he quickly switched to a more noncommittal phrase. She smiled, calmly so, and turned into the Leaky Cauldron. "So, what have you been working on?" she asked, leading him toward a table. She almost veered to the back, but her eyes landed on where she and Seb had sat not too long ago... she turned, veering a different way and taking a seat at another table, gesturing for him to sit across from her. "I mean, you must be busy what with the things going on... unless, have you been writing?" she knew that Teddy loved to write, of course she did. He hadn't completed the Auror Training Program, so she really had no idea what career path he was on right now. Was he even trying to pursue something? Maybe he was trying to write something really significant... or maybe he was just writing nonsense in a journal. Whatever it was, he was good at it. She remembered the letters they used to write, the ones he used to give her often. Still, she was the big-bag-ministry girl now... so what was he?
When the waiter came over Victoire simply ordered a butterbeer, for she wasn't much of a drinker. The most drinking she had ever done was... well, was that night with Seb at the Ministry. With all the things going on, it was amazing that the entire country wasn't drunk off their rockers, trying to get through the day. Minster Cain was no help, of course, throwing parties and saying everything was just fine in press conferences. He had the Auror office under his thumb and, well, Victoire was trying to do her best under him without stepping on his toes and getting herself in trouble.

Teddy followed closely behind Victoire as she led him to a table. It was almost... too close. He fell back slightly, feeling too reminded of their days in school when he would follow her through the Great Hall in the mornings to sit with her at the Slytherin table for breakfast, much to the dismay of their fellow badgers and snakes. He heard her speak and noticed the falter n her step for a brief second but followed as she continued, speaking as she did so. "Uh, yeah," he said, looking around the pub and then settling into a seat across from her. "Yeah, I've been writing." He nodded, but didn't elaborate much more than that. Something felt weird about being in this pub with Victoire... he couldn't quite put his finger on it. "I uh... just got back from Greece, actually."
When Victoire ordered a butterbeer, Teddy ordered the same. He looked around a bit, his eyes rolling over to an empty booth but he couldn't think of why the picture was so odd to him... he looked back at Victoire when the waiter brought them their drinks. "It wasn't exactly peachy to return to this whole mess," he said, raising his eyebrows as he took a sip of his butterbeer. He was, of course, referring to all the murders going on. On his first night back in the country, Teddy had found himself walking down the street that he had grown up in in Godric's Hollow. To the Potter's house. It was there that Teddy was informed of what had happened to James on the train and what had happened to Kingsley Shacklebolt. Then he remembered how close Victoire had been to Kingsley, and how she too was close to James.
"I'm... sorry about Kingsley," he said a bit awkwardly as he set his hands down on the table casually. He knew Victoire had to have worked with him, and knew she had to be grieving in some sort of way. He had seen her at the Order meeting a bit ago and so he knew that he didn't need to say anything about James or all of the other events happening in their world... he figured she had enough on her mind as is.

"Greece? Wow," she said, nodding a bit and letting her jaw drop a little, "did you write about Greece then? I'm sure it was lovely. I really do need to travel more..." she sort of veered off at that. She was so obsessed with the London Ministry, being a part of the wizarding world here that the idea of traveling just seemed out of the question. How could she possible take that time off? Hence another reason not to get into a serious relationship...
As he mentioned the mess he came back to, Victoire rolled her eyes and nodded a little rapidly, "you missed a lot. I'm glad you were able to make it to the Order meeting, though. Someone needed to speak up for James, you know," she honestly would have done it herself if he wasn't there, but letting him bring it up and supporting him was one of the best things at the time. It was good to show a united front on it, rather than one of them trying to bring it up all on their own.
As he mentioned Kingsley, Vic felt a little pang in her heart. She lifted her own hand, almost as if she were to place it on top of his, but just pulled it back to tuck her hair behind her ear. She looked down at the table. "Thank you... it's been... well," she shrugged, "it's fine."

Teddy smiled at the thought of Greece. "It was beautiful," he breathed dreamily. "Uh, yeah. I wrote about it... a bit," he said slowly, shrugging slightly. Truth be told, he had written about it but he had written about Victoire more. Honestly, while Greece had been a beautiful place to live for so long, he thought about Victoire so much that it really distracted from the beauty of the place. He was really only distracted and happy when he was talking to the locals. They were what made his time there bearable by himself. "You should consider it," he added casually. "It is really..." Teddy struggled for the correct word and when one came to mind, it seemed appropriate enough to say out loud. "Therapeutic."
Teddy winced at the mention of James, whom was practically his younger brother. He shook his head slowly, looking down and away from Victoire. "I can't believe he had to go through that..." he trailed off. No one should ever have to see what James did, stumbling upon that young girl's body. He couldn't imagine what that did to the guy's esteem and personality. Not to mention his mind. If Teddy were in his position, he likely would have gone mad. But James was strong. Teddy looked back at Victoire, actually curious now if she had any inside scoop on what the Ministry was doing to stop this. "Do you know if anyone is trying to find this murderer?" He asked. It was the first time during their whole conversation that Teddy didn't feel awkward or forced when he tried talking to her. It was like when they always used to talk... natural.
Every time that Victoire moved her delicate hand, Teddy wanted to reach for it and hold it in his own. It was a hard impulse to fight. He had spent so long holding those hands that now, as he sat near her, his instincts told him to do so. Even though he had gone just as long without holding them. He could tell the subject still stung. His brow furrowed and his mouth was formed in a sympathetic line. "I'm sorry, Vic," he said quietly, wanting more than ever to hold her hand in this moment.

As nice as the small talk about Greece was, Victoire almost wanted to get into the nitty gritty stuff. She wanted to tell him about Seb, about herself, about them... but she was going to wait, just a little longer. As he suggested that she consider traveling, explaining that it was therapeutic, she nodded and let out a breath of air. "Heaven knows I need therapy," she said, half joking. Okay, maybe a little less than half joking... "What else did you write about? Since you were in Greece but only wrote about Greece a bit-" she was getting to deep now, wasn't she? They used to talk about his writing, no problem, but now did she even have the right? At the mention of the murderer at Hogwarts, Vic tensed up. "No. I mean, Ministry wise no one is doing a damn thing. Minister Cain is a fool. He thinks everything is fine and those children were murdered on accident," she said, giving her best eye roll, "The Order is trying to get on top of it though, as you saw. Even though they have bigger fish to fry," she thought murdering kids was the biggest fish possible, but apparently not. As Teddy apologized for the death of Kinglsey, Vic shook her head, sitting up a little straighter, "thanks. Things are going to be fine. We have a great team now, save the minister. DW is a great guy and the adviser, Seb- Mr. Rockefeller is quite smart," she said, feeling a sinking in her stomach. Suddenly, an owl came flying into the pub headed toward their table. She recognized it. It was an emergency owl from her office. She stood, taking the letter from it's claws and unraveling it. "Oh..." she said, using her free hand to clutch the table. The minister was dead. "Teddy... oh, Teddy," she started to say... things were worse than she thought. She put the hand holding the letter over her mouth. Come on, Vic. Get it together. Get to the office. What are you doing? She was breaking down, that's what. @teddy (BOOM)
