10 December 2026
Frost settled across the Quidditch pitch as the sun set, earlier and earlier each day. The extensive darkness, the slow withdrawal of sunlight, neither of these things stopped the Ballycastle Bats from their gruelling training regiment. They were up at dawn, flying well past dusk and into the evening. There was hardly time for anything other than thought, fatigue, and sleep. Mickey kept them all in peak shape, determined to show the pundits that the Bats were a force to be reckoned with. That they could and would make it onto the national team for the World Cup. That he was a captain that had a team worth fighting for. The Bats’ performance as of late reflected this, having gone on a six game winning streak.
But the time for training was finished - and the holidays were fast approaching. The Bats were given a half day off to prepare for the annual holiday party for the Quidditch league, where they’d be able to rub elbows with scouts, fellow players, and more. Somehow, they had secured the west wing of Chatsworth House for the occasion. Luna suspected that some members of the British and Irish Quidditch Liaison team had confounded the residents of the house, and bribed them with an immeasurable sum of money. Luna knew that Bat’s didn’t get much in terms of sponsorship, but the entire league would be able to pay a pretty penny. No matter - she was just delighted to get an invite to such a lavish soiree.
Luna and Simon hadn’t spoken much more about her frightening visions, which had thankfully stopped after they had interrupted the young woman and her ritual. Luna had a strange feeling that it wouldn’t be the last that she heard of it, but hoped she wouldn’t be overcome by something so gruesome again. Either way, she knew she could count on Simon for his support.
Their situation had changed little over the past few months - Simon and Luna gravitated towards one another out of a matter of convenience, so Luna was convinced. She wrote off the warmth that spread throughout her body as mere familiarity, the sudden speed up of her heart in anticipation of an old rival turned friend. Their arrangement worked well for both of them, practicing together and sleeping together. They were simply keeping up their stamina.
The Christmas party would be the first occasion in which Luna saw Simon out of his Quidditch robes (and not completely starkers) since Halloween. She didn’t really know what to expect from the party, except that it was at a huge estate and no expense would be spared. That, and they would all have to dress in a way that was appropriate for this estate. Which, unfortunately, even meant no dress robes. After all, they didn’t want to put the muggles who lived there out too much.
Luna looked different from when she first joined the team. Her hair was longer, though commonly tied back in a single plait down her back. Her cheeks were fuller and her body more muscled rather than frail from malnourishment. She looked - and felt - more powerful than she ever had as a student at Hogwarts. She ran her fingers through her hair, taming it with Sleekeazy’s hair potion before twisting it back in a knot at the nape of her neck. She placed a silver comb in her hair before pulling on a silky, form-fitting number in bluish-grey. Luna appraised her appearance, deeming herself acceptable before turning on the spot to apparate to the previously fixed location. It was well hidden in the garden, and simple to make a grand entrance. Luna followed the procession of other Quidditch players in silence, entering the Western ballroom and immediately looking around for the most familiar face.

December had quickly fallen and Simon found himself feeling more conflicted than ever for the holidays. As much as he enjoyed the festivities, especially the copious amounts of alcohol and food, there was sadness feasting deep down inside him. This would be Simons first Christmas without Sofia, which was a weird realization when it hit him. Sometimes he didn't like how life continued to go on relentlessly. However, he knew it was certainly better than sulking, or being dead.
Simon showed up to the lavish estate in a well tailored suit and a prickle of anxiety in his gut. He wasn't sure what the night would have in store, since he hadn't ever been to a holiday party with the Bats. Simon wanted to behave around the big wigs, but that would be hard, considering Chaz already had a couple of buttons undone on his shirt as he passed Simon a strong drink. Simon eagerly took the drink, happy to have something to nurse for his nerves. He found himself easily chatting with teammates and other party goers, but Simon was a bit distracted in his boozed up state.
His icy blue eyes scanned the grand ballroom, searching for a familiar blonde head of hair in the crowd. There were many blonde tresses bobbing around, but none belonging to whom he was searching for. Until, he saw her enter the room. Her presence was like a fresh breath of air in the crowded room.
The half-vampire made his way over to her, quickly slinking away from Chaz while he was distracted with another blonde with big boobies.
"Hey you," he greeted with a tipsy smile, easily offering her a warm embrace. As they pulled away, Simons eyes couldn't help but look her up and down with admiration. Luna looked stunning in her gown with her hair pinned at the nape of her neck. "You clean up nicely." he teased lightly, unable to hide the flicker from his eye as a chuckle slipped past his lips.

The place was grander than Luna had expected, but it wasn't really like she made a habit of visiting historical country houses just for fun. In fact, Luna couldn't remember the last time she'd actually visited a historical site or manor. Not counting Hogwarts, which was now in ruins. As a girl, she'd lacked interest in school and wriggled her way out of class trips to various different sites. It was a bit of a shame, looking back on it now. The place was incredible.
Feeling very much like a regency era society girl, Luna swept into the ballroom, her gown of silver silk clinging to her frame. Luna knew she looked well from the eyes that seemed drawn to her, and a smirk played on her painted lips. For so long, Luna had hated her body. It was never just right. Her mind had been the one in the wrong though, and months of therapy had helped the young Trelawney learn that she needed to nourish her body rather than punish it. It had resulted in a general uptick of her mood and her Quidditch skills even. Though Luna loathed to admit she was wrong, she had to say that she was much better off now.
Luna's clear grey eyes scanned the room, and in mere moments, Simon was approaching her. She exhaled a sigh of relief - though she arranged her features into a pleasant mask. Simon could never know just the sort of turmoil that rolled in her stomach at the sight of him. She remembered how much she hated being wrong, and smiled primly at Simon. "I could say the same about you," said Luna, allowing her face to relax more into a natural grin. He embraced her and Luna held on for a beat longer than she should have, mentally chastising herself for the hurt she was setting herself up to feel.
"Well, are we just going to stand here or are we going to get me some champagne?" asked Luna, her eyes dropping from Simon's face to his outfit, then back to his lips. Blinking, Luna gave Simon a mischievous smirk before twisting her fingers in his and leading him to the bar. She collected a coup of champagne and sipped it, looking around the ballroom. "You'd think the Quidditch league would go broke after a party like this," she observed. Her face twitched as she spotted Chaz, up to his eyes in silicone. "Do you think it's useful to have those in case you fall off your broom? Soften the landing?" she tilted her head slightly, eyes narrowing. Simon's gaze burned on her, but she didn't give into the desire to turn to him and steal him away from the festivities. Besides, there were so many useful people here. So many opportunities to further her career, rub elbows with scouts for different teams. But Luna had slowly come to the realisation that she was rather content in her position on the Bats - and that more than anything terrified her.

Simon couldn't help but marvel at how her body fit in his hands, a moment longer than acceptable. However, the worry of their teammates noticing them no longer surfaced. They were too busy tonight, and probably getting bored of making the 'joke' considering the pair didn't react to it anymore. Simon knew there was something more going on, only he was a master of denial. There were days he hoped Luna wouldn't bring it up because he wasn't sure where the conversation would lead to. If things got too real, they'd probably end up fighting. They both agreed that their position on the Bats was more important than anything in their lives at the moment, so keeping their arrangements under wraps was the best idea for the both of their careers. Friends with Benefits was a treacherous slope but so far they seemed to be navigating it fine. Simon didn't feel as lonely as he had when he first moved to Ireland so that was a plus.
Luna made a joke about just standing around and he nodded, unable to hide a smile from spreading across his face. "Oh, excuse me for wasting precious time.." he told her with a chuckle, easily lacing his fingers with hers as she led him to the extravagant bar. There was a comfort he found in her grabbing his hand without a second thought, though he didn't want to completely recognize it. It was nice though. Especially in his boozed up state.
Simon looked over at Chaz and the blonde as Luna made a comment about her silicone implants. He shrugged his shoulders lazily, "I see them making her very top heavy, she'd probably fall faster to the ground." he jested playfully, exchanging a look with Chaz from across the room. One similar that he'd shoot Simon when chatting up Luna, or any female. "Perhaps they act more as floatation devices." he added with a cheeky smile, passing a tall fluke of bubbly to the blonde.
The half-vampire tilted his head to the side and without a beat stated, "To big ol' boobies." he raised his glass to hers in a fake cheers, pulling a small smile to show he was joking. Simon didn't have a preference. Boobs of all shapes and sizes were great.

Luna smirked, twining her fingers in Simon's before leading him off to the bar. She collected a coup of champagne, then twisted around to scan the room. She spotted Chaz and an unfamiliar blonde, and observed that her fake breasts could potentially be an aid or a hindrance. She wondered if Simon preferred that, though if he did, he probably would be over there with her and not stood here with Luna. Satisfaction curled in her belly, leading to shame. She shouldn't be thinking of these things, tiny wins where Simon was involved. After all, they were just friends. Friends who had a peculiar way of expending their extra energy.
The sight of Simon and Luna together was no longer shocking for anyone on the Bats. Even if they played different positions, it was clear they worked together seamlessly. And their flawless partnership on the pitch translated to a higher number of goals scored, so Mickey couldn't really complain. Luna's grey eyes slid over to Simon, sneaking a glance at him. He did look really, really handsome with his hair combed neatly and the well tailored suit accentuating the bulk of muscle he'd put on from their gruelling training sessions. She took a large gulp of champagne and nearly choked at Simon proposed a toast to big ol boobies.
"Sometimes I forget you're still a teenager. Then you go ahead and say shit like that," said Luna, though she was grinning all the same. "To tiddies big and small, I think you mean," she added, because she too was a teenager. Luna took a more measured gulp, and looked around the room. Somehow, every couple of seconds she found her attention trailing back to Simon, and she wrinkled her nose. "Are we taking bets as to how long Chaz and that girl will last in public? Will they get kicked out, or do you think they'll sneak off on their own?" asked Luna, lowering her voice slightly. She leaned into Simon unconsciously, craving his proximity and his touch.
Just as their bodies pressed flush against one another, the song changed. Luna beamed, turning to Simon. "I love this one! Let's dance!" said Luna brightly, leaving no room for argument or suggestion. She downed the rest of her champagne, placed the glass on a passing tray, and dragged Simon to the dance floor. "Bet you never thought you'd see bossy old Trelawney throwing shapes on the floor," said Luna, swaying her hips in time with the beat.

Simons lips curled upwards, tilting his glass toward her. He knew it was a bit impolite, but he and Luna were used to that sort of banter together. Something Simon never thought he'd see, well, ever. "That's my prerogative." he shrugged, matching her smile and clicking her glass before taking a generous sip. The champagne mingled nicely with the whiskey and other alcoholic beverages he had consumed that night before seeing Luna, leaving him with a growing buzz. Simon was afraid of being sloppy, but tonight he had a feeling Chaz would probably take the cake for that one.
Luna leaned in toward him, asking what she thought Chaz and the big breasted blonde would do. His hand fell to the small of her back, the alcohol blurring his inhibitions slightly because he didn't retract the hand. "Oh, I bet they're already on their way out of here..." Simon chuckled, settling his empty glass on a passing tray as Luna announced that she wanted to dance. He agreed easily, the way her face brightened up to a song she enjoyed making him smile unintentionally. Usually he liked dancing because it usually meant there were females in close proximity. He had enough confidence to get him by on the dance floor, quite proud of his ability to moonwalk.
Simon shook his head from side to side to the music when she asked if he ever expected to see her on the dance floor throwing shapes. "Maybe throwing quaffles or bludgers to the face, but not dancing." he jested playfully, reminiscing the time at Hogwarts. That was the same day they snogged on the pitch for the first time, which was the beginning of their saga.. Simon spun her toward him, smiling down at her with too much admiration for someone who was supposedly a friend. He wasn't thinking about what he was doing in that moment, it was just nice to have Luna close. Simon leaned in toward her ear, "Pretty sure I'd beat you in a dance battle though." the half-vamp egged her on playfully, quite confident Luna wouldn't be down for a dance battle in front of all these high class folks. Then, again, she had a way of surprising him.

A chill ran down Luna's spine at Simon's nearness, and she chuckled, glancing around to find Chaz and the mystery girl in the crowd again. Unsurprisingly, they had disappeared. Luna hoped he had a good night at least, but knowing Chaz, he wouldn't know what happened in the morning. The tune changed then, and a delighted Luna dragged Simon out onto the dance floor. Her hips swayed to the beat, her head bouncing a bit to the rhythm, and she asked Simon if he ever expected her on the dance floor.
"Can't help my impeccable aim, love," said Luna with a laugh. "Your nose is just such a good target," she added with a grin. Simon spun Luna into his side and beamed down at her - and Luna's countenance reflected the joy on his own. He leaned in towards her ear, challenging her to a dance battle. Without thinking, Luna turned her head and instead captured Simon's lips with her own. The kiss was short, but no less electric than usual. Time seemed to slow down, the music fading away with the crowd.
When Luna broke the kiss, time sped back up. The din of the music and the chattering crowd and tinkling laughter assaulted her, but she had eyes only for the man before her. She said nothing as the song ended, and a slower one picked up. "A dance battle? Think we need a more appropriate song for it though," said Luna. "Do you waltz, Svendson?" asked Luna, tilting her head in challenge. She took his hand in hers and placed the other around her waist. "You know, for athletes, the people here definitely know how to party like royalty," said Luna. "Or rather what I suppose royalty would party like. There would be more drugs though," she amended.

Luna turned her face, tenderly catching Simons lips with hers. It felt lovely in the moment, he didn’t think twice about it as his hands raised to her face to kiss her back. That would be a problem. Simon enjoyed the moment - problem number two. They didn’t seem to be thinking about what that public display of affection would entail or what people would think. For now, he’d enjoy the stolen kisses and happy glances. They made him feel alive. Hell, in that moment he knew he actually felt happy.
As the music changed, Luna challenged Simon to a waltz instead, placing his hand on her waist. Simons hand dared to dip to her bum for a split second before raising to the appropriate spot, ”Waltz works too,” he agreed, a smile breaking at the corners of his lips. Simon learned how to waltz only because of Sofia forcing him when they were young kids. ”I’ve drank a decent amount tonight…so watch for your toes..” Simon warned her with a laugh. He stepped forward, attempting to lead the waltz
”People this high of caliber typically do drugs in the loo.” Simon told her, not actually joking this time. ”Probably out of shame…but also because they don’t wanna share.” he quipped with a chuckle. His eyebrows quirked, ”What kinda drugs are we talkin’?” he asked playfully, assuming she was looking for more recreational activities to embark in. The last time they smoked weed, she ended up taking them into a creepy cave with a dark wizard, so he wasn't sure how he felt about that though.

Luna snorted, shaking her head. "Blimey, Simon, when are you not having anything to drink?" she chided, though she wasn't unhappy. The champagne pleasantly warmed her bones, only adding to the heat spreading from her chest. When Simon's hand wandered lower, she arched a brow, shooting him a look. The smug set of his lips made her laugh, and she said nothing.
Simon observed that usually, drugs were done on the down low. Luna let Simon lead, thinking over their options. "I think I'd rather remember this night," she admitted, her voice softer than she'd expected. He spun her expertly, and when they were face to face again, Luna was breathless, her cheeks pink. She grinned at Simon. "Don't want to incite any more blood and bone visions, do we?" she added after a moment. She'd been seriously alarmed by the vision, even if they had managed to stop the ritual in its tracks before the mage could complete it. Simon hadn't mentioned the experience again, to which Luna assumed that he had no desire for displaying that sort of courage again. No matter, as he most certainly had other ways of showing off.
The song finished, and Luna took a step back from Simon, appraising him. "Reckon they've got a hedge maze?" asked Luna, glancing sidelong at Simon. "Or... some other things to explore?" she added, her voice heavy with suggestion. Luna swiped a class of champagne from a passing house elf, downing it before taking two more for the pair of them.

Simon shrugged happily with a guilty smile when Luna asked him when he wasn’t having a drink. That statement probably wasn’t much of a surprise to Luna, considering the half-vampire was known to indulge in recreational usage of drugs and smoking like a chimney on a regular basis. He learned to be smart about it, with a little bit of insight from Chaz - who probably wasn't the best teammate/person to take advice from. Tonight wouldn’t be a night to openly indulge in anything but alcohol. The last time they smoked a joint, she had visions, leading to her screaming on the floor of his flat. And not to mention the cave expedition…Simon nodded agreeably when she stated she wanted to remember the night, and seemingly read his mind by mentioning the blood and bones. ”Agreed." he nodded, feigning a more calm and relaxed expression. They hadn’t talked about that incident since the time it happened. Sometimes it was probably easier to pretend like it didn’t happen in fear of triggering Luna's memory into having more visions. It was all very bizarre.
The look Luna gave him after his hand traveled too low, made him smile smugly at her, briefly placing it in a more appropriate location on. They moved across the dance floor in a waltz. Simon tried his best to be a strong lead, though he staggered a couple of times, causing his face to redden as he tried to chuckle it off. Thank Merlin the song ended and Luna lost interest in dancing. Simon had other things on his mind after having his hands on her body and skin, he found himself yearning to steal her away from the party so he could explore her body like wonderland. There wasn't much need for suggestion after the look she gave him. "There are plenty of wonders to explore here.." Simon waggled his eyebrows, finishing off another half filled fluke of bubbly before Luna by grabbed two more. It took everything in him not to mirror her and grab two more. There was no need for defensive drinking when there was plenty of alcohol to go around for the night. "Lets go!" he bubbled over with a bit of drunken excitement as they started for the outside area.
Simon knocked back the glass Luna passed over to him and placed it on a passing tray so he could free his hands. As they stepped out into grand outside entertainment area, there was a mistletoe hung above the walkway. Simon froze as he looked up with a laugh, "We can't risk any bad luck for next year, so-" he closed the distance as he leaned forward, grabbing her face softly, and pressed his lips to hers without second thought. It was certainly too passionate for a 'work' function but he was boozed up enough to not care. Plus the mistletoe was hung by someone there so it was an opportunity that shouldn't have been passed up.

Luna's heart thundered in her chest as Simon spun her around. For a split second, she forgot about everything troubling her. The disturbing visions, the lack of communication from her sisters, the ongoing struggle between what she wanted with Simon versus what she was allowed to feel. Luna freed herself from those inconsequential worries, just for the moment. She came fact to face with Simon once more, her cheeks pink, her smile bright. Simon wasn't the most talented dancer, though nor was she. "We perform better in the air," said Luna with a smirk.
Luna voiced her proposal and Simon was eager to accept. They spirited away from the dancing and chattering couples into the dimly lit night, with fairy lights lining the hedges. It was miraculous the way the league had managed to decorate the place so that muggles wouldn't be any wiser as to what sort of event was going on. Luna grabbed two glasses of champagne and handed one to Simon as they escaped into the night.
"Are you implying you are one of those wonders, Mr Svendson?" asked Luna coyly. "You do think rather highly of yourself, don't you?" she added after a moment. As they passed through the archway Simon pointed out the mistletoe that hung above them."Mistletoe," observed Luna pointlessly, but the words were barely past her lips before Simon kissed her. There was no second thought to it, and Luna returned his kiss eagerly. He tasted of champagne, whisky, and something so undeniably him. Though Luna knew it was wrong, that this wasn't appropriate especially with the way he had denied her all those months ago, knew that mixing work and passion was wrong, but Luna didn't want to be right. She wanted whatever she could have with Simon, and stolen moments weren't enough.
When Simon pulled away, Luna was certain her cheeks were scarlet. "I'd like to thank whoever set that up," she said, more to herself than anything. A light breeze ruffled Simon's hair as she eyed him, her cool, grey eyes calculating, weighing her options. "Well, their hedge maze isn't going to explore itself, is it?" asked Luna witha grin. She finished the glass of champagne and took Simon's hand in hers, leading the way into the dimly lit maze.
There was some sort of eerie character to the maze, and the music from the hall died away almost at once. She glanced over at Simon and raised a brow. "Private," she observed, before taking the first right turn in the maze. "Do you think there's a prize if we make it to the centre?" asked Luna.

As Simon stepped outside onto the dimly lit patio, his warm face was met with flickering fairy light and cool night air. The air was refreshing in his inebriated state, though a chill crept up his spine. His lips flickered upwards as she shot a bit of banter about him implying he was one of the wonders of the world. ”Well, I was more implying you as one of those wonders, but I’ll take it..” he chuckled with an overly confident smile. The mistletoe seemed to appear at perfect timing and he was grateful for it. After their lips locked, his hands gripped her waist for a moment longer than appropriate. Simon released from the kiss, unwrapping his arms from her waist with a growing cheeky smile. An involuntary red hue flushed to his face as thoughts of Luna swirled through his mind. Fuck, that couldn’t be good.
Simon and Luna started for the hedge maze, immediately the walls around them closed, surrounding them in leaves and branches. The festive holiday music was muffled behind branches and leaves. Simon felt a hint of anxiety at first, a nip at his gut reminding him, ‘wow this is a small space’, ‘what if you can’t get out’… he pushed those thoughts away, happy to have Luna by his side.
His eyes looked up and around the maze curiously, ”The prize of completing the maze is not being stuck in it for all of eternity.” he told her in a dark tone, eyes widening seriously as he froze. Obviously he was joking. After only a brief moment, he shoved Luna towards a bush playfully, ”Race ya to the center.” he said before drunkenly running off in the opposite direction. Simon was immediately met with a dead end, but he waited around the corner quietly to scare Luna.

Luna blushed crimson at Simon's offhand comment. "Careful, Svendsen. Someone might think you have a heart buried deep in there," said Luna, nudging him gently to conceal how she really felt. How her chest swelled with emotion, how the smile on her face brightened a thousand kilowatts. Still, she would hide her heart and keep denying that she in fact felt something raw and real with Simon. Their relationship had somehow devolved from lovers to nothing, to teammates and then to something more. It terrified Luna as much as it filled her with wonder and elation.
For a moment, Luna hesitated. She wanted to freeze time. But she heard herself challenging Simon to explore the hedge maze, and he grabbed onto the opportunity. The pair of them started for the maze and as soon as they passed through the first row, an eerie silence fell upon them. Luna arched a brow at Simon, but said nothing. She didn't want to scare him. "I'll one up you. Get to the centre of the maze first and the other has to admit the winner is the better Quidditch player," said Luna with a smirk. She took a step forward, but Simon shoved her aside - his superior size and mass sent her flying into a bush. "You prick!" she called after him, grinning as she plucked a twig from her hair. But he was already gone.
Luna brushed down the silk of her dress, before pulling it up around her knees. She kicked off the heels that were sure to impede her, and set off. She had drank significantly less than Simon, which meant she heard his snuffling breathing as he settled himself around the corner of the maze. She could turn right, and find Simon once more. Or she could turn left, and continue on further into the maze. She chose the left branch, her way lit faintly by faeries that danced lazily in the air. "You won't win waiting around like that," called Luna over her shoulder, a smirk playing at her lips. She turned right, then left again before she was faced with a three-way fork.

”Loser has to scream it at the top of their lungs from the center of the maze.” he upped her stakes with a flicker in his eye, a smile spreading involuntarily from the bubbly mingling in his stomach. He couldn’t help but take a moment of appreciation to notice how lovely she looked with her hair pinned back in a silky dress that hugged her form in all of the right places.
In Simon’s drunken excitement for a challenge, he wasn’t considering that Luna was in a dress and heels. Shoving her into the bush while she was dressed most exquisitely, probably wasn’t the most gentlemanly gesture…but they were only ‘friends’, right? Hell, they were teammates so this sort of banter should have been encouraged…Maybe if they didn’t frequently have the others tongue in the others mouths and galore..
The half-vampire huffed and puffed down the first row of hedges and awaited for Luna to come around the corner. But she didn’t. Bugger.
His breathing was too loud and Luna had seemingly anticipated his next move because of it, taking the opposite fork so he couldn't jump out at her. She stated that he shouldn't just be hanging around and passed him up on the other side of the wall. ”Oh, fuuuck” he lamented, heavy steps following after her as a fit of laughter consumed him. The fairies floated above the hedges, giving him an idea of where Luna was. Simon thought he was behind her, but misjudged a fork, leading him to a dead end. Simon stopped on his heels and breathlessly started for another row of long hedges, ”I thought giving up cigs would help me breathe!” he howled with laughter. At this point, he was willing to accept defeat, only because it was Luna. And she was indeed one of the greatest quidditch players he had ever played with.

Luna hid her snicker with her hand, her narrowed grey eyes following Simon as he dashed off around the corner of the maze. In his inebriated state, perhaps he didn't realise how loudly he was breathing - she could tell where he was immediately. Luna wondered mildly if she concentrated hard enough, she'd be able to have a vision from his point of view. But her powers didn't work that way - they seemed to only happen when something dire occurred, or to scare here. Thankfully, nothing of the sort had happened in months, and Luna was too afraid to try and tap into it again.
Facing the three way fork, Luna called out to Simon. A sense of dread was prickling at her spine, and she fought to keep the panic from her voice. His laughter was loud and sharp, coming from not too far to the right. She took the right fork and her pace quickened, but she only came across empty hedge. "You gave up cigarettes?" Luna called back to him, freezing in surprise. Maybe she would have noticed that the taste of his lips had altered slightly if she hadn't been so caught up in the way kissing him felt like the most delicious electric shock.
Turning again, Luna finally found herself in the centre of the hedge. She exhaled sharply, and the faeries that danced around the tops of the hedges started doing cartwheels in celebrations. Luna let out a breathy laugh, though inexplicable fear still lapped at her. "Simon? Come here. I found the centre," said Luna, unable to completely mask her feelings. She withdrew her wand and pointed it at the sky. "Periculum," she murmured, shooting red sparks into the air. Hopefully, surrounding muggles would think that they were just fireworks.
Luna tried to settle her heartbeat, but as a disheveled and drunken Simon appeared in the gap between the hedges, Luna couldn't stop herself from running over and throwing her arms around him. They stood there, swaying in the dim light of the faeries, Luna clutching Simon like a lifeline. Each breath drew calm into her body. "Now you've got to say I'm the best," said Luna at last, pulling away slightly from Simon to look him full in the face.
