Wish I could explain it better I wish it wasn't true Fenrir Greyback. Evy could still recall when she’d first heard the name, but she couldn’t really recall the first time anyone had told her about the connection to her family. Frowning, she tried to think back but just couldn’t recall. By the time she learned more about Fenrir in terms of his infamy, she was much older and naturally curious for a while as she met Greybacks at school. But the novelty of that had worn off quickly in her first year. And then Evy just never really thought about it again. Nobody had seen Fenrir in some time, or it certainly would have ended up on the front page of the Prophet. Her parents never mentioned him, and Evy had never asked about their life in those days.
But now—well, it was all she could think about. Evy swiftly grabbed the half-empty wine glass from Callisto’s hand right before it fell over, and a barely audible snore escaped her mouth. Evy placed it on the kitchen counter as she noted the many empty wine bottles. There had been more, but they had been thrown against walls during the previous chaos. Their parents had continued to yell—well, her mother had while Evy struggled to read her father’s expression, and then they locked themselves away for the full moon. Slipping back into the routine as if it was just any other day. It was clear that neither Mina nor Callisto knew what their mother was talking about or alleging. So there wasn’t any point in asking them. But the mere thought of Dakoda not being their father’s child made Evy’s stomach flip. The feeling of betrayal was very familiar to her by now.
The dogs curled up in their beds, and Evy sat on the other end of the couch, mindlessly scrolling through her phone again. She was exhausted and it was far past midnight, but her mind was too restless to sleep.

▲ Mina had felt nauseous since arriving home from the walk earlier in the evening. The weight of everything they had just bore witness to as their parents fought was not how she had wanted to spend her holidays at home. If tonight hadn’t been a full moon, she probably would have gone back to her apartment and drank herself into a stupor. Literally anything was better than being in the family house right now. The only problem was that she was worried something more would come of it with their parents already riding the werewolf high. Once they were in form, there was no telling what could happen while they were turned and locked up. Leaving Evy alone wasn’t an option and Callisto agreed with that sentiment because she stayed too. She didn’t even want to drink, which only brought her back to the way she had been right after Dakoda had died. The same wounds opened up once again, but this time she was questioning whether he had even known. It all made so much sense now. The story had always been that Fenrir came to turn or kill all of the Oliveira children because of how their parents had abandoned his pack. But for it to be because he was trying to reclaim one of his children? That was the same exact story she had heard by the various Greyback children she’d bumped into over the years. Sarah being turned was simply an added bonus. A reminder that none of their children were safe while he was still alive. Having climbed into her old bed, Mina had barely moved since her parents and Sarah went to turn for the night, leaving Evy under the watchful and drunk care of Callisto. It was probably the other way round by now, and deciding it was safe to head back out of the room, she did so. Callisto was passed out on the couch, and Mina could see the glow of cellular light from the other end. That had to be Evy, endlessly scrolling like she’d been hours earlier. When everything was still the same. Thankfully it was dark in the living room because Mina knew she probably looked like shit. “That’s going to hurt your eyes,” she said quietly, her voice cracking from how dry it was. Taking a seat on the floor with her back up against the couch, she let her head fall back into it. “How much did she have?” Referring to Callisto, who was snoring loudly. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Wish I could explain it better I wish it wasn't true The scene was familiar. Someone older than Evy passed out on the couch from too much wine. Usually, it was their mother, but she was in the basement with their father and Sarah. A typical full moon. So far, there hadn’t been any noise or indication of anything but the fear, knowing that a simple boarded-up door with some charms stood between them and three werewolves never left. Nothing had ever happened, but the thought was enough to make her heart race slightly. Mina had gone to her old room while Evy had put up with pestering questions from Callisto stemming from school to internship applications and everything in between.
She thought of her brother once more. Dakoda had been a kind but typical older brother. And she couldn’t imagine him being related to a monster. Then again, Evy knew at least one Greyback. Max has been in the year ahead of her and a Prefect for their house. She seemed…normal. Evy looked up at Mina or where she thought she was. In the dark, the bright light of her phone screen didn’t let her eyes adjust properly. So with an annoyed grunt, she repositioned herself on the couch slightly and shut off her phone while her eyes adjusted to the dimmer light. ”You sound like Callisto.” Evy commented, perhaps Mina had been spending too much time with their older sister.
Glancing at Callisto when asked about the wine, Evy looked back. ”Bottle and a half.” Her response was casual. ”I gave her another glass when she started asking me personal questions.” Again, her confession was casual, but it had been an easy way to escape. And at least one of them would get some semblance of sleep without their thoughts racing. Plus it had been a little bit of an act of desperation. Evy’s sisters knew when she was lying nine times out of ten, or at least Callisto did. She didn’t need that her probing about her personal life.
The elephant in the room was still that fight they had overheard and witnessed. After an awkward pause and Evy fidgeting in her seat—picking a little aggressively at her fingernail as her anxiety came and went. ”Do you think it's true?” Their mother yelling at their father wasn’t new per se, but this screaming match had felt different. Evy felt like something had shifted. It was the same feeling she had when Sarah took off after her expulsion and when Dakoda died. The ground she walked on didn’t feel the same anymore. Callisto had clearly not wanted to talk about it, and Sarah was in the basement, though Evy knew that her oldest sister didn’t typically hold back with her.

▲ Sounding like Callisto and being like Callisto were two completely different things, and Mina was thankful that there was still a distinction between the two of them. Living with her older sister over the past few years had definitely led to a number of attributes rubbing off on her, more than they had while growing up. Some were good habits, like tidying up more often or being mindful of others, both of which she had practically ignored for the first twenty years of her life. Maybe it was something that came with age and experience. Or trauma. Mina didn’t really know what had caused her to act the way she did now, but everyone around her seemed to think she was better now than how she had been immediately after graduating from Hogwarts. Remembering her Friday nights was an amazing feeling too. She didn’t respond to Evy’s comment about that though, as she was slightly more worried about how much Callisto had drank. “That’s about normal…” she answered quietly. Normal since Dakoda died. It shouldn’t have been a regular occurrence for Callisto yet every weekend or off day where she absolutely didn’t have to be at work or watching Sebastian led to excessive drinking. How had the two of them managed to reverse their roles? When Evy mentioned that she’d forced another glass into their older sister to avoid answering questions, Mina threw a thumbs up at her. That was the only way to get her to shut-up in that state. The already fiery Callisto only became more belligerent whilst drunk. It was not a sight to behold. She clearly took after their mother… Mina hesitated at the next question. Their mother didn’t have any reason to lie about something like that, and it wasn’t like her to go absolutely ballistic. At least it hadn’t been like her prior to Dakoda dying. Mina had heard that there had been moments of lashing out that had been completely uncommon outside of the full moon. It wasn’t a good sign at all. “I-I think so…” her voice cracked slightly as she bite down on her lower lip. She didn’t want to return to the state she’d been in all evening but it was so hard to control it when it kept digging itself back up. Letting out a long exhale, she continued, “It makes sense, sort of. Like when you put all the pieces together, it’s just like what he does with the rest of his children.” Revenge for abandoning him had worked out perfectly fine as the cover story all these years but retribution for hiding his son? That sounded so much more like the Fenrir Greyback she’d heard stories of. “Evy, we don’t have to get into it tonight. We’re all exhausted.” Her brain felt fried, and the hours spent lying in bed all night was probably her limit on sleep for the next couple of days. “I can wake up Cal and we can apparate to our place if you want to go too. Staying here is just going to suck…” Being around the werewolves already did, and when they were all pissed at each other could only spell outcomes they’d never seen as a family. Wish I could explain it better I wish it wasn't true Evy might have learned a thing or two from Mina. As the sibling closest in age, Evy had quickly followed the mischievous girl around like a shadow when Callisto wasn’t looking. Dakoda would smirk and pretend he didn’t see them, going along with whatever they were trying to “sneakily” do. And their father was much the same. Then their mother and Callisto would show up and ruin their fun while Sarah rolled her eyes. But she was surprised when Mina didn’t simply brush off her question or avoid answering altogether. That’s what had become typical. Avoiding the question because Evy was too young to know.
And yet…Evy almost wished Mina had avoided the question. Hearing the confirmation out loud was strange. Evy fidgeted in her seat and pulled her knees to her chest with her arms resting on top. Curling up like this was comforting, and she’d done so so often as a child during full moons or whenever her parents fought. It was easy to hide in a corner like this. While her eyes welled up a little, she blinked through it. ’Not all of them.’ She thought. Was Max one of the lucky ones? ”That’s terrible.” Evy found herself whispering. Had Dakoda even known? Had their father? But she couldn’t imagine living and wondering if Fenrir would just appear one day for her. It was horrible to think about.
It hurt. And Evy was tired of finding out things by accident or alone. She was tired of being left out of family details because she was ‘too young’. Well, regardless, this was her family too. Didn’t she have a right to know what happened to her brother? The frustration made her eyes start to well up again. ”I thought I knew him.” Dakoda was frozen in time in her mind. ”But this and the stuff with Sarah…” Maybe it made more sense now? ”I guess he wasn’t who I thought he was.” After she spoke, there was a sinking feeling from her chest to her stomach. There was nothing like the image of your beloved late older brother simply shattering like a fallen picture frame.
Evy sighed and willed herself not to cry. Not now. She was too tired. But she did nod at Mina’s invitation. ”Anywhere but here.”

▲ She already loathed this feeling of defeat – that Dakoda was but wasn’t one of them. That didn’t mean anything to her, as he was still her older brother. But he wasn’t here to take part in what was going on and it was so incredibly unfair. That was the part she hated the most about all of this. Whether or not he knew prior to his death was certainly a question she was going to be asking herself for a long time. If Sarah didn’t know, then there was a good chance that he didn’t either. Their mum wasn’t this hot of a mess with wine while he was still alive and had never gotten to the point of drunkenly spilling decades old secrets like she had tonight. The most anyone could ever do was persuade her to let a glass of wine or two slide when they were underage. This was a huge leap from one to the other. “I know. I fucking hate him for it,” Mina responded, her voice rising back up in the moment of anger. None of the Greybacks she knew deserved what had happened to them. She knew of some that lost their entire families in the slaughter that ended with them turned, and others that struggled merely because of their surname. She’d taken for granted that the Oliveira name didn’t mean nearly as much, if at all to anyone that wasn’t aware of their werewolf secret. Fenrir had to be a decrepit old man by now, but Mina knew if she ever came across him, she’d do everything in her power to put him down. It would prevent any more heartache and horrors from happening. Mina felt her heart sink when Evy spoke about thinking she knew who their brother was. “You did know him…I don’t think it would change who he was at all if he’d known who he was related to.” She didn’t recall there ever being a lot of interaction between Dakoda and the Greyback siblings at the time, except outside of mentioning the other werewolves at school. Maybe he didn’t actually know… She gathered herself extremely fast when Evy agreed to leaving. There were a few options: they could leave Cal and bring Titania, or leave the dog with the family dogs and drag Cal’s drunk, half-asleep butt home. She was probably fine staying asleep on the couch. “We could leave her here…she can keep the dogs company,” Mina whispered, pulling her phone out to send Callisto a text explaining where they had gone. “Go grab whatever you need and we can get out of here.” Taking the initiative like this felt sort of strange and adult like. Normally that felt gross, but whenever things about Dakoda popped up it seemed like she was required to act her age. To be the responsible older sibling for once. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Wish I could explain it better I wish it wasn't true Question after question queued up in her mind, but every time she went to speak, her throat felt tight, and she didn’t trust herself to not burst into tears. Reality felt far different than how she pictured her life in her mind. Not that she’d ever thought the Olivera's were picture perfect or anything. But they’d been happy or happy enough. Evelyn had a mother, a father, and older siblings. A roof over her head, and she’d never been really alone. The basics, as it were. Her sisters were all so different, but they all showed they cared about Evy in their own way, and Dakoda had as well. What more could she want?
But that was all just a lie, wasn’t it? Just one lie stacked on top of another, waiting to tumble down once the threshold of wine had been met. Their parents fighting wasn’t anything new. Evy had almost assumed all parents did the same until her friends told different stories at school. Their family was just another in the long list of casualties and collateral damage, with Fenrir Greyback in the center. ”Wh—why did he turn Sarah?” Evy cleared her throat. It didn’t make sense. Sarah couldn’t have been his daughter if Dakoda was Fenrir's son. At least the timelines Evy had overheard didn’t make sense.
She felt the vile hatred in Mina’s tone, though there likely wasn’t a soul that spoke kindly of the man—monster—whatever Fenrir Greyback was. But it wasn’t as if anyone knew where he was, he might have died in a ditch far out in the country, and nobody would ever know. Maybe that was getting her hopes too high. Evy didn’t respond to Mina, leaning her head and arms and looking away for a moment. She missed him terribly, especially now. What would Dakoda have said as they overheard that fight? How would he have reacted? Evy had questions, and it was worse that he wasn’t here in person to reassure them that it didn’t change things.
But he wasn’t. And he never would be. Evy sniffed and tried to subtly wipe her eyes. At least the room wasn’t well lit. ”Right…” Walking into her room, she grabbed her charger, an extra sweater, some clothes she’d left on her bed, and a few other random things and stuffed it into her backpack. Callisto probably wouldn’t be happy that she got left behind, but Evy didn’t want to drag her far taller sister anywhere. At least the ‘I’m the youngest’ card was good for something. Walking back, she met Mina by the front door. And they stepped out, made sure the door was locked, and very quickly arrived at the apartment Mina and Callisto shared.
”Do you know any of them?” Evy asked, dropping her backpack near the couch and dropping herself in one of the corners. "The Greybacks--there was one in the year above me. She was a Prefect.” Evy hadn’t known her well or even spoke to her often. Preferring to sit with Luna or bother Nate in the Common Room. Mina’s earlier words still run in her head. She clung desperately to her memory of her brother. She imagined Mina and Callisto did as well though Mina had been closer to him than Evy. ”I just—“ She hesitated, looking down where she anxiously picked at one of her fingernails. ”Sarah said that he…she said some stuff about Dakoda and—“ Evy still couldn’t look up, her anxiety building steadily. ”It barely sounded like him…” She felt her eyes well up again. ”Maybe I was too young to really know him.”

▲ The only conclusion Mina could ever come to about the turning of Sarah was that it was his revenge for their parents leaving his pack. Which is what she had assumed to be the case for Dakoda as well. With the new information about their brother though, it would have made more sense if Fenrir had killed Sarah or Callisto, instead of turning the two. Or maybe he had intended to and failed. Whatever the case, she really didn't care about it at this point. Dakoda was still dead, Sarah was still a werewolf, and the waves of Fenrir's evil deeds were still crashing into all of them decades later. Being fraught over it felt sort of pointless, even with the new revelation. Mina didn't know what else to say in the moment though, and simply shrugged at her sister. Finding Fenrir and forcing him to tell before killing him would be the only way to figure it all out. Assuming he cared enough to remember. Getting back to her apartment was a weight off her shoulders. No stressed out Callisto or pissed off parents. Just her and Evy. The absence of the dog was slightly unnerving, but there had been times where Titania stayed at the house for several days because she didn't want to leave the pack. All that meant was they could utilize all of the furniture without forcing the dog to move. "A few of them, sure." They weren't exactly quiet about who they were related to, and she had reached out once or twice to a few of them. Evy already looked like she wasn't able to hold it back any longer and Mina took the spot next to her in the couch, leaving enough space that she wasn't smothering her sister, but close enough to be felt. "Maybe. Maybe not," Mina stated carefully. She wasn't sure if she even knew what Sarah had said. Everything was always questionable with her, even if she was telling the truth. "But everyone has parts of them that they don't show others. I think the way he was around us was genuine, and I've never doubted that." Merlin, where was this philosophical shit coming from? Was it the potion Rue gave her earlier in the week only just now taking effect? MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Wish I could explain it better I wish it wasn't true Evelyn wondered if Fenrir knew. As far as she knew, he was nowhere to be found, or at least he hadn’t done anything to end up in the paper. Why did she care? She didn’t. It was probably better that he not know. Who knew what a psychopath like Fenrir Greyback would do if any of his biological children were harmed? If he cared anyway. She also thought of Ophelia…Fenrir technically as a grandfather—the thought made her stomach turn uncomfortably. As much as she did not want to think about these things, her brain would not stop. It repeated the same few thoughts and replayed those few minutes at the house repeatedly.
There seemed to be a Greyback around every corner. Fenrir had gotten around. And with this new allegation about Dakoda, Evy wondered how many more were out who didn’t have a clue. She didn’t move or flinch when Mina sat next to her. They were the two youngest, and perhaps because of that, they clung to that family foundation the most. One might not think it since they didn’t sit at home all day, but it was important for them. Shaking her head, Evy didn’t speak right away. Parts of them they don’t show others. That felt like an understatement, and Evy chewed a little bit on the inside of her lip.
”She said—“ Evy didn’t have the energy to keep this to herself anymore. Not with all that had happened. ”Sarah said she had to defend herself. Which doesn’t sound like him at all.” Outside of normal roughhousing children did, Evy never recalled Dakoda even throwing something in frustration. In fact, as the oldest and biggest out of all of them, he was more likely pulling two of the girls apart when tempers flared, and hair was pulled. But, he was half Greyback apparently—who knew what had been passed down. Part of her wanted to believe Sarah, and the other part was firmly in denial. She shook her head lightly as if to shake the thoughts away or any thoughts of how her brother had died. ”I’ve never seen Callisto like that.” Wide-eyed and pale, eyes frozen on the front door. ”Speechless.” Merlin knew her sister had an opinion on how all of them did anything.

▲ The spine-tingling chill she got when Evy repeated Sarah's 'defense' was beyond unnerving. It made her instantly feel sick. No reason was better than this one. Who in Merlin's raggedy beard would ever believe that? Anyone that knew Dakoda would be able to argue against that, and she was almost momentarily furious that Evy actually believed it. But this wasn't about her younger sister, and Sarah could be extremely persuasive when she wanted to be. That was why Mina had always kept her away at arm's length, because she knew that slipping into line would end with bad results. And anyways, there were dozens of ways to defend yourself without killing your own brother. She may not have paid the most attention in class, but even she could cast a handful of spells that restrained or safely stopped an attacker. Sarah was so full of shit. Mina kept her mouth shut though, but she knew her disagreement was showing on her face. How couldn't it? Sarah had never once done a good thing in her life. She couldn't even take care of her own child properly most of the time. All of it started when she was expelled from Hogwarts and it only went downhill from there. If there was a guidebook on how to be a horrible person in every aspect of life, Sarah would be on the cover of it. All of this was so incredibly infuriating. "I haven't either." Callisto was beyond shaken by the whole thing. To be so serious one moment and then forced to realize everything she thought was true actually wasn't...maybe that was where Mina was actually lucky. Taking things in stride was sort of her thing though she often wondered if that was good at times like this. She debated whether the next thing she was going to say was necessary now of all times, but went ahead with it anyways. Especially if they were laying everything out about Sarah. "I don't trust Sarah," she said slowly. "I haven't for years. Even before Dakoda. I only bother with her because Seb deserves to have a family that loves him and it's not right to take out how I feel about her on him." If not for her nephew, she would have written her sister off years ago. There really wasn't a point to keeping someone so volatile in her life. They all had their days, but Sarah had absolutely glowing reviews in the uncontrollable department. Mina really didn't want to be around that. Wish I could explain it better I wish it wasn't true Mina didn’t respond right away, not that she had to. Evy knew her well enough to feel the disagreement radiate off her. Not that Evy could blame her. Who wanted to believe the ones they loved had a dark side? It wasn’t that she believed Sarah, but she didn’t not believe her either. Was this an advantage of being an only child? No siblings to lie to you? Or questioning your reality because of them. The question remained—if Sarah was lying, why? Silence floated between them. Evy was in the fog of her thoughts, only being brought back when her sister spoke.
’I don’t trust Sarah.’ Evy’s light eyes slowly moved to Mina. It wasn’t a secret that Sarah and Mina were not the closest. And then she brought up Sebastian, their nephew. A sweet and outgoing little boy who Evy adored. And then Mina got to what Evy assumed was the point. A pressure rose within her, and she looked away. Not quite anger, not quite sadness. Frustration. The lack of sleep didn’t help, nor did suddenly remembering that she’d hardly eaten dinner. ”I know he wouldn’t.” Evy muttered indignantly.
It was still unresolvable, like some complicated arithmancy problem. ”Sarah’s never hidden things from me like you, Callisto, and mum do.” Evy had the urge to curl up into the couch, which she sort of did, mostly for comfort but also to resist the urge to throw something across the room. Her first thought was, ‘I want to go home’. But that wasn't a good option unless she wanted to deal with their mother. Speaking of—Evy scoffed lightly, using all her willpower to stop her eyes from welling up. ”You all don’t even have to deal with her that much.” It wasn’t a secret Dakoda’s death had broken something in their mother. Nobody was surprised. But Evy was the one stuck at home on breaks. Evy had seen a bottle thrown maybe once or twice, missing their father’s head by a yard. But the drunken ramblings were hard to ignore. Evy wondered if she should start drinking wine; after all, she went to school in France. It would numb how this all made her feel.

▲ Hiding things? What the fuck did that mean? If deciding Evy wasn't old enough to properly process emotions without the right precautions in place was 'hiding things' from her, then so be it. There was so much that even Mina felt left out of, because they purposely omitted telling her. Being a blabbermouth with her lifestyle meant a lot was kept from her too. Mina let it go though. It wasn't worth waging a war over something like that when it could easily be not telling her one of the dogs was sick once during her first year. There were only a few bad actors in their family, and they were currently undergoing their werewolf transformation. Even Callisto was absolved from most of that, because she ultimately meant well in her weird, controlling way. Mina sat all the way up on the couch, staring down at Evy. She could tell that she was starting to lose her composure slightly, her voice wavering as she spoke. "I don't deal with her because she scares the hell out of me, Evy. Every time I'm forced to be in the same room with her, I'm afraid she's going to decide I'm not worth it anymore and do something about it. You never saw what she did to that kid in school. It's not normal for someone to be like that." The two of them could trauma bond all day if they really wanted to, bouncing off each other about who had it worse when it came to their eldest sister and their mum. But she refused to ever 'deal' with Sarah the normal way again. That ship had sailed years ago, and the Dakoda incident was just the extra nails in the coffin. Whoever she had imperius'd to get to where she was now, Mina really did not want to know. Sarah was dangerous. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Wish I could explain it better I wish it wasn't true And that was the thing with siblings. Evy and Mina were the two youngest despite the age gap. Really Mina was closer in age to Callisto, Sarah, and Dakoda than Evy, but their time together increased as the older kids went to school. So Evy could tell when she was being absolutely serious, especially since it wasn’t all that often that she was. As her older sister spoke, Evy just looked back at her. Grey eyes searched through blue ones for the lie, but clearly, there wasn’t one. Not that she could argue. The incident with the student was well known. Well, of course, Evy had found out much later than everyone else. That made sense, considering she’d been only eight when it happened.
Evy wanted to argue and protest because she didn’t feel that way around Sarah. Not that anything was some picture-perfect sibling scene in some movie, but maybe that’s where it was hard for her to reconcile. Those…incidents were facts, not some rumor or gossip, and yet Evy never felt Sarah would harm her. It would all have been so much easier if her brother was still alive, even with what her mother had screamed at her father about Fenrir Greyback. Evy looked away, her throat still tight. She was exhausted and could feel her brain begin to numb. Clearing her throat after a long pause, Evy finally spoke. ”It's late. We should…get some sleep.”
