'cause i sure can't get no sleep and lord knows there's no relief It didn’t take long for a message to arrive for Diana. The Wizarding World still divided its communications between the electronic and the classic. Somehow, this missive was much more threatening on parchment than on a screen. It didn’t help that Ondina’s smug and insincere voice read the invitation in the letter. Diana had been dreading this, of course. Her sisters had noted that something was off, but Diana could say she was still spooked by the fire and everything with Elaine. Cara and Penelope knew most of the truth but would not know about this deal with Ondina. As far as anyone knew, Diana was simply answering an invitation for tea.
Who would even bear witness? Diana wondered as she walked up to the front door. She assumed this was where Ondina lived with her husband, Renard. The Prophet had reported on them a few months earlier. She vaguely remembered Renard, who had been a few years ahead of her and Cara in school. In terms of a perfect match, Diana really didn’t know what a ‘good match’ looked like for a girl like Ondina. Perhaps some perfectly obedient Inferius, but better looking, of course. She waited patiently for the door to open. What did Renard even know about all this, if anything? As curious as Diana was about the pair, she thought perhaps she didn’t want to know. Learning things that weren’t her business is what got her into this mess in the first place, wasn’t it?

THERE HAD BEEN NO TIME FOR ONDINA TO consider the consequences of her actions. The ploy had come to her, thick and desperate, and she had sprinted with it as best she could. Leaving Diana to sweat, with the impression that Ondina was completely under control. She wasn't, she was spiraling. Her hands shaking as she downed potion after potion to steady her soupy lungs. Heart hammering, and pupils blown. She'd cornered Renard with the news, much like a death sentence. Informing him without preamble that her name could potentially come up as a coconspirator of Elaine Dupree. That if it did, said name would be mud. Leaning on Renard's desire for a quiet existence and a speedy divorce with pockets full of money. Desperately reminding him that she could help him fulfil neither if her name was stripped clean and his along with it. His part was simple, to witness an Unbreakable Vow between herself and Diana.
"Look," She turned to Renard before Diana's arrival. "I know that you will use this to make me miserable." Ondina was very pale, paler than usual as she faced her stoic husband. "I am handing you the keys to my freedom if you do this." Her eyes were wide, pupils warped by enhanced potions she took to steady her poor health. A gift from Elaine, funnily enough. "Diana is innocent, but weak." Ondina's face screwed with disgust. "She is the only person who could name me that is still alive." Drawing in a sobering breath, Ondina pretended like Renard might do this because he loved her, not because it amused him. "If she is to stay that way..." Ondina informed him, a warning thick in her tone. "I need her to make this Vow." As if on cue, the doorbell chimed.
Ondina was already very delicately rolling up the sleeve of her black shirt. Revealing an expanse of thin, spindly veins on a milk white arm. Her heels clacked noisily across the wooden floor, the room sucked clean of anything pure and honest. There was a haze of tension that filled every room Ondina entered in such a sharp mood. She considered all of the ways Renard could betray her before the Vow was made. She also decided it was worth the risk. Opening the door with flourish, she gave Diana a sharks grin from the entryway.
"Diana!" She exclaimed, her tone shifting from the harsh rasp she had used with Renard. Instead, she was filled with a saccharine cheer. "Pleasure to have you," She nodded once, stepping to one side to allow Diana entry to the very decadent flat that happened to be Renard's pitiful pride and joy. "Do come in." She swept her bare arm dramatically, an invitation and a promise all at once. This was a terrible, awful idea. But, what choice did a desperate woman have that didn't involve death? Ondina hadn't an answer she liked at all.

▲ If he didn't already have stomach ulcers from being married to Ondina for the past month, then this series of events was definitely going to guarantee him with a number of St. Mungo's visits in the future. Renard wasn't stupid. He had always known that Ondina had her hands in places that weren't exactly...legal. No one could be taking that many potions for their health and not have a few vices here or there. If he were to be completely honest, he had assumed she was dealing some of her potions on the black market. A relatively innocent act compared to the bomb she actually dropped on him. The implications of the recent events and what she told him meant she could go away for a long, long time. And considering who his family was what they had done in the past, being able to escape this unscathed was very, very slim. Going under veritaserum could only convince so many. He felt sick that he was falling into line for his wife's shit. Assisting with an Unbreakable Vow...what was he now, some kind of mobster? Renard dealt with aggressive magical creatures, not this. Though the line between the latter and Ondina had been blurring quite a bit as of late. "Oh fuck off," he finally said after a long silence. She wasn't wrong, he was only doing this because of the ammunition it would give him going forward. A power that he hadn't had yet. "Once this is taken care of, I don't want to hear about it again. Ever." He was already sick of her stupid little game she had gotten herself wrapped up in. How much of it was truth was hard to tell. From what he gathered, this whole ordeal had a varying level of crime, where some had done much more than the little grunts like Ondina and Diana Bainbridge. And now he was right there along with them. As if half the wizarding world didn't have dirty little secrets like this. He knew for a fact that there were those still in government that had questionable histories during the last war. Everyone always forgot, and that was why these things kept repeating themselves. The doorbell ringing broke their little conversation, and Renard watched his wife scamper off to answer the door. He couldn't see Diana from where he was, but the fake voice that came out of Ondina as she greeted the girl made him want to vomit. Why was he going through with this again? If he and Diana wanted to end it, they could right here, right now. Especially if she was supposedly innocent in all of this. If he had been more calculating, he would have contacted her earlier and tried to figure out a way to avoid the Vow completely. It was too late for that now. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

'cause i sure can't get no sleep and lord knows there's no relief Ondina immediately greeted Diana as the door opened. If one didn’t know any better, one might mistake the pitch in Ondina’s voice for graciousness. She cleared her throat before managing a mumble. ”Ondina.” Diana tried to remain as stoic as possible, albeit with the usual measure of awkwardness. She was never as strong-willed as Cara, her twin. Thinking of that always made her stomach flip. She thought of how her personal failures were due to her own weakness. Diana walked past Ondina into the house. It wasn’t what she expected. But Diana supposed she didn’t know what type of home someone like Ondina kept. Her heart hammered in her chest as their bodies passed way too close to one another for that moment.
After looking around, Diana noted a man standing nearby. Renard. Her eyes grew wide for a moment as the guilt, shame, and fear hit her all at once. The thought of another person knowing what she could have been involved with made Diana feel sick. Not that he looked pleased at all. It was like he was determined not to show any emotion. ”Can we…can we just get this over with?” Diana’s skin felt hot with anxiety. She didn’t want to be here any longer than she needed, and despite finding the strength for such a direct statement, her tone was anything but.
Escaping one Vow only to walk right into another one. This wasn’t what freedom was supposed to look like. And Ondina knew far more about Diana and her family than Elaine ever could have. Closing the gap between herself and Renard, Diana cleared her throat again. It was a struggle to look at him directly. ”Um—you must be Renard.” Merlin knew nothing helped, especially when her hair did nothing to help Diana hide her insecurity.

WITH AN EXAGGERATED ROLL OF HER EYES Ondina flapped her clammy hands in Renard's direction. He could kick, squeal and throw his insults all he wished. As long as Renard witnessed the Vow, he could do simply as he pleased. That, she supposed, was the beauty of their arrangement. Neither were particularly impressed with the other, he had no inflated impression of her morality, and she thought very little of his own at all. This was a surprise, of course, but it wasn't a horrific shock.
"Yes, whatever you want, lover!" She hissed with a sharp little quirk of her mouth. Ondina couldn't manage any more than this, as she was still feeling horribly unsteady. She straightened her shirt and drew in a deep, steadying breath - it didn't work. So much hinged on this going as she had planned it, but the variables of two flighty individuals left Ondina feeling off-kilter. If only people were puppets that she could pull and move on a whim. Instead, they had things like 'free will' and 'consciences' that they seemed terribly concerned in maintaining.
Ondina ushered Diana inside and slammed the door, a wordless piece of magic setting each lock into place snugly as she led Diana through the hallway and into the living room. She seemed to freeze in the doorway, and Ondina gave her a quick and inspecting look only to find her staring widely at where Renard stood near the fireplace. "Oh, stop looking so spooked!" She gave an almost hysterical little laugh. "He's getting his fair share in this deal, don't lose any sleep over it." She waved him off, as if the mere idea of colluding with another stranger was nothing but chump change.
Shaking out great tresses of static red curls, Ondina moved into the centre of the room and finished carefully rolling up her sleeve. "Couldn't have said it better myself," She grinned at Diana and held out her hand, her nails looking almost dangerously sharp and glittering a deep, manicured red. Her face was pale, though, and there were great dark circles underneath both eyes that could be detected at close inspection. Ondina knew that her entire, comfortable existence hedged on the Vow, but she maintained her slither of control with just the barest strength.
"Lets not waste our time on pointless introductions." Ondina told Diana with a huff of breath. "Renard, this is Diana, fellow co-conspirator and deeply morally wounded girl." She gave a tut that lacked any sympathy and jerked her chin back from Diana to Renard. "Diana, this is my doting husband and roommate Renard, blah blah blah." She bobbed her head erratically and blew a mean little raspberry. "Let's hold hands now, dear." She wiggled her fingers.

▲ There was a smug look on his face as Diana Bainbridge entered and seemingly felt the same about getting all of this nonsense over with. Not that it would ever mean anything to Ondina. She brushed these sentiments to the side because they never operated under her conditions. Everything came back to her wants and needs, after all. This was only happening because of her too. Renard hated being dragged into this. All because he felt the pressure from his parents to marry. He picked a winner too. If only he had spent the time to work on his personality a little better…he probably could have found a nice, normal girl. Instead, he found the obscenest of the Weasley family. ”I’d say it’s a pleasure, but it really is not,” he said to Diana, but rolled his eyes at his wife. Under any other circumstance, he wouldn’t have cared about their meeting. The more he thought about it though, the more he realized that this was the perfect opportunity to be rid of Ondina forever. If she blew up her end of the Vow, she was dead. Problem solved. Of course that would bring in more questions from the Ministry than he would want to answer, but convincing those idiots that he performed it for these two out of duress would be easy enough to do. ’They were acting in accordance with Elaine, and he felt he had no choice because who knew how dangerous they were’. He was clean though, aside from this little bit. All of his money was squared away and untouched by Purifier hands. Accidentally marrying one wasn’t a crime as far as he could tell. ”Look, we finally agree on something,” Renard said flatly about wasting time. He got his wand out and waited for the two of them to join hands. This was going to be the first and last time he did this. ”Keep it clean,” he added sharply to Ondina, knowing she’d love to throw extras in on top of what had to be done. 'cause i sure can't get no sleep and lord knows there's no relief Diana flinched a little when Ondina laughed. Was she not concerned that Renard—her husband would know? In any case, the trio seemed to be on the same page. Nobody would enjoy this event or arrangement, and it was simply best to get it over with. Though the man was hardly sympathetic toward Diana, even less though toward Ondina. She wondered, to herself, what sort of marriage was this—hardly the storybook romance described in the Prophet earlier that year.
Even prior to knocking on the door, Diana’s hair had darkened somewhere between black and dark brown. Looking in the mirror that morning, Diana was reminded of her time with Elaine. Closing herself off to the world hard helped keep her emotions in check if only by not having any, and the dark circles staring back felt like a glimpse in the past. Ondina stuck out her hand; it was as pale as her face against blood-red nails. Diana wondered how sharp they were, but Ondina was hardly one for physical violence, far preferring verbal cruelty. The only Weasley trait Diana had ever noted was the red hair.
Renard pulled out his wand. In the back of Diana’s mind, she wondered how the hell she ended up here again with another bloody Vow. Defeated, she stuck her hand out and grasped the inside of Ondina’s wrist. Was it wrong to feel like a veteran in these circumstances? ”Go on.” She spoke to Renard, though she kept her eyes on Ondina.
