He tried so hard to argue. From complaining to harry, talking with Victoire, and even having his position as auror threatened by Claire. But no matter what he did, or how hard he tried, they all told him that he needed to go to the ball. For posterity and to make sure the ministry was able to help Hogwarts keep an eye on things. Harry even joked with him about it, saying he could meet a nice girl there. That caused David to not only grown and roll his eyes, but get a laugh out of his friend in the process.
So there he was, standing in the corner of the great hall, watching as both students and faculty danced around the ballroom. While some danced, others drank and chatted around the snack table. David felt like he did the last time he was at a Hogwarts dance. He begged and begged his parents not to make him go, but instead of granting his wish, then sent him dress robes. He tried to do the same thing when his sister had found out this time, hoping she'd help him find a way out. Like coming up with a family emergency, or needing help with her animals. Instead, like his parents, she sent him a box with a freshly pressed dress robe. This one followed by a note that simply stated "Try to find a cute girl there".
Just the thought of that made David give a groan. Though it was winter, and the hall was kept at a decent temperature, David felt uncomfortable in his dressrobe. He reached up and touched his face, making sure that he was clean shaven, ran his fingers through his hair, and tugged uncomfortably at his collar. He continued to keep an eye out over the hall, making sure that everyone was having fun and not running in terror or causing a scene.

Rachel had been at the Ball for a few hours now; she had helped set up and then pretty much walked around, speaking with her coworkers and come others from the Ministry that she hadn't seen in awhile, as well as her prior Professors that she had. Rachel was just trying to keep her cool and talk to as many people as she could without standing and looking like she was bored and alone.
Speaking of, as she turned to look for someone, her eyes glanced over David Samson, an Auror in her department. Smiling, Rachel realized she hadn't spoken to him yet and walked over to him, her long dress trailing behind her. "Hello David, enjoying your night?" Rachel rose an eyebrow, keeping the mood light as she took a sip of her wine. Her mind immediately went back to her conversation with Eleanor, trying to tell her to dance with someone. She could dance with David, but he didn't look like he wanted to move from the corner.

David was trying to find something to do, where he wouldn't look like a statue, when Rachel came up and said hello. He turned and looked to her, knowing her from the ministry. He didn't really meet her, but now she stood in front of him, and he had to admit, she looked beautiful. He stood off of the wall and faced her, looking her over as he did. He suddenly began to feel a little nervous, trying to not make it look like he was making sure he looked alright. Last thing he needed was to look like he had just woken up and threw something on.
"Oh hi. Yeah, I'm having a great time." he smiled, slicking back his hair the best he could, "Actually, I'm a little uncomfortable here. I've never been one for dances because, well, I don't know how to dance."
He felt a little embarrassed when he said that he didn't know how to dance. Even when he was young and going through his Hogwarts years, all the dances he went to, he just stood by the snack table. He never learned how to dance, and he could never ask his parents, because they were always too busy to teach him. And his sister always told him it was weird dancing with her brother. But now, as much as he would like to stand by the snack table once more, the table was at the other end of the hall, with a whole floor of dancing witches and wizards between them.
"How about you?"

@optimus <3 Rachel smiled knowingly as David stood up off the wall to face her more. She didn't mind that he was just standing there, of course. Not everyone enjoyed dances, or Balls, and the fact that this was a very important time for everyone to come together, he may feel uncomfortable that he might not have a date or know how to dance. Not that Rachel was any different; she could dance, yes, but she came here alone like many other people.
As David tried to slick back his hair she walked a little closer and smiled. "Well you haven't got to be uncomfortable, David. Tons of people don't know how to dance; this night is about enjoying yourself and having fun." Rachel didn't want him to feel uncomfortable, or to not enjoy his night. She took a sip of her Sangria and motioned to the dance floor. "I'm having a good night so far, although it did just start. Would you like to dance with me?" Rachel felt like she needed to get him to get the anxiety off his chest, and she assumed having fun would be the best choice.

"Yeah. I don't mind having fun."
He smiled as she got closer to him. For some reason, he couldn't take his eyes off of her. She looked beautiful with the way her hair and her dress was. How she could be single was anyone's guess. When she asked if he wanted to dance, he wished he had a drink of his own. It was the first time he'd ever had a woman want to dance with him, at least a woman who wasn't family. When he thought about the idea of dancing, he got more nervous. He hoped that whatever dancing he could muster, would be enough to impress his soon to be dance partner.
"Sure. I wouldn't mind dancing with you." he said with a pleasant smile.

@optimus <3 David's response was exactly what Rachel wanted to hear. He still seemed a bit nervous, but his grin was a good sign. At least to her. Rachel took a large sip of her Sangria, finishing it off and setting it down on a nearby table. Rachel didn't want to embarrass him, and she was sure she wouldn't. No one was watching anyone else, and for her to teach him to have fun and dance would be exhilarating, even if he was doubtful. "Let's go then!"
Rachel nodded her head towards the dance floor and began walking, making sure David was following behind her. As soon as they had gotten to an area with a decent crowd, she turned back around to face him as a new, face paced song came on. "This one is fast, so, we haven't got to do any dance like a Waltz at all, but just jump around and have fun! Move your body to the beat of the music."

David was a little hesitant, but he didn't want to have Rachel just walking up to the dance floor and waiting for him, so he followed behind. The song was pretty slow, so he hoped that meant he didn't have to move much. Unfortunately, it was right when he got to the dance floor was when the slow song stopped. A faster paced song began to play, as students began to jump around and move about the dancefloor. Rachel told him to basically do the same thing, and that just made him even more nervous.
"Oh...ok. I'll try." He said, scratching his head as he spoke.
He tried to move his feet, which was the easy part, then came his legs and then his arms. He tried to do his best to dance and jump around like Rachel suggested, and he hoped that meant he was doing exactly what she was hoping he would. He had to admit, dancing was fun. A person could let their whole body move and just cut loose, and nobody would say anything because they were pretty much doing the same thing.

@optimus <3 They began to dance, and Rachel rose an eyebrow as David stuttered out that he'd try to dance. They both began to jump around and dance along with the music. Rachel was glad her hair was up, because she was beginning to sweat. David started out slow, and got slightly better, but not good enough for Rachel. Laughing, she grabbed his hands. "Let loose!" She began moving their hands back and forth, her feet moving the opposite way of her feet.
After this song had ended, she let go of David's hands, wiping the sweat off of her forehead and catching her breath. "I'm thirsty, let's go get a drink, David." It was quiet for a few moments, her ears feeling clogged from how loud the music was. She smiled genuinely at her coworker and walked over to the drink table. Instead of more alcohol, Rachel grabbed a glass of water. She still needed to be professional, and the water would keep her sane. "Are you having more fun now?"

The more they danced, the more nervous he felt. She started laughing, and before he could stop, she grabbed his hands and told him to cut loose. He looked to her and smiled, beginning to move with her. He didn't feel so weird now, holding her hands and dancing the same as she was. He actually started to laugh and have fun, which was something that he never thought he'd do at a dance. Every girl who was at the dances in the past, either avoided him or had a date, but here he was, dancing with a woman. And a woman he worked with.
"Good idea." He said, when she said they should get something to drink.
He had to admit, all the moving about and dancing had worked up a thirst in him. He followed her to the table and saw that it was lined with alcohol and other drinks for both children and adults. He had to smile at this, thinking that there wasn't any alcohol on the tables when he was in Hogwarts. But then again, when he was in Hogwarts, there wasn't a power hungry group of pureblood wizards and witches trying take over and destroy things. He grabbed a cup of punch and took a drink, smiling at Rachel when she asked if he was having fun now.
"I am, actually. Thank you."

@optimus <3 Rachel was enjoying the face that David was finally having fun. He had always seemed like the more conservative type; being quiet and stealthy, and basically just doing what is needed and then going home. But really, Rachel was the same exact way. Though she knew when she needed to take a break from work and be her regular self. Well...not too regular, which is why she was staying away from the alcohol that night. There were many important people here and she had to keep her cool.
They went to get a drink and as she sucked down her water and got another, she nodded her head at David. "Good! I'm glad. No need to thank me, I just want you to enjoy yourself, David. You are always working, you need to just relax." Rachel winked. She contemplated another drink, but she'd wait until she was eating to do that. Leaning up against the wall, she rose an eyebrow. "So how are you, David? Family well?"

"Relax? Yeah, I guess I get told that a lot." he said, giving a small laugh.
He had to admit, he was nervous. This was the most he'd ever talked to a woman outside of work in the longest time. Especially a woman that wasn't family or friend. But Rachel seemed like the type that he could talk to and get along with. Though he had to admit, she was right when she, like so many others, told him he needed to take a break. It was hard for him to settle down and take a break, though, always focusing on work and what needed to be done. And if he wasn't working, he was volunteering at the hospital or orphanage. The only time he actually decided to take a break, was when he started the biggest snowball fight Hogsmead had ever seen. Though he was still pretty bummed that it didn't make it into the paper.
"Besides worrying about ministry stuff, I'm doing well, thanks. My family's well to, my parents are hard at work, and I'm not sure what my sister's up to. I should probably get in touch with her soon." he said, grabbing a drink and taking a sip, "What about you? I haven't seen you in some time."

@optimus <3 Rachel definitely didn't want him to feel nervous! She was quite a different type of boss that one would usually experience in their life time. Rachel tended to be as understanding and sweet as possible with her employees and colleagues. And there were times where she would even go out with them and enjoy it! Currently she was single, had been for quite some time but she had had some nights here and there with men; some she had just met, or some she had known for a long time. Rachel, at the Ministry, was incredibly professional. Out of the Ministry, she was just Rachel.
"Well that's fantastic! My dad's doing well, I visit him often, as much as I can actually." He lived not too far from her, and ever since her mother had been murdered six years prior, Rachel tries to get to his house at least once a day, usually to either take him out for errands or cook him a nice dinner. She knew he appreciated it, but she just wanted him to feel happy. "And I, of course, have been pretty busy since Hermione got her promotion, but now that Harry is the Head, the work has pretty much cut itself in half for me."

"I don't remember you mentioning much about your father. What does he do?"
He had heard about Rachel's mother, and each day he did his best to be there for her. She seemed to have gotten over it, somewhat, but he knew that it takes more than just a few years to get over the death of a loved one. Especially family. The music continued to play as he took another drink, feeling a little more at ease now that he was just standing there talking to her. She made him feel comfortable, which was a good thing, since he got nervous easily around women. David's luck with women was never good. It was mainly friends and family, so it's not like he didn't have experience with them.
"Yeah, Harry's a pretty good guy. I enjoy working with him."

@optimus <3 David asked about her father, and she smiled to herself and put the glass of water down. "He's...an actor. But as of late, unfortunately, he hasn't been doing many movies. I think he's contemplating retiring if I'm being honest." Rachel didn't have an issue with that, her father made plenty of money, and with her grandfather's legacy, her father was doing perfectly well with the money coming in from the great Elvis Presley.
"Well I'm glad you enjoy working with him. I do as well. He's a great help to this Department and we're all glad to have him." Rachel smiled genuinely, drinking the last of her water. "So the only reason you've never been to a dance before is because you can't dance? No girl has ever asked you?" Her eyebrows rose, smiling widely.

"An actor? That's cool." he said with a smile, "Is he stage or movie acting?"
David always had a fascination with acting. It was one of his many fascinations, actually. When he was little, he always got involved in school plays, before Hogwarts got a hold of him, and he started focusing on becoming a great wizard instead. His parents still ask him, from time to time, if he's ever going to be in any more plays around town. Too be honest, as much as he wanted to, with what's going on with the ministry and the purifiers, it was hard for him to take time to do anything, since he was lacking in actual free time. When she asked him about never being to a dance, he looked down, his cheeks turning a little red from embarrassment.
"Well...no, actually. Every dance I've been to, I mainly stayed by the snack tables. The closest thing I've gotten to dancing with a woman was at family functions."
