During the average weekday, Sophie didn't have much time for herself. It was sometimes easier that way, if she kept herself completely busy and unable to think about anything but who needed what done where and when. The one thing that interrupted that workflow, however, was when she was able to take her lunch break.
When she could, she spent it with her father in his office. It might have looked strange to some people, since she was grown, but she was living at home and arrived and left work alongside her father, anyway. He had a meeting that he needed to attend, though, which left her to her own devices.
It wasn't that she was incapable of functioning on her own; she didn't need Daddy to hold her hand and guide her as though she weren't nineteen, but the security that staying around him brought her was comforting. There wouldn't be any surprises, which weren't guaranteed as soon as she left the Atrium.
She considered her options: Muggle London, where she could probably grab a salad but would look terribly strange walking down into a public toilet with a bag of food; Diagon Alley, or Hogsmeade. With not too much time to spare, however, there was the café stand, Ministry Munchies, in the Atrium itself. (Normally, she got her breakfast there, but it wouldn't kill her to go twice in one day.)
Joining the queue, which extended far enough as it was, Sophie began to wait. Her choices looked like they might have been between a cheese Danish or a lukewarm sausage roll, at this rate, but she would take what she could get. Checking her watch out of habit, she glanced at the line of her fellow Ministry workers before her. How, she thought, could people do that for their entire careers?

@sophie Mina had been hoping to have lunch with her sister during their respective breaks, but it seemed like someone was a little too bust today. She could have said that like, that morning or something. Instead, Callisto didn’t even bring it up until Mina was practically knocking down her office door. It wasn’t that hard to send an owl, and she always enjoyed getting them when work days were slow. Which was how today was going, just like yesterday, and exactly the same as the day before that. Some things never changed. That’s why she could get away with locking up the shop for an hour during lunchtime and finding good places to spend her lunch break. Diagon Alley got old fast, so London was usually where she went. If it was a busy day, it was a quick run out to grab food to go, and back she went to her little chair behind the cash register, forced to eat only when customers weren’t wandering around the shop. Those were her boss’s rules, not hers. If she had it her way, she’d be munching on snacks all day.
But now she was hung out to dry. Callisto was too busy or something, which shouldn’t have surprised her in the slightest, and she didn’t have enough time to run out of the Ministry building, into London to find something, eat, and make it back in time to reopen the shop. That meant she was now stuck with whatever the Ministry had to offer, and from what she had heard, it wasn’t all that great. But food was food, and she was only halfway done with work for the day, so anything in her stomach at this point was better than nothing.
Mina had spent a long time seething on the other side of Callisto’s door, so eventually she was asked to leave because her guest pass was up or something silly like that. Her sister probably called down to security to have her removed as quickly as possible to avoid a scene. Not wanting to put up a fight, Mina made her way back to the lobby to see what food choices there were. There was a huge line for some food stand of sorts, so she hopped in at the end of it. This was better than nothing. The girl, or woman (she couldn’t tell by looking at the back of their head), that was in front of her kept checking her watch. “Worried you’ll run out of time?” Mina piped up. “I still have to run back to Diagon Alley after this,” she added, with a dramatic roll of her eyes, even though the woman hadn’t turned around yet to see it.

“Worried you’ll run out of time? I still have to run back to Diagon Alley after this.”
Sophie heard a voice behind her and, realizing that she was the one being addressed, turned her head. The girl who had spoken to her couldn't have been much older than she was, and she was certain that she recognized her from school. She wasn't dressed as though she had come to the Ministry for work, which surprised Sophie that she had bothered to join the queue.
Whatever had brought her there, since she said that she still needed to return to Diagon Alley, she didn't sound thrilled with the wait in the slightest. Sophie understood, though she remained outwardly pleasant about it as she turned her whole body instead of having to look over her shoulder. “I don't think I've ever seen the queue this long,” she remarked, being completely honest.

@sophie This line was ridiculous. The Ministry was ridiculous. Everything was ridiculous. That was what Mina ran through her head over and over again as she stood in the line. If only Callisto hadn’t been so flaky, blowing her off again as usual. The line wouldn’t even have been a question, since she wouldn’t have been standing in it to begin with. At least there was a person that could occupy her talkativeness for the length of it. Merlin knew there would barely be any customers at the store again, so she had to let it all out somewhere. “Hurry up!” Mina yelled rather loudly at the people in the front, as the woman in front of her was starting to turn around to acknowledge her earlier comment. It didn’t really help that she had skipped breakfast that morning either, supplementing it with some awful coffee from a nearby café in Diagon Alley. At least she wasn’t hungover.
“Wouldn’t know, since I don’t work here,” Mina responded, standing up on her toes to be able to get a better view of how fast the line was going. From what she could tell, there was only one employee. She could be sympathetic to that poor soul. She had been there before. “Though I have seen long lines before. Over at Flourish & Blotts,” she followed up on, mostly hoping the idle chit-chat would hopefully make things go a little faster.
Planting her feet back on the ground firmly, she finally faced the person she had been talking to. The girl looked familiar, but everyone did these days. That was the drawback to working in a magical bookstore. Everyone shopped there at some point or another, and it was a pain trying to remember all of their names. “Do I know you? You look familiar,” she pointed out, rather bluntly. There was no reason to beat around the bush.

Yelling at anyone to “hurry up” only worked if the person who was doing the yelling was in a superior position to the one at whom the yelling had been directed. Sophie understood the frustrations of the young woman who stood behind her, even if she was quieter about her impatience. Making a fuss over some food that had been sitting in a display case for hours probably wasn't going to accomplish much; at least, it wasn't going to accomplish anything positive. Assuming that the rest of the queue was staring in their direction, Sophie kept her focus on the impatient brunette.
“Wouldn’t know, since I don’t work here.” Sophie had to wonder if the young woman had ever stood in a queue before, either, which was answered when the brunette mentioned Flourish and Blotts. Still, she stood on tiptoe, not really looking at her as she spoke.
Sophie, being polite, didn't call attention to it. Once the brunette was satisfied with whatever she had seen—or, possibly, she had just given up—she did look her in the eyes. “Do I know you? You look familiar.”
Thinking for a moment, Sophie tried to place her. They must have been in school together for a few years, at least; the brunette couldn't have been that much older. “Sophie Finch-Fletchley,” Sophie replied, reintroducing herself and hoping that the young woman would supply her name. “I was in Hufflepuff.”

@sophie Mina refrained from making any rude gestures or comments at the Ministry workers who turned around to take a look at the person yelling for them to hurry up. She practically had to bite down on her tongue though, because some of those ugly mugs really made her want to punch them in the face. Their condescending attitudes towards people like her, the worker bees that supplied them with their way of life, happened all too often. She was forced to ignore it and play nice while at work, and it had almost gotten the better of her right now. Unfortunately she knew that the wizarding community in London was small enough that she would encounter some of these people once again, and that would reflect poorly on herself and the store. She kind of liked her job and it kept her sister from hounding her constantly to find something to do with her life. Anything to keep Callisto at bay for another month or two. The older Wulfe had been rather quiet about Mina’s life choices as of late, and she kind of liked that a little.
“Aww a Hufflepuff!” Mina chimed. “You look like one. My brother and best friend both were, so I have a knack for telling a badger when I see one.” That was a lie. Imogen was far from being a Hufflepuff at times, and Mina had always wondered why her friend hadn’t been in Ravenclaw. Super strong work ethic and intelligence. Everything that Mina was not. That was exactly why they were friends. They completed each other. “Nice to meet you Sophie. I’m Mina.” She wasn’t sure why she omitted her last name, but figured they’d probably never see each other again after this, so that didn’t really matter all too much. “I was in Slytherin. Don’t worry though. I only bite if I’m really hungry or if the other party is into that kind of thing.” She felt her stomach rumble slightly. “And right now I’m starting to get to that hungry tipping point, so maybe you should be worried?” Mina stated as she glanced at the front of the line. It had moved maybe an inch so far.

“Awww,” the young woman cooed, and Sophie tried not to cringe. “A Hufflepuff!” She wasn't sure where the condescension ended or the admiration started, but it was strange to have anyone who wasn't at least seventy or eighty years old react in that way to learning of her now-former Hogwarts House.
“You look like one.”
Was that supposed to have been a compliment? Sophie didn't know and opened her mouth to say a quick—if not perplexed—word of thanks. What did a Hufflepuff look like, anyway?
“My brother and best friend both were, so I have a knack for telling a badger when I see one.” That was a relief. At least this other girl had a good rapport with Hufflepuffs—not that any two members of a given House were the same, a misconception that got Hufflepuffs a reputation for being lazy or outcasts.
Finally, Sophie was able to put a name to the face, when she received an introduction. Mina. Sophie was sure that she had heard that name before, though certainly not in some time. When Mina added that she had been in Slytherin, Sophie thought that that might have explained it. Their Common Rooms hadn't been very far from one another—relatively speaking—and Mina seemed like the type to have been in detention a few times in her years at Hogwarts (not that Sophie could say the same for herself).
“Don’t worry, though,” Mina assured her. “I only bite if I’m really hungry or if the other party is into that kind of thing.”
Sophie stifled a giggle. Mina's brand of humor wasn't exactly the same as her own, but at least it was something to pass the time while they waited to get lunch.
“And right now I’m starting to get to that hungry tipping point, so maybe you should be worried?”
Glancing from the end of the queue at the counter and back to Mina, Sophie laughed. She could say without a doubt that she wasn't into anything sadomasochistic, so at least she was safe in that regard. “I'm famished,” she commented, “so that makes two of us.” Whatever was taking people so long, she was hopeful that it would be cleared up before long. “I'd take just about anything at this point,” she shrugged. “I'll consider myself lucky if they've got anything better than an egg mayonnaise sandwich.”
