03.15.2025 Work for the day should have been done with already, but the old bat that came in ten minutes before closing time had to make a request for a book. A book whose title Mina had never heard of but that they apparently kept in stock according to the owner, who had promised the old bat that she could come pick it up Saturday evening. Usually when requests for old texts were made via the owner, a note was left with the location of it within the store, assuming it wasn’t already set aside in the holding room where most ordered books went. The problem today was that the owner had not set the book aside or mentioned it to Mina at all. She tried explaining this to the lady and was in return called a lazy slouch that didn’t look hard enough. A few choice words later from the lady and she said she would return at opening the next day, Sunday, and that Mina better have found it or else it was her job that was on the line.
Mina had dealt with problem customers before plenty of times and she wasn’t exactly worried about her job being taken away by the old bat’s word, but she was still nervous about it. That and she had the opening shift Sunday morning and knew that she would have to deal with the bitch regardless. Her first option was to get in super early and hope the owner was there on time so they could tag team the search for the book (assuming the owner didn’t know where it was placed). The second choice was to lock up for the night and look for as long as she reasonably could. The problem Mina had with that was that she was supposed to meet Rue to hang out, and she didn’t want to drag her friend into work related issues and miss out on whatever fun was planned for the night. Unfortunately the old bat scared Mina the closer it got to closing time and the decision was made to lock up and stick it out until she found the book. Scribbling a small note on a scrap of paper, she taped it to the window in the front door, letting Rue know to knock as loudly as possible so that she could be let in once she got there. In the meantime, Mina began her digging through the backroom where all the ordered books normally went. The text had to be around here somewhere…

THE PREVIOUS NIGHT WAS ONE Rue knew would be risky to recover from. She had decided to spend the night at the Purifier base, creating and experimenting on potions for the members as well as small samples for herself to sell in the Black Market. There was an increase of witches, warlocks and even other magical creatures who were interested in the darker side of Rue’s potions, using them the same way No-Majs (or Muggles as Mina called them, how cute) would and reporting back with positive results on what they felt was simple bliss, euphoria if you may. But with a long night ahead, Rue decided an all-night seemed fair. A few lines of dragon-scale powder, the complete edition of Nine-Three-Six and of course, a classic brain enhancer, Rue was awake for the skies. The energy hadn’t faded by the next day or even the evening, especially since the Weiss made plans with her closest friend: Mina. It was Saturday! Of course a night out in the city was needed. The two decided to meet up after Mina’s closing time, just outside of the store and as usual for their weekly outings, Rue brought a gift!
A few potions jangled in their pocket as they walked down Diagon Alley, head lolling back slightly as their body somewhat dragged them. Merlin, Rue loved potions. Flourish & Blott’s was the next building up and Rue paused the moment she got to the door, considering she didn’t see Mina waiting for her. She stepped closer, eyes narrowed as they caught sight of a note slapped across the door. The scribble of Mina’s handwriting was enough to confirm she was in fact…still inside. Stepping back, Rue lifted their hand, knocking it loudly against the door, hoping her friend would make an appearance and eventually let her in. After all, it was bloody freezing outside.

▲ Mina didn’t hear it at first. The knocking had to have been going on for at least five minutes by the time her ears actually perked up and caught it. Caught deep in the backroom amongst towering stacks of books, the muffled sound of flesh against wood from the front door had almost been lost across the span of the shop. Almost knocking over a few of the piles of books as she tried to climb her way out of the storeroom, Mina confirmed that it was indeed someone knocking on the door, and she practically bolted towards it. Rue’s face was barely visible through the pulled curtain in the window and Mina ripped the door open for her friend. “Sorry,” she apologized, knowing full well that they had been standing there for some time already. A cold nip of air blasted its way in as Mina ushered Rue in with her hand, quickly slamming the door once again and locking it. “It’s not that cold out, is it?” she asked, biting down on her lower lip in anticipation for what could very well be a cold and angry Rue. Being stuck inside all day always made her forget what the outside world had to offer, and this time of year was sort of a toss-up with the weather. “Don’t be angry with me,” Mina started to say as she started to walk back towards the backroom again, “But I can’t leave yet. This one customer will have my skin if I don’t find her ordered book by tomorrow morning at opening, and I really don’t want to start my day with being screamed at.” The last thing she needed was to be yelled at and humiliated in front of other customers and her boss. It had happened a lot when she first started at the shop, but that wasn’t really an excuse anymore. “So once I find it, we’re good to go,” Mina gave Rue a thumbs up with both hands, and then dove back into the backroom, immediately going back to where she had been prior to her friend showing up. THE KNOCKS CLEARLY DIDN’T GO unnoticed for as long as Rue expected since the small round face that belonged to the one and only Mina eventually peered through the window. Instantly the door was pulled open, and Rue was ready to barge past, needing to feel the relief of warm air to keep their high up. Cold weather and potions didn’t really mix well after all. Waving her hand at her friend’s apology, Rue brought her cold hands to her lips, blowing warm air into them. Eyes blew wide at Mina’s assumption just before the Weiss spoke. ”Not that cold out?” Rue repeated, the need to latch onto her friend’s arm growing now. ”It’s fucking freezing! Thank Merlin I couldn’t feel most of it.” As angry as she felt for being left out in the cold, being angry against Mina simply didn’t last longer than five minutes at a time. She loved her friend too much.
Rue shortly began to follow after Mina, heading further into the bookstore and Rue took it into account that she had never really…Been inside of the place. At least at a time she could remember anyway. Though she was sure the owner didn’t like her one bit. Then again, no one besides Mina and their cliental liked Rue anyway. ”I mean, I have a potion that could prevent that.” She grinned, more so teasing Mina, but it was a work in progress. It was one of those random potions Rue had created to make the said person feel nothing but elated, like the hairs on their arms were floating instead of standing straight in tension…Buuuut it was an experiment.
Mina then dove back into the backroom and Rue felt the need to follow behind again, her arms swinging by her side.”That’s fair!” She called out, firstly rocking on the balls of her feet, unsure of what to do. ”I mean, now I’m here maybe we could…butt our heads together and find the book together? Two brains are better than one…Right?”

▲ “Soooorry,” Mina repeated, yelling it over her shoulder as she made her way deeper into the back storage room. She didn’t know what Rue meant by ‘not feeling it’, but could take an educated guess on a number of potions and stimulants her friend was normally under the influence of. Or a pepper-up potion. Those did the trick too, and weren’t nearly as dangerous as drinking an entire bottle of firewhisky just to stay warm. Mina had done the latter a multitude of times when it was really cold out when she left work late at night. The nice thing about Diagon was that the liquor stores stayed open late for the Ministry workers. And if those weren’t, there were always the muggle ones to sneak through for a bottle or two. She snorted at Rue’s comment from behind a stack of books, knowing full well which potion they were talking about. That would turn the mean customer’s frown upside down in a matter of milliseconds, and Mina would definitely have the last laugh and be out of a job at the same time. “That’s up to you if you want to poison her morning pumpkin juice,” she called back. Her hands found a large, leather-bound book from the bottom of a pile, and she immediately regretted pulling it out to check the title. The stack on top of it came tumbling down, a cloud of heavy dust poofing up from around her. Mina made the mistake of inhaling at that exact moment, and her throat grew thick with the particles, causing her to wheeze incessantly. “Or at least another pair of hands will help,” she coughed out. Waving her hands in front of her face in a dire attempt to clear the haze of dust still in the air, she looked back at Rue and screwed her face up into a pout. “Why does this always happen to me when I want to have fun?” Letting out a sigh, Mina turned back to the newly formed pile of books on the ground. She was going to have to put them back in their respective stacks now too. The last thing she needed was multiple angry old people tomorrow morning when she couldn’t find their ordered books. “The book is called ‘Signs of the Moon’ apparently. It’s got a black leather cover with gold lettering,” Mina explained as she rolled her sleeves up and started to re-stack the books she had just knocked over. “Which would help if half the books in the store didn’t look exactly the same. I’ve already tried summoning it too, and that didn’t seem to work, so it’s probably charmed to not be called.” MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

MINA’S REPEATED APOLOGY WAS MET with Rue’s roll of her eyes, the voice of her friend sounding more of a faint echo the further she disappeared into that back storage room. Rue followed of course, watching as Mina’s little hands scanned through the books in search of that one specific title and soon Rue felt awkward for simply standing around. Her arms rose to fold in front of her before moving back down to her side, then one arm rose again so her hand could itch at her hair…It was safe to say having nothing to do while completely and utterly high made the Weiss entirely fidgety. ”Don’t tempt me.” She muttered — because with Mina’s word, the potioneer would do it in an instant. After all, what were friends for!
Though the sound of a pile crashing down was enough to pull Rue back into reality, eyes closing while brows furrowed and slowly one eye opened at a time. Rue watched her friend coughing — probably from inhaling dust like a typical idiot. ”Another pair of hands coming up!” She announced, rolling up her sleeves. ”I think you might be cursed.” Rue pouted as she joked. She then nodded though, concluding that finding Signs of some stupid Moon would be her first priority for tonight. ”Well, if you look in that section—“ Rue pointed to the area surrounding Mina. ”I’ll look in the one behind it.” Four eyes were better than one. It just didn’t help that Rue was high. ”Gold lettering should be easy…to find…”

▲ Mina hadn’t had a good look at her friend when she had been let into the store, but now that they were in such a small space, it was hard not to notice the condition Rue was in. Could it even be called a condition anymore? She was always in some sort of perpetual stupor or high and she functioned fairly well like that. Cal didn’t like it when she was over and like that, but Cal was also a stiff nine times out of ten. The tenth time being when she melted around her boyfriend, so that didn’t really count. Today was no different for Rue, and Mina could tell. “Are you…?” she left the question open for interpretation, curious on what the potion for today was and if it was something she had taken herself at some point in time. Rue had plenty of fun consumables, and while Mina tried to avoid them on during the work week, sometimes it was hard to say no. They were certainly cheaper than alcohol and loads more fun too. It didn’t take long after the cloud of dust settled around them for Rue to step in and assist in the search. Mina nodded her head at the plan her friend concocted - which was infinitely better than looking at each bloody book’s binding the way she had been doing it. “Old people really don’t like me for some reason. I haven’t the foggiest why that might be,” she said rather sarcastically. They really did though, and she had a feeling it was because she still came across as a recluse and definitely a wild child. The dress code was comfortable clothing, and to her that was looking like she just came out from an underground punk concert. The dusty old biddies that frequented the bookstore needed to get their wands out of their asses and learn to accept it, because she wasn’t changing a bit. If she had to take a guess, that was part of the reason for the customer’s rage earlier. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

IF THE QUESTION OF HOW often the Weiss was in the state she was ever came around in a conversation, Rue was sure her answer would simply be yes. Without her potions drugs Rue had no confidence, customers or even a will to live in most times. She was somewhat glad that Mina understood it, especially since the Oliveira herself could be somewhat compared to an alcoholic, even if she didn’t abuse the drink as often as others thought. Most times though, when baby Rue would be round at Mina’s and see her siblings…It was rather hard to hide the fact that she was high. But she always apologised for the tension in the room anyway.
At Mina’s question, Rue brought her shoulders up for a short shrug, answering Mina’s question with one of her own. ”I don’t know…Am I…?” They both knew she was. Mina knew exactly how the Weiss was. Sober or not sober at all. Stepping in to help Mina was a good choice for the potioneer, as it allowed her to feel less awkward and actually…Help her friend find something that was necessary. ”Was you mean to this one? Like the last one you were…’nice’ to?”
Rue couldn’t help but smirk then at her question, Mina tended to believe she was being nothing but subtle and nice to most customers buuuut the slip of the tongue always caught up with the Oliveira.

▲ “I-” she paused, unsure of how to answer Rue. Was this a test that she should know how to pass? The obvious answer was that Rue was under the influence. Of what, Mina wasn’t sure. It could be one of her many potions or normal muggle ones – whatever it was, Rue seemed to be functioning normally. So far. “I’ll take that as a yes then,” Mina decided for her, knowing that she had to be, or else there would have been more of an incredulous look on her friend’s face. Mina waved off Rue’s questions, because she knew that she had been superb with her customer service on this old lady. There weren’t many customers where she bent over backwards for them, but this had been one of them. Because if she didn’t, it ended up with situations like the one she was currently in. “I was like an angel, Rue. Buttered her up and everything. Maybe she’s the type that hates young people. I don’t know.” Mina was positive that it was the latter. It was all too common of a symptom for the senile; complain about the informality of their work or clothes. They seemed to all forget that they were the ones that raised her generation’s parents, so in a way it was all their fault to begin with. Turning back to the stacks of books, she saw it. The gold lettering stuck out in all the dust. “So you were hiding!” she exclaimed, climbing over one of the walls of books and pulling it out from where it had managed to wedge itself. “Now we can go home,” Mina wiggled her eyebrows at Rue as she ran out of the storeroom and towards the cash register, placing the book in the area set aside for orders. “I’ll meet you at the front. Just have to lock up and get my jacket.” With a few flicks of her wand, her jacket met her hand and the lights in the shop started to extinguish as Mina headed towards the front door. A SIMPLE SOFT CHUCKLE LEFT the Weiss’ lips and the topic was left there. That was one thing Rue loved about Mina, she never really asked despite if she was curious or not. And that was one of the many reasons why Mina was and always will be Rue’s soulmate. They just clicked on all levels except lovers! ”Thank you for the final choice.” She said with a soft hum.
Rue’s brows began to raise at Mina’s response, and the crack of her smile only grew wider. ”An angel? How old was this lady?” The old that hated the young, but had to rely on the young to help her out. Ah, they were Rue’s favourite kinds of people. Those who sought out her product and met with Rue were usually surprised to be met with a young face and Rue was always surprised to meet an older face. Selling potions of the sort was fun sometimes.
At the excitement from Mina’s tone, it was safe to say she found the damn book. Rue nodded, half dazed as Mina mentioned she was done, only needing to lock up and grab her jacket. Rue was more than happy now, waddling her way through the store and out of the front door again, hissing at the chill of the cold air. Tonight was going to be more than perfect now!

▲ Mina had to think about how old the lady was for a few seconds. Based on how she dressed in her formal robes everywhere she went and looked like she had penciled in her eyebrows over her wrinkly powdered face, practically ancient. She absolutely shambled through the store too, which only made the length of time she was there excruciatingly long. There was plenty of time to belittle and whine at Mina as she inched herself towards the counter every time she showed up. The look of disgust too, when she saw the Oliveira girl working. Mina didn’t know why the old bat didn’t just come back another day, because they clearly both disliked each other enough that a problem always arose. She had no problem giving the lady a copy of her schedule on a weekly basis if that would solve all of their problems. “Old enough that I swear I can see dust coming out of her mouth when she talks. She looks like she’s halfway to becoming a mummy. All bones and shriveled.” Just recounting her appearance to Rue made Mina shiver. The lady’s grating voice also had a habit of haunting her drunken nightmares. It was terrible. Rue had already left by the time she made it to the front door. With one last cursory look into the dark bookshop, Mina stepped out into the cold and slammed the door behind her with a healthy lock snapping into place on it. The chill that set in immediately made her realize exactly why Rue had such a sour look on her face when she had finally been let into the shop. Everything from the wind to the blue glow of the moon bit into the exposed parts of her skin and numbed them immediately. She held out a looped arm for Rue to take, because the girl was clearly having a moment with whatever she had taken before showing up. “So what first? Are we going back to my place to chill and ordering food there, or getting stuff on the way? Cal won’t be home until like, super early tomorrow morning, so we’ve got the whole place to do whatever until then.” Meaning anything and everything was on the table. As long as the apartment wasn’t completely trashed when her sister got back and Rue was mostly out of sight and out of mind, they’d probably be okay. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

LAUGHING FROM HER FRIEND'S RESPONSE, Rue's eyes closed in complete and utter bliss. She could picture the woman now, brows furrowed tightly whenever making conversation with Mina. Something Rue understood completely, especially when her friend was a drunken mess. Robes tight against the woman's body, powdered makeup on her face, potentially even a bold, red lippy like most elderly women chose to present their assertiveness. Bullshit to Rue if you asked her. Oh and even the way she talked. Rue pictured it all too vividly, enough to even grimace her own facial expression. "I think I can make a potion that does something like that." Rue raised her arms then, mocking how mummy's walked and talked. "Mummify her if she ever came back to complain."
With the cold air hitting the Weiss' face by the time Mina found the book and told her she'd meet Rue outside, Rue swayed as she waited, hands stuffing into her pockets and digging out her bottled potion, using the droplet to squirt a few more drops upon the brunette's tongue, keeping up her euphoric wave for a few more hours. The slam of the door was enough for the Weiss to jump but grip tightly onto the bottle as they did. That was countless hours spent on the potion and Rue refused to waste it. Taking their friend's arm, Rue rested her head on Mina's shoulders, taking in her warmth and selfishly using it for herself. "Yours works for me. Can take a little nap as you get ready as well." Rue had a lopsided smile then as she glanced at her friend. "Since, you know. You take forever to change."

▲ “I have a feeling she’s taking every potion under the full moon right now, just to stay alive.” Merlin, her voice made Mina shiver every time she heard it. The only comparison was nails on a blackboard, with an extra layer of eighty years of smoking. If there was ever one specific thing that would turn her off of her own bad habit, it was sounding like this old bat in a few decades. At the same time, she also knew there would be tonics to prevent that from happening by the time she was in that condition, so why stop? Drinking less meant she needed to have one consistent vice. Smoking filled that void. A nap. Mina knew she should have seen that coming. There was going to be a point where Rue would have to ‘sleep’ off whatever she had taken. The only reason Mina didn’t consider it an actual rest was because whatever concoctions of Rue’s that she consumed always left her feeling like she barely caught a wink. Weiss products and the sandman didn’t play nice, and Mina wasn’t going to go the extra step and taking a sleeping draught just to counter that. Falling into that hole wasn’t a smart thing to do, and she had seen plenty of witches and wizards lose themselves to the cycle. Mungo’s wouldn’t have nearly as many patients if there weren’t potion addicts who could barely go a day without some sort of tincture of pepper-up or toe-tingling tonic. She certainly wasn’t book smart, but Mina liked to think she had enough knowledge to keep herself away from the wickedness of the potions black market. As for Rue? Maybe not as much. But Mina had known her for long enough to know that their current state wasn’t bordering anything too bad. They had both been in more compromising situations with drugs and alcohol, so this was nothing new or dangerous to either of them. “It only seems like forever because you usually pass out while waiting. Can’t blame me for letting you get your beauty sleep.” At the same time, Rue wasn’t exactly wrong. Mina did have a bad habit of…taking a while. In her defense, that usually included eating, walking the dog, getting ready, and then pre-gaming. That was supposed to take some time. “So then to speed things up, you order food while I walk Titania. Deal? Then you can take your nap.” MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

SNICKERING AT HER FRIEND'S RESPONSE, Rue began to wonder if they could ever do the same. Truthfully, no one wanted to die and Rue was one of those people also, but with her...bad habits and secrets she kept, it was only time before the Weiss could find themselves deep in something and evidently end up like her father. But at Mina's retort, Rue snorted at her, refusing to accept that Mina's claims were mostly true. The potions usually wore Rue out fairly easily, hence why she would top up every few hours to keep the high going, at least...Until Mina robbed the potion bottle off of the Weiss and made her sleep anyway. Rue hated those moments considering they would be similar to the last moment it happened. The Weiss would either be stressed about something or spiralling completely, using the potions as a getaway instead of a reliever. She was an addict after all.
"Pffft." Rue began, blowing raspberries quietly. "Beauty sleep is for the young. I'm as old as a bat you see." Ah yes, the old back problems and fine wrinkles were kicking in, in her early twenties already. At the mention of food, Rue's eyes slightly lit up, she could go for a butterbeer and any kind of snack truthfully. "Fiiiine." She replied, lips tugging up into a smile. "What do you want? I'll meet you back at your place."

▲ It was hard not to laugh at Rue when she mentioned beauty sleep being for younger people. Mina used to think along those same lines, but working morning shifts on just a few hours of sleep and at least a bottle and a half of wine (plus whatever else she had taken the night before) was not the way to function. It had certainly been a slow progression into misery and sleep deprivation, but it had caught up somewhere around the last holiday season and she had since decided that she really liked sleep. Who would have thought that getting the recommended amount, or at least close to it, was actually really good for the body? At the end of the day, it almost always came down to what ended up making her look more responsible, and Callisto was certainly more easy going on her now that she wasn’t stumbling into the apartment at five in the morning absolutely blitzed and covered in liquids of unknown origins. Mina felt bad at times, especially when it happened still every so often, but her sister was lenient these days. Occasions like tonight would probably go unnoticed as long as something terrible didn’t happen or if she managed to be quiet by the time she got home. “I’d tell you to take a sleeping draught, but I’m pretty sure you already do,” Mina commented, though realized it came out a lot more presumptuous than she meant it too. She didn’t necessarily think that Rue had a potion addiction, especially to her own work, but she sort of did. Some of them were excellent replacements for muggle drugs, others even better. “Just don’t run yourself into the ground. Then you’ll be forced to lay around sober all day. Wouldn’t want that, would you?” A horrible warning, but it was the kind that would hopefully work on Rue. It was much more enjoyable doing the fun stuff and partying when it really mattered, as opposed to going hard all the time. Mina had her own vices with alcohol and clubbing, and pushing those to the side when it was time to be an adult and responsible was hard. Once she started doing it though, it seemingly worked itself out. She had faith Rue could do it too. Food was the way to her friend’s heart though, and it seemed to speed everything up. “Totally up to you. Something light, maybe. I’m sure we’ll eat again later.” More like she was positive that they would be. Mina always got hungry after drinking and Merlin knows whatever Rue’s potions would do. “Deal,” she grinned at the agreement to split up and complete their separate tasks. She pulled out one of her spare keys and put it into Rue’s hand. “Cal won’t be there, so if you get back before I do with the dog, just let yourself in. See you in a few.” Pulling away from Rue, Mina started in the direction of her apartment, the cold air making her move just a little faster than she would normally.
At least thirty minutes had passed since separating from Rue and making it home. Dragging the dog out into the cold March air was harder than Mina had anticipated, her cloud of a dog dragging all four paws behind her as much as possible. Mina wasn’t exactly having any of it though, and producing a handful of treats to coax Titania during the walk got the Samoyed to move faster. Somehow she had managed to pull the most stubborn dog in existence from the litter. Either that or Callisto was teaching her bad manners while Mina was out. That honestly made more sense to her. “Come ooon,” Mina groaned as her dog came to a standstill only a block away from the apartment. There wasn’t any reason behind it, other than that she apparently wanted to be a huge asshole today. Mina could understand if there were good smells or there was another dog across the street, but there wasn’t. Tugging back on the leash, Titania sat herself down in the middle of the sidewalk, causing Mina to slouch back towards the dog. Apparently she wanted another treat. This was exactly why they weren’t brought on walks in the first place. The dog was too smart for her own good, and knew her unwillingness to walk would earn her more bribes. The problem though? Mina was fishing through her pockets and came out with nothing. All the treats had already been eaten. She stared down at her dog, who looked up expectantly, assuming she was about to get another biscuit. “I’ll give you dinner when we get back. You want dinner, right?” Mina immediately began with her cooing, as if her dog wasn’t intelligent enough to know she had fucked up and didn’t bring enough treats. “Dinner, Titania, come on,” Mina repeated, pulling on the leash gently and mimicking a jog in the direction of home. The dog stayed planted on the sidewalk, only continuing her stare up at her owner. It wasn’t working. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0
