Jamie hadn’t been expecting to be able to fix this problem. It had obviously been eating at Dom for a while now, and if the answer was just as simple as a few sleeping potions, then it would have been solved by now. Still, she was going to try her best to help Dom, if only by being a good listening ear or shoulder to cry on. All Jamie did when Dom said that she didn’t “do” love potions was nod. This wasn’t something that the Ravenclaw was willing to argue about, it seemed. When the explanation came, about Ethan and how they had started, Jamie nodded slowly, trying to take it all in. To love someone, and then to have them ripped away from you… Jamie’s heart was breaking just thinking about it. But she needed to say something… “It’s funny how we realize how much we care for someone when they’re gone, isn’t it?” Jamie asked, her voice low. She didn’t mean to imply that she knew anything what it was like to have the person she loved die, but she did know what it was like to have to remove someone she cared for from her life completely. In a way, it was almost worse to know that her mother was alive and well, and she still couldn’t go to her. She could, but she couldn’t, and that was infuriating. But Jamie wanted to make sure that Dom knew that Ethan was, in fact, gone. There wasn’t a way to bring him back. “It’s fine that you love him, Dom, and I’m sure that wherever he is, he loves you too. But love can’t raise him from the dead.” Some said that love conquered all, but Jamie knew that just wasn’t true. It could conquer everything, except for death. Jamie hoped that Dominique wouldn’t get mad at her for saying what she said, but the Hufflepuff was also prepared to have to finish the scavenger hunt on her own because the Ravenclaw shouted at her, or stormed away.

Dom knew Jamie meant well, which was probably the reason she was opening up so much about the whole thing. She shook her head, which was still resting in her hands. "I knew how much I cared before he ... d-d-died," she choked out the last word. "I realized how much I cared for him when he was attacked the first time," she added softly. Not everyone was aware that Ethan was attacked prior to his murder, but it was easier to pretend that they knew. "But knowing how much I loved him and how much he loved me isn't taking away the pain," she admitted. Then Jamie commented that it was alright to love him, but that he was gone. Dom looked up at Jamie finally, "I know he's not coming back. I know he's gone. I know it all. I just ... miss him. That's all." Yeah, that was a good way to describe Dom's troubles. When Ethan died, she held her emotions in and mourned for him privately. She had fun over the summer and pretended like she didn't think about him, but now that she was back in school, the smallest things reminded her of him. And there were few things that could distract her from the random memories she had with Ethan as she went throughout the year, which was why things were getting continuously harder for her.

Jamie didn’t know what else she could say, or what she could do. She was at a loss because she hadn’t experienced anything like this before. Everything bad that had happened to her was, in some way, her own fault. Ethan’s death wasn’t something that Dominique could have prevented, and even if she blamed herself for it, she probably knew that she shouldn’t. Jamie hated feeling like she was making this worse for Dom instead of better, and she decided the best thing that she could do was stop trying to empathize, keep quiet, and keep nodding. Jamie put her arm around the other girl in a way that she hoped was comforting, mind still running a mile a minute so that the silence surrounding them wouldn’t last too long or be too awkward. In the end, though, Jamie really didn’t know what to say. Because loving someone that wasn’t going to come back, and missing someone who wasn’t going to return…that was rough. And it wasn’t something that she knew how to talk about it. Hurting others that she loved? Jamie could talk about that for days. But being the one that was hurt? Foreign. Once again Jamie hoped that Dominique wasn’t going to misconstrue her silence for something else… Because she didn’t want to make this any worse than it already was.

Jamie didn't say anything, which was a relief for Dom. Not that she minded the other girl's opinion, but explaining herself and her thoughts was exhausting. She'd probably continue talking about it though. Apparently she couldn't seem to stop, now that she started. Jamie wrapped an arm around Dom and she leaned into the Hufflepuff, closing her eyes and just trying to take deep breaths. She just let her mind wander then. Let it go back to Ethan a little, let it go back to those glorious weeks when they were dating and the years before that of them being best friends. She knew she had to let him go and had to move on with her life. She just didn't know how to do that, especially here where she saw him almost everywhere she looked. She didn't know how long they sat there in silence, but eventually she sat up. "Thank you Jamie. I appreciate you letting me talk and just relax a little bit. And thanks for distracting me by hiding my books." She gave a small laugh, not knowing what else to say. Dom wasn't really used to letting her guard down in front of other people.

There was something wonderful about being able to sit with someone in absolute, perfect silence. Jamie listened to the sound of Dom’s breathing, and moved her arms in slow, comforting circles on the other girl’s arm to try to help her calm. The time seemed to crawl by, but Jamie didn’t mind it at all. It was peaceful in a way Jamie hadn’t been peaceful in a long while, even though she regretted the circumstances surrounding it. After a while of that same peaceful silence, Dom thanked Jamie, and the Hufflepuff nodded. “Any time, Dom.” She said gently. “If you just want to go back to your room and rest, I can get the rest of them for you and deliver them to you later?” Somehow, Jamie couldn’t see Dom wanting to wander around the castle any more that day. It was better if she could have some time to collect herself and be alone and recover from the sort of emotional breakdown she had had.

Jamie was being so kind and Dom could hardly believe how much understanding she was sharing. The hufflepuff told her to just go back to her room and rest and that the rest of her books would be returned later. Dom nodded and smiled, "Thanks Jamie. I did have fun searching for my books with you. I'm sorry I lost it all, but I really do appreciate you listening to me about all my problems. It was nice to talk about it with someone who wasn't so close to everything." If that made any sense. By now, Dom wasn't quite sure if she was making sense, but that wasn't her goal. She just didn't want to melt down in front of the entire school. "I'll see you later," she said as she started walking back to her dormitory, where she went straight to her bed and crawled under the covers, not coming out again for the rest of the day. the end @jamie
